What you did no know about Islam! The word Islam – you see and hear it every day but you don’t know and you don’t understand what it’s all about. You see Muslims all over the place yet most people don’t even know what Islam is. You find it so ironic that Islam is so prevalent yet so unknown to most people. It’s so unreal and so ridiculous to find something so widespread yet so unfamiliar to almost everybody. This unusual circumstance surrounding Islam arouses your interest of wanting to know more about this seemingly “strange” religion. One thing which surprises people who are examining this “strange” religion very closely is that Islam does not appear to them to be what they expected. What they assume is that they have a religion so strange that one could hardly believe in its principles, and they expect that it should look something like that – a strange religion of some mystical beliefs and mystifying practices. And then they find out that it does not resemble what they expected at all. What they find is that Islam is so logical that it can withstand scientific approach of proving the truthfulness of its beliefs. A truly scientific approach to Islam is possible because it offers something that is not offered by other religions. It is what Scientists demand. What it offers is one of the well known scientific principles, it is the principle of finding mistakes or looking for mistakes in a theory until it’s proven to be right. Scientists called it as “Falsification Test.” Today there are many people who claim that theirs is the True Religion. These religions are all over the place, but how do we know which one is True and which one is False? To answer this question objectively, it makes a lot of sense that we use what scientists and logical thinkers have been using to “test” the validity of one’s theory. To test the validity of a theory, the whole scientific community has demanded a test of falsification. They say, “If you have a theory, do not bother us with it unless you bring with that theory a way for us to prove whether you are wrong or not.” Well, this is what exactly Islam has. In essence, it states, “This is the True Religion, and here are the ways to prove whether it is False.” Now where can you find a religion that does something like that? Basically, it is telling you, “If this religion is not what it claims to be, then all you have to do is try this or do that to prove that it is false.” So let us leave all other arguments at first and ask these questions amongst ourselves, “Is there any falsification test in your religion? Is there anything in your religion that would prove you are wrong if I could prove to you that something exists – anything?” A closer look at all the other religions around the world will not have anything – no test, no proof, nothing. That is because they do not carry around the idea that they should not only present what they believe but should also offer others a chance to prove they’re wrong. However, Islam does that. It claims to be the True Religion yet it offers a countercheck – giving you a chance to verify that claim. And you who objectively seek the truth would study and research the validity of that claim. You don’t accept something that doesn’t make any sense. You don’t accept a belief that is based on “mysteries”. The claim of being the True Religion had to be logically sound, there has to be a rational behind it, something that is based on analyzing the patterns of intellectual reasoning by which a conclusion is properly drawn from a set of self-evident proofs thereby proving without a shadow of a doubt its undeniable truth. In order to understand Islam objectively and intellectually, we need to establish a basis for our discussion which takes into account certain characteristics a True Religion must have which must be accepted at the onset. Otherwise, there can be no common ground between the one who seeking the Truth and the one claiming to be on the True Religion. These characteristics are: 1. It must exist since the beginning of time. This is necessary because if it doesn’t, then we cannot claim a religion to be true if there are people who had lived and died before its existence simply because salvation would be impossible for them. 2. The object of worship must be the Creator, and not His creation. This is obvious. But false religions don’t do this, they worship God’s creation instead of God, the Creator. 3. It must be universally available at any given point in time. The True Religion must be accessible for everyone, it must not depend on to a particular person, restricted in a certain place, or limited at any given point in time. Within the framework which these characteristics are established, we can examine objectively the validity of Islam’s claim. And then we will take a look at the ways for you to invalidate that claim, to prove that it is wrong – if you can prove it. No other religion offers something like this. Other religions claim that they are right but doesn’t offer a way for you to prove they could be wrong if you can prove something that will invalidate their claim. In other words, they don’t offer a way for you to verify or to countercheck whether their claim is true or not. Only Islam does that. It is as if it is saying, “This is the right way, and if you want to try to prove it wrong, do this or try that.” The starting point of understanding Islam is to know the meaning of the word Islam itself. The word Islam is derived from three Arabic root letters SLM, which literally means to surrender, to submit, to yield, or to give one’s self up. In Arabic morphology, or the study of linguistic patterns of word formation, there are a lot of words that can be formed out from the root letters SLM. One such word is “aSLaMa”, which means a person who had submitted, or he resigned himself into something. To denote someone performing an action, the prefix “mu” is added, when combine with these root letters, it will turn out the word “muSLiM”, a person who is doing the act of submission, or an individual who gives himself up. Similarly, from these same root letters, a verbal noun can be derived from it, and the word “iSLaM” is formed out. Notice how the three root letters SLM can come out in different words depending on what and how you want to use it in Arabic. So from the three root letters SLM, which carries the meanings of submission, and to submit, the words iSLaM, aSLaMa, and muSLiM are deduced. iSLaM is the name of an action word indicating submission to the will of God, or an act of resignation to God. aSLaMa, the past tense of the verb, is the term used for a person who had accepted Islam, or somebody who had surrendered himself to the will of God. And muSLiM is the active participle of the verb, somebody who is the doer of that action. He is someone who submits to the will of God. Islam teaches that one must submit to the will of God and live according to the teachings of the prophets. A Muslim therefore believes in all the prophets starting with Adam and together with Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, David, Solomon, Jonah, Jesus, and so on. He also believes that God had sent His prophets to all corners of the earth to preach only one religion and to guide man to the right path. But mankind not only strayed away from the right path again and again, they also lost or distorted the code of guidance that the prophets had brought. That is why prophets were sent to re-state the original message and guide man back to the right path. The message of God was brought to this world by a succession of prophets in different times of history until God sent down the last revelation to the last prophet. This last revelation is known as the Qur’an. It is a complete record of the exact words revealed by God to the last prophet. This revelation was memorized, recorded and passed on as is. The last prophet received the exact wording and passed it on to his followers. The Qur’an has been perfectly preserved since its revelation both orally and in writing. Even today, there are hundreds of thousands of Muslims from around the world who can recite the entire text of the Qur’an from memory, just as it was memorized in the time of the last prophet. Original copies of the manuscript still exist today and not one word of it has been changed over the centuries. It remains preserved and unchanged since the time of revelation in its original Arabic text over fourteen centuries ago. It is God and only God speaking in the Qur’an. There are no comments, passages or quotes from humans whatsoever in the Qur’an. This last prophet is Muhammad, whose teachings are so simple and logical that over fourteen centuries had passed, people from all walks of life, from every nation on earth, and from every human race accepted Islam. His message is very clear and easy to understand – He called people to worship One God, as well as living by example of God’s message. Because of the absolutely unique position he occupied as the recipient of revelations from God, every act and detail of his life was of the greatest interest to those around him. As a result, the prophet’s companions have written down his speech, actions, unspoken approvals, and his way of life. Consequently, the Muslim’s beliefs are based on two sources, the Qur’an, the last divine revelation sent to Muhammad, the last prophet, and the Sunnah, a collection of recorded words and actions of Prophet Muhammad, it helps explain and clarify the Qur’an and to present practical applications to its message. It is these two sources of guidance, which is now known as Islam: as revealed in the Qur’an and as exemplified by the last prophet. The prophet’s life-example became a guide for Muslims in the understanding of the Qur’an and the practice of their religion. For Muslims throughout the centuries, the message of the Qur’an and the life-example of Prophet Muhammad have constituted the formative and enduring foundation of faith and good deeds. They have served as the basic sources of principles and norms on which daily life is to be patterned. So Islam is a complete way of life, providing guidelines in every aspect of a Muslim’s life. Muslims have a book of guidance, and a prophet who lived a life of guidance that was sent forth in the book. Prophet Muhammad’s life was the best example of the noble lessons and principles set forth in the Qur’an. Because of this, the last prophet’s teachings and practices have become a material source of Muslim creed alongside the Qur’an. The Qur’an – the last divine revelation – exists in its original text, without a word or even a letter having been changed. And the Sunnah – the last prophet’s words and actions – is preserved with authenticity and accuracy. The accounts preserved in the books of Sunnah are a collection of authentic narrative stories about the prophet’s life. Muslims have carefully and in detail scrutinized the reliability of the transmitters of these narrations, and only those whose narrators are found to be completely reliable and sound are accepted. So not only do Muslims have the complete text of God’s message that was revealed to Muhammad, the Qur’an, but they have also preserved the entire record of his teachings and practices in what is called as the Sunnah. The Sunnah demonstrates how the Qur’an is to be implemented. The Qur’an is the manual, and the Sunnah is the practical demonstration of that manual. Prophet Muhammad conveyed not only the message of the Qur’an, but he also lived by example of its practical application. Thus, the Qur’an and the life-example of the last prophet together became the way of life that we know today as Islam. Prophet Muhammad is not the founder of Islam, as many people mistakenly think. Islam did not begin with the prophethood of Muhammad nor was it founded by him. Islam goes back at the time of Adam, the father of mankind. It was not Muhammad but Adam who first brought Islam to humanity. Then, each prophet and messenger came to teach their own people to a clear understanding of God’s commandments. They put forward teachings relevant on their time but the essence and core concept of their message were the same, and that is the worship of One God purely and submission to His will. Prophet Muhammad himself makes it abundantly clear that Islam, the complete submission of man before God, is the one and only faith consistently revealed by God to mankind from the very beginning. Noah, Abraham, Job, Jonah, David, Solomon, Jacob, Moses and Jesus – prophets from the past who appeared at different periods of time all brought the same message. They were each repeating the message of their predecessor. Thus, Islam has had existed in one form or another through a series of divine guidance that God had revealed to different prophets, on separate times, and in various places. Prophets were sent to all nations of the earth to guide people to the straight path of worshiping One God. But, with the passage of time, people went astray and the teachings of the prophets were either changed or lost. That’s why prophets were sent again and again to all corners of the earth until the last prophet came. For this reason, Islam is not a new religion with a new scripture brought by Prophet Muhammad, but rather to be a re-expression in its complete and final form of the True Religion of God, as it was originally revealed to Adam and succeeding prophets. The Qur’an only represents the original message that was brought by prophets of the past. The Qur’an teaches that the message of God was brought to this world by a succession of prophets since the time of Adam. The essence of Islam, which is the worship of One God and sincere submission to His will, was revealed to Adam who passed it on to his descendants. All following revelations to Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and finally Muhammad were in conformity with that message differing only according to the needs of the people to which they were sent. These prophets taught their people the same concept of religion of what is known today as Islam. The most important teaching of Prophet Muhammad is Tawheed, or the Oneness of God. In Arabic, the term Tawheed comes from the word waahid, literally means One, and it implies to make wahada, which means to make something one, or to assert the oneness of something. The word waahid is the opposite of plurality. So waahid is something that will continue to be singular and never become a partner of something else. However, in a religious context, the word Tawheed means to single out God with all forms of worship, so that you make all your worship for God alone. That is, to make wahada to worship, to assert the Oneness of God in all forms of worship, or to direct all forms of worship to someone who is waahid – the One (God). Tawheed, or the Oneness of God lies at the very heart of Islam. It strongly emphasize that there is only One True God and that He alone deserves to be worshiped. It asserts God’s oneness in its simplest, uncomplicated, most literal sense. That there is “One God” in the most basic, simple, and elementary meaning of the word. He has no son, no parents nor any similarity or equal. His nature as a Supreme Being does not resemble in anything, and such qualities as The Cherisher, Sustainer and Provider of the whole creation, Most Gracious and Most Merciful, All-Forgiving, Most Loving and Most Kind, All-Knowing, All-Hearing and All-Seeing, Almighty and Most Wise, All-Capable and Powerful over all things, the One who is Free from all wants and Worthy of all Praise, the One Full of Honour, Majesty and Glory, Most Generous and Owner of Great Bounty, the Creator of all, the Giver of everything and all that, only belongs to Him and there’s absolutely no one like Him. Islam teaches that God has a unique nature and that He is free from gender, human weaknesses, and beyond anything which human beings can imagine. There is nothing like Him in this world because the Creator must be distinct and different from the things that He creates. He is above all defects and above any similarity to anything in creation. And this Unique and Great God, who has the exclusive right to be worshiped by man, revealed His glorious name in the Qur’an as “Allah”, and describe Himself as the One and Only True God whom worship is due: {“ Verily, I am Allah! There is no God but I, so worship Me alone”} (Qur’an 20:14). In Arabic, the word ilah means “one who is worshiped”. That is, a being which on account of its greatness and power is considered worthy to be worshiped. Anything or any being who possess powers that are so great that it controls the whole of creation is also called ilah. The concept of ilah also includes the sense that the whole creation is dependent on Him and He is not dependent on anyone else. He does not need anything. He does not need His creation. But the whole creation turns to Him for all that they need. Other languages also contain words with similar meaning, and the word God in English have a similar connotation of the Arabic word ilah. In the Arabic Grammar, if you want to make a common noun to proper noun, you add the definite article “al” to it. The prefix “al” is equivalent to the word “The” in English. So to make the word ilah into proper noun, the definite article al is added to it. That is, “al” added to “ilah” would be “allah”. Thus, the proper noun of ilah is the word Allah, literally means “The God” – combination of the definite article al (the Arabic word for The), and the common noun ilah (the Arabic word for God). But a more accurate translation of the word Allah into English would be “The One and Only God”, or “The One True God”. The name “Allah” is something that God Himself who informed us through divine revelation that this is His name. Muslims refer to God as Allah only because this name is what the Creator calls Himself in the Qur’an. It came from divine revelation and it is the name that God use to refer to Himself. When Prophet Muhammad started to talk about Islam to his people, they asked him who Allah is. The answer didn’t come from the prophet. Allah revealed one chapter in the Qur’an in response to their question: {“Say (tell them Oh Prophet Muhammad): He is Allah, the One and Unique (God). Allah, the Everlasting Self-Sufficient (whom all creatures need). He has not given birth and was not born. And no one is comparable to Him.”} (Qur’an 112: 1-4). This is Allah answering to the question of who He is. And there is no better answer. To Muslims, this four-verse definition of God serves as the yardstick of the study of divinity. Any man-made concept of God must be subjected to this acid test. False and erroneous concepts about God can easily be dismissed using these verses. These verses tell us that God is literally One, not Three-in-One. God has no needs and is self-sufficient, but the whole creation is dependent on Him for all that they need. God was not born, nor does He give birth. Thus, He does not have a son and share His divinity to others. And there is no creation that is like Him. He is the Creator and His being is distinct and separate from His creation. Therefore, He did not become a part of creation by becoming a man. Islam makes it very clear that the belief in Allah does not only mean to simply believe that He is the One True God, but it does mean also, and this is the most important point that needs to be given more emphasis, that all kinds of worship should exclusively be devoted to Allah alone and that every care is taken to ensure that this is observed at all times. In other words, it means much more than simply believing that there is “One God”, but it further emphasizes that worship should only be directed to that “One God” exclusively. This is the core of the matter in Islam: the concept of Tawheed. It puts great emphasis that Allah is waahid, the One without partner in His Divinity and Worship. No other entity can in any way have the attributes of the Creator. He is far beyond our imagination and bears no resemblance to any of His creation. And more importantly, to single out the Creator alone for worship, and not to worship anything along with Him. Anything that contradicts the above concept of Tawheed is referred to as Shirk, literally means sharing. It refers to the worship of others instead of Allah or along with Him. It is an act of sharing or assigning partners to Allah in whatever form it may take. In Islam, the main objective is to ensure the Oneness of God. It is not enough that people believe that “God is One”, but they must follow up this belief by worshiping that One God alone. This simple concept of Tawheed has to be explained in detail because for some people, even though they believe in “One God”, do not direct all of their worship and prayers to Him alone. They call on numerous saints for every specific need, in statues made of stone, etc. Their argument is that they are not actually worshiping the stone image or the statue, but God who is present within it. They claim that the stone idols and carved images are only the focal point for God’s essence and is not in itself God. They try devising a “rational excuse” for their actions. But obviously, this is faulty reasoning. This is not from God – this is idolatry. This is the worst sin that a man can commit. The belief in Tawheed means to deny all forms of association of partners with Allah. It rejects the use of all intermediaries between God and man, and stresses that people approach God directly and reserve all worship for Him alone. If someone faces an idol or to a stone image and prays, he has associated a partner with Allah, because worship is being shared between Allah and His creation. Likewise if someone prays to a prophet, to so-called saints asking for help from Allah thru them, has also committed shirk. Shirk can take many forms: facing to idols or statues while praying, calling upon saints for help, believing that God became man, etc. All forms of shirk must be avoided, no matter what shape, form, or name. Shirk simply means an act of worship for other than Allah, or along with Allah. In other words, it is an act of calling, supplicating, and praying to created beings instead of the Creator. The greatest sin in Islam is to engage in practices which contradict or compromise Tawheed. This direct and indirect sharing of partners with Allah is referred to as Shirk. Allah created humans to worship Him, that’s why Shirk represents the greatest act of rebellion against God because it contradicts the very purpose of our creation, and is thus the ultimate sin. It is a sin so great that it virtually cancels out all good a person may do and guarantees its perpetrator eternal in Hell-Fire if he does not give it up before his death: {“If you were to join other gods with Allah, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will surely be among the losers (in the hereafter)”} (Qur’an 39:65). The idolater will never be granted forgiveness if he has not renounced idolatry before his death: {“Verily, Allah does not forgive that partners should be setup with Him (in worship), but He forgives (sins) other than that to whom He wills”} (Qur’an 4:48). Of course, if a person does give up this sin of idolatry before his death, then he is safe from such eternal punishment in Hell-Fire. Setting up partners along with Allah is a deadly sin that He will never forgive despite the fact that He forgives all other sins. Man-made religions in one way or the other invite their followers to the worship of creation. People are called upon to pray to a man, a prophet named Jesus, whom they have claimed to have been the “son of God”. They also pray to Mary as the “mother of God”. They made a god out of Jesus and directed their prayer to him and his mother. But clearly, both Jesus and Mary are human beings like us and no matter how honorable and righteous, they are still God’s creation, and are therefore not to be worshiped. In Islam, there is no confusion in divinity. Anything that is created is not deserving of worship, and only the Creator is worthy of being worshiped. Interestingly, there is a verse in the Qur’an that gives us a glimpse of a major future event. Allah quotes His conversation with Jesus that will take place on the Day of Judgment: {“And when Allah will say (on the Day of Judgment): Oh Jesus son of Mary! Did you say unto men, “Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah?” He (Jesus) will say: Glory be to you! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it... Never did I say to them anything but what you commanded me to say, Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord...”} (Qur’an 5:116-117). Prophet Jesus called his people to worship Allah without partners. He never claimed divinity for himself, nor did he ever ask to be worshiped. Jesus never claimed to be God, or asked his people to worship him. In fact, Jesus told his followers to pray to God as he himself did. And our logic would tell us that someone who prays to God cannot possibly be God himself. The two has to be separate entities – one is the worshiper and the other is the object of worship. Since the greatest sin in God’s sight is the worship of others besides Him or along with Him, and everything besides Him is creation, the principles of Islam then are all either directly or indirectly opposed to the worship of creation. The fundamental tenets of Islam make a very clear distinction between the Creator and what He has created. The Creator and the created are separate and distinct. The Creator is invisible in this life. No one can see Him in this earthly life. Thus, He is not manifested or incarnated in any other life forms. So for that reason, no man is “God-incarnate”, or any similar false notion that God came down to earth in human form. Therefore, the commandments in Islam concerning worship clearly indicate that Allah is not to be found in created beings, He is totally separate from them, and thus any worship in His creation or thru His creation is the greatest of sins: {“Joining others in worship with Allah is indeed the greatest sin”} (Qur’an 31:13). The concept of Oneness of God is the single most important matter which the prophets were sent. This is the most fundamental principle in Islam. It is this concept of Tawheed which is the core of the matter of Prophet Muhammad’s message. It calls humanity away from the worship of any part of creation to the worship of The One and Only True God, The Creator. It entails the worship of Allah alone, without any partner, and the rejection of worshiping anything besides Him. Some religions claim that God cannot forgive man directly therefore He sends His so-called “only begotten son” to save mankind from their sins. Others interpret this concept that God came down to earth and became a human being to save mankind’s sins. By claiming that God cannot forgive humans directly, people turn to false gods for help. These false gods come in different forms, and anyone who is in his right mind can tell that these so-called gods are indeed false because these are created beings like him. Islam puts great emphasis that God did not become a man nor did He sent a so-called “only begotten son” to save the sins of the world because He can forgive man directly anyway. There is no need to shed blood to an innocent person just to save mankind from its sins because God is perfectly capable of bestowing His infinite Mercy and Forgiveness to whomever He chooses. Islam teaches that God should be approached directly without any intermediaries. That is because the Most Merciful, All-Knowing God is completely in control of everything that exists, and that He can bestow His forgiveness and mercy on His creatures as He pleases. Islam commands man to pray to God directly seeking mercy and forgiveness only to Him. It also forbids man to worship something created because the One True God has to be the Creator and not a part of creation that He creates. Even though other religions have claimed to believe in One God, over time, some man-made ideas entered into their beliefs and practices leading them away from the pure teachings of the prophets. They carved different images and statues and worshiped them, despite the fact that they know that they are the ones who made these things. They worship something that they made by their own hands that cannot hear or answer them. Some even believed that their prophet were the manifestations of God, or “son of God”. All of these misconceptions lead to the worship of created beings instead of the Creator. But divine revelation makes it very clear that: {“Allah has not taken to Himself any son, nor is there any god with Him.”} (Qur’an 23:91). Is there anything clearer than this? This is Allah Himself saying that He has no son and there is no other “God” besides Him. False religions claim that God became man, had a son who shares His divinity, or that God may be worshiped in the form of His creation thru carved-images of different idols. But as has been revealed in the Qur’an, God was not born nor does He give birth, and His being is distinct and separate from His creation. Therefore, He did not become a part of creation by becoming a man nor did He have a son because God does not share His divinity to anyone. By neglecting the true teachings of the prophets and mixing them with man-made ideas, other religions have distorted and nullified the pure belief of “One God” even though they claim that they believe in such. Tawheed is not just simply believing that God is One, but it further emphasize to worship that One God alone. Some people argue that they pray to and worship others besides God only to get closer to Him. They often approach God through an intermediary, such as saints to whom they direct their prayers in the belief that these saints can directly influence the affairs of this world, they took their priests as intercessors between themselves and God, in the mistaken belief that the priests are closer to God due to their celibacy and piety, and thus more likely to be listened to by God. They also took Jesus as the “son of God” and make him as an intermediary with the false belief that they will be closer to God by having His son to intercede for them, they also sought “mercy” from Mary and took her as the “mother of God”. In Islam, there is no such thing as an intercessor or intermediary in all forms of worship. You don’t need to seek help on anyone such as patron saints, or to call upon to so-called “son of God”, or to seek mercy to the supposed “mother of God”, or to go to a priest to confess your sins and ask for forgiveness, or to face an idol made of wood and stones when you pray, and the like. It is only in Islam that a person is required to pray only to God, direct and without any intermediary. There is no need to call on anyone whether it is a saint, an idol made of wood and stones, or someone who is believed to be the “son of God”, because clearly all these are created beings like us. In Islam, there is a clear distinction between the Creator and the created. The Creator of everything must be different from and greater than the things that He creates. There is no confusion as to who is to be worshiped. Anything that is created is not to be worshiped, and only the Creator is the object of worship. It is made clear that there is nothing divine or worthy of being worshiped except the One True God, the Creator. Or to put it in one simple statement, “Worship the Creator, not His Creations”. We can easily determine if a religion is false by looking at the object of their worship. If they worship anything or anyone besides the Creator, then it must be false. It just makes sense to us that the only one who deserves to be worshiped is the One who created us, and not His creations. By using the principle of identifying the object of worship, we can easily detect false religions and the man-made nature of their origin. False religions teach the greatest evil – the worship of creation. Typical example is Prophet Jesus, he invited his followers to worship God, but those who claim to be his followers today call people to worship Jesus, claiming that he was God, which is the very contradiction to what Jesus said. Jesus did not claim to be God, nor did he told his followers that he be an object of worship. Yet today most people who claim to be his followers have taken him to be either “God” or “son of God”, and Mary as the “mother of God” and pray to images and idols made in their perception of Jesus and Mary’s likeness. But if we’re going to examine these carefully, we would find that they contradict their own statements. If they refer Jesus as the “son of God”, and Mary as the “mother of God”, then technically, that makes Jesus the son of Mary’s child, and Mary therefore would be the “Grandmother” of Jesus, which we all know it’s not true! And if they refer Jesus as “God” in the statement “mother of God”, then that would invalidate the “son of God” theory because Jesus cannot be the son of his own self! And if Jesus is both the “son of God” and also the son of Mary, then that would make “God” and Mary as husband and wife! This is the reality of the belief of “son of God”, “mother of God”, and the whole concept of “Trinity” exposed rationally, using logical analysis. Jesus is the son of his own self and is also the husband of his own mother, now do you honestly believe that? You really should not unless you bring some proof because it is such a ridiculous theory. They can’t justify and give rational explanation to these arguments, and in the end they will just say it’s a “mystery”. And you as an individual who uses his or her intellect to validate the truth, don’t accept something that does not make any sense, you don’t accept a belief that is based on “mysteries”. You cannot afford to risk your salvation on a “mysterious” concept of belief. A religion, for it to be true, is not just a matter of faith but should be subjected to logical reasoning, otherwise it would be blind following of some inherited belief which can never stand rational scrutiny from someone who seeks intellectual arguments to prove the truthfulness of one’s faith. The fact is that Allah, whom Muslims believe as One, is absolutely One in the purest sense of the word. It means that He is singularly One in natural essence of His existence, free from any different or variant factors having anything to do with His pure or Absolute unity to justify His being the Absolute One, owing an indivisible existence to Himself. “Trinity” suggests that the One is not an Absolute One but a compound of some variants, which can never really be One in the true meaning of Oneness. And certainly, the one dependent in its existence upon its different components can never be independent in its action, whereas Allah is the Absolute One, independently Omnipotent in His will and His action. So with this clear concept of the Oneness of God, there really is no place for “son of God”, “mother of God” and “Trinity” in Islam because Allah has no partners with Him being God, and He does not share His perfect attributes to anyone. Understanding that Allah is the only Supreme Being means denying the existence of any other god. The concept of Tawheed is straightforward, clear and easy to understand. It is free from irrational, mysterious and confusing ideas. That there is only One God – not in a Trinity of gods – is something that even a small child can understand without difficulty. The belief in One Creator is not all there is to a proper belief in God. This belief is definitely necessary but not sufficient. This belief must be followed up with the rejection of worshiping others instead of God, or along with Him. Then, and only then that a person will be fulfilling what it truly means to believe in One God. The most important message that God revealed to mankind is that there is nothing divine and worthy of being worshiped except Him. This is the very essence of the divine message brought by all the prophets, and it is what Islam really is all about – to worship One God alone. Islam’s concept of Oneness of God that is Tawheed is very simple and clear, and leaves no room for any type of misconceptions which often lead to the worship of creation that is Shirk. So a person who truly believes in the Oneness of God has to worship Him alone and refrain from associating any partner with Him of any kind. Islam strongly emphasizes the worship of Allah alone without ascribing to Him any partner. Therefore, simply believing in “One God” is not enough to become a Muslim because other religions also have this belief. This belief in “One God” needs to be clarified that in addition to that belief, we should only worship that “One God” alone and no one else. For a Muslim, the belief in “One God” is in its purest form. He abstains from worshiping anything or anyone besides the “One God”. In Islam, the worst sin is to worship anything or anyone other than God, even if the worshiper intends to draw nearer to God by offering devotions to another being. So even though other religions also claim to believe in One God, they fall short and violate this belief by worshiping others alongside Him, which is, as all of the prophets taught, the greatest sin. Prophet Muhammad was instructed by Allah to tell people what is really forbidden to them: {“Say (tell them Oh Prophet Muhammad): Come, I will recite to you what Allah has really forbidden to you: Do not setup anything (in worship) with Him”} (Qur’an 6:151). The act of setting up partners in worship with Allah is the most sinful act that Prophet Muhammad has informed us, and the core of his message is to worship Allah without partners. Prophet Jesus also told the same thing to his people: {“But the Messiah (Jesus) said: Oh children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. Verily, whosoever sets up partners (in worship) with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise to him, and the Fire will be his abode”} (Qur’an 5:72). And so did Prophet Noah: {“And indeed We sent Noah to his people, and he said: Oh my people! Worship Allah! You have no other ilah (God) but Him.”} (Qur’an 23:23). Islam’s Greatest Commandment is to worship Allah alone, and its Most Forbidden is worshiping others besides Him or along with Him. Tawheed is a logical, simple belief, free from mysterious and complicated concepts. It’s what God has sent down to mankind in all ages through His prophets. It was this belief that, in the beginning of time, Adam had when he was sent down to earth. It was the same commandment that was revealed to Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus. It was the message which Muhammad brought to mankind. It is the belief without the least shade of irrational concepts. Man became guilty of Shirk only because he turned away from the teachings of the prophets and depended on his own faulty reasoning, wrong perceptions and erroneous interpretations. Prophets are there to explain God’s message to man. If man turns away from a prophet, he is bound to fall into error. God has chosen Messengers of great character to bring His universal message to all of us. The tasks of these Messengers were both to bring the message and to guide by personal example. They would always practice what they preached. That is why in God’s last divine revelation, the Qur’an, we have a perfect example on how to live its message by following the Sunnah of the last prophet. Since the time of Adam, the universal content of the message remained unchanged: that there is only One God, no one deserves to be worshiped but Him alone, and that He would judge everybody’s deeds on the Day of Resurrection. This principle has not change through the passage of time. It is the same as the number one commandment in the Ten Commandments of Prophet Moses, the same pure faith that Prophet Abraham taught to his descendants, the same message that Prophet Jesus conveyed to his people, the same warning that Prophet Noah called his people so that they may be save from the big flood of water, and was also the same creed that Prophet Muhammad brought. All prophets gave the same universal message, they all taught that God is One, free from sharing His divinity with anyone, and that we are all accountable of our actions in this life on the Day of Judgment. That same universal message that all the prophets have brought is what we call today as Islam. Prophet Muhammad did not bring something new. Islam is not a new religion. It is, in essence, the same eternal message revealed through the ages to all of God’s prophets and messengers. Prophet Muhammad only brought the same message as that was revealed by the messengers that came before him: {“And We never sent any messenger before you (Prophet Muhammad), except that We revealed to him that there is no god but Me. Therefore worship Me (alone)”} (Qur’an 21:25). Prophets were sent to every nation who had strayed away from the right path of Tawheed, to guide them back to it. This principle of Tawheed was the same throughout time: to reject all objects of worship, and to direct all worship without exception to God alone. This is the essence of the True Religion and it has been so since the time of Adam. Prophets were sent to particular nations for a certain period of time. But this is not the case of Prophet Muhammad. Since he is the last prophet, his message is for all humanity and will last until the end of time. The teachings of the Qur’an comprise a universal scripture addressed to all of mankind and not to any particular people, or for a specific time period. The message that it brings is nothing new but the same message of all prophets: to worship the One God purely, and submit to God’s will as taught by the prophets. Prophets were raised up among their respective people to call them to the worship of Allah alone and to abandon the worship of the various false gods that their people had invented. Thus, it is man’s duty to follow the way of the prophets. And it really does not matter in what place and period of time a person is born because this pure, simple practice of faith has been in existence since Adam’s time. All the different nations in the world have their own messenger and had brought one and the same message: {“And verily, We have sent among every nation a messenger (proclaiming): Worship Allah (alone) and avoid false gods”} (Qur’an 16:36). The True Religion of God cannot be confined to one person, place, or period of time. If we were to claim that a certain religion is true, then it has to be accessible at any period of time, everywhere. Because if it doesn’t, then how can a person attain salvation and follow a religion claimed to be true if he was born and died before that religion came to exist? The test of its universality then is the hallmark of a True Religion, because for it to be true, a religion has to be accessible to mankind at any given point in time. Before the time of Prophet Muhammad, one could say that they were many Islam. That is, each nation had their prophet, followed their teachings and was on the right path of Islam. By its universality, Islam has always been accessible to mankind at all times by following the way of the prophets and by having that pure faith of rejecting the worship of creation and worshiping One God alone. In every age of human history, and in every nation on earth, all people who have believed and followed their prophets had lived this simple practice of faith. They were all Muslims, regardless of whether they call Islam with a different name in their language. People who followed their prophet from different parts of the world in separate periods of time have a variety of ways to express the term man’s submission to the will of God. People from different places have their own distinct languages, and prophets that were sent to them brought Islam in the language that they understand, and so it is only natural that they call Islam with a different name in their own distinct language. Whatever its name was, it signified submission to God’s will and therefore it is Islam and nothing but Islam. Islam’s accessibility to all mankind at all times convincingly support Islam’s claim that from the beginning of time, in whichever place it was taught, and whatever language it was expressed, Islam alone is, and always has been, the universal message preached by all the prophets of God. Allah had sent us prophets who all taught the same religion: {“He (Allah) has ordained for you the same religion (Islam) which He ordained for Noah, and that which We revealed to you (Muhammad), and that which We ordained for Abraham, Moses, and Jesus”} (Qur’an 42:13). After the creation of the first man, Adam, only one message has been repeatedly delivered to mankind throughout the history of humanity. Thus, to remind people about it and bring them back on track, prophets and messengers including Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and finally Muhammad were sent to convey only one message, the message of submitting oneself to the will of God, which is translated in Arabic as Islam. The pure essence of the beliefs and teachings that were revealed by God to Prophet Muhammad are the same as God taught to all the other prophets of the past. Prophets had been raised among every people, and they all conveyed essentially that same religion which Prophet Muhammad brought. The only thing that distinguishes Prophet Muhammad from all other prophets is that the prophets of the past came with the Divine Message of Islam in its different forms that suits to a particular people in a certain place and for a specific periods of time, whereas the last prophet brought the Divine Message of Islam in its last form for the whole of humanity and for all time to come. Even though the Divine Message that Allah revealed to each prophet differed in form to suit the needs of the community to which he was sent, but the indentifying nature of the message that was decreed is the same: {“And your Lord has decreed that you worship no one but Him”} (Qur’an 17:23). Going back to the premise of characteristics that a True Religion must have, we find that Islam has all these qualities: 1. It exists from the beginning of time. Islam is the continuation of the clear and profound message revealed by God to all prophets. It is not something new brought by Prophet Muhammad, for he only brought the same message that was also brought by prophets that came before him. And a person can be a Muslim and follow Islam even before Prophet Muhammad’s time because Islam was already been in existence since the time of Adam. Islam has had existed since Adam’s time. 2. The object of worship is the Creator, and not His creation. The message of Islam, as brought by the prophets of God, is to worship only the Creator and to avoid the worship of creation either directly or indirectly. It is a clear call to worship the Creator and the rejection of creation-worship of any form. The objective of Islam is to call people away from the worship of creation and to direct them towards the worship of the Creator alone. The basic and most fundamental teaching of Islam invites man to worship only its Creator and to avoid the worship of creation in any way shape or form. 3. It is universally available at any given point in time. Islam is accessible to everyone at any given point in time by rejecting the worship of creation and worshiping One God purely. All prophets who have appeared from time to time brought the message of Islam. They were born on separate periods of time and came with different forms of commandments sent by God to guide and govern people, but the essence of their teachings were the same – to worship the One True God without partners. So there, that is what Islam is all about – in a nutshell. But that is not the end of this presentation. Islam is the only religion that offers a falsification test, it categorically claims that it is the True Religion, and here is what you need to do to prove that it could be False: {“Do they not then consider the Qur’an? Had it been from any other than Allah, they would surely found therein many contradictions”} (Qur’an 4:82). This is a clear challenge to the non-Muslim. Basically, it invites him to find a mistake. As a matter of fact, the seriousness and difficulty of the challenge aside, the actual presentation of such a challenge in the first place is not even in human nature and is inconsistent with man’s personality. Imagine reading a book and there’s a note from the Author at the end saying, “This book is perfect. There are no mistakes on it. Find one if you can!” The readers will probably not sleep until finding a mistake after a challenge like that. This is not the way human beings speak. They do not offer challenges like that. But here we have it in the Qur’an, a direct challenge saying: “If you have a better idea as to where this book came from, here’s all you need to do – find a mistake!” This is the way the Qur’an approaches people. So if you are still skeptical despite the self-evident proofs and logical arguments presented to validate Islam’s claim, here is an opportunity, a chance to invalidate that claim! All you need to do is to find a mistake, one single mistake in the Qur’an – contradicting statements perhaps, grammatical error, or just one misspelled word. Go find it. You can even seek help from others. Collaborate your efforts in finding one single mistake in the Qur’an. All you need to do to invalidate and falsify Islam’s claim is to disprove the Qur’an’s authenticity. This challenge has been posed at humans over 1400 years and to date no one has ever done it, and as always the challenge still stands open today. To expound my point about the Qur’anic challenge and falsification test, there is an amazing incident that happened at the time of Prophet Muhammad that illustrates this point. The Prophet had an uncle by the name of Abu Lahab. This man hated Islam to such an extent that he used to follow the Prophet around in order to discredit him. If Abu Lahab saw the Prophet talking to a stranger, he would wait until they parted and he would go to the stranger and ask him, “What did he tell you? Did he say,'Black'? Well, it's 'White'. Did he say 'Morning'? Well, it's 'Night'.” He faithfully said the exact opposite of whatever he heard from the Prophet. However, about ten years before Abu Lahab died, a little chapter in the Qur’an was revealed about him: {“May the hands of Abu Lahab be perished! And he is perished! His wealth will not avail him or that which he had gained. He will be burnt in a Fire of blazing flames!”} (Qur’an 111:1-3). For ten years all Abu Lahab had to do was to say, “I heard it has been revealed to Muhammad that I will never change, that I will never become a Muslim and will enter the Hell-fire. Well, I want to become a Muslim now. How do you like that? What do you think of your divine revelation now?” But he never did that. And yet that is exactly the kind of behavior one would have expected from him since he always sought to contradict Islam. He could therefore finished Islam very easily. He needed only to go to the Muslims to announce his conversion. They had in their hands the revelation which said that this man is doomed to punishment. It is as if the Prophet said, “You hate me and want to finish me? Here, say these words, and I am finished. Come on, say them!” But Abu Lahab never said them. Ten years! And in all that time he never accepted Islam. How could Prophet Muhammad possibly have known for sure that Abu Lahab would fulfill the Qur’anic revelation? How could he possibly have been so confident as to give someone ten years to discredit his claim of prophethood? The only answer is that he was truly Allah’s messenger, for in order to put forth such a risky challenge, one has to be entirely convinced that he has divine revelation. A Muslim does not necessarily mean a follower of Prophet Muhammad. A person who followed Moses when he splits the sea while being chased by the army forces of Pharaoh, a person who followed Jesus after he brought the dead to life and cured those who were born blind, a person who followed Jonah when he finally conveyed the message of God after he was brought out from the belly of the whale, a person who followed Noah inside the Ark to be saved from the big flood of water, any person who followed one of the many prophets, who believed and worshiped the One True God without partners is called a Muslim. Therefore anyone, born at any place, and at any given point in time can be a Muslim, even before the time of Prophet Muhammad, because Islam is what the prophets had been calling their people since the time of Adam. But after Prophet Muhammad, since he is the last of the prophets, there is only one acceptable path that today one can follow the message brought by prophets of the past. Today, the only option left to follow the way of Abraham, the way of Moses, the way of Noah, the way of Jesus, and the way of all the earlier prophets is by following Prophet Muhammad. His message was the same as that was conveyed by prophets of the past in different periods of time. All of them came with one message – the message of Islam. The word Islam is the name of the central principle of the True Religion, and that is submission of man’s will to the will of God. And anyone who does so is a Muslim, regardless of whether he had or she had lived in the time of Noah, Job, David, Solomon, Jacob, Abraham, Jonah, Moses, Jesus, or Adam. Whoever submits their will to Allah according to the teachings of the prophets – as they originally taught them – that person is a Muslim. |
What you did not know about Islam! FRIDAY, JULY 13, 2012 Dr. Aliyu U. Tilde at 5:28 PM Discourse 348: The Fulani and the Genocide Dream of Jang Discourse 348 By Dr. Aliyu U. Tilde The Fulani and the Genocide Dream of Jang The death of a Senator and a member of the Plateau State House of Assembly has once more drawn the attention of the country to the unending crisis on the Plateau, not because there was cessation in the conflict before their deaths but because the crisis has started to take a new dimension altogether. The list of victims has, for the first time in the history of ethno-religious conflicts in Nigeria, started to include the elite, and the politicians especially. While the sad development seems to worry everyone and there are renewed calls for peace from many quarters, reports indicate that the Joint Task Force (JTF), whose actions was responsible for the escalation of the crisis recently, is busy destroying Fulani settlements in Barikin Ladi amd Riyom Local Government Areas, adding fuel to fire. Luggere, a Fulani stronghold, was destroyed yesterday and its inhabitants forcefully dispersed. "This morning", the Secretary of Miyetti Allah in Barikin Ladi Local Government, Malam Mohammed Adam told the Daily Trust yesterday, "soldiers came and started burning Fulani settlements. As I speak to you now, they are busy burning all Fulani settlements in Shong II, Wuro Bello, Gure Danegu, Dyola, Rakweng, Sharu, Kuzeng, Luggel, Rachi, Matse and Afan. They are backed up with helicopters and tanks." Once more, in the quest for peace, the Nigerian authorities are repeating the mistake they committed with Boko Haram in 2009. They have not quenched that fire since. Yet, they are starting a bigger one. The Background A proper understanding of the conflict must be located within the framework of the genocidal agenda of the Berom. They have vowed to cleanse the areas they dominate of the Hausa and the Fulani. Today, except in their strongholds like Sabongidan Danyaya, Barikin Ladi town, and few other tin settlements like Dorawar Babuje, all the Hausa villages in Berom-dominated areas have been wiped out. The countryside has been cleansed of nearly forty such settlements. The flight of the Hausa and sedentary Fulani was not prompted by cowardice, I believe, but by the luxury of the alternative they have. They could migrate into the comfort of other Hausa communities in other towns in the state or neighbouring ones to continue with their farming and petty trading. Of course, their flight comes with a lot of loss of capital and property. Nevertheless, they should be grateful to nature for endowing them with that option, which it has denied the cattle Fulani. This fact is at the core of the ongoing conflict. It was not that the Berom spared the Fula naturalis in cognizance of the longstanding association between the two groups. Not at all. Many attacks have been moffered by Berom militia but, this time, unlike in the case with the Hausa, the Fulani in all their major settlements in Beromland have so far been repelling such attacks successfully with equal, if not superior, force. It is this balance of terror that has enabled the Fulani to stay put there, while the fuel of genocide continues to burn in the heart of the Berom emperor, His Excellency, Governor David Jonah Jang. The Fulani has to do this because nature has not offered him a better choice as it did to others. Nature has consigned the Fulani to his cattle and in Africa the cattle has consigned him to the bush. He has no option except to live in the countryside where his master – the cattle – would flourish. In the gospel of his survival, he must cherish the grass and fight to the last drop of his blood for his natural master to graze uncultivated forests and grassland. Since his appearance in West Africa a millennium ago, he has obediently followed his cattle to wherever they led him. There is hardly any country in West, Central and, now, East Africa where he has not set his foot on and he continues to press southward, following the African Drainage Basin, until one day his herd drinks from the Orange River in South Africa. The conflict with the Berom has endured precisely because it is among the very few cases where attempts were made in history to expel the Fulani completely from a place. Nowhere has this strategy ever succeeded in the history of West Africa since it started in the period of Sonni Ali, one of the kings of the ancient Songhai Empire. Conflict with the Fulani could be prolonged and they may even sustain heavy casualties and disappear for a while; but soon their cattle would guide them back, one way or the other, to settle on the once hostile land. Only the tsetse fly has succeeded in barring the them from some territories, before. Today, even that threat is gone, with deforestation and the availability of effective drugs against bovine blood parasites. Their cows are today successfully grazing in the Niger Delta, on the Atlantic coast. This understanding is important in the scheme of any dream, conflict or peace that involves the Fulani. His natural burden to cater for the cow must be recognized. This has led him to the innate belief that his cattle have a universal right to natural grass wherever it may be, just as the Americans believe in mankind’s universal rights to natural resources. Beromland cannot be an exception. All the Fulani asks for is grass, water and respect for his life and property. Nothing more. He is not interested in competing with the Berom in politics, education or trade. Almost all African tribes he visited so far have granted him those rights and that of passage through their territory to wherever his masters would take him. If only the Berom, as many other tribes did, would appreciate the burden that his Fulani brother carris and allow him to graze the uncultivated fields without harassment or attempt to evict him, peace with the Fulani would be as easy as breathing air. Is this a special demand that the Fulani are obliged to beg for? No. The Fulani are Nigerians as much as any other group. Every tribe in Nigeria traces its origin somewhere outside the country and from where, according to its elders, it immigrated. The Berom, for example, trace their origins to Niger Republic! Admittedly, the Fulani are the most recent arrivals, starting just some 500 years ago, but that does not make them less bonafide citizens of Nigeria. He is a native of Nigeria. By official connotation, a native is any non-European living in the country at the time of British conquest. The Fulani is entitled to constitutional rights like any other Nigerian. He may be living alone in the bush, with his nuclear family and herd of cows. He may be illiterate with no knowledge of the constitution or common law. He may be weak, without a political body supporting him or protecting his rights. But Nigerian he remains, undeniably. Over the past 400 years, the Fulani herdsmen have lived on the Plateau peacefully with all other native groups without any major conflict. They have contributed to its rural economy, including jobs for families whose members they employ to attend to their cows. They have raised many children of other tribes and benefitted them in various ways. A story that Governor Jang is never tired of telling people is how he was raised by a Fulani family and sponsored his early education. Now he is paying them back with deaths and destruction! His majesty, the Gbong Gwom of Jos, Mr. Gyang Buba, ascribes his Fulani surname to a Fulani neighbour his family once lived with. And so on. The two examples speak volumoft about the peaceful coexistence that has developed over the centuries between the Fulani and other tribes on the Bauchi Plateau - as it is properly called in geography. Escalation The Fulani believe that the recent escalation in the crisis is caused by a new Berom strategy. Knowing very well from previous major encounters that his people are no match to the Fulani even with the resources of government at his disposal (he once offered to buy their men braziers when thousands of them fled their towns after their defeat in one of those encounters last year) and neither can he convince the federal government to withdraw the soldiers from the streets, Jang has now resorted to using the JTF under its new Commander to fight his proxy war against the Fulani. If one commander could decline the offer, he can be replaced by another whoEqui would take it. And of taking it many people are accusing the new JTF commander, Major-General Henry Ayoola. Thus, under him, the death of a promiscuous, heavy drinking mobile policeman under the JTF and the loss of his rifle at Karaku were instantly, without any investigation, hanged on the neck of all the Fulani and troops went on mass destruction of their homes and cows in Bangwai and dozens of their villages in Barikin Ladi local governments. Yet, when the Fulani complained of the destruction, the JTF publicly denied knowledge of such attacks. And it continues to claim ignorance on what is now common knowledge. Are we witnessing a repeat of Maiduguri here? Every rational Nigerian will agree that the strategy of using crass force to settle civilian issues does not work. This was the mistake that the Nigerian authorities made in the case of Boko Haram and for which the country is paying dearly today. When compared to the international brotherhood of the Fulani, Boko Haram could just be a drop in the ocean. Government is punishing the victims of the Berom genocide agenda. Why is the conflict in Plateau State now reduced to Berom territory only? Are they the only tribe among whom the Fulani live in the state? Why would, in the quest for peace, must the homes of innocent citizens be destroyed? Why is the JTF denying them the return to their ruined homes? How can the death of a policeman and the loss of his rifle justify these human rights abuses? Let us not forget that the conflict with Boko Haram started by the shooting of their members at a funeral procession who did not wear a motorcycle helmet. Is riding a motorcycle without a helmet enough a justification to kill many Nigerian citizens? If the JTF had taken it's time investigate the killer of the promiscuous policman, the crisis would not have escalated in the first place. The lives of the Senator and many others would have been saved. But many people believe that it is an agenda. The Agenda There is a general understanding amongst the residents of the State that only the state governor has the key to its peace. That key doe not have a duplicate. Unfortunately, as General Jeremiah Husaini (rtd), one of the elders in the state, said this morning over the BBC, the governor is not disposed to the peaceful resolution of the crisis. He impervious to advice, said the retired general. One may dismiss Husaini as a persistent Tarok opponent of governor Jang. He is not, at least on this case. Though the crisis started before his tenure, by 2007 when Jang was sworn in as the governor, most of the ethno-religious conflicts in the state have ceased. Dariye’s dream of cleansing the Plateau of Hausa- Fulani had clearly proved unattainable and abandoned especially after he was rustled by Obasanjo and the EFCC. People of various ethnic groups were moving about freely in the state without any hindrance. Business returned. Some who fled had even started returning. However, Jang renewed the genocidal dream by committing himself to three Berom-centred goals: developing his Berom homeland, cleansing it of the much bigoted Hausa- Fulani, and vesting all political power in Jos and its environs in his tribesmen. This is why the entire state is quiet, except Beromland. Jang has largely succeeded on all the three objectives. At the expense of human lives, he has made other groups inconsequential in the scheme of things in Jos and its environs. That was his strategy behind conducting the local government election of 2008 against all security advice. He has also built a good road network in his entire Beromland, to the envy of other ethnic groups in the state. The roads leading even to remotest Berom villages are either completed and asphalt rendered or about to be completed. He has, as we noted earlier, also succeeded in expelling most Hausas and many sedentary Fulani from most of the tin mining settlements in Beromland. The only people he is yet to beat are the cattle Fulani. Expelling the Fulani from Beromland is a record that Jang would like to achieve but from what is going on, the Fulani have vowed never to allow him win that gold medal. So long as grass will continue to grow there, so long as the land and property the Fulani legitimately acquired remain there, so long as their lives and property are vandalized without the protection from government, these African gypsies, from all indications, will continue to fight for their dear lives and those of their masters. Their basic constitutional rights are the minimum that I know they, like any other group of Nigerians, will never compromise on. The Road to Peace The road to peace therefore is one: the constitution as I have always argued. Let the dream of cleansing Beromland of Fulani end in the heart of Jang and he will find the Fulani instantly willing to embrace peace. This has happened in other parts of the state. As the governor, Jang has vowed to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians under his domain. He must keep that promise. Only then will Berom and Fulani live in peace. Otherwise, this crisis will last for generations to come. As a side note, the JTF under its new commander must not be partial on this matter. If it cannot protect the Fulani, it must not join forces with Jang to eliminate them and their property. Attempting to do so will definitely lead to loss of more lives of Berom and their supporters. The Fulani cannot be eliminated. They have never been. Let me assure all concerned that in spite of the ongoing brutality the Fulani will survive this crisis. So far they have survived the hostilities of ancient Mali, Songhai, Gobir, and Borno empires. Some of those empires they crippled, some they stamped out completely in spite of their small number, and with the rest they were able to live peacefully until the present time. In all those instances, they were equipped with nothing but three things that nobody can deny them: the valour of the nomad, two, the strength that they derive from their unmatched group feeling – or ‘asabiyya as Ibn Khaldun would call it and, three, the strong thirst for justice. That group feeling has been responsible for the defeat of most sedentary dynasties in the past. It is also the key to the survival of the nomads today. As for their thirst for justice, they are never satisfied until it is served in full measure their aggressors, either by the authorities or by them. The power of Jang cannot match that of Ahmad Sekou Toure, the longest serving Mallinke President of Guinea who revived the hate of his ancestor, Sonni Ali. Toure assassinated and murdered in cold blood over thirty thousands Fulani intellectuals, leaders and tribesmen during his 26-year tenure. But they survived him, using their estrangement to work harder until they gained control of over 80% of the Guinean economy today. Jang, in spite of the support he is able to buy, is not more than a child trying to break a coconut with his teeth. Ridding Beromland of Fulani can only be temporary and certainly makes it more vulnerable to attacks by their brothers from other parts of West Africa. Take this to the bank. As a minority in the area and on the disadvantaged side in the conflict, the Fulani were not successful in initiating peace with the Berom in the past. All their attempts were rebuffed. It is the move of the more preponderant and government-backed Berom that would be successful, given their monopoly over land and state resources. But the Berom, even if they want peace, are under the spell of their emperor, Jang. He controls their paramount chief and their youths. He has a choice between peace and violence. The choice of violence, on the one hand, is not a wise one because violence is a two-way commodity: Pain on this side, and pain on the other. With the egalitarian Fulani, you get just as much pain as you give him. The road to peace, on the other, is quiet and its results are three-dimensional: In this case, peace to the Berom, peace to the Fulani and peace to other Nigerians living on the Plateau. With the support he enjoys from the press, his ethnic group, law enforcement agents, Plateau courts and the state treasury, Jang may foolishly choose to remain recalcitrant and prefer violence to peace. We pray that he one day sees the light, become wiser and listen to elders of the State such that the lives of to meddle into Plateau affairs. Lastly, may peace be upon the leader who brings peace to his people. And already blessed are the people who seek justice, no matter the odds, without surrendering. Bauchi |

Do not respond to evil with evil, repel evil with good. Do not oppress one another, be merciful and kind to one another. Do not be hard or aggressive with one another, be soft, kind, and understanding with one another making things easy for each other. Do not be jealous or envious of one another, bear no malice and spite for each other, want what you have for others to have the same. All of these are amongst the many excellent moral teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), moral teachings that would make each one of us a better person if we acted on them. |

hmmm, This yeye people deceiving people think we people dey myopic. Na today. Another lame attempt from the clueless man to exploit on our yearnings. Spending over N100m per day on campaign rallies from taxpayers funds when there are reasonable ventures to channel such. Sorry joe, but this time you can get my vote, simple, certainly not with promise of stable power supply. You have so far been tested and proven to be untrustworthy. Big spender! |
The wind of change is fast blowing with much aggression. He who refuses to go with it will be swept away by it. Team BB 2011 by the grace of the Almighty! |
Their 99 days just got complete. As it is said, everyday for the thief, one day for the owner. Whatever you do in the dark will one day come to light, surely. Bunch of greedy and uncontented idiots! |
nah, you guys are not making sense with the negative comments being made against the only presidential aspirant who has the gut to openly welcome defeat if it comes and rather not show his desperation by making the presidency a do or die affair as our brothers gej and atiku are currently exhibiting. I think you guys are on the wrong sentiment. You should be rebranding you thoughts. I am only trying to be realistic here. Nigeria is in a mess and we certainly dont need a grossly incompetent gej or a sorry ibb to clean it all up. What we need is an incorruptible leader with a strong personality, vision n very good foresight with an ability to make the right decisions at the right time. A leader who is success driven and people focused with an unbiased mind, a capable and competent leader having a very good heart but swift in dealing with the corrupt and bad elements in our society to enable us move forward. We need an effective leader whose leadership will be felt at the grassroots not just in the fct. Gej has failed us in all this indices i have mentioned. I dont need to give proofs, its clear and its still occuring. Call it sentiment or otherwise, buhari remains the very best option available that can be trusted with the leadership of our great nation nigeria. He carries my vote anyday. Mind you, i dont know him personally, neither do i have any contact with him or any of his campaign organisations. This is in fact the very first time i've come out plainly to voice out my support for this man. Any rational or reasonable person would do the same, Besides, i believe i may not be far from the truth if i say i probably could be voicing out the mind of about or more than a hundred million nigerians who choose to be realistic, rationale in thinking and not sentimental. Over to you guys, |
its surprising that there are no comments about this interesting news. Sanusi haters where una dey? |
to be honest goodluck truly has nothing to offer; only empty promises. What has he done or achieved so far. Nothing positive or in fact no meaningful development or even realistic projects on ground. So much funds are set aside/spent on projects without the necessary or significant results which are not even accounted for. Take for instance the N10bn for independence celebrations, $5.6bn for power sector, just to mention a few. It just business as usual for the game of depleting and looting public treasury. The rule remains 'do it smartly & dont get caught'. Nigerians be wise! I must be insane, blind and daft to support or vote such a slow poke who has nothing to offer to this nation come 2011 election. |
goodluck has nothing to offer; only empty promises. What has he done or achieved so far. Nothing positive or in fact no meaningful development or realistic projects. So much funds are set aside/spent on projects without the necessary or significant results which are not even accounted for. Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abdul Muttalib Born 570 C.E. (Christian Era); died 633 C.E. The following is based on books, manuscripts, texts and actual eyewitness accounts, too numerous to mention herein, preserved in original form throughout the centuries by both Muslims and non-Muslims. Many people today are discussing Prophet Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention. Who was he exactly? What did he teach? Why was he loved so much by some and hated so much by others? Did he live up to his claims? Was he a holy man? Was he a prophet of God? What is the truth about this man? You be the judge. Here are the facts as narrated by thousands of people, many of whom knew him personally. § He was born to a noble tribe to the lineage of the leaders of Makkah. § His name comes from the Arabic root "hamd " and literally means "praised one." People at his time and until this very moment, praise him many times per day, may Allah exalt his mention. § He never fell into the common practice of his tribesmen to worship statues, idols or man-made "gods." § He believed that God was truly One God, and as such, He was to be worshipped alone, without any other "gods" beside Him. § He held the Name of God in the highest of reverence and never took God's Name in vain or for any vain glorious purpose. § He despised false worship and all of the complexities and degradation to which it leads. § He adhered to the Commandments of Almighty God, just as prophets of old had done in the past. § He never committed adultery, and he forbade others from doing it. § He forbade usury and interest on money lending, as Jesus, may Allah exalt his mention, had done centuries before him. § He never gambled and did not allow it. § He never drank alcohol or strong drink; even though it was a very normal thing for people of his time and place. § He did not engage in gossip and used to turn away from hearing anything related to it. § He fasted for days at a time to be closer to Almighty God and away from the narrowness of worldly attractions. § He taught that Jesus, may Allah exalt his mention, was the immaculate conception and miracle birth of Mary, and that she was among the best creation of Almighty God. § He insisted even to the Jews of Medina, that Jesus, may Allah exalt his mention, was the Messiah, the Christ, the one predicted to come in their Torah (Old Testament). § He said Jesus, may Allah exalt his mention, did many miracles by the permission of Almighty God, curing the lepers, restoring sight to the blind and even bringing a dead man back to life. § He stated clearly that Jesus, may Allah exalt his mention, was not dead, rather Almighty God had raised him up. § He foretold that Jesus, may Allah exalt his mention, is going to return again in the Last Days to lead the true believers in a victory over the evil and unrighteous people, and he will destroy the Anti-Christ. § He commanded the payment of charity to the poor and he was the defender and protector of widows, orphans and the wayfarers. § He ordered people to unite with their families and honor the ties of kinship and he restored relationships between family members. § He required his followers to engage only in lawful marriage relationships with women, and forbade sex outside of Almighty God's Ordinance. § He insisted on giving women their proper rights, dowries, inheritance and property. § His patience and humble attitude were exemplary and all who knew him had to admit to these virtues. A. He never lied, never broke a trust never bore false witness, and he was famous with all the tribes in Makkah and was known as: "The Truthful" (Al-Ameen). B. He never once engaged in sex outside of marriage, nor did he ever approve of it, even though it was very common at the time. C. His only relationships with women were in legitimate, contractual marriages with proper witnesses according to law. D. His relationship to Ayesha was only that of marriage. Their relationship is described in every detail by Ayesha herself in the most loving and respectful manner as a match truly made in heaven. Ayesha is considered as one of the highest scholars of Islam and lived out her entire life only having been married to Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention. She never desired any other man, nor did she ever utter a single negative statement against Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention. E. He forbade any killing until the orders came from Allah. Even then the limits were clearly spelled out and only those engaged in active combat against the Muslims or Islam were to be fought in combat. And even then, only according to very strict rules from Allah. F. Killing any innocent life was forbidden. G. There was no genocide of Jews. He offered mutual protection and forgiveness to the Jews even after they broke their covenants with him many times. They were not attacked until it was clearly proven they were traitors during time of war and tried to bring down the prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, and the Muslims at any cost. Retaliation was only to those Jews who had turned traitor and not others. H. Slaves were common in those days for all nations and tribes. It was Islam that encouraged freeing of the slaves and the great reward from Allah for those who did so. Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, gave the example of this by freeing slaves and encouraging all of his followers to do the same. Examples include his own servant (who was actually considered like a son to him) Zaid ibn Al Haritha and Bilal the slave who was bought by Abu Bakr only for the purpose of freeing him. I. While there were many attempts of assassination made on Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, (most famous was the night that Ali took his place in bed while he and Abu Bakr escaped to Madinah), he did not allow his companions to slaughter any of those who had been involved in these attempts. Proof for this is when they entered Makkah triumphantly and his first words were to command his followers not to harm such and such tribes and so and so families. This was one of the most famous of his acts of forgiveness and humbleness. J. Military combat was forbidden for the first thirteen years of prophethood. The desert Arabs did not need anyone to tell them how to fight or do combat. They were experts in this area and held feuds amongst tribes that lasted for decades. It was not until the proper method of warfare was instituted by Allah in the Quran, with proper rights and limitations according His Commandments, that any retaliation or combat was sanctioned. Orders from Allah made it clear who was to be attacked, how and when and to what extent fighting could take place. K. Destruction of infrastructures is absolutely forbidden except when it is ordained by Allah in certain instances and then only according to His Commands. L. Cursing and invoking evil actually came to the prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, from his enemies, while he would be praying for their guidance. Classic example is that of his journey to At-Taif where the leaders would not even hear him out nor offer so much as the normal courtesy called for and instead they set the children of the street against him, throwing rocks and stones at him until his body was bleeding so much, blood filled his sandals. He was offered revenge by the angel Gabriel, if he would give the command, Allah would cause the surrounding mountains to fall down upon them destroying them all. Instead of cursing them or asking for their destruction, he prayed for them to be guided to worship their Lord alone, without any partners. M. Prophet Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, claimed every person who is born is born in a state of ISLAM (submission to God), as a Muslim (MU-Islam means; "one who does ISLAM" i.e.; submits to God's Will and obeys His Commandments). Then as they grow older they begin to distort their faith according to the influence of the prevailing society and their own prejudices. N. Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, taught his followers to believe in the God of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, David, Solomon and Jesus, peace be upon them all, and to believe in them as true prophets, messengers and slaves of Almighty Allah. He insisted on ranking all the prophets up at the highest level without any distinction between them. O. He also taught the Torah (Old Testament), Zaboor (Psalms) and Injeel (Gospel or New Testament) were originally from the very same source as the Quran, from Allah. P. He prophesied and foretold of events to come and they happened as he had said. He even predicted something from the past that would come true in the future, and it has. Q. The Quran states pharaoh was drowned in the Red Sea while chasing after Moses and Allah said He would preserve Pharaoh as a sign for the future. Dr. Maurice Bucaille in his book, "Bible, Quran and Science " makes it clear this has happened and the very person of Pharaoh has been discovered in Egypt and is now on display for all to see. R. This event took place thousands of years before Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, and it came true in the last few decades, many centuries after his death. There has been more written about the prophet Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, than any other person on earth. He has been praised very high even by famous non-Muslims for centuries. One of the first examples we quote from is from the Encyclopedia Britannica , as it confirms (regarding Muhammad)” ". . . a mass of detail in the early sources shows that he was an honest and upright man who had gained the respect and loyalty of others who were likewise honest and upright men." (Vol. 12). Another impressive tribute to Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention is in the very well written work of Michael H. Hart, "The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History." He states that the most influential person in all history was Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, with Jesus in the third place. Examine his actual words: "My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular level." Michael H. Hart , THE 100: A RANKING OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSONS IN HISTORY, New York: Hart Publishing Company, Inc., 1978, page. 33. While we are reviewing statements from famous non-Muslims about Prophet Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, consider this: "Philosopher, orator, apostle, legislator, warrior, conqueror of ideas, restorer of rational dogmas, of a cult without images; the founder of twenty terrestrial empires and of one spiritual empire, that is Muhammad. As regards all standards by which human greatness may be measured, we may well ask, is there any man greater than he? " Lamartine , HISTOIRE DE LA TURQUIE, Paris, 1854, Vol. II, pp. 276-277. George Bernard Shaw, a famous writer and non-Muslim says: "He must be called the Savior of Humanity. I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it much needed peace and happiness." (The Genuine Islam, Singapore, Vol. 1, No. 8, 1936) . K.S. Ramakrishna Rao, an Indian (Hindu) professor of Philosophy, in his booklet "Muhammad the Prophet of Islam" calls him the "perfect model for human life." Professor Ramakrishna Rao explains his point by saying: "The personality of Muhammad, it is most difficult to get into the whole truth of it. Only a glimpse of it I can catch. What a dramatic succession of picturesque scenes. There is Muhammad the Prophet. There is Muhammad the Warrior; Muhammad the Businessman; Muhammad the Statesman; Muhammad the Orator; Muhammad the Reformer; Muhammad the Refuge of Orphans; Muhammad the Protector of Slaves; Muhammad the Emancipator of Women; Muhammad the Judge; Muhammad the Saint. All in all these magnificent roles, in all these departments of human activities, he is alike a hero." Mahatma Gandhi, speaking on the character of Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, says in 'YOUNG INDIA' : "I wanted to know the best of one who holds today undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind, I became more than convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the 2nd volume (of the Prophet's biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of the great life." Thomas Carlyle in his 'Heroes and Hero Worship' , was simply amazed as to: "How one man single handedly, could weld warring tribes and wandering Bedouins into a most powerful and civilized nation in less than two decades." Diwan Chand Sharma wrote in "The Prophets of the East ": "Muhammad was the soul of kindness, and his influence was felt and never forgotten by those around him" . (D.C. Sharma, The Prophets of the East, Calcutta, 1935, pp. 12). Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, was nothing more or less than a human being, but he was a man with a noble mission, which was to unite humanity on the worship of ONE and ONLY ONE GOD and to teach them the way to honest and upright living based on the commands of God. He always described himself as, 'A Slave and Messenger of God' and so indeed every action of his proclaimed to be. Speaking on the aspect of equality before God in Islam, the famous poetess of India, Sarojini Naidu says: "It was the first religion that preached and practiced democracy; for, in the mosque, when the call for prayer is sounded and worshippers are gathered together, the democracy of Islam is embodied five times a day when the peasant and king kneel side by side and proclaim: 'God Alone is Great', I have been struck over and over again by this indivisible unity of Islam that makes man instinctively a brother." (S. Naidu, Ideals of Islam, vide Speeches & Writings , Madras, 1918, p. 169). In the words of Professor Hurgronje: "The league of nations founded by the prophet of Islam put the principle of international unity and human brotherhood on such universal foundations as to show candle to other nations." He continues, "the fact is that no nation of the world can show a parallel to what Islam has done towards the realization of the idea of the League of Nations." Edward Gibbon and Simon Ockley, on the profession of ISLAM, writes in "History of the Saracen Empires" : "I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, AND MAHOMET, AN APOSTLE OF GOD' is the simple and invariable profession of Islam. The intellectual image of the Deity has never been degraded by any visible idol; the honor of the Prophet have never transgressed the measure of human virtues; and his living precepts have restrained the gratitude of his disciples within the bounds of reason and religion." (History of the Saracen Empires , London, 1870, p. 54) . Wolfgang Goethe, perhaps the greatest European poet ever, wrote about Prophet Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention. He said: "He is a prophet and not a poet and therefore his Koran is to be seen as Divine Law and not as a book of a human being, made for education or entertainment." (Noten und Abhandlungen zum Weststlichen Dvan, WA I, 7, 32). People do not hesitate to raise to divinity and even make 'gods' out of other individuals whose lives and missions have been lost in legend. Historically speaking, none of these legends achieved even a fraction of what Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, accomplished. And all his striving was for the sole purpose of uniting mankind for the worship of One God on the codes of moral excellence. Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, or his followers never at any time claimed that he was a son of God or the God-incarnate or a man with divinity – but he always was and is even today considered as only a Messenger chosen by God. Today after a lapse of fourteen centuries, the life and teachings of Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, have survived without the slightest loss, alteration or interpolation. They offer the same undying hope for treating mankind's many ills, which they did when he was alive. This is not a claim of Muhammad’s, may Allah exalt his mention, followers, but the inescapable conclusion forced upon by a critical and unbiased history. |
