EXCLUSIVE: CBN Will NOT Devalue Naira, Mulls Proposal For New Forex Window

Devaluation of the naira will not feature on the agenda of the monetary policy committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) holding on May 23-24, TheCable can report.

This will come as a surprise to many analysts who were expecting adjustment in the official exchange rate following the decision of the federal government to increase petrol price from N86.50 to N145 per litre in “partial deregulation”.

Official devaluation was thought to be next on the card to create some stability in the forex market and narrow the gap between the CBN and secondary rates.

There are also proposals that the CBN should open a second window — called the autonomous foreign exchange market (AFEM) — to encourage independent forex inflows at a rate closer to market realities.
While the CBN officially fixes the dollar at N197, the interbank sells at N285 and the black market goes for N346.

The federal government had asked oil marketers to resume fuel importation to ease the burden on NNPC and end persistent queues at the filling stations.
As part of the agreement, the marketers were asked to source forex from the secondary market and price imported products accordingly.

This had sent the parallel market into a frenzy, with the naira selling for as high as N360 as currency speculators took position ahead of an expected official devaluation.
“It is not going to happen. There will be no devaluation,” a senior CBN official told TheCable.

Hi guys,

I have a question please and would really appreciate if someone could shed some light. I know we need to fund the blocked acct with approximately €8000 but considering the current exchange rate (380 or so), the naira equivalent we need is more than 3m naira. Now i see alot of ppl talking about 2m naira for the funding so i dont really understand. If there's another way to fund the account with lower(2m) which is being mentioned, please advice.

Hello house. I got admission to do MSc at TU Darmstadt. How did you guys go about the blocked account issue thanks

Please be advised that the Consulate General can only certify your signature for the necessary opening of a blocked account if you already have the admission letter of the university (a pdf printout is sufficient), as a copy of the admission letter has to be forwarded to the bank with the application form and your passport copy.

As soon as you have submitted your application for the opening of a blocked
account , you will receive a confirmation letter from the Consulate with which you can apply for your student visa.

I trust you find this information helpful. Attached please also find the checklist with further information concerning the opening of a blocked account .

account )
with Deutsche Bank
In order to open a blocked account with Deutsche Bank, you need to send an
application to the bank in Germany.

Your signature on the application form
needs to be certified. The certification of signature can be done free of charge at
the Consulate General in Lagos or at the Embassy in Abuja during normal
business hours.

Please bring along:

1. filled application form for a blocked account
.

2. international passport and 2 copies of the data page
.

3. admission letter of the german university and 2 copies thereof

You will have to sign the application form in presence of a Consular officer in
order to have your signature certified.

All forms and more information can be obtained from the homepage of the

Please note that it can take up to three weeks after the certification until the
bank account will be opened.

Mind you, the required amount for Blocked
account is 8050 euros. As a student, you are entitled to withdraw around 650-700 euros per month. this will be used for your daily/monthly upkeep.

Seriously misplaced priority. They should focus on improving postal delivery services with technology, completing the postal/zip code system so that every house in Nigeria can be identified with a zip code, acquiring more delivery vans, improve their customer service delivery with exceptional call center executives and "always available" help centers, and also improving their tracking systems. They can fight the competition with private firms like Fedex, and become the no 1 choice of delivery for online ordering.
