Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Tuesday that those who link his regime to Hamas’s attack on Israel were “mistaken” even if his country continues to “back Palestine and its fighting” against the Jewish state.

“We kiss the forehead and hands of thoughtful and intelligent masterminds [behind the attack] but those who say this latest epic is done by non-Palestinians suffer from miscalculations,” he said in his first public comments on the conflict. “They have not known the Palestinian nation and have underestimated them.”

He added that the assault inflicted an “irreparable defeat” to Israel’s military and intelligence apparatus which “cannot be easily repaired”.
