All eyes will be on Nigeria as the country goes to the polls over the next two weeks. The stakes are very high in what is most likely going to be the closest election in Nigeria’s history. It is imperative that we get these elections right. This would of course involve the commitment of all stakeholders: the electorate, the Independent National Electoral Commission, the government, security agencies, political parties and their supporters as well as election observers. Everyone has a role to play to ensure that these elections are free, fair and credible. Even more important, the elections must be devoid of incidents of intimidation and violence. For most of 2014, Marilyn Ogar, the spokesperson for Nigeria’s secret police, the State Security Service, SSS, cut out for herself a controversial portrait of a blunt security official who had no qualms issuing threats and attacking anyone or institution perceived to be critical of the Nigerian government. In the heat of the August 9 Osun State governorship election, won by the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ms. Ogar alleged links between the party and bomb attacks, and narrated how SSS officials rebuffed N14million offered as bribe by an unnamed party – although her description fit the APC. “A director in charge of election duties (security) was offered N4 million for himself and N10 million,” Ms. Ogar, a deputy director in the service, said at a news conference. “It is because the money was declined, that is why the certain political party is having a running battle with the DSS.” see more..................... http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/179191-exclusive-sss-spokesperson-marilyn-ogar-received-bribe-before-2014-osun-election.html |
The Supreme Court on Friday confirmed Godswill Akpabio as the validly-elected governor of Akwa Ibom State, in a unanimous decision that brought to a close a four-year legal tussle to unseat him. The court ruled that Mr. Akpabio was the suitable candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, a claim that had for years been challenged by Frank Okon, who also contested the party’s ticket in April 2011. Mr. Okon had asked the court to nullify Mr. Akpabio’s election because he (Okon) and his supporters were not availed the information on the scheduled primaries after the cancellation of the previous exercise. Mr. Okon’s argument was upheld at the level of the Court of Appeal. But, in a unanimous judgment delivered Friday by Justice Bode-Rhodes Vivour, on behalf of Justice John Fabiyi, and six other Justices, the Supreme Court set aside the ruling of the Appeal Court in favour of Mr. Okon and restored the judgment of the High Court on the matter. The High Court had ruled that Mr. Okon was not qualified to contest the outcome of the election in the first place, having admitted in his affidavit before the court that he and his supporters were not allowed to participate in the primaries. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/179223-breaking-supreme-court-upholds-akpabios-election.html |
Attacks by the Islamist armed group, Boko Haram, killed more than 1,000 civilians in 2015, based on witness accounts and an analysis of media reports, Human Rights Watch said Thursday. Boko Haram fighters have deliberately attacked villages and committed mass killings and abductions as their attacks have spread from northeast Nigeria into Cameroon, Chad, and Niger since February. Human Rights Watch interviews in late January with people who fled Yobe, Adamawa, and Borno states in northeastern Nigeria revealed horrific levels of brutality. Since mid-2014, Boko Haram fighters have seized control of scores of towns and villages covering 17 local government areas in these northeastern states, some of which were recaptured by Nigerian and Chadian forces in March 2015. Many of those towns have been reclaimed recently by the armies of Nigeria and neighbouring countries. “Each week that passes we learn of more brutal Boko Haram abuses against civilians,” said Mausi Segun, Nigeria researcher at Human Rights Watch. “The Nigerian government needs to make protecting civilians a priority in military operations against Boko Haram.” SEE MORE.......................... http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/179146-boko-haram-over-1000-civilians-killed-since-january-human-rights-watch.html |

The National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, Gani Adams, said his group is opposed to a former Lagos Governor, Bola Tinubu and his party, the All Progressives Congress, because Mr. Tinubu instructed governors of the South-West states not to deal with or empower the OPC. Mr. Adams said this at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday in reaction to reports that his organization plans to disrupt the forthcoming general elections. He said while Mr. Tinubu plotted to destroy the OPC by denying it of government patronage, President Goodluck Jonathan has been magnanimous, awarding pipeline protection contracts to leaders of the organisation and other militants across the country. “Deliberately Tinubu instructed all the governors (South-west governors) don’t work with OPC, don’t empower OPC, don’t associate yourself with OPC,” Mr. Adams said. read more.......................... http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/179053-while-tinubu-starved-us-jonathan-gave-us-multibillion-naira-pipeline-contracts-gani-adams.html |
By Nicholas Ibekwe [PREMIUM TIMES] and Austinn Ogannah [THE WILL] Nigeria will lose at least N549 billion ($2.8 billion) in oil royalty and petroleum tax if what appears a shady and absurd deal the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, is negotiating with the Nigerian subsidiary of Chinese-owned Addax Petroleum, sails through, a joint investigation by PREMIUM TIMES and THE WILL has revealed. This new shocking deal is reminiscent of the infamous Malabu Oil scandal in which the Attorney General was also named. It is not clear whether he is engaged in this new deal for pecuniary reasons. We learnt that Mr. Adoke is working to reach an out-of-court settlement in a law suit over a 15-year alleged miscalculation of oil royalty obligations and taxes worth $1.7billion and at least $1 billion respectively between Addax (plaintiff) on one side and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Attorney General of the Federation (defendants) on the other. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday said a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Charles Chukwuma, has no case to answer regarding investigations into allegations of bribery involving Securency Pty Ltd of Australia and officials of both the CBN and the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting (NSPM) Plc over the supply of polymer substrate to Nigeria. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, said after extensive investigation, the commission found that Mr. Soludo had nothing to do with the matter. Saying no wrongdoing was established against him, the EFCC boss said the former CBN governor has since been cleared. utswat said that the incident occurred at about 12.30 am on Thursday at Yenaka Community, a coastal settlement in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa state. Unidentified gunmen in the early hours of Thursday kidnapped Joseph Agama, the younger brother to Nigeria's Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke, Police sources say. Police Spokesman for Bayelsa Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the development on Thursday. He said that the command got a report shortly after the incident happened. According to Butswat, the police received a distress call on Thursday from the victim’s father, Maxwell Agama. Butswat said that the incident occurred at about 12.30 am on Thursday at Yenaka Community, a coastal settlement in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa state. Community sources said that the armed gunmen off with the victim to an unknown destination after abandoning their original boat. Family sources said that the kidnappers were yet to establish contact or demand ransom. It will be recalled that a sister to the minister, Osiyo Agama, was kidnapped in October 2014 in Port Harcourt and later rescued by a combined team of Joint Task Force and Department of State Security Services. Diezani who is known as a powerful minister in President Goodluck Jonathan cabinet and widely believed to be the most corrupt could afford to pay ransom requested by kidnappers who have now made a habit of abducting members of her family. Recently her donation of N70 million to the Bayelsa chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently causing crisis in the party that crisis led to the suspension of Col. Sam Inokoba as state chairman of the party. Diezani is also at the centre of controversial award of pipeline surveillance contracts to militiamen and ethnic warlords across Nigeria. Last week ex-militants shortchanged in the process staged a protest led to the deaths of an ex-militant in the hands of anti-riot policemen in Yenagoa. In Lagos, a group led by Yoruba militia leader, Gani Adams staged a protest in Lagos city that resulted in attack on campaign billboards of oppression figures and harassment of innocent members of the public, the protest caused panic and confusion. Mr Adams also stated that his group had just been awarded pipeline surveillance contract. |

Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has again advocated dialogue with the insurgent group, Boko Haram, saying the group has legitimate grievances despite its brutal five-year campaign that has killed more than 15,000 people, with hundreds of thousands displaced. The former president said Nigeria should not rule out talking to the terrorist group which recently pledged allegiance to Islamic State (ISIS) – but he said that should only happen after a sustained military campaign. Boko Haram’s run of violence against innocent people in schools, places of worship, markets and homes, only slowed relatively in the last few weeks in the face of increased military onslaught from Nigeria and neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroun.
