Hello house, please I need your wisdom on a choice of MSc to go for considering the latest trend in the industry and the need for 'in-demand' knowledge or skills. I am considering the following graduate programs:

Flow Assurance
Reservoir Engineering
Subsea Engineering
Offshore Engineering
Production Engineering

Could you please help me rank them bearing in mind importance/relevance, 'in-demand' and diversity of application.

The schools I am considering are University of Houston, Cranfield University, University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon's University, IPS and OTI-UNIPORT. Most especially the foreign colleges.

Please I am respectfully directing this question to every experienced person here.

Reservoir Engineering 40 percent
Production Engineering 20 percet
Flow Assurance 20 percent
Offshore Engineering 10 percent
Subsea Engineering 10 percent

Keep your house clean

It's his first visit, serve some refreshment and cookies (not the organic cookie)

Lastly, be the you he feel in love with. (though I imagine u may be a little uptight during the first few mins in his presence. But you'd later blend with time)

''My name is Mimi as my friends call me..am an undergraduate..I have a boyfriend and we have dated for 7months now. Since we started dating, this guy has not done anything for me. I understand perfectly well that he is serving so I don't disturb him about money..
But last night we had problem. The problem is he said the next time we see that we will have sex for a very long time unlike before. I then asked him that, after all these sex that we are having, that what will he leave for my husband if eventually we don't marry. Onlyto him to reply: he said he is eating the main thing now, that my husband will eat the remains.
When he noticed I was not happy with his response, he said he was joking.. Now my question is: should I still go ahead with this guy or should I quit?''

Let me ask IFA sad

My point is, cos someone is the indoor type does not mean he or she is not informed(not when all the information you could possibly be in need of is just a click away from you) or must be boring.

I'd tell you indoor people spend their time reading almost anything they come across. They'd beat you hands down on any topic you engage them on so long it's of interest to them.

They often the chatter box on social platforms...you can research that. They make up more than half of the people you find on any social platform.

some of them might be just what you've written above but believe me it applies to quite a few

I repeat, they are not necessarily boring. Cos they are not exposed to people, they might be kind of withdrawn but if you make them feel comfortable around you, you might just have to beg for a break if care is not taken.

I couldn't agree any less with you. Very well said. We seem to be having many phoney human behavioural analyst trending lately on Nairalander. E don tire me!

Hello everyone, please I need your help on my situation. I have been reading nairaland a lot lately and it has become a very informative source to me.Please any advice is needed. I graduated with a bachelors degree in petroleum engineering in the U.S. Due some issues I graduated with a second class lower. My first few undergrad classes were tough but I did reasonably well in all my petroleum engineering courses and geology courses. I graduated last year may 2014.As an international student I decided to job hunt using my OPT, I wasn't even sure I would get a job due to my grade point average but I did. After three months I eventually started working with one of big oil service companies.last week I had to quit my job due to issues of work permit renewal and sponsorship not being processed.Even my manager and hr were confused, they didn't know what to do. i was a bit down but not distraught. The job really challenged me, I gained a ton of experience and did things I didn't think I could accomplish ....now if feels like I'm back to square one. Struggling with grades and me finally pushing myself my last year to get a high grade point Lin my major courses really changed me as a person., but sometime it leaves me and my parents Disappionted that I didn't get it right from the beginning(I was 16/17 going in).My parents are advising me to go for masters, but I always think what are my chances with my low grade point average. And I know they dont have the funds for it right now but my mom keeps saying she will make it happen. In meantime I'm studying for my GRE and heading to Nigeria for the next nysc to do my service while I apply to grad programs or job hunt.

Please I need your advice for anyone that has been in a similar situation.
1. What are My chances of getting into a grad program with a low gpa and how have individuals accomplished this ?
2. What are my chances for employment in Nigeria after service?

Thanks

Now IT feels like I'm Back to Square One

Like Seriously

My Brother, nothing has been lost...!

And you are most certainly not back to square one...

Many people out there, including my humble self didn't have quite an impressive kick off back in school...

Most of us have seized the positive mentality of being first class products and acted on it to produce meaningful contributions to the society.

You got a job in a BIG coy overseas... That is where the huge difference lies when comparing western mentality to that of developing countries. One is being given equally opportunity to prove himself. However, one cannot entire blame the system as the need arises because of what i'd regard as an unemployment explosion.

Don't subject your morale and energy to punching by past flaws. You are a Petroleum Engineer for crying out loud!
You get foreign degree/certificates! You equally have industry experience (no matter how short it was)! You are at an advantage here.

I'm second with your folks that you go for your Msc. You can still gain admission with your degree (second class lower). People with third class also do, so why are you still bothered? You should be thankful for the support your familiy is willing to grant you, because Msc these days cost an arm, leg and even the head (if person no dey careful)

Ride on with your National Service. After which, put in for your Msc. You can get a job even before the program commences. If that happens, I'd suggest you you run a part time program. If not, during a full time program, you'd get posted to any industry of your choice by DPR (Department of Petroleum Resources) for internship to cover the period of your Thesis. With God special grace and your alertness, you'd get absorbed by the company.

This is all i can afford to say for the moment. Best of luck. And stop worrying abeg!!!

I just recently secured admission with the prestigious IPS in Uniport to study petroleum engineering and project development. I have a background in Chemical Engineering and a modicum about petroleum. Please I would need your advice on a lot as I would really wish to make the best of the MSc prog.

I will read through the thread while I send you a pm. I hope you will find time to respond to my query.

God bless.

Hello Bro,
Great job u doing here. thank GOD for people like u.
i am a mud logger, hoping to change carrier to Petrophysicist Ii ll prefer a hard copy of the Petrophysic book and a lagos training center for the software cos am a Lagos resident Pls.

Hard copy books in our profession aren't so easy to come by these days. Most times we get to find some of them on sale during oil and gas conferences. The most effective way to get one is to send someone overseas to get it for you and bring it along when coming back to the country.

Another way is to buy it online. Amazon.com is a good place to start.

I'm not so familiar with training centers here in lagos. Asides from the aforementioned ones in the earlier posts.

How do I respond to this? Well here in Africa, I've heard of the University of the Witwatersand being very good in earth science related courses and petroleum engineer. It's located in Jbourg, SA. Then as for overseas, many people prefer Canadian institutions coz it's a whole of easier staying back or getting a job after ones post graduate program unlike UK varsities. Though varsities in UK offer a robust package. Many of them. Also, our very own University of Ibadan is quite good. For me it's voted the best when it comes to geoscience. Best of luck!

Welcome on board Peterjosh
You are amongst a few that is privileged to have a good start. Use it to you advantage! And unlike many, including myself, you have a passion for Geology from the onset. These are very key essentials, as they will help sustain you throughout your stay in school and ultimately lead you to your desired destination.

Geoscience never has it easy in most schools. Be it State, Federal or Private owned. Even for yanke! ‎Where I graduated from, I was warned to pull out. I met people that have spilled, splashed, waterfalls,  name it! I even left some of them there! Some had to withdraw. These notorious chronicles of life as a geology undergraduate is enough to deter someone/anyone. More shocking sef be say, we were not more that 25% that graduated during my time. This is commonplace in my schools that offer geology. My senior/junior colleagues here can attest to this.

Now here is the deal. Before I proceed i'd like to share with you a quote. "If you get to a place, find out what the record is and break it! If there is none, set one!" Knowing where I am coming from, (once upon a time olodo) I have been lead to believe that no one is born dull. Everyone is a genius! Some of us aren't just "ready-made", We just need to cook ourself by ourself.‎ Our limitations are as a result of an inclined comprehension impedance. That na grammar.  Wetin I dey try talk be say, most of us have challenges with comprehension. (like you may have hard in the previous statement). One of the recommended way of defeating comprehension is reading vast. If one yeye book dey too speak plenty grammar making you appear like a mumu, drop it and find some simpler to understand the basis. I promise you that once you have been able to do that and you return to that same book, you go just dey laff yourself. With time, you'd get to develop your comprehension skills. Once you've been able to do that, you are on the go! Next will be the need to build a healthy reading habit. Set out objectives. It's good to have cross discipline knowledge, but based on priorities, your reading plan should encompass areas that are relevant to your academics. I don't use to be much of a reader. But I was obliged to become one when I realised it was unavoidable. Till I began enjoy reading. Today being a holiday for instance, I chose to stay indoors and watch some educative videos on youtube relating to different areas in geology. There are a lot of them with beautiful animations to aid your understanding in some stubborn areas of geoscience. Take a cue from some of the advise I posted earlier from my response to AAPS.

As regards software, there are a lot of them. It all depends where you'd like to major after school. For anyone that wants to get to the oil industry, I recommend Petrel. (it seem to be the leading software in the industry). Browse thru previous pages of this thread. I have shared it's manual and also provided a link to download a training dataset.
Back in school, I learnt how to use surfer to digitise maps. My fellow colleagues here can recommend or share whatever they have for you.

I hope i've been able to answer your question to its barest. Feel free to email or drop a post anytime. I'd respond as quick as I can. Best of luck!‎
