MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Suspected members of a radical Muslim sect shot and killed a community official, police said Sunday, a day after a similar killing of a policeman in a northeast Nigeria city beset by assassinations carried out by the group.

Police commissioner Simeone Midenda said Sunday that gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect shot and killed the head of the Borno state Vigilante Association Saturday night in the city of Maiduguri.

The association works with police to provide security.

Less than a day earlier, Midenda said two suspected Boko Haram members shot and killed a policeman in Maiduguri.

He said police are investigating but have made no arrests.

The sect has carried out a string of assassinations and bombings in northern Nigeria in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law in Africa's most populous nation.

The sect claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 suicide car bombing at the United Nations headquarters in the country that killed 23 people and wounded 116 others.

Also on Sunday, a police official in Nigeria's northeast said four people were killed after a blast rocked a police base in the town of Kwami just north of the state capital of Gombe.

Assistant Inspector General of Police John Moroke said one was a police officer and the three others were suspected bombers.

Gombe State police chief Arube Ghadi Abekunle said the base had been evacuated because there was at least one bomb that had not yet been detonated.

An AP reporter at the scene said there were about 10 burning cars in the base after the blast set ablaze its armory and administrative section.
