STOCKHOLM -- Sweden on Tuesday signed a formal request to join NATO, a day after the country announced it would seek membership in the 30-member military alliance. In neighboring Finland, lawmakers are expected later in the day to formally endorse Finnish leaders’ decision also to join.

The moves by the two Nordic countries, ending Sweden’s more than 200 years of military nonalignment and Finland’s nonalignment after World War II, have provoked the ire of the Kremlin.

While most NATO members are keen to welcome the two countries as quickly as possible, Turkey has potentially complicated their accession by saying it cannot allow them to become members because of their perceived inaction against exiled Kurdish militants.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday doubled down on comments last week indicating that the two Nordic countries´ path to NATO would be anything but smooth. All 30 current NATO countries must agree to open the door to new members. He accused the two Nordic countries of refusing to extradite “terrorists” wanted by his country.

In Stockholm, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde signed the formal request to join the Alliance, which she said would be sent to NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg

“It feels like we have taken a decision that is the best for Sweden,” she said while signing the document.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto arrived in Sweden for an official two-day visit and was welcomed by Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, who had invited him. Niinisto addressed Sweden's Parliament and said, “we took peace for granted; on Feb. 24 the peace was broken,” in a reference to the date that Ukraine was invaded by Russia.

“Our old ways of handling things no longer correspond to the new situation," Niinisto told Swedish lawmakers.“ Our relations with Russia have changed."

He also spoke about Erdogan's comments, saying they were “surprising and interesting.”

“Turkey’s statements have changed and toughened very quickly in recent days, but I am sure that we will resolve the situation with the help of constructive talks,” Niinisto said.

He is later to meet Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.

On Twitter, Niinisto said that “the timing is excellent, a strong and stable Nordic region is our common cause.”

During a brief press conference, Carl XVI Gustaf said "the visit is characterized by the serious situation in our vicinity.” Niinisto added that “our security policy line has long been similar and even now, when the situation demands it, we take our steps together.”

First of all Donbas and Luhansk are Ukraine. Back in 2014 the entire Ukraine was fed up with the Yanukovych government because he was a Russian puppet just like the one in Belarus is today. He had refused to sign a political association and free trade agreement with the European Union (EU) and instead chose closer ties to Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union.

In February of that same year, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) had overwhelmingly approved of finalizing the agreement with the EU but Russia had put pressure on them to reject it.

This sparked outrage among Ukrainians and led to the REVOLUTION OF DIGNITY which lasted for 5 days during which the then President Yanukovych was ousted from power and all government facilities in the country became occupied by protesting civilians.

President Yanukovych considered his overthrow to be an illegal coup, and did not recognize the interim government. Widespread protests, both for and against the revolution, occurred in eastern and southern Ukraine, where Yanukovych previously received strong support in the 2010 presidential election.

These protests escalated and Yanukovych asked Russia for help which resulted in a Russian military intervention.

Instead of Russia to help stop the protests, they came with their own agenda which was the illegal annexation of Crimea and the creation of the self-proclaimed breakaway states of Donetsk and Luhansk. This sparked the Donbas War.

The Donbas war was Ukraine trying to retake their territory which Russia illegally took away. So nothing like Ukrainian forces bombing the Russian speaking Donbas and Luhansk here.

Basically the entire Ukraine speaks Russian as well as Ukrainian so why are the Ukrainian forces not bombing the entire country?

When Ukraine was a part of Russia the language being spoken by everyone was Russian but when Ukraine broke away they got back to their roots and changed everything back to Ukrainian but did that stop Ukrainians from still speaking Russian? NO.

Statement by Denmark, Iceland and Norway on Finland and Sweden’s decisions to apply for NATO membership

We strongly welcome Finland and Sweden’s decisions to apply for NATO membership.

We note that the decisions by Finland and Sweden to apply for NATO membership are sovereign national decisions in line with Finland and Sweden’s right to choose their own security arrangements. Finland and Sweden have the right to pursue their accession process without any attempts of outside interference.

Finland and Sweden share the values and principles of our Alliance and will enhance our collective defence and strengthen Euro-Atlantic security.

We will do our utmost to ensure a swift accession process, as Finland and Sweden already live up to the relevant criteria for NATO membership. Their armed forces meet NATO standards and are interoperable with NATO forces. We have trained and exercised together for many years. We highly appreciate the significant contributions that Finland and Sweden have made to NATO missions and operations.

Finland and Sweden’s security is a matter of common concern to us all. Should Finland or Sweden be victim of aggression on their territory before obtaining NATO membership, we will assist Finland and Sweden by all means necessary.

We immediately initiate preparations in order to effectuate these security assurances. We will also further develop our defence cooperation with Finland and Sweden.

Norway, Denmark and Iceland stated on Monday they would provide assistance "by all means necessary" to their Nordic neighbours, Sweden and Finland, should either of the latter two countries face attacks on their territory before joining Nato.

The Danish Prime Minister’s office on Monday issued a joint statement on behalf of Denmark, Norway and Iceland.

“Finland and Sweden’s security is a matter of common concern to us all. Should Finland or Sweden be victim of aggression on their territory before obtaining Nato membership, we will assist Finland and Sweden by all means necessary,” the statement reads.

Earlier on Monday, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson announced her government’s decision to take Sweden into Nato, ending two centuries of military non-alignment.

Sweden and Finland have both expressed a desire to act in lockstep on Nato membership and submit their applications jointly.

“We strongly welcome Finland and Sweden’s decisions to apply for Nato membership,” the statement from Denmark, Norway and Iceland read.


“We note that the decisions by Finland and Sweden to apply for Nato membership are sovereign national decisions in line with Finland and Sweden’s right to choose their own security arrangements. Norwegian PM Jonas Gahr Støre said that “together with Denmark and Iceland, Norway stands ready to assist its Nordic neighbours by all means necessary should they be the victim of aggression on their territory before obtaining Nato membership.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told media on Monday afternoon that the government would forward a motion to parliament “as soon as possible” on the Swedish and Finnish applications to join Nato.

She added that Denmark is fully behind the applications to join the defence alliance.

“In our eyes, this brings an opportunity to strengthen Nordic partnerships, including on security and defence,” she said.

“We therefore want Denmark to do everything it can to make sure Finland and Sweden join Nato as soon as possible,” she said.
