They've already tried last week by equally trying to cross the Donetsk river. They were badly beaten back will the Ukrainian pontoon bridge destroyed. Until they're able to cross that natural barrier and threaten the supply line that runs from Belgorod through Izyum, I will not hold my breath. Keep in mind that there's a Russian force still in front of them in same Kharkiv Oblast AND across the border in Belgorod.

When the Ukrainians are able to carry out a proper mechanized counter-attack and actually push the Russians away from the Donbass region back to the border, then we'll talk. Until then no sensible person will consider Ukraine merely reoccupying areas already left by the Russians, who've carried out an orderly retreat to better defensible areas, a "successful counter-attack". That's unless you want to spin propaganda to make the Ukrainians and yourselves feel good.

I'm no military expert, but 'ever heard of a feign/distraction or tieing up an opponent's resource? Apart from that, if Kharkiv was strategically important, why won't the Russians push in more Battalion Tactical Groups (BTGs) to take the city of 2 million? Belgorod is just across the border after all. What you fail to understand is that:

(1)The objective is primarily the Donbass, not Kharkiv city.

(2)Invading/Trying to take over a large city, especially one of 2 MILLION, simply sucks up a whole lot of manpower and resource from the attacker to seize and hold as it as favours the defenders. A key example is Mariupol. The Russians can't afford that distraction, especially when they're effecting a number of pushes at the Donbass front.

(3) Believe it or not, the Russians have learnt lessons from the 1st phase of the war and are not eager to repeat past mistakes.

One thing that am sure of is that Russia might in the few coming days. Declare war on Ukraine. They way things are going. Ukraine is now well armed with heavy weapons of various types from different countries of NATO and allies.. even though Russia is far stronger, am guessing that Russia will call up millions of reserved soldiers to suppress Ukraine. And that's is where This war might become bloody..to the amusement of UK and US.

No war is ever easy. And Russia under estimated Ukraine, firstly, secondly they were fighting nice to avoid civilian casualties. Thirdly they didn't attack Ukraine with over whelming force. They are too nice to Russian and Ukrainian speaking people of Ukraine. Big fault. I have seen how Ukrainian and Russian speaking people of Ukraine are killing captured Russian people. While Russia soldiers are treating Ukrainian soldiers with respect and even treatment of wounds,. Feeding them etc. One thing I have learnt about this Ukrainian Russia conflicts is that, never underestimate another country especially if that country has become a hostile country by virtue of past misunderstanding or fracas. This is why United States, no matter how stupid they are will never invade Iran.

@ OP and the Team Slava Ukraine, before you celebrate, mbok I URGE YOU all to take a break and look at the battlefield map, especially at the Kharkiv front. Maybe then reality will hit in. A few things to note:

(1)The Ukrainians never launched any successful counter-attack that helped them recapture territories around Kharkiv. Contrary to what's being touted around, some Russians units actually ceded ground voluntarily in tactical withdrawals to more defensible positions. The areas left by the Russians are what's now reoccupied by the Ukrainians and spurned as "recaptured".

(2)To be fair , the Ukrainians have reached the Russian boundary, BUUUUUUUUT the area "recaptured" is basically a tiny sliver of territory compared to what's still being held by the Russians.

(3) In a considerable area around same Kharkiv, the Russians just repulsed a Ukrainian push about a day ago.

(4) The whole "push" around Kharkiv is frankly considered strategically unimportant. Frankly it ties up Ukrainian units, preventing them from reinforcing beleaguered units in the East Donbass front.
