Exactly, it's what I cry about here on this site most of the time. Nigeria needs to be industrialized, needs to pay more tax, needs to vote for saner leaders at all levels (my shouting for tax is to force people to really pay attention to leaders at all levels)...and so forth. People don't like that message, so I get abused. LOL.

Nigeria has to get off oil and get into industrial development. That would eventually get us to be more prosperous, and so forth.

Like now, see how subsidy removal has enabled us to go from being a net importer of fuels...not just petrol...to a net exporter of fuels..EVEN to the USA.

All in all, subsides are problematic. That's why in the really big economies, they do not use them for everyone, and why only five african countries have fuel subsides, the rest can't because they know they won't be able to afford it.

Some of your points are valid, but you missed the most important issue: you can't build something on nothing. Nigeria doesn't even have a functional constitution and you're talking about a functional country. That's putting logic on its head. Who for instance created these states sharing the country's revenue? What input do the people have in the running of the country? Why can't the country conduct simple elections, even one simple election since independence?

Why are the people not thinking for themselves?
Why is it easy for crooks and the military to hijack power at will?

The answers are in plan sight, but you guys are playing to the gallery.

Subsidy definitely isn't the problem. The problem is that you cannot force square pegs in round holes. Nigeria cannot industrialize nor vote the right people because the fundamental flaw the country is running on is a faulty constitution. The present structure was built with that constitution, so even if Ahmedinajad of Iran or Tony Blair of Britain become the president, the country will continue moving in circles.

The irony of it is that such intelligent, erudite and charismatic men won't even win your sham elections here. Why do you think a man like Aminu Kano would lose to Ahmadu Bello, or Awolowo and Peter Obi lose to the likes of Akintola and Tinubu respectively?

1. Indonesia can subsidise fuel because they have a diversifed economy, NIgeria has a monoeconomy (It's an Asian tiger after all).

2. And as seen in Iran, it is straining public finances even then..forcing them to borrow even more.

3. Which is leading them to a policy whereby if you are earning above a certain amout of income, you don't get to benefit from subsidized fuel.

(Try that in NIgeria under the old subsidy regime).

What you can't deal with is that you guys are too corrupt to even govern yourselves. Your problem in Nigeria is just one - corruption and cronyism. Why are you not industrialized and diversified like Iran and Indonesia? The answer is simple - you guys don't have the character required, especially the dungs you have as political leaders. Your problem isn't subsidy, but your inability to get anything, anything at all right. Thanks.

Berry good question.

First, Iran does a partial subsidy. Basically an Iranian can buy a certain amount of fuel that is subsidised and then anything above that is paid for at market price.

Second, sanctions was a blessing for Iran. It enabled it to finally develop an indigenous manufacturing base which means they can now build a refinery from scratch with locally made products. That makes reducing operating costs easier

Even then Iran has a massive debt. Before the whole Israel and Trump mess, the government has been tentatively thinking of removing subsidies totally, but fear of massive riots and potential revolution has stopped them from doing so. Part of the reason of the debt is the same subsidy

An Libya that even is in tatters? And yet Nigeria has leaders stealing the country dry and yet can't sustain subsidy?

But let;s be honest, subsidy should have gone in 1993, and tinubu was wrong to oppose its removal in 2012.

There is no way any government can cover for fluctuations in production costs of petrol, diesel and others, without going into debt, and without the government having to tax the nation very heavily.

How was Iran under sanction and other countries subsidizing the cost of fuel doing it, debar that you guys REFUSE to acknowledge that your problem is corruption?

I said in an earlier post that they would soon run out of excuses to defend the brazen acts of idolatry going on in the Catholic church, so not surprising seeing some of their most vocal leaders in these parts of the world admitting it for the first time.

One also went ahead to post the image above alongside his write-up, to illustrate that there's no difference between what a native doctor/babalawo was doing with a skull to that of the Catholic Bishop.

This is still not enough though, but hopefully is good step in the right direction, that would eventually lead to the point where they'd begin say a categorical no to any form of idolatry going on in the Catholic church, not just this one.

Just like how Nigeria's public debt jumped from ₦12.6 trillion for 55 years after independence to ₦159.35 trillion in 11 years of APC led FG. Even after the removal of subsidy, floating of the naira, increasing customs duty, increasing electricity tariff, increasing VAT, PBAT alone added over ₦71T to Nigeria's debt in just 33 months with almost nothing to show for it.
