A young university student who ate only instant noodles for three weeks straight in order to save money for Singles Day – China’s version of Black Friday – ended spending all of her savings on medical bills after her unusual diet made her sick.

Instant noodles are standard fare for many university students. They’re cheap, easy to cook and they fill your stomach, but they’re definitely not the most nutritious meal. One young woman recently learned the hard way that surviving on instant noodles alone is not the smartest thing you can do, even if it means saving some money in the short run.

Hong Jia first made news headlines in China at the start of November, when it was revealed that she had been eating only instant noodles since October 15, in order to save a bit of money for Singles Day, the largest online and offline shopping day in the world. In a viral Pear video, Jia said that she had managed to save 749 yuan ($108) by switching to the ultra cheap diet, money that she planned to spend on the November 11 shopping extravaganza.



Sadly, Hong Jia never got to buy all the discounted items she had her eyes on, as she spent Singles Day in the hospital. Chinese media recently reported that the university student who had stunned the internet with her frugality got sick right before the popular holiday, and ended up spending all the money she had saved on IV drips and medicine.

“I used most of my savings to get better,” Hong Jia told reporters. “The IV drips cost me more than 1,000 yuan ($144) and medicine cost more than 100 yuan.”

Although she didn’t go into details about her health problems, the young woman said that she experienced high fever which required hospitalization. Although the exact cause of the illness is unclear, Jia added that “eating only instant noodles could be a reason”.

Chinese social media users commented that Hong Jia’s money-saving diet was bound to backfire, and even her own mother showed little sympathy for her.

In a screengrabbed WeChat conversation, the woman wrote “Even I watched that viral video. You deserve it. Just drink more hot water.”

I prefer to waste my money than waste my emotions on someone. Wasted emotions is a sin I find hard to forgive.

A medical practitioner, Elizabeth Olatunji, on Thursday, narrated to the Lagos State Special Offences Court how a 51-year-old electrician, Folorunsho Oluwaseun, sexually assaulted his 17-year-old daughter for over six years.

Oluwaseun is standing trial before Justice Sybil Nwaka on charges of defilement and sexual assault.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Oluwaseun allegedly committed the offence at his No. 40 Popoola Street, Offin residence in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

While being led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, B. T. Boye, the doctor, who works at the Department of Family Medicine, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, said the forensic examination conducted on the victim indicated a long and repeated penile penetration, which lasted for six years.

Olatunji, who also works at the Mirabel Centre, where rape victims in the state are referred to, noted that the medical examination showed that the victim sustained an injury to her private parts, adding that the defendant also assaulted the victim’s sister.

She said, “The main finding was on the hymen. There was a transition on the hymen. The victim told me that she was angry. She said her father was not only sexually assaulting her; he was also assaulting her younger sister. She said her father began to sleep with her not long after her mother left them.

“The girl also said that when the matter persisted, she reported to her grandmother but the grandmother ignored her and only said that there was no cause for alarm as long as her father did not get them pregnant.”

During cross-examination by the defence counsel, Worer Obuagbaka, Olatunji insisted that the victim told her that it was her father who assaulted her, adding that the medical test conducted showed that there was penile penetration, which caused injuries to the victim’s hymen.

Obuagbaka, however, urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him prepare his client and present his witnesses.

Justice Nwaka adjourned the case till December 18, 2018, for the continuation of trial.

A 7-year old girl has exposed her 46-year old neighbour, Taiwo Ajayi, who had engaged her in sex romp severally after she told his wife that her husband had been sleeping with her.

The little girl told her parents and the man’s wife that her husband had slept with her severally and that she had lost count of the number of times he raped her when his wife was not around.

The incident happened at Ikotun area of Lagos where the suspect, Ajayi, resides with the victim’s parents.

She also revealed that after engaging her in the sex romps, he warned her not to tell anybody about what happened before her parents discovered that he had lost her virginity.
Following the revelation the suspect, Taiwo Ajayi, was arrested and detained by the police at Ikotun Division for interrogation.

P.M.EXPRESS scooped that during interrogation, the suspect denied until the 7-year old victim was brought before him at the police station and she narrated the particular periods he usually came back and raped her when her parents were not around.
The police found Ajayi culpable and charged him before the Ogba Magistrates court for defilement.
The prosecutor, Mr. Christopher John, told the court that it was a case of defilement and hence needed DPP advice.
Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mr. Peter Nwaka, denied him bail and did not take his plea.
The court also ordered him to be remanded in prison custody and directed the prosecutor to send his file to DPP for advice.

It was gathered that Ajayi’s offence was felony; if the DPP finds him culpable and he is found guilty, he may be jailed up to 15 years in prison.
The matter was adjourned till 30th November, 2018, for report of DPP to be ready and the matter may be transferred to the High Court over jurisdiction.
