2027: Ekwunife Rallies Anambra Central APC Stakeholders, Urges Top-to-Bottom Victory

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, Senator Dr. Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), has charged party stakeholders to work assiduously to deliver the party at all levels in the forthcoming polls.

Senator Ekwunife made the call on Saturday, 19th September, 2026, while convening the APC Anambra Central Stakeholders Meeting held at the Senator Uche Ekwunife Events Centre, Awka.

According to her, the APC has the structure and formidable personalities required to secure victory from the Presidency to the National and State Assemblies.

"Winning elections is not rocket science. It is achievable through dedication, hard work, prayers and mobilization across all frontiers," Ekwunife said.

The former federal lawmaker assured that if elected to represent Anambra Central in 2027, her constituents would enjoy servant leadership and vibrant representation as witnessed during her stints in both the Green and Red Chambers.

She urged party faithful to adopt a top-to-bottom approach by voting for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all other candidates flying the party's flag.

In his remarks, the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Barr. Dr. Ben Nwoye, eulogized Senator Ekwunife for her leadership acumen and commitment to the ideals of the party. He described Anambra as a special case for the APC, noting that the party parades credible leaders with the capacity to represent the state effectively.

On her part, the APC Zonal Women Leader, Dr. Oby Achi Akan, described Ekwunife's candidacy as a blessing to the zone and called on stakeholders to unite and work collectively to deliver the party.

Also speaking, the APC candidate for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Barr. Kingsley Ezekwelu, commended Senator Ekwunife for convening the meeting and charged party faithful to unite to ensure victory for all APC candidates in the 2027 polls. Ezekwelu assured his constituents of effective representation and dividends of democracy if elected.

Re-echoing the views of other stakeholders, the APC candidate for Anaocha/Dunukofia/Njikoka Federal Constituency, Amb. Elijah Onyeagba, said the 2027 general elections present an opportunity for the party in the state to prove its strong presence. The former Nigerian Ambassador to Burundi charged party officials to ensure they deliver the party at their various wards and polling units.

Other stakeholders who spoke at the meeting included the Deputy National Organizing Secretary, Barr. Emeka Okafor; Prince Dr. Emeka Eze, among others.

Anambra Male Volleyball Team Qualify for National Sports Festival

Team Anambra male volleyball side secured qualification for the National Sports Festival on Monday, 14th September, 2026, after defeating hosts Team Imo 2-0 (25-22, 25-20) at the volleyball court of the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, Imo State.

Anambra had earlier edged Team Abia 3-2 (25-18, 25-22, 24-26, 20-25, 15-13) in a thrilling encounter on Sunday.

The team will now return home in bullish mood as they intensify preparations for the Games proper scheduled for November, 2026.

NSF Zonal Eliminations: Anambra Male Football Team Edge Abia, Volleyball Side Win Thriller

Team Anambra male football side defeated Team Abia 1-0 on Sunday, 13th September, 2026, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium practice pitch in Owerri.

Chilobe Emmanuel scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute to give Anambra a deserved victory after a dominant display that saw them miss a host of chances in the first half and hit the woodwork three times.

Anambra will face hosts Imo State in their next match on Monday, needing just a draw to qualify for the male football event of the National Sports Festival.

Similarly, the male volleyball team boosted their qualification hopes with a thrilling 3-2 win over Team Abia. Anambra won the first two sets 25-18, 25-22, before Abia fought back to take the next two 26-24, 25-20, forcing a decider which Anambra clinched 15-13.

They will also square up against Imo State, with a victory needed to secure qualification for the National Sports Festival.

99-Member Team Anambra Arrive Owerri for NSF Zonal Eliminations

Team Anambra contingent has arrived Owerri, Imo State capital, for the South-East Zonal Eliminations of the National Sports Festival (NSF).

The 99-man contingent comprises 72 athletes and 27 officials for the three-day event scheduled to hold from Saturday, 12th September to Monday, 14th September, 2026.

Anambra will compete in five team events, namely football (male), volleyball (male), beach volleyball (male and female), cricket (male) and basketball (male and female).

Addressing the contingent before their departure from Awka on Saturday, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, charged them to remain focused on the task of qualifying for all enlisted events.

Agha Mba also commended the State Government under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo for providing an enabling environment and support for sports to thrive in the state.

Ifitedunu PG, Prof. Ufoaroh Decorated as Patron by Nigerian Forest Security Service

The Anambra State Command of the Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has conferred its Patronship Award on the President-General of Ifitedunu community in Dunukofia Local Government Area, Prof. Stephen Uchenna Ufoaroh, in recognition of his immense contributions to security and environmental safety.

The honour was bestowed on Friday, September 11, 2026, during an engagement ceremony organised by the NFSS State Command in Ifitedunu, which also featured a reception for the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Administration at the NFSS National Headquarters, DCG Okonkwo Lawrence.

Presenting the award on behalf of the State Commander, Mazi Destiny E. Jonas, DCG Okonkwo Lawrence said Prof. Ufoaroh was recognised for his unwavering support to the NFSS Anambra Command and his dedication to maintaining a secure and peaceful environment for residents.

According to the Command, the award was also in acknowledgement of his purposeful leadership and fatherly guidance to the Service, especially in facilitating its establishment and operational stability in Dunukofia Local Government Area.

A key moment of the ceremony was the formal commissioning of the NFSS operational office in Dunukofia, a facility donated by Prof. Ufoaroh as President-General of Ifitedunu to accommodate the Service in the area.

In his response, Prof. Ufoaroh thanked the leadership of the NFSS Anambra State Command for the recognition, noting that the honour would further inspire his commitment to peace, security and community development. He expressed gratitude for being considered worthy and assured the Service of his sustained partnership and support for programmes aimed at strengthening security, safeguarding the environment and enhancing the safety and welfare of Ndi Ifitedunu, Dunukofia and Anambra State at large.

Ezenwoke, Okafor, Amata Emerge Champions at 2nd Umudioka-Awka Open Table Tennis Championship

The trio of Ezenwoke Ifechidere Greg-Michael, Sochima Okafor and Ruth Amata have emerged champions in the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18 categories respectively at the second edition of the Umudioka-Awka Open Table Tennis Competition.

The competition, which served off on Monday, 7th September, 2026, climaxed with a colourful closing ceremony held at the Ndi Ichie Hall, Umudioka Village, Awka.

In the U-13 category, Greg-Michael defeated Akachukwu Ezigbo to claim gold, with Ezigbo settling for silver. Uchenna Ifeanyi and Odinaka Okafor won bronze medals.

In the U-15 category, defending champion Sochima Okafor retained his title with a convincing win over Desmond Ugochukwu, who took silver. Victor Raphael and Mohammed Bello claimed bronze.

In the U-18 category, Ruth Amata defeated Ifeanyi Nwosu to clinch gold, while Mezie Eze and Emmanuel Nwosu settled for bronze.

The gold medalists received trophies, while all participants were presented with table tennis training kits, educational materials, medals and certificates of participation.

Reacting after the event, the facilitator, Chief Anayo Obiakor, commended the teenagers for their impressive performances.

Obiakor assured that the competition has come to stay and will be improved upon in subsequent editions.

Anambra Male Basketball, Volleyball Teams Qualify for National Intermediate Games Despite Final Losses

Team Anambra male basketball and volleyball sides have qualified for the National Intermediate Games despite losing their respective finals at the South-East Zonal Eliminations.

In a frenetic basketball finale, the regulation four quarters of 10 minutes each ended 24-24, forcing five minutes of overtime. Hosts, Team Imo, edged Anambra 29-27 at the end of the extra period.

In the volleyball final, Imo also pipped Anambra 2-1 in a thrilling contest. Anambra won the first set 25-11, Imo levelled with a 25-11 win in the second set, before clinching the decider 15-13.

Despite the defeats, both Anambra teams secured qualification for the U-19 National Intermediate Games scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

Anambra Female Basketball Team Clinch National Intermediate Games Ticket After 10-9 Win Over Abia

Team Anambra female basketball team has qualified for the National Intermediate Games after edging Abia State 10-9 in a tense encounter at the ongoing South-East Zonal Eliminations.

The match, played on Saturday, 12th September, 2026, at the Basketball Court of the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, Imo State, was decided in four quarters of 10 minutes each.

The Anambra teenagers finished second in their group behind hosts Imo State, who had earlier defeated both Anambra and Abia to top the group.

The victory qualifies Anambra for the main National Intermediate Games and is expected to spur the team to intensify preparations for the national finals.

Team Anambra male volleyball team defeated their Abia State counterparts 2-0 on Saturday morning at the ongoing South-East Zonal Eliminations for the National Intermediate Games.

The match, played at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, was decided in straight sets. The Anambra teenagers won 25-21 in the first set and dominated the second set 25-14 to seal victory in the best-of-three encounter.

Anambra will next face hosts, Team Imo, before wrapping up their campaign against Team Enugu.

A win in their next match will secure qualification for Team Anambra in the male volleyball event of the upcoming National Intermediate Games scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

Veteran Journalist, Chigozie Chukwuleta Bags NUJ Anambra Long Service Award

Veteran Journalist, Chigozie Chukwuleta, has been honoured with the 2026 NUJ Anambra Long-Term Professional Service Award in recognition of her over three decades of dedicated service to journalism.

Chukwuleta received the award during the 35th Anniversary celebration of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, held on Thursday, 10th September, 2026, at the Annabel Event Centre, Awka.

A journalist with a strong bias for sports reporting, Chukwuleta has spent more than 30 years in the profession, building a remarkable career in sports coverage while contributing immensely to the growth of journalism in Anambra State and beyond.

Describing the honour as significant, Chukwuleta said the award is a testament to years of dedication and passion for the pen profession.

She expressed appreciation to her family, the leadership of the NUJ Anambra State Council, her colleagues at UNIZIK 94.1 FM, members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), friends and well-wishers for their support throughout her career.

Chukwuleta attributed the milestone to God’s grace, saying: “It can only be God.”

The award adds to a versatile career that has spanned business, entertainment, politics, lifestyle and education reporting, and underscores the enduring contributions of experienced journalists to the Nigerian media landscape.

Chukwuleta is the current Deputy Station Manager of UNIZIK 94.1 FM, a position she has held since 2013. In that capacity, she has provided quality editorial and operational oversight for the university radio station and mentored over 20 young reporters who are now excelling in media organisations across Nigeria and beyond.

In sports journalism, she has represented Nigeria and SWAN in major assignments at home and abroad. She has served as Vice-President of SWAN (South-East), National Financial Secretary and National Treasurer of SWAN.

She has covered major international sporting events including the African Youth Championship, the All Africa Games and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

As a female sports writer, she also participated in the FIFA/AIPS training programme for female sports writers in Africa held in Senegal in 2011.

Team Anambra U-19 male football side defeated Team Enugu U-19 side 1-0 on Friday, 11th September, 2026, in the football event of the ongoing South-East Zonal Eliminations for the National Intermediate Games.

The match was played at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, Imo State.

Emmanuel Sunday converted from the spot in the 88th minute to seal a deserved victory for the Anambra teenagers, who created a plethora of chances throughout the encounter.

Anambra will next face Team Abia, who defeated hosts Team Imo 1-0 in an earlier cracker played on the same day.

Team Anambra Arrives Owerri for South-East Zonal Eliminations of Maiden National Intermediate Games

Team Anambra has arrived in Owerri, the Imo State capital, to participate in the South-East Zonal Eliminations for the maiden edition of the National Intermediate Games.

The 132-member contingent made up of 102 athletes and 30 officials is being led by Mr. Emeka Obidimma, Director of Sports at the Anambra State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.

Anambra will compete in six team events comprising of Football (Male and Female), Basketball (Male and Female), Handball (Male), Volleyball (Male), Cricket (Female) and Beach Volleyball (Male and Female).

Speaking to the contingent before their departure, the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, charged the athletes and officials to give a good account of themselves and ensure Anambra finishes top in their events, which is key to qualifying for the National Intermediate Games.

He urged them to remain dedicated, focused and disciplined in order to excel at the zonal eliminations.

The South-East Zonal Eliminations will hold from Thursday, 10th to Sunday, 13th September, 2026, with most events taking place at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, Imo State.

Umudioka-Awka Open Table Tennis Competition 2nd Edition Kicks Off With Over 20 Young Players

The second edition of the Umudioka Open Table Tennis Competition got underway on Monday, 7th September, 2026, at the Ndi-Ichie Hall, Umudioka Village, Awka, Anambra State.

The week-long championship, which will run until Saturday, 12th September, features over 20 young players competing in Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18 categories while the competition will also feature Professional category.

The competition is sponsored by Chief Engr. Anene Ebeze with support from Stabod Global Links; Platinum World Creation Ltd; Onyeka Investment Ltd; Dr. Tochukwu Ejikeme, Medical Director, King David’s Specialist Hospital, Awka; Chief Okey Igbokwe, popularly known as ‘Aka Jehova Awka’ and Chief Barr. Harris Eze, CEO of Awka Museum.

Winners in the Under-13, Under-15, and Under-18 categories will receive table tennis training kits including bats and balls, educational materials, medals and certificates.

In the Professional category, the winner will go home with a trophy, gold medal, and a cash prize of N50,000. The first and second runners-up will receive N30,000 and N10,000 respectively.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the Facilitator of the competition, Chief Anayo Obiakor, popularly known as ‘Opia’, said the tournament is an improved version of last year’s edition.

He explained that the competition, held annually during the summer break, is aimed at keeping youths engaged and also serves as a platform for grassroots talent discovery.

“The competition was initiated by myself and Chief Engr. Ebeze to keep our young ones busy during holidays and to discover talents who can represent Anambra State and Nigeria in future competitions,” Obiakor stated.

Chief Obiakor urged the participants to take the tournament seriously, noting that it could be a pathway to professionalism. He also appreciated all corporate bodies and individuals supporting the initiative.

Also speaking, the Anambra State Table Tennis Coach, Ogonna Ibeh, commended the organizers for promoting the sport at the grassroots level.

Coach Ibeh said the championship would provide exposure for young players and called for the provision of ITTF-standard tables to further improve the performance of athletes.

The preliminary rounds are ongoing, with outstanding players expected to advance to the finals on Saturday.

Prof. Orogbu Delivers 12 Classroom Projects Across Awka North and South, Says Education is Foundation of Progress

The member representing Awka North and Awka South Federal Constituency, Prof. Oby Lilian Orogbu, has delivered 12 education intervention projects across her constituency in what she described as a commitment to improving learning conditions and investing in human capital development.

The projects include the construction, renovation, rehabilitation and furnishing of classroom blocks in 11 schools, with a 12th project, a full administrative and learning facility, currently ongoing at Union Secondary School, Amawbia.

Announcing the interventions during a press briefing with journalists in Awka on friday, Hon. Prof. Orogbu who is fondly known as "Ada Di Ebube" said the projects align with the NDC’s vision and that of its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to make education the driver of national progress and prosperity.

Prof. Orogbu said: “Education is the foundation of progress and any society that want to achieve growth and development in all spheres of human endeavour must first embrace education. Education brought me where I am today coupled with hard work, dedication, being focused and disciplined.

"Today, our education intervention speak volumes. These classrooms are more than buildings. They represent hope, opportunity and empowerment for thousands of our children.

“When we give our children a conducive environment to learn, we are laying the foundation for a stronger Awka and a stronger Nigeria.” Prof. Orogbu said.

According to details released by her office, the interventions cut across both Awka North and Awka South LGAs comprising of Six new classroom blocks which were constructed at Community Secondary School, Achalla.

Classroom blocks were rehabilitated and furnished at Ezi-Awka Community Secondary School, Awka; Community Secondary School, Mgbakwu; Community Secondary School, Amanuke and Community Secondary School, Urum.

Other educational interventions are renovation and furnishing of classroom blocks which was carried out at Agulu Awka Primary School; Community Primary School, Ikwodiaku, Awka; Community Secondary School, Mbaukwu; Community Primary School, Okpuno; Ogulube Primary School, Ebenebe and Community Primary School, Ugbenu.

The 12th project at Union Secondary School, Amawbia is described as a comprehensive upgrade. It involves the reconstruction and furnishing of the administrative block, classrooms, a science laboratory, ICT centre with computers, a library, sick bay, as well as the installation of solar-powered electricity and a borehole.

Education stakeholders in the constituency have welcomed the interventions, noting that overcrowding and dilapidated infrastructure have long affected learning outcomes in many public schools.

Prof. Orogbu, a first-term federal lawmaker, said more projects in health, youth empowerment and infrastructure are being packaged to complement the education drive in Awka North and South.

Jumbo FC Clinch 2026 Pedro Uzoma U-17 Unity Cup Title With 2-0 Win Over Winners FC

Jumbo FC of Ogbaru have emerged champions of the 2026 Pedro Uzoma U-17 Unity Cup after defeating Winners FC of Nkpor-Uno 2-0 in the final played on Sunday, August 30th, 2026, at the Justice Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium, Onitsha.

Chimee Nwaanukaenyi was the hero for Jumbo FC, scoring in the 44th and 65th minutes to seal victory for the Ogbaru-based side.

For their efforts, Jumbo FC carted home the star prize of N70,000. Runners-up Winners FC received N50,000, while Michael FC, who defeated Elite FC in the third-place playoff, went home with N30,000.

In the individual awards, Uchechukwu Okezie of 12 Stars Team was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Chibuike Ochiogu of Michael FC won the Best Goalkeeper award, while Uche Anslem of Elite FC clinched the Highest Goal Scorer prize.

Speaking after the match, sponsor of the competition, Pedro Uzoma, represented by his brother, Chukwuemeka Uzoma, said the tournament was instituted to discover and nurture young football talents in Onitsha and its environs, and to provide them a platform to play competitive football.

He noted that the competition, an annual programme, has come to stay and is aimed at making positive impact in the lives of young people.

Chukwuemeka Uzoma added that Onitsha is blessed with amazing talents, and his brother, an ex-professional footballer, initiated the competition as part of his contribution to sports development.

Highlights of the final included a ceremonial kickoff performed by Chukwuemeka Uzoma and the presentation of trophy and cash prizes to the winners.

Hon. Orogbu Hails Anambra State Football League as Platform for Youth Empowerment

The second edition of the Anambra State Football League commenced on Sunday, August 30th, 2026, at the Awka City Stadium with a 0-0 draw between Peace FC of Awka and Ozalla FA of Obosi.

The competition, bankrolled by High Chief Jim Martins Nwabueze, Akubudike Na Umudioka, Founder of Akubudike Energy Ltd and Ichie Akubudike Foundation, is aimed at strengthening football development and promoting professional club in the state.

Speaking at the official kick-off, High Chief Nwabueze, represented by his Secretary, Chief Sunny Anene, said the league is designed to promote sports growth in Anambra through football and to establish a functional professional football league system in the state.

He assured that the state football league has come to stay and will grow bigger, while urging participating teams to give their best and abide by the rules of the game.

Chakapain Anambra All Stars: Peace FC Stun Defending Champions Fegge To Book Quarterfinal Spot

Peace FC All Stars of Awka have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Chakapain Anambra State All Stars Competition after defeating defending champions Fegge All Stars 1-0.

The match was played on Sunday, 30th August 2026 at the Awka City Stadium.

The administrative capital-based club secured the upset victory through a late strike by Nnamdi Collins Obi in the 86th minute, sending the reigning champions out of the competition.

The result now positions Peace FC as one of the favourites to annex the giant trophy and the star prize at stake.

Reacting after the match, Chairman of Peace FC, Mr. Ifunanya Nwangwu, described the game as a tough contest. He commended his players for their spirited display and resilience that ensured progression to the last eight.

"We will not be carried away by this feat. Our focus now is to take each game as it comes with the ultimate target of reaching the finals and eventually winning the trophy," Nwangwu stated.

Also speaking, Team Manager of the club, Evangelist Obi Moneke, thanked God for the victory. He described the win as a product of teamwork, dedication and resolute performance by his charges to progress deep into the competition.

Evang. Moneke affirmed that the club’s prime target remains sealing a place in the grand finale and bringing the cup home to Awka.

AnSFA Chairman, Iloenyosi Bags Football Excellence Award

The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (AnSFA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, has been honoured with the Football Leadership Excellence Award by STYB Club in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the growth of Nigerian football.

The award was presented to the ANSFA boss, popularly known as "De General," for his dedication to football development and his leadership in repositioning the game in Anambra State and beyond.

In his acceptance speech, Iloenyosi dedicated the honour to the Executive Governor of Anambra State, H.E. Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Patrick Agha Mba and the people of Anambra State.

He pledged to continue promoting sports excellence through football and called on Ndi Anambra to rally round the Soludo administration for the growth and development of football in the state.

Captain (Rtd) Barrister Casmir Nwafor, Chairman of Orumba North Local Government Area, has described alumni as the engine room of any great institution, stressing that their active participation is critical to sustaining excellence and global relevance.

Hon. Nwafor stated this on Friday, 28th August 2026, during the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association (NAUAA) Converge 2.0 held at the Alumni Building Complex, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Awka.

Speaking at the event themed, "Uniting UNIZIK Alumni for Impact, Legacy and Global Excellence," the legal practitioner, retired military officer and Council Chairman said alumni serve as ambassadors, partners in development, and custodians of an institution’s values.

"The strength of any university is measured not just by what happens within its walls, but by what her graduates do out there. Alumni must move from spectatorship to participation.

We are the ones to raise the banner of UNIZIK high through mentorship, funding, networking, and advocacy," Hon. Nwafor stated.

The Chairman of Orumba North LGA commended NAUAA for organizing the converge, noting that such platforms provide opportunities for graduates to pool resources, ideas and expertise for the advancement of the university.

Captain Nwafor also lauded the UNIZIK Management under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Stanley Anyaehie, for sustaining the academic standard and infrastructure drive of the institution.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association (NAUAA) on Friday, 28th August 2026, held its second alumni converge tagged "NAUAA Converge 2.0" at the Alumni Building Complex, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka.

The colourful event, themed "Uniting UNIZIK Alumni for Impact, Legacy and Global Excellence," brought together graduates, stakeholders and friends of the university to deliberate on ways to advance the institution.

Declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Ugochukwu Stanley Anyaehie, said alumni play a critical role in the development of any institution. Represented by Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu, the VC noted that top universities across the globe attained their milestones through alumni contributions in infrastructure and academics. He commended the Global President of NAUAA, Prof. Ikechukwu Innocent Umeh and the Local Organizing Committee for their efforts in ensuring the success of the converge.

In his address, the Chairman of the occasion and CEO of Seahorse Lubricant Industry Ltd, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, said the theme was apt as it focused on discussions around contributing to the continued growth of the university. Though not a graduate of UNIZIK, Chief Onunkwo said he appreciates the values the institution represents — discipline, self-reliance and excellence.

The Anambra South Senatorial Candidate of the NDC and philanthropist congratulated alumni for making impact across the state and country. He added that sustaining the university’s development is the responsibility of students, alumni, and friends, and not management alone.

Chief Onunkwo announced a donation of N50 million towards the completion of the Alumni Centre project and urged other stakeholders to support the university in honour of the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, after whom the institution is named.

Delivering the Presidential Address, the Global President of NAUAA, Prof. Ikechukwu Innocent Umeh, said the converge was aimed at translating the alumni’s human and material resources into tangible results and legacy for future generations. He disclosed that the central objective of Converge 2.0 is the completion of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Centre building project.

Prof. Umeh appealed to alumni, branches, chapters, graduating sets, corporate organizations and friends of UNIZIK to donate generously toward the historic project.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Prof. Evaristus Efe Afiadigwe, said the converge was designed to bring graduates, friends and stakeholders together to interact and share the progress, prospects and challenges of the institution. He added that the development of any university revolves around its graduates who are driven to reposition it as a world-class institution.

In his keynote speech, Prof. Ozonnia Ojielo stated that the strength of any institution lies in alumni who choose participation over spectatorship. He said alumni converges create opportunities for collaboration and mobilize expertise, networks and resources for institutional development.

One of the awardees, Chief Emeka Chukwumalu while responding on the importance of the converge, described the day as special for the academic products of the University, he charged alumni of the institution to ensure that they are part of the process in uplifting the image of the institution while also pledged to support in ensuring that the Alumni complex is completed in record time.

UNIZIK Inaugurates 33rd SUG Executives, VC Pledges Student-First Administration

The newly elected 33rd Executive Council of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka for the 2026/2027 academic session was on Tuesday, 25th August, 2026, officially inaugurated and handed over the mantle of leadership.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Conference Room of the Student Affairs Unit, had in attendance the new SUG EXCO, members of the immediate past EXCO, and members of the University’s teaching staff.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, congratulated the new executives on their victory and assured them of his administration’s commitment to making their tenure impactful.

The VC reiterated that his administration operates a “student-first policy,” noting that without students, the institution would not exist.

Prof. Anyaehie disclosed that the University currently has over 50,000 students and is poised to admit more following an impending resource verification exercise for 8 new academic programmes. He highlighted key efforts by his administration, including the construction of more hostels and the upgrade of infrastructure across campuses.

Prof. Anyaehie further emphasized that the University maintains zero tolerance for sexual harassment, extortion, and other vices, stressing that any reported case would be handled swiftly and decisively.

“Nnamdi Azikiwe University is named after a great man. Therefore, this University must reflect greatness in character and conduct,” the VC stated.

In his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji, assured that reforms would be introduced in the allocation of funds to student leadership bodies at departmental and faculty levels.

Prof. Ubaoji also announced that from the next academic session, course representative elections would be conducted to deepen leadership training and practice the ideals of student unionism.

Responding to the VC’s remarks, the Sub-Dean I of Student Affairs, Dr. Anthony Apiti, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for gracing the occasion. He noted that the new EXCO had pledged to be law-abiding.

Dr. Apiti described the current VC as a dynamic leader and the Dean of Student Affairs as energetic and grounded. He urged the new executives to leverage the ingenuity of the present administration and to lead with courage, humility, and accountability.

The Sub-Dean I reminded them that they would be managing students’ funds and should prioritize student welfare in all decisions. He also urged them to reside in University hostels as stipulated in their undertaking and to consult the Student Affairs Unit regularly for guidance.

In a lecture titled, “The Dynamics of Leadership: Interfacing SUG Demands with University Management,” the Director of the Pre-Degree Programme, Engr. Prof. Paul Okolie, said leadership is about service, strategy, and sacrifice, not just titles.

Prof. Okolie stressed that the success of the 33rd EXCO over the next 12 months would depend on how well they bridge the gap between students and University management. He charged them to lead with courage, wisdom, and integrity, and to work toward leaving the institution better for future students.

Also speaking, the Chairperson of ASUU, UNIZIK Branch, Comrade Innocent Nnubia, in a lecture on “Unionism and Welfare,” said unionism is about positive change and not noise-making.

Comrade Nnubia noted that the core of unionism is welfare, which includes affordable education, adequate lecture halls, and conducive learning environments.
“Unionism is not about victimization but service. Leadership is not a position, but the responsibility and impact you make,” he said. He urged the new leaders to be attentive to students’ concerns and to make student welfare the compass of their administration.

The immediate past SUG President, Comrade Izuchukwu Ejikeme, speaking on “Ethics and Privileges of the SUG,” said immunity granted to student leaders is temporal, but character endures.

He cautioned that the SUG is not a social club or a platform for settling personal scores, but an office of dignity, discipline, and service. He urged the new EXCO to maintain a cordial working relationship with University management.

Also, the immediate past SUG President, Comrade Chukwusom Samuel Ochuba, pledged his support and mentorship to the new executive, expressing optimism that the 33rd SUG would outperform the 32nd.

In his concluding remarks, the Sub-Dean II of Student Affairs, Dr. Segun Adeniyi, congratulated the new executives and assured them of the Unit’s readiness to collaborate for the success of their administration.

In his vote of thanks, the newly inaugurated SUG President, Comrade Chukwueloka Winston Nnake, appreciated students for their trust. He promised to provide servant leadership and to leave the Union better than he met it.

Also present during the inauguration is the Union Electoral Committee (UNECO) Secretary, Dr. Kitizo Okoli.

Anambra Govt Endorses Iloenyosi's Bid for South-East NFF Executive Position

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has formally endorsed the candidacy of Anambra Football Association (ANSFA) Chairman, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, for the South-East seat on the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Executive Committee.

Soludo announced the endorsement on Tuesday in Awka during a meeting with Iloenyosi, saying the state government was throwing its full weight behind the former Super Eagles defender.

The Governor described Iloenyosi as the right candidate to protect and promote the interests of the South-East at the highest level of football administration in Nigeria.

“I have complete trust in Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi’s capacity to deliver. He has shown commitment, competence and genuine passion for football development in Anambra State. We are proud of his record and we will give him our full backing,” Soludo said.

The Governor stressed that the zone requires stronger representation within the NFF to ensure its talents and structures receive adequate attention.

“The South-East needs a clear, effective voice at the NFF. Iloenyosi understands the game, he understands our people, and I am confident he will provide the leadership our region deserves,” he stated.

Highlighting Iloenyosi’s credentials, Soludo noted that the candidate brings a rare combination of playing experience at the highest level and grassroots administrative experience.

“He is not new to football. He has played at the highest level and has managed the game at state level. That blend equips him to make meaningful contributions to the NFF,” the governor added.

Popularly known as “D’General”, Iloenyosi declared his intention to contest for the South-East seat earlier this year. His campaign is built on three pillars: stronger regional representation, grassroots football development, and expanded opportunities for players, clubs and administrators across the zone.

Iloenyosi was recently returned unopposed as Chairman of the Anambra FA, a development the governor cited as further proof of his acceptance within the football community.

Soludo said the endorsement goes beyond supporting an individual, but is about advancing the collective interest of Anambra and the wider South-East region.

“This is about Anambra and the wider South-East. It is about ensuring our talents, clubs and grassroots structures get the attention they deserve. I encourage Iloenyosi to go forward boldly. He has our support, our prayers and our confidence,” he said.

The Governor further assured the candidate of institutional backing throughout the election process.

“As a government, we will always support our sons and daughters pursuing legitimate ambitions that advance our people. On this journey, Chief Iloenyosi has the full support of the Anambra State Government. He is not walking this road alone,” Soludo declared.

The Governor’s endorsement is expected to provide significant political and institutional momentum to Iloenyosi’s campaign ahead of the forthcoming NFF elections.

No Scholar Left Hungry Committee, Student Affairs Unit, UNIZIK Feeds Over 5000 Hostel Students During Exams


Sub-Dean Lead Initiative to Support Students in 6 University's Hostels

The Student Affairs Unit of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, (UNIZIK) Awka, on Saturday, 22nd August, 2026 carried out a special feeding programme for students residing in university hostels under its “No Scholar Left Hungry Committee.”

The initiative, conceived by the Sub-Dean of the Student Affairs Unit, Dr. Anthony Apiti, targeted over 5,000 students across both male and female hostels. The benefiting hostels are Stella Okoli, Dora Akunyili, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Basil Oli, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Oby Ezekwesili Hostels.

During separate visits to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and Oby Ezekwesili Hostels, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji, commended Dr. Apiti for the idea and the committee members for executing it, especially during the ongoing second semester examinations.

Prof. Ubaoji disclosed that the original plan was to organize a party for the students. He said the decision to provide meals instead came from “men and women who felt that students needed support to aid their academic activities at this critical period.”

The Students' Affairs Dean urged the students to remember the gesture and replicate it for future generations of UNIZIK students after graduation. He also wished them success in their examinations.

In his remarks, Dr. Anthony Apiti said the motive of the committee was to ensure that no student goes hungry while writing exams. The scholar noted that the committee was open to support and solicited more donations from well-meaning individuals to sustain the programme.

He also encouraged the beneficiaries to pay it forward when they graduate and excel in their careers.

Also speaking, a member of the committee, Dr. Anthonia Chigbo-Obasi, reiterated the Sub-Dean’s position and urged students to maintain good personal hygiene and keep their hostels clean.

Dr. Chigbo-Obasi added that the committee would also work to address other challenges facing hostel residents, including constant water supply, improved lighting, clearing of drainages, and provision of ceiling fans.

The highpoint of the event was prayers for the students led by Prof. Ubaoji, followed by the distribution of meals to students in the visited hostels.

Also present during the event were Mrs Perpetua Ilozue, Deputy Registrar (Zone A Hostels), Mrs Chinyere Ugboaja, Deputy Registrar (Zone B Hostels) and Comrade Chukwueloka Winston Nnake, President of the Students Union Government (SUG).

The “No Scholar Left Hungry Committee” said it will continue to monitor student welfare during the examination period.

Sliding Towers CEO Says Orumba North Project Will Make Anambra the Next Logistics and Industrial Powerhouse

The debate over the airport rising at Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State has been loud. According to Arc. Chukwudi Ezenwa, CEO of Sliding Towers and Lead Construction Consultant on the project, much of it has been “confident but uninformed.”

Speaking during a special interview on the Anambra Aerotropolis Export Free Trade Zone (EFTZ), Ezenwa said the state is not in the business of duplicating airports but in the business of building a world class city.

“Anambra is not building a second airport but building a logistics, commercial and industrial city for which the airport is simply the engine inside it,” Ezenwa stated.

*CLOSE PROXIMITY AIRPORTS CONFORMS TO AVIATION STANDARDS*
Responding to critics who cite proximity to existing Southeast airports, Ezenwa dismissed the argument as a distraction stating that Nigeria already runs Lagos, Ibadan, Benin, Enugu, Asaba, Owerri, Uyo, Calabar and more while Delta has Asaba and Warri with Kaduna having airports domiciled in its administrative capital and Zaria.

Ezenwa as informed that London has six international airports while South Africa has hundreds of aerodromes.

*THE AIRPORT IS ABOUT CARGO, NOT FLIGHT TIME*
Ezenwa faulted the “table of flight times” being circulated by critics, saying it answers a question nobody asked.

He revealed that the airport will not fly passengers from Enugu to Orumba North as this is a cargo-led international gateway where freighters from Guangzhou, Dubai, Frankfurt, Istanbul and Atlanta will land directly into the commercial nerve centre of the South East zone.

According to Sliding Towers feasibility study, Ezenwa disclosed that 12.5 million people live within 100km of the site across six states while cities such as Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka, Enugu, Owerri, Asaba and Aba are all within 20 minutes to 2 hours by road.

*VISION 2070: WHY THE LAND MUST BE SECURED NOW*
The core of the project, according to Ezenwa, is timing as Governor Soludo’s “Vision 2070” projects that the population of Anambra State will rise from 8.5 million to 38.5 million people.

“We are talking about 30 million more people on one of the smallest landmasses in Nigeria and that landmass is gradually reducing owing to ecological challenges such as erosion and flooding every year, therefore there is need to assemble the land before 2070,” Ezenwa stated.

*A 12,700-HECTARE CITY, NOT A TERMINAL*
Ezenwa disclosed that the Anambra Aerotropolis EFTZ is being laid out as a single planned entity already approved by the Nigeria Export Processing Zones. He informed that the master plan include the Aerodrome (Cargo-led international gateway), Anambra mixed-use Industrial City, Agro-Industrial Park, Pharmaceutical Hub and Logistics, Commercial, Residential, Leisure zone.

“Over 800km of roads are under construction. We are building warehouses, bonded storage and cold chain first. That is fundamental before we start capturing value in anticipation of the landing of the first aircraft,” Ezenwa said.

The youthful construction expert further disclosed that the plan is multimodal by design encapsulating rail links to Ekwulobia, Nnewi, Onitsha and Awka; road corridors to regional expressways and access to Onitsha River Port as well as the Second Niger Bridge replicating the model that made Memphis and Atlanta global logistics hubs.

*THE CONVERSATION ON EXECUTION AND INHERENT BENEFITS*
Ezenwa said the Aerotropolis could contribute between N350 billion and N600 billion annually to state GDP and create up to 750,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The Construction Expert cautioned that success depends on execution owing to critical factors such as power, governance and transparent land administration.

"What we are building at Orumba North is a settlement. A place where people will do business, manufacture, get jobs and raise families. The appropriate time to secure the future is now and under Governor Soludo, Anambra is doing exactly that.” Ezenwa said.

UNIZIK Don, Prof. Nwanegbo Advocates Good Governance as Nigeria's Pathway to Security

A Professor of Comparative Politics, Peace and Security Governance at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Chukwuemeka Innocent Jaja Nwanegbo, has said that good governance, not brute force alone, is the surest pathway to lasting peace and security in Nigeria.

Prof. Nwanegbo stated this on Thursday, 13th August, 2026, while delivering the 128th Inaugural Lecture of the university titled, "Beyond Guns: Good Governance as Nigeria's Pathway to Peace and Security", held at the ASUU NAU Secretariat, UNIZIK.

The scholar noted that from its origin, the literature of political science is replete with established positions on the role of politics and governance in maintaining peace and security, adding that politics remains the foundation for establishing societal order.

Prof. Nwanegbo defined politics as "the exercise of power and authority, the making of collective decisions, the allocation of scarce resources and the practice of persuasion through acceptable means within any polity.

On governance, Prof. Nwanegbo described it as a phenomenon that exists whenever a group of people come together to accomplish an end.

The University Don referenced the World Bank's three key aspects of governance: the form of political regime, the process by which authority is exercised in managing a country's economic and social resources, and the capacity of government to design, formulate, implement policies and discharge functions.

In contextualizing peace and security, the scholar explained that peace can be categorized into traditional and modern forms, with six definitional models. He added that a peaceful atmosphere enhances security, while violent conflict provides fertile ground for insecurity, making peace and security symbiotic.

According to him, interconnected academic, practical and policy frameworks explain how politics and governance serve as foundational pillars for peace, security and development. He identified the democratic peace theory, human security framework, institutional economics and inclusive institutions, and the developmental state theory as key theoretical frames connecting the concepts.

Prof. Nwanegbo also presented findings from his research on the root causes of governance failures that generate conflicts and insecurity in Nigeria, with emphasis on intergroup conflicts.

Prof. Nwanegbo proffered strategies for improving governance processes to contain conflicts and insecurity nationwide.

The scholar stressed that an academic is expected to perform three core responsibilities: teaching, research and community service, to be considered a complete scholar.

The professor concluded by advocating a 'whole-of-society' approach, which demands collaboration between government, religious leaders, traditional rulers and citizens to address the root causes of conflict.

"Silencing the guns and ending insecurity requires that Nigeria should be made a home for all Nigerians to willingly live in, not by coercion but by convenience. This can only happen when all constituent units are properly governed and provided with the basic services required for human existence," Prof. Nwanegbo stated.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, described inaugural lectures as central to university culture and a vital platform for professors to showcase research in their fields.

The Vice-Chancellor commended Prof. Nwanegbo for the depth of his presentation, as well as his outstanding academic achievements and contributions to the institution.

The highlight of the event was the conferment of the University’s Distinguished Professor Medal of Honour on the 128th Inaugural Lecturer by the Vice-Chancellor.

Amb. Udungwu made the statement on Sunday, August 9, 2026, following Fegge All Stars’ emphatic 4-1 victory over Coach Okada All Stars FC of Okpoko in their final group match.

He described the performance as a "class act" and a clear statement of intent.

Udungwu said: “The boys showed quality and focus today. It tells you we are serious about defending the trophy we won in the last edition.

“We are turbocharged, better prepared, and motivated to go all the way to the final.” Udungwu said.

The MD/CEO of Portsmouth Hotel and Suites Ltd, Onitsha, also assured the team of his continued support throughout the competition.

Fegge All Stars have now advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament for players aged 40 and above.

Osita Chikere led the scoring with a brace in the 25th and 35th minutes. Uche Anaelunwa added the third in the 52nd minute, while Chimaobi Emmanuel sealed the win in the 64th minute. Coach Okada pulled one back through Osita Ezennia in the 55th minute, but it proved to be only a consolation.

Awka Capital Elite All Stars delivered a commanding performance on Sunday, August 9, 2026, thrashing United All Stars of Obosi 3-0 in a round-robin match of the ongoing Chakapain Anambra State All Stars Games.

Ngozi Obiejesi opened the scoring in the 9th minute to give the Capital City side an early lead. Henry Ohamadike doubled the advantage two minutes later with a superb finish, before Henry Okeke wrapped up the victory in the 61st minute, capping off a well-worked team move.

Speaking after the match, team official Mr. Chijioke Nwajioha described the win as a statement performance.

“This is a resounding result that shows we have a team capable of going all the way to lift the trophy,” Nwajioha said.

“It was also important for us to bounce back from the disappointment of our last game. We are taking it one match at a time, and our focus now is to reach the final.”

He also commended the sponsors and organizers, noting that the competition provides a platform to unite communities through football.

Head Coach Sampson Onyeji, popularly known as ‘Suarez’, said the game was a must-win following their previous result.

Onyeji said: “The boys showed character and determination today.

“We will take the positives from this win and keep pushing to get to the peak of the competition. We are confident of annexing the trophy.” Onyeji said.

Awka Capital Elite will now turn their attention to their next fixture as the race for the knockout stage intensifies.

Prof. Orogbu Empowers Over 500 Constituents with Cars, Tricycles, Scholarships in Awka

The member representing Awka North and Awka South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Prof. Oby Lilian Orogbu, on Thursday, 6th August, 2026 empowered over 500 constituents with vehicles, business equipment, vocational tools and scholarships aimed at reducing poverty and promoting self-reliance.

The second phase of the empowerment programme, themed: “Empowering Communities, Building Futures,” was held in Awka and attracted beneficiaries, political leaders, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, religious leaders and party faithful from across the constituency.

Items distributed included cars, shuttle buses, tricycles, motorcycles, sewing machines, grinding machines, deep freezers and power generating sets. The support, according to the lawmaker, is targeted at transportation, small businesses, vocational enterprises and household income generation.

Scholarships were also awarded to deserving students as part of efforts to promote educational advancement in the constituency.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Orogbu said the programme was in appreciation of her supporters and constituents who stood by her during the 2023 general elections.

She noted that more than 36,000 people voted for her while over 5,000 supporters worked actively during the campaign, adding that it would be impossible to accommodate everyone in one phase.

The lawmaker urged those who did not benefit in the current phase to remain patient, assuring that another round of empowerment has been scheduled for November 2026.

Prof. Orogbu charged beneficiaries to make productive use of the items, stressing that the intervention was designed to improve livelihoods, create jobs and raise living standards across Awka North and Awka South.

The Special Guest of Honour and Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Mr. Peter Obi, CON, commended Prof. Orogbu, describing the gesture as purposeful and people-oriented representation.

Mr. Obi said leadership should be measured by visible impact on the lives of the people rather than empty promises, noting that initiatives that lift citizens out of poverty also help to reduce crime and insecurity.

He lamented rising unemployment, poor education, weak healthcare and growing insecurity, which he blamed on poor governance and mismanagement of public resources.

Also speaking, the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, Senator Victor Umeh, described Prof. Orogbu as “a rare gift” to Awka North and Awka South.

Senator Umeh said the lawmaker had distinguished herself through quality representation, constituency projects, scholarships, road infrastructure and empowerment programmes.

On his part, the Anambra State Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Ikem Uzoezie, congratulated Prof. Orogbu for fulfilling her campaign promises.

He urged constituents to continue supporting the party, expressing optimism that sustained support would attract more development and improve welfare.

The high point of the event was the presentation of empowerment items and scholarships amid excitement from beneficiaries, who described the intervention as life-changing.

From UNIZIK to the Nation: Prof. Chinwe Anunobi Repositions National Library for the Digital Age

A UNIZIK scholar, is rewriting the story of libraries in Nigeria.

Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, Professor of Library and Information Science and former Deputy University Librarian at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, is currently serving as the National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Library of Nigeria (NLN). Since her appointment in September 2021 and her recent reappointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a final five-year term, she has driven an aggressive 8-point reform agenda to transform the National Library into a technology-driven, people-centered institution.

With over 20 years of experience as a librarian, administrator and educator, Prof. Anunobi has taught and supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students across several universities. Her leadership is now taking the NLN from dusty shelves to digital frontiers.

Digitizing Nigeria’s Knowledge;
Under her watch from January 2022 to December 2024, the NLN achieved major milestones:
- National Repository of Nigeria (NRN): Over 6,000 weak materials were digitized. The NRN portal https://nigeriarepository.nln.ng/ now hosts over 1,500 digitized resources.
- Virtual Library Services: The Virtual Library dashboard http://www.virtualnln.gov.ng was launched with 23 open-access journals and 432 monographs. The NLN website was also revamped for better user experience.
- Automation: Library operations were automated with Koha Software. The OPAC now holds 69,812 volumes. She also automated ISBN application and verification, and launched platforms for indexing Nigerian Newspapers with 1,998 entries and a Newspaper/Magazine Locator covering 62 titles across 28 branches.

The NLN also subscribed to global databases including ProQuest, EBSCOhost, and Boldscolar, and strengthened its social media presence with over 23,600 followers on Facebook.

Taking Libraries to the People:
Prof. Anunobi’s agenda prioritized access for “hard-to-reach” communities. Between 2022 and 2024, the NLN recorded 162,861 registered users and 615,158 footfalls, with 356,734 resources consulted.
Her Annual Readership Promotion Campaign reached 104 communities across 36 states and the FCT, impacting 23,706 people. 102 literacy centers were also established in remote areas with textbooks, tablets, and reading materials.

In culture and heritage, she commissioned the documentation of Nigerian indigenous languages in Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and Pidgin, produced the "Nigerian Language Map," and inaugurated the Family History Committee in January 2025 to preserve Nigerian family histories.

Infrastructure and Professional Growth:
Branch libraries in Kwara, Niger, Sokoto and Calabar were renovated, with a prototype completed in Bayelsa State while Six more are under construction. Through the Gigabit Library Project, Starlink internet was provided to Lagos, Kaduna and Abuja branches.

She also re-engineered staff welfare and training leading to 333 staff being promoted, monthly fuel allowance was introduced and over 500 staff were trained between 2022 and 2024. The Centre for Advanced Library and Information Management (CALIM) secured a 5-year accreditation for its ND program and commenced classes in 2023.

Global Recognition:
Prof. Anunobi’s impact extends beyond Nigeria. She is second Vice-Chair of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL), Co-Chair of the UNESCO IDIL Global Task Force for 2026, and Chairperson of UNESCO’s Information for All Programme, IFAP, in Nigeria. She also serves as Lead Expert for Nigeria at the UNESCO Communication and Information Commission.

On June 17, 2026, she was elected into the Governing Board of the ISSN International Centre. The Director, Ms. Gaëlle Bequet, said: “Prof. Anunobi’s experience, expertise, and commitment will undoubtedly be valuable contributions to the Board's work.”

The Coalition of Young Nigerian Librarians described her reappointment as “well deserved and strategic,” noting that continuity will help consolidate projects like the National Repository, Newspaper Locator, and the new National Library Headquarters in Abuja.

A Fellow of the Nigerian Library Association and author of over 100 publications, Prof. Anunobi says her mission is simple: free and timely access to accurate information for all Nigerians.

From her roots as Deputy University Librarian at UNIZIK to leading Nigeria’s apex library, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi is proving that libraries are not relics of the past — they are the engine rooms for Nigeria’s knowledge future.

UNIZIK SUG Polls: Software Engineering Student, Comrade Nnake Elected President

Comrade Chukwueloka Winston Nnake, a 200-level student of Software Engineering, Faculty of Physical Sciences, has emerged President-elect of the Students' Union Government (SUG), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Comrade Nnake was declared winner after the virtual election held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, which recorded 18,745 votes out of 48,780 eligible voters.

The President-elect polled 8,101 votes to defeat eight other contestants. His closest challengers were Chinecherem Justus Arinze with 2,488 votes and Chukwudi Ezekiel Uduma with 2,282 votes. Others are Esther Adaeze Ekweozor, 1,342; Mmesomachukwu FearGod Ikegwuonu, 894; Blessing Chidinma Chukwu, 812; Kenechukwu Charles Etuodichukwu, 790; Alphonsus Ifeanyichukwu Onwubiko, 619; and Emmanuel Chibueze Dim, 138 votes.

For the Vice President position, Adaeze Angelica Obieze of the Department of History and International Studies won with 7,247 votes. She defeated Jennifer Chukwukamso Nnanwuba, 6,409 votes and Oghenevwogaga Peter Ikatu, 2,000 votes.

Announcing the results, the Secretary of the Union Electoral Committee (UNECO), Dr. Kizito Okoli said the exercise was seamless and transparent.

In his reaction, the UNECO Chairman and Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji, commended students for their orderly conduct and described the virtual voting system, now in its fifth year, as a success. The scholar also appreciated UNECO officials and student representatives for ensuring a credible process.

The election Situation Room was monitored by NANS members, UNECO officials drawn from staff and students across faculties, and agents of the contestants.
