......Congratulates Warri Wolves Chairman, Ambakederemo for the Success Story...... By Ikenna Nwokedi The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi has lauded the Nigeria National League (NNL) management under the leadership of Chief George Aluo for the success story recorded in the just concluded Super 8 competition. The Super 8 playoffs ended on Saturday, 12th July 2025 as Warri Wolves FC defeated Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi 3-2 to emerge champions of the 2024/25 NNL season as Barau FC, Kun Khalifat FC, Warri Wolves and Wikki Tourists gained promotion to the top tier, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Chief Iloenyosi lauded the NNL management for a smooth organization of the eight-day competition which was held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State. The ANSFA Chairman averred that the extension of Chief Aluo's tenure as NNL Supremo is justified judging by the success story of the Super 8 playoffs. The Anambra FA boss averred that there has been significant leap in the growth of the 'Most Important League' as in the previous season the four clubs who earned promotion from the NNL to the NPFL all maintained their league status while NNL teams has in the past two years played in the finals of the President Federation Cup. Chief Iloenyosi called on all football stakeholders to support Chief Aluo and his entire board in their efforts geared towards promoting the league and taking Nigerian football to greater heights. Chief Iloenyosi also played a role in the NNL Super 8 closing ceremony as he decorated the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Lateef Yusuf of Warri Wolves in the award ceremony. In the same vein, Chief Iloenyosi congratulated Warri Wolves Chairman, Chief Neville Ambakederemo for steering his team to victory in the just concluded Super 8 competition. The ANSFA boss described the success story recorded by Warri Wolves FC as deserving of the team owing to their resilience, hardwork, discipline and dedication. Iloenyosi admonished the Ambakederemo's led team to ensure they prepare well for the uphill task of playing in the top tier of Nigerian club football.

By Ikenna Nwokedi The Chairman of Delta State Teqball Association, Mr. Marvel Dick has stated that the association under his watch and the national body is making effort towards having the game as a medal awarding sports at the upcoming National Sports Festival (NSF). The Delta State Teqball boss made the remarks during an interview with sports writers on Thursday, July 11, 2025 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba, Delta State at the ongoing NNL Super 8 competition. Mr. Dick disclosed that the game has featured as demonstration sports in the past two national sports festivals in Asaba, Delta State and Abeokuta, Ogun State during the 21st and 22nd editions respectively and plans are underway to ensure the game features at the upcoming NSF in Enugu as a medal awarding sports. The Teqball boss also informed that since he introduced the game back in 2020, seven Teqball clubs were developed to boost the games' relevance, create awareness and encourage players to fully be integrated into it which will serve as a platform to stardom. Dick said: "The game of Teqball is gaining relevance not just in Delta State but in the nation at large. Teqball featured at the 21st and 22nd National Sports Festival hosted by Delta State and Ogun State respectively and we are making efforts to ensure the game features as a medal awarding sports at the next NSF in Enugu. "I brought the game here in 2020 and made progress as we developed seven teqball clubs. We have also taken the game to secondary schools so that we can develop the game further at the schools and grassroots for the future of the game," The teqball boss said. Dick highlighted some of the achievements in the game such as sponsoring Nigeria's number one player to an international teqball competition where he emerged as the Most Valuable Player as well as hosting 18 states of the federation in the last national programme hosted by Delta State. The vibrant and youthful sports administrator assured that the game has come to stay and he will continue to give his support towards its growth and development in the state and beyond.

By Ikenna Nwokedi Warri Wolves FC are champions of the 2024/25 Nigeria National League (NNL) season. The seasides on Saturday, 12th July 2025 defeated Wikki Tourists by three goals to two in the grand finale played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba Delta State. The Wolves' took the lead in the 7th minute through Lateef Yusuf's brilliant finish in the early going. The scorer turned provider by assisting Evwierhurhoma Igbunu's simple finish in the 19th minute of the encounter. Amatesiro Shemaye made it three for the Wolves from a tight angle off a second assist from Lateef Yusuf. Wikki Tourists reduced the deficit in the 34th minute as Mahmood Aliyu poked home Habila Simone Sulai assist to bring the game back to life. Wonderson Babas got the second for Wikki in the 59th minute to take the game to a nervy ending, however the Seasiders kept their composure and discipline to see off the contest emerging champions of the season.

By Ikenna Nwokedi The Students' Union Government (SUG) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, on Friday, 11th July, 2025 honoured the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, with a prestigious award for outstanding leadership. The outstanding leadership award was presented to Prof. Arinze-Umobi during the courtesy visit by the Union's executives led by the SUG President, Comrade Samuel Eze at the Council Chambers. Comrade Eze eulogized Prof. Arinze-Umobi for her leadership attributes and motherly role towards the welfare of the students in the University Community and beyond. Comrade Eze averred that Prof. Arinze-Umobi's student first policy is dynamic as can be seen with her programmes and activities for the students. The Union leader also stated that the entire student body recognizes the Acting VC as the SUG Patron of the year for the 2024/25 academic session. Responding, the Acting VC, Prof. Arinze-Umobi appreciated the UNIZIK SUG for their kind gestures and assured them of her continued motherly role, reiterating that they are her children. Prof. Arinze-Umobi assured that her tenure is dedicated to the total welfare of the students as well as their academic growth and development. Highpoints of the visit was presentation of a special portrait from the SUG to the Acting Vice-Chancellor.

By Ikenna Nwokedi All is now set for the 2025 edition of the Chief Kingsley Uduh Junior Tennis Classics scheduled to hold from Thursday, 31st July to Saturday, 2nd August, 2025 at the Standard Tennis Development Club, Dan Anyiam Sports Complex, Owerri, Imo State. The annual tennis competition which is bankrolled by a business mogul, philanthropist and sports administrator, Chief Kingsley Uduh is geared towards unearthing, nurturing and bringing to limelight the next generation of super stars for the game of Tennis in Nigeria. The three-day competition is open to boys for categories of Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 while the girls are for the Under-14 and Under-16 categories. According to Chief Uduh, the competition which is an annual event has come to stay and a platform to further promote the game of Tennis in the South East zone for the youths by harnessing the numerous potentials who play the game. Chief Uduh informed that the tennis classic will also rekindle the nostalgia for the followership of the game and also an avenue to equally entertain teeming sports fans and aficionados in the region. The Anambra-born sports administrator called on all sports stakeholders in the zone and beyond to be part of the upcoming project which will have a far reaching positive impact on the lives of the participants. He admonished the athletes to ensure they exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship during the competition.

By Ikenna Nwokedi The Faculty of Engineering, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, on Thursday, 10th July, 2025 commenced the Engineering Software Training (EST) Programme for the undergraduate students of the Faculty. The programme which was flagged off with an opening ceremony held at the NEEDS Assessment building had the convergence of the Faculty scholars from the various departments, resource persons and the students all in attendance. Declaring the event open in her welcome address, the acting Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi stated that the Engineering Software training programme is a testament to the Faculty's commitment to innovation and excellence. Prof. Arinze-Umobi who was represented by the Director of GS Unit and former Provost, College of Postgraduate Studies, Engr. Prof. Philomena Igbokwe averred that the programme will undoubtedly equip the students with the skills and knowledge required to excel in today's technology-driven engineering landscape. The acting VC informed that the University prioritize producing graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also industry-ready and the training aligns with the current administration's mission to foster academic excellence, innovation and practical skills. The acting VC commended the Faculty for commencing the programme and encouraged the students to make use of this opportunity by learning from the experts and applying the skills gained to real-world engineering challenges. In his opening remarks, Chairman of the occasion and CEO Securecode Software, Engr. Dan Egbue commended the management of the Faculty of Engineering for the novel idea behind the programme describing it as a well-thought out package to ensure that the Faculty produces industry-ready engineers. Engr. Egbue noted that the programme is designed to train students, link their knowledge of engineering principles and mathematical models to its implementation using software tools and in addition enhance their competitive edge when they will be due for the labour market. In his welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Engr. Prof. Ugochukwu Okonkwo disclosed that the programme will ensure that all the undergraduate students develop the needed skills and confidence to apply software tools in solving various engineering problems. The FEG Dean informed that the programme provides a valuable opportunity to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application as students will have the opportunity to simulate, model and optimize systems thereby enhancing their understanding and applying same to real life problems. He noted that the software to learn by each department aligns well with the professional demands as the various departments chose relevant software their students will be learning. Prof. Okonkwo disclosed that upon his emergence as the Dean, he introduced the EST programme with the ambitious vision of "One Semester, One Software" which was later modified by the Faculty Board to "One Session, One Software" with the goal being to equip the students with the knowledge and confidence to apply software tools in their academic and professional pursuits. The scholar thanked the resource persons, professors and senior colleagues for gracing the occasion. On his part, the Chairman of the EST Committee, Engr. Prof. Kenneth Akpado affirmed that the programme was designed to train the students of the Faculty on softwares that will enhance their development. The EST Committee Chairman disclosed that twenty-four (24) softwares were selected for the programme based on relevance to department and was designed in such a way that four softwares were chosen for each department with one software per level. Prof. Akpado also said the software training for the fourth year students will be completed in their final year upon their return from Industrial Training (IT). Prof. Akpado further disclosed that the Faculty is making plans for the programme to be continuous while he called on the students to take the training programme serious for their development. The colourful opening ceremony featured short overview of some Engineering softwares by five resource persons. The resource persons were the Sub-Dean of the Faculty, Engr. Dr. Kingsley Nnakwo who gave insights on ImageJ Software; Coordinator of Telecommunication Programme, Engr. Dr. Obinna Oguejiofor gave an overview on MATLAB Software; Engr. Ikechukwu Okoli gave a brief on ANSYS and Solidworks; Engr. Gabriel Nnamuoko gave highlights on Anaconda Software for Machine Learning and Engr. Collins Okoli talked on CSC Orion Application Software. Other Professors and Senior colleagues who were part of the opening ceremony were the former Dean of the FEG, Prof. Joseph Nwabanne; Prof. Cletus Ohaneme; Prof. Christopher Ezeagwu; Prof. Jeremiah Chukwuneke; Director of Software Development, Dr. Azubuike Aniedu and the various Heads of Departments in the Faculty. In a vote of thanks, the Vice-President (Membership) of Nigeria Universities' Engineering Student Association (NUESA), UNIZIK Chapter, Samuel Uzoamaka appreciated the Dean of the Faculty for his exceptional leadership and unwavering support towards enhancing the academic potentials of the students. He assured that the students will be attentive and committed in the programme so as to enhance their knowledge base. He also called the students to prioritize skill acquisition and seize this golden opportunity for growth and development.

By Ikenna Nwokedi The Department of Science Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Thursday, July 10th 2025 kick started her two-day 2025 Maiden Annual Conference at the University Auditorium. The two-day 2025 Annual Conference which was an assemblage of scholars, stakeholders and professionals in Science Education had its theme as, "Re-imaging Science Teaching for Technological and Advancements in an Era of Insecurity and Economic Meltdown." In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Isaac Nwankwo stated that the conference creates a forum for the converge of scholars and stakeholders in science education to brainstorm on contemporary issues with a view to improving research and learning in the field. Prof. Nwankwo said that there is need to enhance science education through insights and revelations on the current trends in conforming with best global benchmarks and practices. Declaring the event open during her address, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi emphasized the relevance of the conference theme in the era of rapid technological advancements. The Acting Vice-Chancellor who was represented by the Head, Department of Science Education, Rev. Sr. Dr. Madeleine Nwankwo averred that the theme of the Conference is apt and its outcome would go a long way in strengthening the course of Science Education in Nigeria as well as acquainting the participants with a sound knowledge of contemporary issues. In her welcome address, the Head, Department of Science Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Rev. Sr. Dr. Madeleine Nwankwo stated that science education is not merely a transmission of knowledge, but a catalyst for critical thinking, creativity and innovation. Dr. Nwankwo opined that the economic meltdown calls for rethinking of approaches to challenging assumptions and to harness the transformative power of science education. The HOD of Science Education informed that the event also incorporated an award-giving ceremony, fund-raising initiative for the Department's ultramodern science education laboratory building, send-forth for retirees and homecoming for distinguished alumni. The scholar assured of a continuous pursuit of excellence in academic and practical contributions to the field of science education. On her part, the Dean, Faculty of Education, Professor Ebele Okigbo described the theme of the conference as apt. Prof. Okigbo suggested that science education can be enhanced further for more efficient and top notch operations through research and innovation. The Dean noted that there is a need to address key issues such as digital infrastructure, education, innovations and skills development in line with global best practices. The Dean pointed out that with the current trends and changes occasioned by the advent of AI, science education can grow in leaps and bounce. The Chief Guest of Honour and current Pro-chancellor and Chairman Governing Council of the University of Ilorin, H.E. Surv. Abiodun Aluko affirmed that a University is one of the incubators of future leaders and Science Education is an important ingredient in moulding leaders. H.E. Surv. Aluko who was represented by Dr. Stephen Akinyele Ojo informed that Effective leadership is about the ability to perform creditably to achieve results beyond the followers by exhibiting exceptional intellect, knowledge and technical skills in all fields of endeavour. Surv. Aluko advised all in position of authority and leadership to see it as a divine assignment as leaders are ordained by God. He also donated the sum of one million naira in support to the Department of Science Education. In his address, the Keynote Speaker, Prof. Alphonsus Ovute described science as a lens and a lever enabling learners to understand the world and solve real-world problems. Prof. Ovute averred that science education must evolve to remain impactful in this high-stakes era while enumerating the challenges facing the profession such as insecurity, economic constraints and pedagogical stagnation. Prof. Ovute disclosed that there is need to re-imagine science teaching as a tool for survival, innovation and societal renewal while also embracing transformation in science teaching via leveraging on local and global partnership. In a vote of thanks, the LOC Chairman, Prof. Maryann Ndirika thanked the distinguished personalities and everyone for their time in the opening ceremony of the maiden annual Conference and promises made towards strengthening the academic program of the Department. Prof. Ndirika informed that the conference will continue on its second day with technical sessions were research findings will be made public with the aim of engaging in academic discussions and fostering collaborations that will shape the future of the profession. Highlights of the Conference opening day were award conferment and presentations, fundraising for STEM Ultramodern Laboratory building, entertainment in the form dance by the students, exhibition of the scientific products of the Department, supports to the Department by the conference awardees as well as goodwill speeches and remarks by some of the attendees.

By Ikenna Nwokedi Awka Educational zone has emerged as the Champions of the third edition of the School State Finals of the SUBEB/UBEC Intervention Sports Competition. Awka Zone came tops winning a total of 26 medals comprising of 9 Gold, 11 Silver and 6 Bronze medals to beat Onitsha Zone who came second with 5 Gold and 6 Silver while Aguata Zone settled for the third position with 5 Gold and 1 Silver medals. The Schools State Finals of the ASUBEB/UBEC Intervention Sports Competitions for Under-12 boys and girls is organized by the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) in collaboration with Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). The school sports programme which featured five sporting events such as football, chess, scrabble, ayo(ncho) and athletics is geared towards providing a comprehensive development of pupils and students from the 21 Local Government Area of the state in both character, cognitive development and imbibing the spirit of sports participation. In her address, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr. Vera Nwadinaobi stated that the colourful finale is a celebration of energy, teamwork, resilience, and youthful excellence which is part of her administration's commitment to raising well-rounded children that are intellectually sound, morally upright, and physically strong. The ASUBEB Executive Chairman appreciated Gov. Charles Chukwuma Soludo for his bold vision for One Government and One Agenda which has continued to empower every sector including basic education. She also extended her gratitude to UBEC for their continued collaboration and support which is essential in making sporting intervention possible. In her remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh stated that sports is life and one of the strongest domains of learning. Prof. Chuma-Udeh commended Gov. Soludo's vision and drive towards revitalizing every sector and projecting the state on the global map. On his part, the Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC) commended the noble initiative of the ASUBEB. He called on the students and the pupils to showcase their talents, be disciplined and exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship. The colourful school state finals also featured decoration of the successful athletes with winning medals.

In a message of felicitation, Chief Iloenyosi fondly known as the 'The General' prayed for continuous good health, quantum leap and successful reign in the saddle as the NFF President and on the continent as WAFU boss. The former U-17, U-20 and Super Eagles player commended Gusau’s tireless efforts in promoting Nigerian football and his unwavering commitment to the development of the beautiful game in the country. Iloenyosi said: “On this special day, I wish you all the joy, happiness, and fulfillment that life has to offer. Your leadership has been instrumental in shaping the future of Nigerian football and we are grateful for your vision and dedication.” "I call on all football stakeholders in the land to continue to give Gusau the needed support as he continue in his quest of taking Nigerian football to the next level. By Ikenna Nwokedi The President General of Ifitedunu Community in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, Professor Stephen Ufoaroh has congratulated and commended two of the community's illustrious sons, Prince Jerome Obinabo and Prof. Benjamin Arah on their various elevations in the United States of America (USA). Prince Jerome Obinabo was elected as the Treasurer of the Colleyville Lions Club Texas, USA while Professor Benjamin Arah was recently appointed as an Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences at Bowie State University, Maryland, USA. Prof. Ufoaroh in his congratulatory message described their elevations as a product of hard work, dedication and consistency in service. The former Chairperson of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) UNIZIK Branch eulogized them for projecting Ifitedunu on the global map. Comrade Ufoaroh prayed for more grace upon Prince Obinabo and Prof. Arah as they continue to serve God and humanity while admonishing them to continue in their quest of creating opportunities for the youths of the community and beyond. Chijioke Ahiaeke's 7th minute goal from the spot against Crown FC of Ogbomoso gave his side the three points in the first match of the Southern Conference played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba. Mrs Amaefula described the victory as crucial to the aspiration of the team in ensuring they secure one of the available four spots to play in Nigeria's club football top tier, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) come next season. The club CEO attributed the crucial win to hardwork, dedication and fighting spirit from the boys. The club's President also disclosed that the win will raise the team's confidence level going into their second group game against Warri Wolves FC as they will go all out for the maximum points so as to seal their promotion place. She thanked the fans for their immense support to the team while promising to secure an NPFL promotion for next season. On his part, the Team Manager of side, Edwin Chidiebere Nta applauded the boys for the victory which he described as very crucial to their aspiration of playing in the top tier. Nta stated that the win didn't come easy but with determination and discipline they were able to get to the finish line. The club's team manager reminded the lads that the job is not yet done as they need to shift their focus to the next game against Warri Wolves FC on Monday as a win in the upcoming match will seal their position in the ongoing Super 8 Playoffs. Kun Khalifat FC were the first team to register a goal and a victory in the ongoing NNL Super 8 playoffs and will look to consolidate on the current team's display in their next two matches against Warri Wolves FC and Osun United FC. In other results on day one of the ongoing NNL Super 8, Barau FC of Kano played out a goalless draw against Yobe Desert Stars, Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi were forced to a scoreless affair against bitter rivals Doma United of Gombe while Ebenezer Odeyemi's brilliance gave Osun United FC a slim 1-0 victory against Warri Wolves FC.

Chief Aluo made the promise during the draw ceremony of the Super 8 playoff made on Friday, 4th July 2025 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State. Chief Aluo stated that the NNL board has made all the necessary arrangements to ensure a hitch free and seamless eight-day competition which will produce the four clubs that will go on to play in the top tier, NPFL come next season. The NNL boss informed that this will be the board's first assignment after their tenure was extended by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) last thursday. Chief Aluo also disclosed that the eight participating teams got through to the Super 8 Playoff on merit and all have a fighting chance to secure NPFL qualification. The top football administrator affirmed that the 'Most Important League' has in the past two years recorded some achievements as all the NNL teams who got promoted to the NPFL for the 2024/25 season retained their places and in two seasons have had NNL sides pulling through by qualifying for the finals of the President Federation Cup. Chief Aluo thanked the Delta State Government under the leadership of H.E. Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for accepting to host the Super 8 Playoff while also eulogizing the Alh. Ibrahim Musa Gusau's administration for the opportunity to serve for another tenure in the second tier of Nigerian club football. Meanwhile, the Super 8 Playoff will kickoff on Saturday with the first match between Barau Utd versus Yobe Desert Stars FC by 9am. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Ozoh demonstrated profound humanitarian spirit by leading the production of hand sanitizers and liquid soaps, which were distributed across primary and secondary schools in Awka North. Academically, Dr. Ozoh is a trailblazer, She earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Public Health Microbiology from UNIZIK—becoming the program’s first graduate. Her earlier studies include an M.Sc. in Medical/Public Health Microbiology from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), along with a Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology and a National Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology from the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. Dr. Ozoh's leadership credentials are equally impressive, from 2017 to 2020, she served as the pioneer Head of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology at Anambra State Polytechnic, Mgbakwu, laying its foundational academic and structural framework. By Ikenna Nwokedi The War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Club of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka in collaboration with National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Anambra State Command on Tuesday, 1st July 2025 held a successful and colourful commemoration of the 2025 World Drug Day. The World Drug Day Commemoration which is usually marked on June 26th annually across the globe was held at the University auditorium with this year's theme as: "The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention." In his opening remarks, Chairman of the occasion and Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike described drug abuse as a menace in the society and a real concern for all to stem the tide of its negative effects with proper sensitization not just at the higher school level but a message which should cascade down to the post-primary and primary school levels. Dr. Obidike who was represented by Pharmacist Obum Nwadike informed that there is a need to intensify sensitization campaigns, support preventive education in schools and strengthen operations to dismantle drug networks. The scholar admonished parents to be vigilant, be present and instil the right values in their children. In her address, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi stated that the intent of the annual marking of the International Drug Day is to raise global awareness about the devastating impact of drug abuse or misuse on the physical and psychological health of the individuals concerned which in many cases lead to fatalities on the society and on national economies. The Acting Vice-Chancellor who was represented by Prof. Mike Oddih averred that the University is not merely concerned with teaching, research and community service but also keen in raising awareness on the dangers and negative effects of drug abuse for the overall wellbeing of the staff and students. The State Commander NDLEA Anambra State, SC Onyishi Daniel Ogbonna in his remarks emphasized that the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking is not the duty of the government alone but a national call and fight which must be embraced by families, faith leaders, youth groups, communities, civil society and the citizens of the nation. Commander Ogbonna who was represented by the Deputy State Commander of the agency, DSC Dr. Chukwunyere Nwannennanya, FWC, noted that drug abuse is not just a health issue but a threat to peace, development and the future of the youth which has necessitated the need to adopt a comprehensive approach that promotes peace, fosters inclusive development and protects human rights. In narrating the achievements of the agency in stemming the tide of Drug Abuse, he informed that in the past 53 months, over 26,000 persons have received counselling and rehabilitation while the NDLEA has also arrested over 66,000 offenders and seized over 11 million kilograms of illicit drugs. He called for collective support of all critical stakeholders to collaborate with the agency in combating the scourge of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Delivering the Commemoration Lecture on the topic, "The struggle with the deadly pervasive practice of drug abuse: Quo vadis", the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor of Clinical Psychology, UNIZIK, Prof. Michael Ezenwa described the World Drug Day as a day set aside by UNODC to advocate for drug abuse prevention, treat and rehabilitation for users. Prof. Ezenwa highlighted the key targets in stemming the tide of drug abuse as actions, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and recovery programmes while disclosing the consequences of drug abuse as physical and mental health challenges, sexual risk and poor educational outcomes. Prof. Ezenwa informed that the World Drug Report of 2025 disclosed that 316 million people which is approximately 6 percent of the global population aged between 15 and 64 abuse drugs which represented an increase from the estimated 246 million people who used a drug in 2013. The scholar stated that UNIZIK has what it takes to lead other universities in Nigeria towards achieving a relatively drug free campus which can be possible through collaboration and steady efforts by all in the fight against this society's menace. Others who lend their voices during the event are one of the key stakeholders in the fight against the scourge of drug abuse and the traditional ruler of Ogidi Community, HRM Igwe Alexander Onyido represented by his son, Prince Dr. Ifenna Onyido. There were remarks also from a representative from the IG Aguowo academic and health foundation; the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor; the Secretary of UNIZIK NDLEA Committee, Mrs Urenna Okamgba among others. In a vote of thanks, the President of UNIZIK WADA Club, Dr. Alexander Orji thanked all who made the year's celebration colourful, he informed that the fight against drug abuse should be continuous in the quest to make our environment drug free. The World Drug Day celebration also featured quiz competition for secondary schools and undergraduate students of UNIZIK. In the quiz competition for the secondary schools, Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) Onitsha emerged the overall winner ahead of St. Patrick's College Awka and Girls Secondary School Nnewi who came second and third positions respectively. While for the UNIZIK undergraduate students' quiz competition which was held online, Divine Chukwudi Otito of the Department of Medical Rehabilitation came tops ahead of Lilian Ebere Chibueze of the Department of Public Administration who came second and Ikechukwu Godsent Oguoma of the Department of Biomedical Engineering who came third. Richard Chidera Nwoke of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Prosper Sopuruchi Ndubuisi of the Department of Economics and Wisdom Tochukwu Atuegwu of Law Faculty came fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Highpoints of the occasion was award presentations to individuals who have sustained the fight against drug abuse and reward of the secondary schools and undergraduate students' heroics in the quiz competitions.

Speaking during an official event to kickoff the programme held at the Chisco Institute for Logistics and Supply Chain Management Auditorium on Tuesday, 24th June, 2025, the Dean of the Faculty, Engr. Prof. Ugochukwu Okonkwo stated that the programme was in fulfillment of his vision and commitment towards imbibing experiential learning and producing graduates who are well equipped both in learning, character and hands-on experiences to add value to themselves and to the society. Prof. Okonkwo disclosed that the skills acquisition training has nine training hubs which are lucrative when learned properly with the training being the first phase which will be expanded further as it will be part of the SIWES package for 200 level students who will start going for SIWES from 200 level in line with the CCMAS curriculum. The Dean further disclosed that the trainers are people with the requisite capacity drawn from within and outside the University. The scholar advised the students to make the best of the training in order to contribute their quota to societal growth. In his remarks, the Director of Chisco Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Engr. Dr. Tochukwu Onyeyili who gave his support also noted that self discovery, discipline and focus on academic excellence are critical factors needed for a student to excel in an ivory tower and set the tone for success in the real world outside the University. Dr. Onyeyili tasked the trainees to work towards overcoming identified academic development challenges so as to attain self development by inculcating the positive values. The upcoming Super 8 playoffs is expected to hold at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State from July 5th to 12th, 2025 to determine the four teams that will join 16 other teams that will play in the NPFL come 2025/26 League season. Ambakederemo stated that despite the fact that the club's home state is hosting, they are leaving no stones unturned in her preparations and have intensified their training module and pattern to ensure they deliver in what is no doubt the club's biggest assignment of the campaign. The Warri Wolves FC boss averred that playing at home will not give his team any advantage and he would have preferred a neural venue as there will be pressure on his team owing to the fact that other participating clubs are also preparing intensely for the upcoming NPFL promotion cracker. Ambakederemo said: "I want to assure our teeming supporters that Warri Wolves FC will not take anything for granted in the Super 8 playoffs. Although we are playing at home, but we are leaving no stones unturned in our preparations as everyone want to be promoted to the top tier. "Football fans need to understand that home advantage does not play a part in the quest for promotion but instead it may put some pressure on the home side and that is why we have doubled our efforts in preparations through our training module and pattern as we know that this will be fierce and keenly contested. Ambakederemo acknowledged that with the playing personnel in his team and their performance during the regular season in the Southern Conference A, his lads have what it takes to secure one of the promotion slots to the NPFL and in furtherance go on to win the NNL title. "Am very optimistic that we are going to perform well at the upcoming playoffs judging by the performance of our players in the Conference A regular season. We are finalizing our preparations at the moment and the boys are well motivated and turbocharged to secure the NPFL slot and go on to win the title," Ambakederemo said. The Warri Wolves FC Supremo thanked the NNL leadership for their efforts towards having a good season, he also praised their resolve in sticking to the clause that no club in the playoffs would be allowed to strengthen their squad this period by purchasing new players unlike the previous two Super 8 playoffs when teams where allowed to do so. Prof. Arinze-Umobi disclosed that the items which were sanitary pads to female students and tissue papers to their male counterparts was part of her administration's commitment towards the welfare of the students. The acting Vice-Chancellor highlighted some of her key promises to the students which has been fulfilled ranging from the installation of solar systems for improved electrification, improved Wi-Fi access, enhanced water reticulation and other developmental projects across the hostels. The Professor of Laws informed that her administration runs an open door policy with students of the institution as her number one priority. Prof. Arinze-Umobi charged the students to focus on their academics, engage in sporting activities as well as shun vices such as cultism and any form of examination malpractice. During the interactive session with the students, the Acting VC listened to their concerns and suggestions, taking notes of their needs and demands while also assuring them of her continued efforts in improving their welfare and living conditions on campus. Prof. Chimezie Okolocha from the Department of Business Education polled a total of 28 votes to emerge victorious out of 45 accredited voters, beating Prof. K. R. E Okoye of the Department of Industrial Technology Education who polled a total of 16 votes. In her remarks while declaring the results, The acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Arinze-Umobi called on the staff of the Faculty to work in synergy with the Dean-Elect in administering the affairs of the Faculty and taking it to greater heights. The Professor of Laws reminded Prof. Okolocha of the task ahead and demanding nature of the office while calling for collective commitment in achieving the objective of making the Faculty a United front. In her acceptance speech, Prof. Okolocha, who officially is the first substantive Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education (FTVE) unveiled her “SMART” vision. Prof. Ndukwe from the Department of Crop Science and Horticulture polled a total of 50 votes to emerge victorious out of 81 accredited voters, beating Prof. Caleb Ike Ezeano of Agric. Economics and Extension Department who polled a total of 23 votes; Prof. Josiah Okonkwo of the Department of Animal Science who polled a total of 7 votes and Prof. James Obiegbuna of the Department of Food Science and Technology who polled just 1 vote. Declaring the result, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi expressed satisfaction with the electoral process leading to the emergence of a new sheriff for the Faculty. The acting Vice-Chancellor admonished Prof. Ndukwe to lead diplomatically without fear or favour as his duty is to superintend over the affairs of the Faculty. The Professor of Laws advised the new Dean to exhibit servant leadership without gratification so as to leave a legacy that he will be known for by the end of his tenure. In his acceptance speech, Prof. Ndukwe eulogized the teaching staff of the Faculty for the trust and confidence reposed in him. Prof. Ndukwe emphasized that the transition process has ushered the faculty into a more peaceful, focused and purpose-driven unit. Prof. Ndukwe while reiterating his willingness to serve the Faculty, called for support from both teaching and non-teaching staff towards taking the Faculty to greater heights. The scholar also thanked the acting VC for her immense support to the Faculty in her quest of elevating the status of the institution. Also present during the extraordinary Faculty board is University's Acting Registrar, Mr. Victor Modebelu and the outgoing Dean, Prof. Cordelia Ebenebe.

By Ikenna Nwokedi Inter University Sports participation will be enhanced under my watch as the acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. This was the promise made by UNIZIK Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi during a recent interview session with Journalists at her office. Prof. Arinze-Umobi disclosed that in keeping with her promise, she gave approval on her first day in office on May 19th, 2025, for the participation of the University at the Nigeria University Staff Sports Games (NUSSA) hosted by the Bayero University of Kano (BUK) where UNIZIK won five gold medals at the games and was the only institution from the South East zone who featured at the games. Prof. Arinze-Umobi emphasized that sports participation is essential for bonding, conviviality and enhancing work output by staff members. The Professor of Laws congratulated the medal winners at the games for making the institution proud despite the obvious challenge of limited time for competition training and preparations. Prof. Arinze-Umobi who holds the Shotput and Discus record at the NUGA games during her University days assured that the students of the institution will also be part of the upcoming 26th edition of the NUGA games to be hosted by the University of Jos (UNIJOS) holding from the 6th to 16th November, 2025.

By Ikenna Nwokedi Nigeria National League Club Owners and Managers Association (NALCOMA) have commended Nigeria National League (NNL) leadership under the watch of Chief George Aluo for the success story recorded in the just concluded 2024/25 League Season. NALCOMA President, Godwin Enakhena expressed his appreciation at the weekend during a media parley with sports journalists at his Lagos base over the weekend. The NALCOMA boss described the just concluded 2024/25 NNL season as a successful one judging by the participating teams' performance in the four groups during the regular league matches and as well the conduct of their teeming fans which was essential in recording successful conclusion to league matches at various match centres. Enakhena while remarking positively on officiating averred that there was a drastic improvement in the performance of match officials compared to the previous seasons stating that it is the hallmark of the commitment and dedication by the NNL leadership in ensuring that the 'Most Important League' is at par with the top tier, the NPFL. The NALCOMA boss who doubles as the Chairman of Sporting Lagos FC went further to commend the NNL for securing a venue for the upcoming Super 8 playoffs scheduled to hold from July 5th to 12th, 2025 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State while also eulogizing the Executive Governor of Delta State, H.E. Sheriff Oborowori for his interest and passion towards football development in the land. Enakhena charged the teams who will feature in the Super 8 playoffs to put in their best to ensure that the NNL produce the best four teams that will feature in the top tier of Nigeria's club football come the 2025/26 season. The Super 8 playoffs will feature Warri Wolves, Crown FC of Ogbomosho, Kun Khalifat FC of Owerri, Osun United FC, Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi, Yobe Desert Stars, Doma United FC of Gombe and Barau FC of Kano.

In a congratulatory message endorsed by the NALMMA President and Secretary, Abdulsalam Ibrahim Imam and Dr. Ikenna Nwokedi respectively, the NALMMA praised the hardwork of the NNL Chairman, Chief George Aluo and his team for the success story. The NALMMA averred that part of the success story of the just concluded season was an improved conduct of match officials in their officiating, the turn out of teeming fans at match centres and the positive behaviour of fans during league games. The NALMMA also went further to commend the NNL for their efforts in securing a venue for the upcoming Super 8 playoffs scheduled to hold at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba from July 5th to 12th, 2025 while also commending the Executive Governor of Delta State, H.E. Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborovwori for his passion and drive toward sports development using the instrumentality of football. The NNL Media Managers' Association called on participating clubs to put in their best in ensuring that the best teams earned their promotions to the top tier, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) come 2025/26 season. The Acting VC received the books during a visit by Dr. Onyilofor to her office . The book which is titled: “UNRAVEL YOUR UNIQUENESS: Discover the champion in you,” is aimed at guiding the readers in discovering their potentials, updating their knowledge base and bringing out the best in the readers. In his remarks while presenting the books, Dr. Onyilofor stated that the book is designed to eliminate the barriers which stands as an obstacle to our true identities, putting readers on the path to wealth, health, success, and significance. The scholar and philanthropist informed that the book will have a special impact on the lives of the University students towards achieving excellence and becoming self-reliant. Responding, Prof. Arinze-Umobi encouraged the members of the University Community to endeavour to read the book. The Acting VC informed that the book will aid individuals in redefining themselves and developing their potentials for personal improvement. Prof. Arinze-Umobi assured Dr. Onyilofor that the books would be placed in the university library shelf for optimal use and to serve as valuable resource towards academic growth. Prof. Arinze-Umobi urged other alumni to emulate Dr. Onyilofor's kind gesture by contributing their quota towards the growth of their alma mater.

By Ikenna Nwokedi The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi on Tuesday, 17th June, 2025 visited the pre-degree study centre of the University domiciled at Mbaukwu. The visit by the Acting Vice-Chancellor was to inspect the Centre of the Pre-Degree programme of the institution previously known as the Pre-Science programme. In the course of the visit, Prof. Arinze-Umobi inspected the student's hostels to assess their challenges with a view to proffering solutions. The Acting VC informed that the visit is in line with her administration's mantra of “Feeling the pulse of Staff, Students and finding solutions.” During her interaction with the students, the students highlighted some of the challenges they face ranging from the hostel's leaking roof, faulty doors, insufficient cooking space, and a need for expanded toilet facilities to promote hygienic living. They also pointed out other challenges such insufficient drinking water and inadequate power supply to the hostels. In her response, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor assured the students that their concerns would be addressed immediately in ensuring that they have a memorable stay at the centre in the course of their academic pursuit Prof. Arinze-Umobi informed that her administration is committed towards the construction of a central kitchen while there would be an expansion of the available toilet facilities. Prof. Arinze-Umobi also promised to fumigate the hostels and clear the overgrown grasses around the hostel premises to ensure safety and well-being of the students. She admonished them to remain focused and not to loss sight of why they are at the centre which is to study hard, pass their exams and gain admission into the institution as bonafide students.

The scholarship scheme which is the brainchild and initiative of the association's Global and National President, Dr. Ikechukwu Innocent Umeh is geared towards supporting educational growth in the institution and the society at large by empowering exceptional and underprivileged students of the institution as well as promoting reading culture among the students and the youths of the ivory tower and beyond. According to Dr. Umeh, the iconic event which is a landmark initiative is aimed at reaffirming his administration's unwavering commitment to academic excellence, student support and inclusive development. The NAUAA Global President emphasized that Education is key to societal growth and development which is why all and sundry should join hands in enhancing and promoting one of the most important sectors of the nation's dynamics. Prof. Arinze-Umobi made the disclosure during an exclusive interview session with the UNIZIK FM Radio, the official mouthpiece of the University at her office on Thursday, 5th June, 2025. The Acting Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the welfare and job satisfaction of the members of staff of the institution is topmost on her priority under her watch as the institution's Chief Executive. Prof. Arinze-Umobi during the interview session, also disclosed that just like her first missionary journey, she will re-introduce a tuition free scheme for staff members of the institution who wish to embark on academic pursuit at the postgraduate level. Prof. Arinze-Umobi assured that her administration will continue to run an open door policy to ensure that the institution thrives in all sectors such as academics and administration in order to lift the institution to enviable height.
