UNIZIK Accountancy Department to Hold 7th International Hybrid Conference on Accounting, Governance, Technology

The Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Management Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, will hold its 7th International Hybrid Conference from 16 to 18 June, 2026.

The conference, themed “Shaping Africa’s Future through Accounting, Governance, Technology and Sustainable Business Management,” will take place at the ASUU Secretariat, UNIZIK, Awka.

Activities will begin with a Pre-Conference Symposium on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, on the theme, “From Vision to Legacy: Inspiring the Next Generation of Responsible Business Leaders.”

The symposium will feature seasoned professionals and thought leaders who will speak on leadership, innovation, ethics, entrepreneurship, and responsible business practices.

The main conference opens on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, with an Opening Ceremony, followed by plenary and technical sessions on Thursday, 18 June 2026.

Special Guest of Honour for the event is the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, H.E. Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim; Keynote Speaker is Dr. Rabiu Olowo, Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC).

The Lead Paper Presenters are Chief Osita Chidoka, Former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development; Prof. Suleiman Aruwa, Professor of Accounting and Finance as well as Major Gen. Charles Ofoche (Rtd), Former Director-General Armed Forces Research and Development Bureau.

Sports Commissioner, Agha Mba Dissolves Solution FC Management, Appoints Iloenyosi As Supervisor

The Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, has dissolved the entire management structure of Solution Football Club with immediate effect.

The directive was conveyed to club officials and staff on Thursday, 11th June 2026, during a meeting convened by the Commissioner. He was represented by the Director of Sports, Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Mr. Emeka Obidimma, at the ASSDC office in Awka.

Announcing the decision, Mr. Obidimma said the dissolution affects all members of the management, technical crew, and other staff of the club.

“In line with the Commissioner’s directive, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, has been appointed to stand in as Supervisor for Solution FC on an interim basis,” Obidimma stated.

“This arrangement will remain in place pending the appointment of a substantive chairman and the constitution of a new management team.”

He further directed all club officials currently in possession of Solution FC properties and assets to hand them over to the ASSDC Director with immediate effect.

The move is part of efforts to reposition the club in line with the Soludo administration’s “Solution Agenda” for sports development in Anambra State.

Chief Iloenyosi is expected to supervise, advise and oversee the day-to-day running of the team until a new management team is constituted.

Solution FC is owned by the Anambra State Government and currently competes in the second tier of Nigerian Professional club football, the Nigeria National League (NNL).

Prof. Okonkwo Urges Local Content Push at UNIZIK 126th Inaugural Lecture

The need for stronger university-industry collaboration and increased local content in Nigeria’s engineering sector topped discussions as Engr. Prof. Ugochukwu Chuka Okonkwo delivered the 126th Inaugural Lecture of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) on Thursday, 11th June 2026.

The lecture titled, "The Engineer, Materials and Machines Tributaries with Novelties," was presented by the Professor of Mechanical Design and Materials Technology and Dean, Faculty of Engineering, at the Zephaniah Madubuko Auditorium, Faculty of Social Sciences, UNIZIK.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Okonkwo described an engineer as a person professionally trained to apply scientific knowledge, mathematics and ingenuity to develop products or processes useful to society.

He noted that materials are the “first language of innovation” upon which every engineering breakthrough is anchored, especially in the current era where smart materials, composites, biomaterials, metamaterials and nano-structured substances are redefining the limits of scientific creation.

On machines, the 126th Inaugural Lecturer highlighted that they no longer merely obey commands but now interpret, adapt and collaborate.

Prof. Okonkwo stressed that enhancing productivity and efficiency in engineering requires more than improved materials and machines. He said engineers must thoroughly examine operations within engineering systems and subsystems to achieve optimal performance.

Drawing from his research, the scholar recommended strong university-industry-research institute synergy to drive end-user-focused engineering research. He also proposed that 30 percent of machine components in critical sectors should be sourced locally, while calling on the Federal Government to revitalize the Ajaokuta Steel Complex with clear timelines.

Earlier, while declaring the event open, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, described inaugural lectures as core to university culture and a platform for professors to showcase research in their fields.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Hilda Osisioma, the Vice-Chancellor assured of management’s continued support for teaching, research and community service.

Also speaking, a member of the Inaugural Lecture Committee, Engr. Prof. Joseph Nwabanne, described the 126th lecture as unique because the presenter is the current Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. He commended Prof. Okonkwo for his academic achievements.

The highpoint of the occasion was the decoration of the Inaugural Lecturer with the University’s Medal of Honour by the Vice-Chancellor.

UNIZIK Holds 12th Ogbalu Memorial Lecture, Calls for Greater Igbo Role in National Politics

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka on Tuesday, 9th June 2026, held the 12th edition of the Chief Dr. Frederick Chigozie Ogbalu Memorial Lecture.

The lecture, titled, "The Place of the Igbo Race in Nigeria," was held at the ASUU-NAU Secretariat, UNIZIK, Awka.

In his opening remarks, Chairman of the occasion and President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, said the lecture series honours Chief Ogbalu’s commitment to the promotion of Igbo language and culture.

Senator Azuta-Mbata noted that the lecture is vital for shaping narratives about the Igbo people, stressing that despite claims of marginalization, Ndigbo possess the capacity to play a prominent role in Nigerian politics.

Declaring the event open, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, commended the Department of Igbo Language for instituting the lecture in honour of an icon who contributed immensely to promoting the cultural values of Ndigbo.

Prof. Anyaehie who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), assured of the University management’s continued support for the lecture series and the preservation of Igbo heritage.

In her remarks, Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, Prof. Nkoli Nnyigide, said the lecture series had been instrumental to her career as a scholar. She thanked all contributors to the programme’s success over the years and prayed for God’s continued blessings on Chief Ogbalu for his service to humanity and promotion of Igbo ideals.

Also speaking, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. George Onwudiwe, described the lecture as symbolic in recognizing a true son of Igbo land who contributed in numerous ways to projecting the Igbo race and its cultural heritage. Prof. Onwudiwe applauded the organizing committee for a job well done towards a successful lecture series.

Delivering the lecture, Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University, Owerri, Prof. Uchefula Chukwumaeze, enumerated the contributions of Ndigbo across all sectors to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

Prof. Chukwumaeze stated that the Igbo race has been marginalized in Nigerian politics despite having the capacity and dexterity to provide leadership and steer the country forward. The scholar urged Ndigbo not to give up on their aspirations to lead the nation, noting that the path to greatness comes with challenges.

The VC of Imo State University commended the organizers for providing a platform to showcase Igbo identity.

The event featured the presentation of awards, goodwill messages in support of the Ogbalu Lecture and various cultural performances.

Anambra Male, Female Teams Listed For 2026 Customs Volleyball Premier League

Anambra State has received an official invitation to feature both male and female teams in Phase One of the 2026 Comptroller-General of Customs National Volleyball Premier League, scheduled to hold from 13th to 26th June 2026 at the Indoor Sports Hall of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

This was contained in a memo from the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), signed by its Secretary General, Wasilat Aliyu-Abass, and addressed to the Chairman of the Anambra State Volleyball Association.

The letter, dated 5th June 2026 and titled _"RE: LETTER OF INVITATION FOR THE 2026 COMPTROLLER-GENERAL OF CUSTOMS NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUE FIRST PHASE FOR MALE AND FEMALE FROM 13TH TO 26TH JUNE, 2026 AT THE MKO ABIOLA NATIONAL STADIUM INDOOR SPORTS HALL, ABUJA – EXTENSION OF DATE,"_ clarified adjustments to the competition schedule.

Making reference to an earlier correspondence, NVBF/LMC/PREM/VOL.1/136 dated 29th May 2026, the Secretary General stated: “I wish to inform you that the above named championship, earlier scheduled from 13th to 26th June 2026, has been re-confirmed to run from 13th to 26th June 2026.”

According to the memo, the revised details are as follows:
*Venue*: Indoor Sports Hall, MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
*Arrival*: 13th June 2026.
*Technical Meeting*: 14th June 2026.
*Competition Days*: 15th to 27th June 2026.

The invitation paves the way for Anambra’s male and female volleyball teams to compete against elite clubs across the country in the first phase of the nation’s top-tier volleyball league.

Officials of the Anambra State Volleyball Association are expected to begin camping and selection processes ahead of the championship as the state looks to make a strong impression at the national event.

GUO Pushes For Education, Enterprise Growth in Anam, Donates Pilot Classroom Blocks

Chairman of GUO Transport, Chief Godwin Ubaka Okeke, has donated five classroom blocks to Archbishop Onyemelukwe Grammar School, Oroma-Etiti, Anambra West Local Government Area. He also called on community stakeholders, the private sector, and well-meaning individuals to support the development of secondary education in Anam communities.

The donation was unveiled during the joint celebration of Chief Okeke’s 77th birthday and that of his wife, Lady Patricia Obiageli Okeke, who turned 72. The occasion was marked with a special thanksgiving mass at All Saints Anglican Church, Oroma-Etiti, Anam.

Speaking at the event, Chief Okeke described education as the bedrock of sustainable development, stressing that any society seeking growth must invest in education. He lamented that many schools in Anam still lack basic facilities such as classrooms, desks, laboratories, and toilets, forcing students to learn in overcrowded and unsafe conditions.

Chief Okeke urged successful indigenes and corporate organizations to adopt schools in the area through donations, renovations, and scholarship programmes, noting that investment in human capital must go beyond rhetoric to deliberate action.

The Adazi-Ani born philanthropist pledged ₦100 million for scholarships and educational development in Anam communities, to be disbursed at ₦20 million per year for the next five years. He also disclosed plans to establish an agrarian community store to preserve farm produce, boost revenue through agriculture, and reduce food wastage in the area.

Chief Okeke expressed appreciation to the Chief Executive Officer of Dozzy Oil, Chief Daniel Chukwudozie, for donating ₦50 million towards the church project. He further appealed to people of the area to prioritize education for future growth and development.

In his sermon, the Bishop of Niger East, Rt. Revd. Obiora Uzochukwu, described Chief Okeke’s gesture as “true service to God and humanity” worthy of emulation. He said the lives of Chief Okeke and his wife are a testimony of generosity, adding that GUO has consistently impacted lives.

The Bishop urged others to emulate the GUO model of philanthropy, stressing that alleviating the suffering of others is a practical way of spreading the gospel. He called on everyone, regardless of status, to contribute their quota in service to humanity.

Speaking on behalf of traditional rulers, the Igwe of Ivite-Anam Kingdom, HRH Igwe Sunday Ozoemena, commended Chief Okeke for his intervention. He said the philanthropic gesture would ease the burden on schools, improve learning conditions, and inspire other indigenes to invest in community development.

On his part, the son of the philanthropist, Dr. Chukwuemeka Okeke, assured that he and his siblings would uphold their parents’ legacy and sustain support for humanity.

The colourful event also featured a foundation-laying ceremony for a new All Saints Anglican Church building and the cutting of the ribbon to officially commission the newly constructed classroom blocks, performed by Chief Okeke.

Highlights of the celebration included the cutting of the birthday cakes by the celebrant and his wife, as well as the planting of a tree to encourage afforestation in the community.

ANSFA Chairman, Iloenyosi Hails Agha Mba’s Inclusive Approach, Pledges Synergy with Sports Ministry

The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, has commended the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Patrick Agha Mba, for his open-door policy and commitment to work with football stakeholders in the state.

Chief Iloenyosi gave the commendation on Friday, 5 June 2026, while responding during the “Thank You Luncheon” hosted by the Commissioner for sports stakeholders, aficionados, and leaders of sports associations at the Ministry’s conference hall in Awka.

The ANSFA boss described the meeting as historic, noting that it was the first time in a long while that a Commissioner for Sports in Anambra State would invite the FA Chairman for a meeting and a programme of this nature.

“We are grateful to Hon. Agha Mba for this gesture. This is the first time in a long while that a Sports Commissioner in Anambra is extending this kind of hand of fellowship to the FA. It shows he is ready to carry everyone along,” Iloenyosi said.

He thanked the Commissioner for promising to work in synergy with the State FA and assured that ANSFA would reciprocate by working closely with the Ministry to reposition sports, especially football, in Anambra.

“ANSFA is ready to work hand in hand with the Ministry. We share the same vision – to develop sports and take it from recreation to a real economic driver. We will give the Commissioner all the support he needs,” he added.

Chief Iloenyosi further pledged to pursue unity among all aggrieved parties within the football family in the state to ensure peace and faster growth of the game. He maintained that a united football front is critical to talent discovery and grassroots development.

“We will reach out to all aggrieved parties. Football cannot grow in an atmosphere of rancour. Our mandate is to unite everyone for the good of Anambra football,” the FA Chairman stated.

He promised that ANSFA, under his leadership, would continue to put Anambra on the national and global map through the “lovely game of football,” citing recent successes in hosting President Federation Cup matches and other national engagements in the state.

Chief Iloenyosi also lauded Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for providing the enabling environment that has made Anambra attractive for major football events, adding that stakeholders must leverage the current goodwill to build a sustainable football ecosystem in the state.

Agha Mba Hosts Anambra Sports Stakeholders, Commends Their Support for Sector Growth

The Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr Patrick Agha Mba, on Friday, 5 June 2026, hosted a “Thank You Luncheon” for sports stakeholders, aficionados, and leaders of sports associations in Anambra State.

The meeting, which brought together sports promoters, club owners, sports association chairmen and administrators, was held at the Ministry’s conference hall near Government House, Awka.

During the luncheon, Mba unveiled plans to reposition sports as a major component of Anambra State’s creative economy. He stressed the need to transform sports from a recreational activity into a sustainable culture and viable economic sector.

The Commissioner disclosed that the Ministry has developed a policy framework to establish Youth and Sports Departments in all Local Government Council Areas to strengthen grassroots sports development.

Mr Mba further revealed that plans are underway to encourage every LGA to host its own sports festival as a means of reviving sporting activities and discovering young talents.

He noted that the initiative would help create a vibrant sports ecosystem capable of generating opportunities for youths while contributing to the state’s economic growth.

According to him, the gathering was an opportunity to appreciate stakeholders whose support and faith in Anambra sports had sustained the Ministry’s efforts over the years.

He called for continued collaboration among stakeholders, urging them to support the Ministry, offer constructive criticism, and hold public officials accountable in the collective pursuit of sports excellence.

The Commissioner reaffirmed his commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders to position Anambra State and the South East as a leading hub for sports development, talent discovery, and economic opportunities through sports. He also commended them for their massive contributions to the growth of the sector in the state.

Mba added that the Ministry remains open to new ideas and partnerships that will take sports to greater heights in Anambra.

UNIZIK Pre-Degree Unit Holds 2026 Orientation for Students

The Pre-Degree Unit of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Friday, 5 June 2026, held its one-day orientation programme for students at the Pre-Degree Centre, Mbaukwu.

The orientation, themed, “Career Exploration and Goal Setting”, was aimed at preparing students for a successful stay in the programme.

Declaring the event open, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, represented by Governing Council member Prof. Pius Okoye, said the 2026 orientation was designed to ease students into the Pre-Degree programme. The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the Mbaukwu campus is being upgraded from a mini-campus to a full campus with the relocation of the JUPEB programme.

Prof. Anyaehie stressed the importance of time management, reminding the students that they are not yet full undergraduates of UNIZIK. He noted that admission into the University can only be achieved through success in their examinations.

In his welcome address, the Director of the Pre-Degree Unit, Engr. Prof. Paul Okolie, marked his one year in office by highlighting challenges and achievements at the centre. The Director cited poor lighting as a major challenge that hindered movement at night.

On achievements, Prof. Okolie listed the installation of 100 solar street lights, provision of solar lighting in classrooms to enable night reading, construction of a kitchen and conveniences for both staff and students, and water reticulation with shower facilities.

The scholar added that his administration also digitalized the application process, increased teachers’ honoraria, and improved wages for casual workers. Prof. Okolie further disclosed that following the Vice-Chancellor’s visit to the Igwe of Mbaukwu, the centre has been designated a study campus of the University.

The Pre-Degree Director confirmed that Mbaukwu will host the JUPEB programme from September. He urged students to read hard and shun examination malpractice, warning that paying anyone for admission into UNIZIK is illegal and punishable.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Pre-Degree Programme Board and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Alex Asigbo, represented by Prof. Nwachukwu Obiakor, charged the students to take their studies seriously while commending the Pre-Degree Unit staff for their work at Mbaukwu. Prof. Asigbo added that the University is on an upward trajectory.

Delivering the lecture on “Career Exploration and Goal Setting”, the Guest Lecturer and Director, Centre for Counselling and Career Development, Prof. Harry Obi Nwosu, urged students to distinguish themselves by focusing on the task ahead. He said the theme was apt because career success goes beyond passing examinations to understanding what it takes to excel in a chosen field.

“There is no small course in the University. Be the best at what you do, because excellence attracts honour and respect,” Prof. Nwosu said, while x-raying different career paths.

Other speakers included the Chief Safety Officer of the University, Mr. Obi Collins, who spoke on safety matters at the centre; Dr. Lucy Udedi, who represented the Director of the UNIZIK Medical Centre and explained the role of the University’s medical services; and the Traditional Ruler of Mbaukwu, represented by the heir to the throne, Prince Engr. Chukwuemeka Anugwu.

In a vote of thanks, Deputy Director of the Pre-Degree Unit, Dr. Vivian Anakwenze, thanked members of University Management for attending and charged the students to make the most of the opportunity by excelling during their short stay at the centre.

Highlights of the event includes medical screening organized for the students as well as presentation of cash rewards and medals to student-athletes who emerged victorious in football and volleyball matches.

UNIZIK Female Football Team Beats King and Queens FA 2-1 in FASU Games Build-Up

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Female Football Team defeated King and Queens Football Academy of Umudioka 2-1 in a friendly match played on Sunday, 31 May 2026, at the Coke Centre football pitch, UNIZIK.

The match is part of the team’s preparations for the 12th All Africa University Games, scheduled for 9th to 16th August, 2026 in Cairo, Egypt.

UNIZIK took the lead in the 15th minute through Chiamaka Favour Okafor before Chidimma Okoye doubled the advantage in the 38th minute. The visitors pulled one back in the second half, but the UNIZIK side held on for the win.

The victory follows an earlier 4-0 thrashing of Ojoto in another preparatory match as the team intensifies build-up to the continental event.

The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) has confirmed that the 12th All Africa University Games will be hosted by the Egyptian Universities Sports Federation in collaboration with leading Egyptian institutions.

The Games will bring together student-athletes and university stakeholders from across Africa for a week of competition and collaboration, with Nigeria listed among the invited nations.

UNIZIK To Hold Combined 20th, 21st Convocation Ceremony in November 2026

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, will hold its combined 20th and 21st Convocation Ceremony from Sunday, 15 to Friday, 20 November 2026.

The new date was announced by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie during the 244th Senate meeting of the University held on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, at the Zephaniah Madubuko Auditorium, Faculty of Social Sciences.

Prof. Anyaehie said the six-day event will begin with a thanksgiving service on 15 November and will cater to graduands of the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

The University's Numero Uno informed that activities will include the award of degrees, honorary degrees, Convocation lecture and the conferment of Emeritus Professorial titles.

The scholar explained that the November date aligns with the birthday of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the university’s namesake, while the earlier proposed date of 17–20 June 2026 did not receive approval from the University’s Governing Council.

The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed that the welfare of students and staff remains a top priority throughout his five-year administration.

UNIZIK Signs MoU with Chaudhary Devi Lal University, India to Boost Academic Collaboration

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chaudhary Devi Lal University (CDLU), Haryana, India, to expand cooperation in teaching, research, learning, and career development.

The virtual signing ceremony marked a step toward strengthening global academic exchange, research collaboration, and cultural ties between the two institutions.

Under the agreement, both universities will collaborate on joint academic events, student and staff exchange programmes, and the sharing of educational resources and research partnerships.

Speaking during the ceremony, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie said the partnership would leverage the university’s strengths in teaching and research to broaden academic opportunities for staff and students. Prof. Anyaehie expressed optimism that the collaboration with CDLU would advance academic growth and staff development.

CDLU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Vijay Kumar gave a brief overview of his
institution, noting it was named after Chaudhary Devi Lal, a former Deputy Prime Minister of India. He highlighted the coincidence that both universities bear the names of statesmen who served their countries with distinction. Prof. Kumar said the partnership with UNIZIK held strong potential and pledged CDLU’s commitment to its success for mutual benefit.

The ceremony was facilitated by Prof. Charles Nwadigwe, Director of International Collaboration and Linkages at UNIZIK, and Prof. Anu Shukla, Dean of International Relations and Foreign Affairs at CDLU.

Both vice-chancellors signed their copies of the MoU live during the event, while other officials present witnessed and applauded the proceedings.

Chaudhary Devi Lal University is a state-owned institution in Sirsa district, Haryana. Established by the Haryana government on April 2, 2003, it has 24 academic departments offering 21 career-oriented and specialized programmes.

Anambra FA Sets June 30 for Board Election, Lauds Gov. Soludo on Sports Revitalization

The Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) has fixed Tuesday, June 30, 2026, for its board election, ahead of the expiration of the current board’s tenure on July 27, 2026.

The decision was reached during a virtual meeting on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, according to a communiqué issued on May 27 and signed by the communiqué drafting committee led by Mr. Ralph Chidozie George.

The board directed the ANSFA Electoral Committee to immediately begin preparations to ensure a credible, transparent, peaceful, and hitch-free election in line with relevant statutes.

Hon. Patrick Agha Mba has pledged to drive a bottom-up approach to sports development in Anambra State, aimed at talent discovery, youth empowerment and stronger community engagement.

Agha Mba, who served as Commissioner for Youth Development in Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s first tenure, was among the few cabinet members retained. He was sworn in to the expanded role of Commissioner for Youth Empowerment and Sports.

Speaking during the inauguration, Hon. Mba said his priority is to build a sustainable sports ecosystem that connects grassroots activity to state-level growth.

Agha Mba said: “My focus is a bottom-up approach to sports that harnesses talent, empowers young people, and deepens community engagement,”

“The aim is to create a system where growth starts at the grassroots and feeds into the development of sports across the state.”

Mba disclosed that in a way of achieving this objective, the ministry will push for a sports law that empowers Local Government Councils to drive talent discovery and development at the grassroots. He added that the ministry will collaborate with LGAs and the private sector to build and sustain the ecosystem.

He thanked Governor Soludo for the opportunity to continue serving the state in the new capacity.

Nze Chukwunenye Okoli has commended the ongoing seven-day football scouting programme for players aged 18 to 23 at the Awka City Stadium.

Organized by the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) in collaboration with Dynamic Sports Academy, Aguluzigbo, the exercise began on Wednesday, 13th May and runs through Tuesday, 19th May 2026.

A total of 12 professional football clubs in the State are participating in the programme including Dynamic Sports Academy Team A and B, Edel FC, BONFA, Peace FC, Game Changer FC Awka, United FC Amawbia, Anambra Selected FC, Oriental FC Awka, Maureen Mmadu FC and Alelluia FA of Awka.

Leading the assessment are chief scouts Bernardo Da Silva of Brazil and Pedro Batista of Portugal, who are evaluating players for potential opportunities abroad.

Speaking at the venue on Friday, Nze Okoli, popularly known as Akajiugo N’Uga, said the initiative aims to give talented players of Anambra origin a pathway to professional careers in Europe, Asia, and South America.

Nze Okoli disclosed that the scouting programme will become an annual event and urged participants to remain focused and dedicated. He also expressed confidence in the expertise of the chief scouts.

“The goal is to open doors for our boys who have the talent but lack the platform. With the right exposure, Anambra can produce players who will excel globally,” Okoli said.

In his reaction, Coach Donatus Ezeokafor, Proprietor of Dynamic Sports Academy and ANSFA board member, thanked Okoli for sponsoring the programme. He said the scouts have expressed satisfaction with the quality of play so far and expressed hope that about 20 players would be discovered.

Ezeokafor charged the players to remain obedient, disciplined and committed to improve their chances of selection. Also present as part of the scouting programme is the Secretary of ANSFA, Mr. Ralph Nweke.

A highlight of Friday’s session was a ceremonial kickoff performed by Okoli to mark the midpoint of the weeklong exercise.

The programme continues daily at the Awka City Stadium ahead of the final selection and closing on Tuesday.

Pedro Uzoma Unity Cup 2026 Set for Kickoff in Onitsha

The 2026 edition of the Pedro Uzoma Unity Cup will get underway on Saturday, 16th May, 2026 at the Ezechima School Field on Awka Road, Onitsha, as nine Under-17 clubs compete for top honours in the grassroots football tournament.

Sponsored by Onitsha-born former professional footballer Pedro Chidiebere Uzoma and coordinated by the Anambra State Grassroots Football Managers, the competition is designed to unearth young talent and strengthen football development at the grassroots level in Onitsha.

All fixtures will be staged at the Ezechima School Field as the nine participating teams have been drawn into three groups. Group A will feature 12 Star FC, Lion Star FC and Jombo FC. Michael FC will slug it out in Group B against Winners FC and Niger Tracas FC while Group C has 3 Stars FC, Sure FC and Elite FC.

Defending champions 12 Star FC will open the tournament at 3:00pm against Lion Star FC in a fixture expected to set the tone for the group stage. The quarter-finals will run from 4th to 8th June, with the semi-finals slated for 12th June, 2026. Organisers said the date for the final will be announced in due course.

Trophies and cash prizes await the winner, runners-up, and third-placed team, while consolation prizes will also be awarded to outstanding players and teams.

Speaking ahead of the kickoff, sponsor Pedro Uzoma said the competition is aimed at advancing grassroots football in Onitsha, engaging young people productively, and steering them away from crime. He also disclosed that the competition which is an annual football programme is also his own way of giving back to the society.

ANSFA Chairman Iloenyosi Dedicates Best State FA Award To High Chief Nwabueze

The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, has dedicated the association’s award as Nigeria’s Best State Football Association to High Chief Jim Martins Nwabueze, Agubuzo N’Dunukofia and Akubudike N’Umudioka, in recognition of his contributions to football development in the state.

Speaking after the presentation, Chief Iloenyosi thanked High Chief Nwabueze for his unwavering support, particularly for sponsoring the Anambra State football league after a 30-year hiatus.

Iloenyosi said: “The intervention has revived grassroots football and given young talents across the state a platform to showcase their abilities.

“High Chief Nwabueze stepped in at a critical time when the state league had been dormant for three decades. His commitment has given new life to football in Anambra, and this award belongs to him as much as it does to ANSFA.” said the ANSFA Boss.

ANSFA was named Best State Football Association by the Nigeria National League (NNL) following the conclusion of the NNL Super 4 tournament in Ikenne, Ogun State, held from Monday, 4th May to Friday, 8th May 2026. The appointees are Olisa Onuchukwu, (South East) ex-international player and Secretary General of the All Nigerian Football Players Union (ANFPU), and Ayodele Thomas, ( South West) former NWFL Board Member, FIFA Licensed Football Agent, and CEO of TopPro Management.

Chief Iloenyosi, who recently declared his intention to contest for the South East seat in the forthcoming NFF elections, said the appointments reflect his commitment to assembling an experienced team with deep roots in Nigerian football.

Onuchukwu brings years of advocacy for player welfare and a strong connection to the professional football community, while Thomas adds boardroom experience from the women’s game, expertise in player representation, and a wide network across the football business.

Edel FC have emerged champions of the 2026 NEROS Pharmaceuticals Anambra FA Cup after a 2-0 victory over Amanda FC in Sunday’s final at Neros Stadium, Nanka.

Solomon Ugwu opened the scoring with a fine finish on the stroke of half-time in the 45th minute, before Damian Udoye sealed the win with a powerful strike in the 74th minute. The result ensured the defending champions secured back-to-back titles and the N2 million star prize, while debutants Amanda FC received N1 million as runners-up.

Defending champions Edel FC secured their place in the final with a 7-6 penalty shootout victory over Obosi United FC, following a goalless draw in regulation time.

The final is scheduled for Sunday, 26 April 2026, at Neros Stadium, Nanka by 3pm while Game Changers FC will square up against Obosi United FC in the third and fourth placed playoffs scheduled to be played by 12noon.

The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi has mourned the demise of a foremost Nigeria's football administrator and former Nigeria Football Association, President, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima.

In a condolence message on Saturday, April 18, 2026 made available to the media, the ANSFA Chairman described Alhaji Galadima's demise as a big loss to the nation's football circus.

The message reads, "I wish to express my profound sadness over the passing of former Nigeria Football Association Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima.

"Alhaji Galadima was a towering figure in Nigerian football administration. His vision, integrity and tireless dedication played a pivotal role in the development of football in Nigeria. Under his leadership, the game witnessed remarkable growth, stronger structures, and renewed respect on the continent and beyond.

"His contributions to grassroots development, club football and the national teams remain a reference point for administrators across generations. Nigerian football has indeed lost a statesman and a father.

"On behalf of the Board, Congress, and entire football community in Anambra State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Galadima family, praying that Almighty God grants them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

"We also commiserate with the entire Nigerian football family, the Nigeria Football Federation and all stakeholders who worked closely with him. May his legacy of service and patriotism continue to guide us as we strive to build on the foundation he laid.

"May the soul of Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima rest in perfect peace," the message read.

The late Galadima was a prominent figure in Nigerian football administration and community leadership, having played a significant role in the development of the sport during his tenure at the helm of the NFA.

The former NFA chairman who also held the traditional title of Galadiman Fagge, passed away on Saturday evening at a hospital in Kano. He was 78 years old.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association (NAUAA) held its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at the UNIZIK Alumni building complex in Awka.

ANSFA/NEROS 2026 FA Cup Draws To Hold This Friday In Awka

Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) has confirmed that draws for the 2026 edition of the annual ANSFA/NEROS FA Cup Competition will take place at the luxurious Mailon Hotel, Awka, on Friday, April 3rd, 2026.

Mr Ralph Nweke, Secretary of the ANSFA, disclosed that ten (10) teams will participate in this year’s club football competition.

He listed the teams as Edel FC, Peace FC, Ozalla FA, Game Changers FC and Obosi United.

Others are Rangels FA, Black Smithers FC, BONFA, Amanda FC and Emma Okeke FC.

Mr Nweke revealed that this year’s state competition will kick off on April 9th, 2026 with the final billed for April 26th, 2026 as a venue to be disclosed later.

NEROS Pharmaceuticals Ltd has been the sole sponsors of the ANSFA/NEROS FA Cup since 2007 with the competition prize money being N2million for the winner, N1million for runners-up, N500 thousand for third place team and N100 thousand for the fourth placed team.

UNIZIK VC, Prof. Anyaehie Inspects Stadium, Reaffirms Commitment To Sports Development

UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie has reaffirmed his commitment towards the development of sports in the institution.

Prof. Anyaehie stated this on Thursday, 26th March, 2026 during an inspection visit to the University's Stadium Complex already in a dilapidated state.

During the tour of the stadium complex, Prof. Anyaehie expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the facility emphasizing the need for urgent intervention to give the complex the desired facelift that will aid the growth and development of sports and recreational activities in the University.

The Chief Executive lamented that the current state of the stadium falls short of the standards expected of a leading institution known for its academic and sporting prowess. Prof. Anyaehie highlighted the importance of attracting investors and strategic partners to support the redevelopment and modernization of the stadium.

The Vice-Chancellor averred that the revitalizing of the stadium complex would not only restore its lost glory in sporting performance but also position the University as a hub for sporting excellence.

Prof. Anyaehie assured that his administration would ensure that sports thrive in the institution by creating an enabling environment for student-athletes and staff to feature and excel in Inter University Sport Competitions at the local, national and international levels.

UNIZIK: Prof. Igbokwe Highlights Importance of GEO-AI in Surveying, Disaster Management During Valedictory Lecture

A foremost Professor of Surveying and Geoinformatics, Professor Joel Izuchukwu Igbokwe has emphasized the importance of Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GEO-AI) in the field of Surveying as well as Disaster Mapping and Response in Nigeria.

This was on the occasion of his Valedictory Lecture titled, "GEO-AI for disaster mapping and response in Nigeria", held on Friday, 27th March, 2026 at the ASUU NAU Secretariat, UNIZIK.

Delivering his lecture, Prof. Igbokwe described GEO-AI as the development of computer and digital systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence such as reasoning, decision-making, problem-solving, learning and language understanding.

The scholar disclosed that AI has impacted geospatial sciences, including surveying and mapping, leading to Geo-AI which has enabled the collection, interpretation, analysis and visualization of complex spatial information. Prof. Igbokwe informed that Geo-AI presents a total transformative shift in understanding mapping and response to disasters in Nigeria by enhancing the ability to detect disasters early, mapping of rapidly impacted area, accurate assessment of damages and efficient resource allocation.

Prof. Igbokwe recommended nationwide comprehensive mapping of the country via integration of Geo-AI for disaster management, increased collaboration with the National Space Research Development Agency, increased funding for disaster mapping and creation of legal policy framework for Geo-AI utilization.

In his remarks during the Valedictory Lecture, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie described Prof. Igbokwe as a great teacher and administrator who played a key role in the growth and development of the institution for more than three decades. The VC who was represented by the Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies (CPGS), UNIZIK, Prof. Emmanuel Obidimma thanked the scholar for his professional services to the University.

The Valedictory Lecture also featured unveiling and launching of a festschrift in honour of Prof. Joel Igbokwe with the title, "The Science of Modelling and Predicting Geospatial Phenomena."

Also present during the Valedictory Lecture were the Chairman of UNIZIK Inaugural Lecture Committee, Prof. Josephat Ogbuagu; former Provost of CPGS, Director of GS Unit and Spouse of the celebrant, Engr. Anambra FA Chairman, Iloenyosi Holds Strategic Talks With Guinea-Bissau MP Nascimento on Grassroots Football Development

The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi on Tuesday, 17th March, 2026, held a high-level meeting with renowned football administrator and lawmaker, Manuel Nascimento, on the sidelines of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo's inauguration ceremony for a second term in office.

The meeting focused on strengthening grassroots football development in Anambra State and exploring sustainable funding frameworks to support youth talent discovery, competitions, and infrastructure growth.

Nascimento, Deputy Member of Parliament of Guinea-Bissau and Member of the ECOWAS Parliament, has extensive experience in football governance, having served as President of the Guinea-Bissau Football Federation and played key roles in continental and global football structures.

After the meeting, Chief Iloenyosi emphasized the importance of grassroots investment, stating, "The development of grassroots football remains a top priority for us in Anambra. We must invest in youth competitions, coaching education, and modern facilities to establish a strong football foundation."

Nascimento praised the Anambra FA leadership's vision, saying, "Strong grassroots systems are essential for national football success. When properly funded and professionally managed, they empower youth, foster unity, and create economic opportunities within the sports sector."

The meeting marks a significant step towards strengthening sports diplomacy and aligning Anambra's football development agenda with continental best practices, leveraging international expertise and partnerships to accelerate football growth from the grassroots level.
