UNIZIK Applied Microbiology Holds 4th Lecture Series, Awards Innovators, Charts Path to 2030 SDGs

The Department of Applied Microbiology and Brewing, Faculty of Biosciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Thursday, July 30, 2026, held its 4th Departmental Lecture Series and Award-Giving Ceremony.

The event, held at the College of Postgraduate Studies, CPGS, Auditorium, was themed, “From Microbes to Millennium: Microbiology Driving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.”

Declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Ugochukwu Stanley Anyaehie, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Alex Asigbo, commended the department for aligning its academic focus with national and global development targets.

Prof. Asigbo described microbiology as critical to science and the sustenance of humanity, and noted that the department was on the right path of academic excellence.

In his welcome address, the Head of Department, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwuma Okafor, said the theme was timely given microbiology’s pivotal role in health, food security, environmental sustainability, biotechnology, energy, and industrial development. He stated that scientists and educators have a responsibility to provide innovative solutions that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Dr. Okafor added that the lecture series provides a platform for intellectual exchange and collaboration, and stressed that scientific discoveries are most impactful when translated into solutions that improve lives. He also noted that the occasion was used to recognize distinguished personalities for their service, leadership, and contributions to the university and society.

The HOD appreciated the university management, faculty dean, staff, alumni, students, sponsors, and the organizing committee for their support.

Delivering the lecture, the Guest Lecturer and Professor of Medical Microbiology, Prof. Ifeoma Enweani-Nwokelo, explained the role of microorganisms in global sustainability. The University Don linked specific microbial processes to six key SDGs: SDG 2 - Zero Hunger, SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being, SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13 - Climate Action, and SDG 15 - Life on Land.

Prof. Enweani-Nwokelo also highlighted business, research and career opportunities in SDG-focused microbiology. She challenged the department to train 500 SDG-ready microbiologists, establish 5 industry-academia partnerships, commercialize one microbiology product, and institutionalize quarterly community service. Prof. Enweani-Nwokelo urged the Faculty to “teach with purpose, invest with vision, and innovate with impact,” noting that microbiologists have a responsibility to build a healthier, wealthier and sustainable Africa.

Also speaking, one of the award recipients and Acting Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University, Umunya, Prof. Cater Dike Nnamdi Umeoduagu, who received the Academic Pinnacle Award of the Year, commended the department for its commitment to teaching and research.

The Tansian University Ag. VC lauded the Department for keying into the SDGs and for producing well-groomed graduates contributing to society.

On his part, the Special Adviser (SAVC) to Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University on Waste to Wealth, Mr. Ifeanyi Lawrence Uwanta stated that Microorganisms are at the heart of achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals from ensuring food security to clean water, good health and climate action, microbes offer practical solutions.

Mr. Uwanta opined that the department has the mandate to train SDG-ready microbiologists, build industry partnerships, and translate research into products that serve our communities and in achieving this objective, it must teach with purpose and innovate with impact to build a healthier and wealthier Africa.

The high point of the event was the presentation of memorabilia to innovators, captains of industry, and academics who have supported the growth of the department.

In a vote of thanks, the Chairperson of the Lecture Series Committee, Dr. Sonia Ogbonna-Iloamachi, appreciated the guest lecturer, university management, the Dean of Biosciences, the HOD, and all guests. She urged students to apply their skills in service to humanity.

UNIZIK: DIUSCADI Distributes Food Palliatives, Holds Prayers for Students Ahead of Exams

The Digitized Initiative for Up-Skilling, Career Development and Innovation (DIUSCADI) on Thursday, July 30, 2026, distributed food palliatives to student volunteers and held a special prayer session ahead of the 2025/2026 second semester examinations.

The event, held at the Chike Okoli Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies (COCES) Auditorium, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, had over 80 student volunteers benefitting from the palliatives. Items distributed included rice, noodles, beverages, seasonings, and tomatoes.

The DIUSCADI Convener and Global President of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association (NAUAA), Prof. Ikechukwu Umeh, said the gesture was to appreciate student volunteers for their contributions to the success of DIUSCADI programmes this academic session, and to support them in having hitch-free preparations for the exams.

Prof. Umeh eulogized God for the success of LASCADSS 7.0 and commended committee heads for ensuring the programme’s success. He described DIUSCADI as a platform for all-round mentorship of UNIZIK students and fresh graduates to prepare them for life after school.

The scholar urged the students to study hard for the forthcoming examinations and to shun examination malpractice, noting that the association and the university have zero tolerance for the practice. He also encouraged them to acquire relevant skills to enable them thrive in different spheres of human endeavour.

Prof. Umeh said the palliatives were a way of appreciating the volunteers’ commitment and helping them stay in good shape mentally and physically for the exams.

In his remarks, the General Student Coordinator of DIUSCADI, UNIZIK, Chinedu Francis, said the association’s vision is to equip students and fresh graduates with the requisite skills and knowledge for life after graduation. He thanked Prof. Umeh for the philanthropic gesture and support towards ensuring the volunteers’ academic success.

The high point of the occasion was a special prayer for examination success led by Prof. Umeh and the distribution of the palliatives.

UNIZIK CPGS Holds 2026 Teachers’ Assembly, Pushes for Innovation, Digital Learning and Effective Supervision

The College of Postgraduate Studies (CPGS), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, held her one-day 2026 Postgraduate Teachers’ Assembly.

The Assembly, themed _“Reimagining Postgraduate Education: Innovative Teaching, Effective Supervision and Transformative Digital Learning,” was a convergence of all postgraduate teachers of the university.

Declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, commended CPGS for convening the timely meeting.

Prof. Anyaehie stated that the challenges of the present era, from Artificial Intelligence to economic transformation, demand that universities produce innovators and problem-solvers, not just degree holders.

The VC affirmed that reimagining the institution’s postgraduate programmes must focus on three key pillars: innovative teaching, effective supervision, and transformative digital learning.

Prof. Anyaehie reminded PG teachers that they are the gatekeepers of academic quality and assured that management would continue to support them through research funding, improved facilities, and policies that reward excellence.

In his welcome address, the Provost of CPGS, Prof. Emmanuel Obidimma, said the Assembly provided an important forum for the college’s leadership to present its annual report, which would form the basis for review and discussion.

Prof. Obidimma added that the meeting would also provide CPGS with recommendations to guide institutional growth, academic excellence, and improved student supervision.

Prof. Obidimma noted that deliberations would examine key strategic priorities, identify practical steps to strengthen programmes, and consider measures to enhance the quality of postgraduate teaching, supervision, and research output.

The Provost urged active participation, expressing hope that collective efforts would yield concrete resolutions and renewed momentum to elevate the college’s standing among the best.

Delivering the keynote address on: “Overcoming Challenges and Maximizing the Value of Online Postgraduate Studies,” the Chairman, Committee of Provosts and Deans of Colleges and Schools of Postgraduate Studies in Nigeria, Prof. Victor Dugga, said Nigerian universities by 2076 would evolve from teaching centres to localized innovation and research hubs driven by decentralized campuses, EdTech integration, and private and global competition.

Prof. Dugga outlined requirements for successful online PG studies to include good policy, the right curriculum, basic infrastructure, appropriate technology, lecturers with the right mindset, and digitally savvy and inquisitive students.

He listed benefits for lecturers to include flexibility, time saving, continuous reinforcement of content and skills, as well as real-world application of theory.

The keynote speaker identified lack of motivation, technical issues, home distractions, and poor time management as top challenges for students in online learning.

Prof. Dugga stressed that the strength and success of online programmes lie in understanding technology and upskilling for the AI era through critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and complex problem-solving.

Delivering a lecture titled: “The Conundrum of Postgraduate Supervision, Thesis Writing and Completion Rates in Postgraduate Programmes", the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, PAMO University of Medical Sciences (PUMS) Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Prof. Onyenmechi Johnson Afonne, said effective supervision provides timely feedback, maintains regular communication, guides research direction, and helps students navigate academic challenges.

Prof. Afonne noted that postgraduate programmes train students not only to understand existing knowledge, but also to create new knowledge, network, solve problems, and manage projects.

He defined key terms such as mentoring and supervision, and highlighted types of supervision including hands-on, hands-off, and learning alliance approaches.

The scholar also outlined the responsibilities of supervisors and postgraduate students, as well as students’ expectations of supervisors.

Prof. Afonne concluded that supervision is key to the timely completion of postgraduate programmes and to improving completion rates in the university. The scholar urged the university and the PG college to strengthen the supervisor-supervisee relationship to engender higher completion rates.

The Assembly also featured syndicate sessions on Innovative Teaching, Effective Supervision and Digital Learning, rapporteur reports, an evaluation session, question and answer segment, and presentation of memorabilia to resource persons.

In a vote of thanks, the Chair of the Organizing Committee and Associate Provost (Sciences) CPGS, Prof. Theresa Uzoma Onuegbu, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his support, the Provost for his leadership, and the resource persons for their insights. The scholar also appreciated the PG teachers and urged them to put all they had learnt into practice for the elevation of the PG programme at UNIZIK.

DIUSCADI Trains 1,000+ Anambra Students on Future-Ready Skills at LASCDASS 7.0

Over 1,000 undergraduate and final-year students from Anambra tertiary institutions participated in the two-day skill acquisition, digital training and career development programme organized by the Digitized Initiative for Up-skilling Career Development and Innovation (DIUSCADI).

The Life After School Career Development Seminar Series, tagged LASCDASS 7.0, was held on Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the ASUU Secretariat, UNIZIK, with the theme: “Empowering Youths With Future-Ready Skills for Sustainable Livelihoods.”

Students were drawn from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam; Federal Polytechnic Oko; Paul University, Awka and UNIZIK School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Declaring the event open on day two, the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, described the DIUSCADI initiative as a noble effort aimed at youth development.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Alex Asigbo, the VC urged youths to equip themselves with relevant skills to become employers of labour, entrepreneurs and job creators.

UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor noted that Anambra is renowned for entrepreneurship and that the university is keying into that spirit by working to formalize the “Igba Boyi” apprenticeship scheme. The VC assured DIUSCADI of his administration’s support in empowering youths and young school leavers.

In his address, the DIUSCADI Convener, Prof. Ikechukwu Umeh, said the vision of the initiative is to prepare young people not just to graduate, but to excel in life, create value, lead with integrity and contribute meaningfully to society.

Prof. Umeh stated that when young people possess relevant skills, embrace innovation and cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset, they become problem solvers, employers of labour, responsible leaders and catalysts for national transformation.

The DIUSCADI Convener disclosed that LASCDASS 7.0 offered training in Cyber Security and Data Analysis; Blockchain Technology; Career Development; Computer Maintenance and ICT Support; Digital Marketing; Confectionery; Agribusiness; Paint Production; Solar and CCTV Installation; Fashion Designing and Digital Skills.

Prof. Umeh commended the panelists, sponsors, partners and facilitators, and urged participants to put the knowledge gained into action with courage, resilience and integrity.

A major highlight was a panel discussion on, “Building Sustainable Livelihoods through Skills, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in a Digital Economy.” It featured the Anambra State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba; UNIZIK SAVC on ICT, Prof. Ikechukwu Onyenwe; Engr. Chito Onwuzulike and Mr. Chinecherem Oguegbe. The session was moderated by Dr. Chika Nnabuife.

Other highlights included the installation and decoration of DIUSCADI patrons — the UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, and Youth Development Advocate, Mr. Chinedu Moses Obi — a youth innovation showcase, LASCDASS impact report, award presentations, a raffle draw and presentation of two laptop computers to two outstanding student participants.

Rotary Club Awka GRA Honours Prof. Ufoaroh with Award of Excellence for Community Service

The Rotary Club of Awka GRA, Anambra State, has honoured Engr. Professor Uchenna Ufoaroh, President-General of Ifitedunu Community and former ASUU Chairman, UNIZIK, with an Award of Excellence for Community Service.

The award was presented to Prof. Ufoaroh during the installation ceremony of the 25th President of the club, Rotarian Engr. Christopher Ewah, held at Milatel Hotel and Suites, Awka, on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

Responding after receiving the award, Prof. Ufoaroh thanked the Rotary Club for the honour, describing it as a charge and encouragement to do more in community service for Ifitedunu, UNIZIK, his local government area and humanity at large.

The PG of Ifitedunu noted that the award was the second he was receiving from the Awka GRA chapter and the third from Rotary Club. The scholar said the recognition has spurred him to consider joining the club and urged the President to formalize his membership. Prof. Ufoaroh also called on the club to sustain its values, goals and aspirations.

In a related development, the Ifitedunu Students’ Union, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) branch also celebrated Prof. Ufoaroh by presenting him with a special portrait in recognition of his outstanding leadership, dedication to education and invaluable contributions to the growth of Ifitedunu students and the community.

The highpoint of the occasion was the official acceptance of Prof. Ufoaroh’s membership into the Rotary Club of Awka GRA, performed by the Traditional Ruler of Ifitedunu Community, HRH Igwe Dr. Emeka Ilouno.

UNIZIK WADA Club Marks 2026 World Drug Day with Call for Prevention, Innovation

The War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Club of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Friday, July 24, 2026, held a colourful commemoration of the 2026 World Drug Day.

The event, marked annually on June 26 globally, was held at the Zephaniah Madubuko Auditorium, Faculty of Social Sciences, UNIZIK, with the theme, “World Drug Problems: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.”

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and MD/CEO of PAX Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Pharm. Uche Apakama, described drug abuse as a societal menace that requires sustained sensitization beyond higher institutions.

Pharm. Apakama said the World Drug Day commemoration serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of drugs on society and the lives ruined by substance abuse. He noted that the aim of the programme was to create awareness on the need for intervention and collective effort by stakeholders to build a drug-free society.

Declaring the event open, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, said the annual observance of International Drug Day is aimed at raising global awareness about the devastating impact of drug abuse on physical and psychological health, often leading to fatalities and damage to national economies.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Hilda Osisioma, the VC reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to raising awareness on the dangers of drug abuse for the wellbeing of staff and students.

Delivering the commemoration lecture, the Guest Lecturer and Head of the Department of Psychology, Prof. Chidozie Nwafor, said drug and substance abuse remains a persisting issue driven by supply, demand and harm. He noted that substance use disorders are still treated largely as criminal issues rather than health issues in many countries, resulting in stigma, poor treatment access, and cycles of relapse.

Prof. Nwafor added that the landscape is shifting with synthetic drugs now the deadliest threat due to their low cost of production, ease of trafficking, and role in driving record overdose rates. The HOD of UNIZIK Psychology Department said countries are adopting innovative responses by moving from punishment to prevention and treatment. The scholar disclosed that technology is also playing a key role, with Artificial Intelligence being used to track trafficking routes and detect synthetic drugs, while telehealth and digital platforms are expanding access to treatment and recovery support.

The Assistant State Commander, NDLEA Anambra State, Chris Adabo, said drug abuse is not just a health issue but a threat to peace, development and the future of youths. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach that promotes peace, inclusive development and protects human rights.

Other speakers included the representative of the Anambra State Director of the Department of State Services, Mike Okeke; a representative of the Nigeria Police Force; and the Secretary of Organizing Committee, Mrs. Urenna Okamgba.

In a vote of thanks, the President of UNIZIK WADA Club, Dr. Alexander Orji, commended participants and urged sustained efforts in the fight against drug abuse to ensure a drug-free environment.

Highpoints of the event included the inauguration of WADA student faculty representatives, presentation of the VC’s trophy to undergraduate students of the institution who emerged winners of the quiz competition, and awards to individuals who have distinguished themselves in the campaign against drug abuse.

DIUSCADI Kicks Off 2-Day Skills, Digital Training for Anambra Tertiary Institution Students

The Digitized Initiative for Up-skilling Career Development and Innovation (DIUSCADI) on Friday, July 24, 2026, commenced the seventh edition of its Life After School Career Development Seminar Series, tagged LASCDASS 7.0.

The two-day skill acquisition, digital training and career development workshop is holding at the ASUU NAU Secretariat, UNIZIK, with the theme, “Empowering Youths With Future-Ready Skills for Sustainable Livelihoods.”

Day one featured an introduction to skills tracks, orientation for hands-on sessions, boot camp sessions with participants in parallel practical workshops, an entrepreneurship masterclass, as well as a skills showcase and innovation pitch.

Over 1,000 final-year and undergraduate students from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam; Federal Polytechnic Oko; Paul University, Awka and UNIZIK School of Pharmaceutical Sciences are participating.

Declaring the event open, the Convener of DIUSCADI and Head of the Department of Information and Communication Technology, Prof. Ikechukwu Umeh, said the mission of DIUSCADI is to equip young people with the skills, knowledge, values, innovation and entrepreneurial mindset needed to thrive in a competitive and technology-driven world.

Prof. Umeh noted that while a university degree remains valuable, employers and clients today seek individuals who can solve problems, think creatively, communicate effectively and continuously improve themselves.

The scholar disclosed that LASCDASS 7.0 offers training in diverse fields including Cyber Security and Data Analysis; Blockchain Technology; Career Development; Computer Maintenance and ICT Support; Digital Marketing; Confectionery; Agribusiness; Paint Production; Solar and CCTV Installation; Fashion Designing and Digital Skills.

The DIUSCADI Convener urged participants to maximize the opportunity and commended facilitators and resource persons for investing their expertise in developing the next generation of innovators, professionals and entrepreneurs.

Day two of LASCDASS 7.0 will feature the installation of DIUSCADI patrons, with nominees including the UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, and Youth Development Advocate, Mr. Chinedu Moses Obi.

Other activities slated for day two include a panel discussion, youth innovation showcase, LASCDASS impact report, awards and special recognitions.

Hon. Nwankwo Tasks Engineers To Drive Economic Growth Through Agripreneurship, Oil & Gas Innovation

Hon. Chief Dozie Ferdinand Nwankwo, Chairman of the occasion at the 2026 UNIZIK Engineering Faculty Lecture Series and APGA Candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, has called on Nigerian engineers to practicalize their training and lead economic sustainability through agripreneurship and value innovation in the oil and gas sector.

Speaking on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at the ASUU Secretariat, UNIZIK, during the Faculty’s annual Lecture Series themed, “Engineering Pathways to Economic Sustainability: Unlocking Opportunities in Agripreneurship, Oil, Gas and Beyond”, Nwankwo described engineers as nation builders and wealth creators.

Hon. Nwankwo said; “I am not an Engineer, but I had the basic knowledge, passion, and ideas that got me to where I am today.

“We have to practicalize this by showing what we have and showcasing our competence. Let us be producers for the nation. Encourage the students to work hard as they are the driving engines of economic development", Hon. Nwankwo stated.

Hon. Nwankwo fondly known as Onye Ndozi stressed that Nigeria’s economic future depends on engineers moving beyond theory to manufacturing and problem-solving. He said the country must reduce overdependence on imported goods by leveraging engineering expertise to produce locally and create jobs for graduates. He commended UNIZIK for promoting technical education and urged tertiary institutions to align engineering curricula with industry needs to address infrastructure deficit and unemployment.

On the oil and gas sector, Nwankwo said engineers must drive value innovation in an industry that remains the backbone of Nigeria’s economy. The sector contributes over 80% of export revenue and foreign exchange earnings, and about 60% of total government income. He noted that reforms and technological adoption are critical to reversing production decline and attracting investment.

The APGA chieftain further highlighted agripreneurship as a key pathway for diversification with agriculture accounting for about 20 percent of Nigeria’s resources, he said engineers have a duty to design machines, processing systems, and value chains that reduce post-harvest losses and connect farmers to markets. He stressed that real wealth in agriculture will be captured by those who process locally and cut waste.

Hon. Nwankwo concluded by pledging support for initiatives that strengthen engineering education and local content.

Nwankwo called on policymakers, industry, and academia to collaborate in funding research, establishing enterprise incubation centers, and creating an enabling environment for engineers to thrive.

The Lecture Series also featured awards of excellence to distinguished stakeholders.

TETFund, NUC Conclude 3-Day Entrepreneurship Training for UNIZIK Lecturers

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), in collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC), on Thursday, July 23, 2026, concluded a three-day training workshop for teaching staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The workshop, themed, “Teaching Entrepreneurship Using Effectuation”, was held at the auditorium of the College of Postgraduate Studies (CPGS), UNIZIK and attracted over 100 lecturers.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, charged participants to maximize the training by impacting students through entrepreneurship education.

Represented by the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Angela Ufele-Obiesie, the VC described entrepreneurship as critical to capacity building and to empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs for national development. The Vice-Chancellor commended TETFund and NUC for the initiative aimed at strengthening the competence of university scholars in teaching entrepreneurship using effectuation.

The Key Facilitator, Dr. Ifeanyi Nuel Okoli of the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, UNIZIK, described the training as engaging, educative and impactful.

Dr. Okoli said quizzes and assignments showed that the teaching staff demonstrated dedication and commitment throughout the programme. He noted that enterprise entrepreneurship is here to stay, and will create jobs and drive societal development. The Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences urged lecturers to cascade the knowledge gained to students across various disciplines.

Responding on behalf of the participants, Dr. Nneka Ogbuagu, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering, thanked UNIZIK, TETFund and NUC for the opportunity.

The scholar affirmed that the trainees are now fully equipped to teach entrepreneurship studies and transfer the knowledge to students.

Activities on the final day included lectures on Effectuation, Value Creator Mindset, Artificial Intelligence, and Creativity. The highpoint was the presentation of certificates of participation to the teaching staff, followed by a photo session with trainers and trainees.

Also in attendance were the Director of TETFund, UNIZIK, Rev. Fr. Prof. Ikenga Kenneth Oraegbunam, and the second resource person, Dr. Mohammed Nura Ibrahim Naala of the Department of Business Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

UNIZIK Engineering Faculty Hosts 2026 Lecture Series, Calls for Innovation in Agripreneurship and Oil & Gas

The Faculty of Engineering, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Thursday, July 23, 2026, held its annual Lecture Series at the ASUU Secretariat, UNIZIK.

The Lecture Series, themed, “Engineering Pathways to Economic Sustainability: Unlocking Opportunities in Agripreneurship, Oil, Gas and Beyond”, brought together policymakers, industry leaders, public administrators and education stakeholders.

In his address, the Chairman of the occasion and APGA Candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, Hon. Chief Dozie Nwankwo, described engineers as nation builders and wealth creators.

“I am not an Engineer, but I had the basic knowledge, passion, and ideas that got me to where I am today,” he said.

Hon. Nwankwo urged engineers to practicalize their training by showcasing their competence and producing goods for the nation. He described engineering as the driving engine of economic development.

Declaring the Lecture Series open, the UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, commended the Faculty for choosing a theme critical to societal growth and national development.

Prof. Anyaehie said engineering remains pivotal to his administration. He disclosed that the institution is constructing the first virtual engineering laboratory in Africa and is working to secure the license for its launch. He also appreciated experts in oil and gas as well as agripreneurs for attending the event.

In her keynote address, the Secretary to the Anambra State Government, Hon. Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake, said engineers must create value to build the sector and drive national development. She stressed that adequate funding is needed for Nigeria to address its infrastructure deficit.

Hon. Nnake noted that engineering is about problem solving and optimizing available resources. She added that agripreneurship is a direct response to Nigeria’s pressing needs, with agriculture accounting for about 20 percent of the nation’s resources. She urged engineers to tackle challenges in machine design and other areas to support agripreneurship.

She further stated that the oil and gas sector, as Nigeria’s main source of revenue, must be driven by value re-engineering. “Engineers need to focus on value innovation for the oil and gas sector,” Hon. Nnake said.

In his remarks, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, UNIZIK, Engr. Prof. Ugochukwu Chuka Okonkwo, said the theme was timely as Nigeria grapples with food security and energy security.

“Engineers are trained to solve problems. The engineer of 2026 must be versatile, entrepreneurial, and solution-driven,” Prof. Okonkwo stated.

The Dean noted that the Faculty currently has 11 departments, with 5 additional programmes awaiting full departmental status. Prof. Okonkwo attributed the expansion to the quality of training and high demand for engineering education at UNIZIK. The scholar expressed optimism that the Lecture Series would generate new ideas, opportunities, and pathways to a sustainable economy.

Delivering a lecture on agripreneurship, the CEO of Huge Technology, Chief Benedict Chukwuma Ibekie, said Nigeria’s agricultural sector will continue to feed the nation, but real wealth will be captured by those who reduce waste, process locally, and connect farmers to markets.

“The future of Nigeria’s economy will be built by engineers who design better systems and commercialize their research,” Chief Ibekie said.

He called on the Faculty to establish a Faculty-wide Engineering Enterprise Incubation Centre and to mandate a practical enterprise component in every curriculum.

Also speaking, a foremost oil and gas expert, Hon. Chief Johnbosco Onunkwo, described engineering professionals as “the fathers of all professions” because engineers are developers with unlimited opportunities.

Chief Onunkwo said society needs engineers, and the profession must be strengthened through quality education and adequate funding. He commended the Faculty for its commitment to teaching, research, and community service.

The Lecture Series also featured the presentation of awards of excellence to policymakers, industry leaders, public administrators, and education stakeholders for their contributions to the energy and agricultural sectors.

Dr. Okoli Urges UNIZIK Lecturers to Integrate Enterprise Skills into Teaching for Non-Business Students

Dr. Ifeanyi Nuel Okoli, Key Facilitator at the 3-day TETFund training programme in collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC), has called on lecturers to embed entrepreneurship and enterprise education across all disciplines at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Dr. Okoli, a lecturer in the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, UNIZIK, made the call on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, while delivering a lecture titled, “Entrepreneurship for Non-Business Students: Framing Pedagogy and Praxis”, at the opening ceremony of the training workshop for teaching staff. The programme is holding at the UNIZIK College of Postgraduate Studies (CPGS) auditorium.

The scholar noted that high-growth ventures are more commonly founded by graduates of Engineering, STEM, Creative Arts, and Humanities than by business graduates.

According to him, enterprise capability is useful for every discipline because enterprise education enhances motivation, deep learning and employability.

Drawing a distinction between the two concepts, Dr. Okoli explained that Enterprise Education focuses on generating ideas and developing the behaviors and competencies to turn them into action, while Entrepreneurship Education focuses on starting and growing ventures.

The current Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, UNIZIK, further highlighted what makes enterprise education effective for non-business students and provided insights on the role of educators in promoting the teaching of entrepreneurship across faculties.

In his second lecture on “Effectuation,” Dr. Okoli took participants through the five core principles: Bird-in-Hand Principle, Affordable Loss Principle, Crazy Quilt Principle, Lemonade Principle, and Pilot-in-the-Plane Principle.

The training, organized by TETFund in collaboration with NUC, is targeting over 100 teaching staff of UNIZIK from the rank of Senior Lecturer and below.

Also in attendance on the opening day were the UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, represented by the Director of Academic Planning (DAP), Prof. Angela Ufele-Obiesie; the TETFund Director, UNIZIK and member of the Governing Council, Rev. Fr. Prof. Ikenga Kenneth Oraegbunam; as well as Dr. Mohammed Nura Ibrahim Naala of the Department of Business Administration, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State.

TETFund, NUC Train 100 UNIZIK Lecturers on Entrepreneurship Using Effectuation

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC) has commenced a 3-day training workshop for over 100 lecturers of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on teaching entrepreneurship using effectuation.

The programme, which opened on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, is holding at the auditorium of the College of Postgraduate Studies (CPGS), UNIZIK, and will run through Thursday, July 23, 2026.

Declaring the workshop open, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, said the training is designed to equip teaching staff to effectively deliver entrepreneurship courses including ENT 211, a first-semester, 200-level course, and ENT 312, a second-semester, 300-level course.

The Vice-Chancellor who represented by the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Angela Ufele-Obiesie, noted that the University had requested NUC’s support for staff training, leading to TETFund organizing the workshop. The VC said participants were drawn from the rank of Senior Lecturer and below across departments.

Prof. Anyaehie urged the trainees to take the sessions seriously in order to impact students positively.

In his address, the TETFund Director, UNIZIK, Rev. Fr. Prof. Ikenga Kenneth Oraegbunam, described the workshop as critical for staff development. The UNIZIK TETFund Director said while the current phase targets teaching staff, a similar training for non-teaching staff is being planned.

Also a member of the University’s Governing Council, Rev. Fr. Prof. Oraegbunam stated that the TETFund-NUC collaboration is aimed at strengthening teaching capacity with a ripple effect on students. The scholar disclosed that two lecturers were selected from each department for the training and charged participants to maximize the opportunity.

The Key Facilitator, Dr. Ifeanyi Nuel Okoli of the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, UNIZIK, said the training is to empower lecturers of entrepreneurship and non-business disciplines to teach students the five core principles of effectuation: Bird-in-Hand, Affordable Loss, Crazy Quilt, Lemonade and Pilot-in-the-Plane principles.

Dr. Okoli added that the programme is part of a national rollout that will run until December and target 136 universities in the first phase. He commended UNIZIK management for providing an enabling environment towards the success of the programme.

Also speaking, the second resource person, Dr. Mohammed Nura Ibrahim Naala of the Department of Business Administration, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, said the training focuses on teaching students how to plan, organize, and manage resources effectively. Dr. Naala explained that effectuation teaches students to leverage available resources to create new ventures which is a clear departure from conventional management-oriented teaching.

Day 1 of the workshop covered Foundation, Mindset and the Bird-in-Hand Principle. Facilitators took participants through Pedagogical Principles of Teaching Entrepreneurship to Non-Business Students, Effectuation Background and Principles, Peer Means Discovery, Padlet Board Exercise, Quiz, and the Nils Bergqvist case study.

Day 2 will focus on Action Under Uncertainty, while Day 3 will cover topics on Effectuation, Value Creator Mindset, Artificial Intelligence, and Creativity.

Prof. Okolie Assures Academic Standards Won't Drop at UNIZIK Pre-Degree Centre

The Director of the Pre-Degree Programme at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Engr. Prof. Paul Okolie, says the university has built a cordial relationship with the Mbaukwu community to ensure safety and smooth academic operations at the programme’s study centre.

Speaking during an interview with Journalists at his office, Prof. Okolie, who is also a member of the UNIZIK Governing Council, said the centre now works closely with the community vigilance group in addition to its own security structure.

"Before I came on board, we heard reports of students’ phones being stolen. Under my watch, that has not happened. We have a very cordial relationship with the community," Prof. Okolie said.

The Director noted that the influx of about 2,000 Pre-Degree and JUPEB students to the centre from September will bring economic benefits to Mbaukwu.

The scholar assured
the university community that academic standards at the centre will not drop but will improve. According to him, many Pre-Degree students have already scored above 300 in JAMB.

"JAMB does not recognize Pre-Degree, so our students must still meet the national cut-off. They are also required to score at least 200 in the Pre-Degree exams to qualify for admission into UNIZIK. The evidence so far shows we are on the right track," Prof. Okolie assured.

The Pre-Degree Director said the recent approval for JUPEB to commence at Mbaukwu, the improved infrastructure and better welfare for lecturers were all aimed at creating a conducive learning environment.

"Once the environment is conducive, learning is achieved. I believe we are building that environment," he added.

The Mbaukwu centre, established to run UNIZIK’s Pre-Degree programme, is expected to begin academic activities for JUPEB students in September 2026.

UNIZIK Pre-Degree Director, Prof. Okolie, Drives Transformation at Centre With Solar Powered Classrooms, New Facilities

The Pre-Degree Study Centre of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, at Mbaukwu has undergone significant transformation in the last one year, with the installation of solar-powered infrastructure and new student facilities.

Director of the Pre-Degree Programme, Engr. Prof. Paul Okolie, who disclosed this during an interview in Awka, said the intervention has ended years of learning difficulties at the centre.

Prof. Okolie, who assumed office on June 3, 2025, under the then Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, said he met a centre grappling with poor power supply, inadequate conveniences and lack of kitchen facilities.

"Students could not attend night classes because the area had no streetlights. Some were cooking inside hostels because there was no kitchen. The conveniences were also not enough," Prof. Okolie said.

The Professor of Mechanical Engineering and a member of the Governing Council noted that he made formal requests to management for a kitchen, additional conveniences, solar lighting, fencing of hostels for security and solar power for classrooms. The requests, he said, received approval from the then Acting VC.

"Today, under my watch, we have 100 solar-powered streetlights illuminating the entire compound, solar lighting installed in classrooms to enable night reading, a newly constructed kitchen, and new conveniences for both staff and students," Prof. Okolie stated.

He added that the centre also now has water reticulation with shower facilities and flushing water closets, a development he said has greatly improved hygiene and comfort for students.

The Director further disclosed that his administration has digitalized the application process for admission into the Pre-Degree programme to make it faster and more accessible for applicants.

On staff welfare, Prof. Okolie said teachers’ honoraria have been increased, while wages for casual workers have also been improved to boost morale and productivity.

The scholar added that the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, further approved solar-powered systems with inverters for two large classrooms to enable night reading and charging of devices.

Prof. Okolie also disclosed that the university has approved the take-off of the JUPEB programme at the Mbaukwu centre this September, describing it as a major milestone.

With both Pre-Degree and JUPEB students expected to bring the population at the centre to about 2,000, the Director expressed optimism that the upgrade will improve academic performance and benefit the host community.

UNIZIK, Kigali Independent University Seal Academic Partnership Deal

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kigali Independent University (ULK) Rwanda, to expand joint teaching, research and student exchange programmes across Africa.

The virtual signing ceremony held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, formalized a draft agreement first drawn up in April. The pact sets the foundation for both universities to work together in STEM, Education, Humanities, Management and the Social Sciences.

Speaking during the ceremony, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, said the partnership aligns with the university’s drive to strengthen global academic ties and boost research output. He was joined by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Alex Asigbo; University Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke; University Librarian, Prof. Jacinta Eze and Director of International Collaboration and Linkages, Prof. Charles Nwadigwe.

Prof. Anyaehie gave an overview of UNIZIK’s academic programmes, campuses and affiliate institutions, noting that the collaboration with ULK will open new opportunities for knowledge exchange and capacity building on the continent.

For ULK, the MoU was signed by Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Martins Onyekwelu Onuorah.

Under the agreement, both institutions will co-host conferences, workshops, seminars, exhibitions and short professional courses. They will also exchange academic publications, develop joint curricula, and pursue collaborative research aimed at addressing societal challenges.

Other key provisions include exchange of faculty and administrative staff, undergraduate and postgraduate student exchange, joint supervision of Masters and PhD research, and cultural exchange programmes.

To manage the partnership, each university will appoint an MoU Coordinator. Regular review meetings will be held to track progress and explore new areas of cooperation. The agreement also protects intellectual property arising from joint research and does not place any direct financial obligation on either institution. Both schools, however, can seek grants and external funding to support joint projects.

The MoU will run for an initial period of five years and may be renewed by mutual agreement. It also includes provisions for amicable resolution of disputes.

Prof. Anyaehie described the deal as another step in UNIZIK’s internationalization agenda, adding that it will enhance academic mobility and innovation for staff and students.

ULK’s Prof. Onuorah said the university looks forward to leveraging UNIZIK’s expertise to strengthen teaching and research in Rwanda and across East Africa.

With this agreement, UNIZIK adds ULK to its growing list of international partners as the university pushes to position itself as a hub for collaborative research and cross-border education in Africa.

Defending champions, Fegge All Stars, defeated Holy Spirit All Stars FC 2-1 in the opening match of the 2026 Chakapain Anambra State All Stars Competition on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the Awka City Stadium.

Moses Akazojie’s goal in the 9th minute and Emmanuel Chimeobi’s superb finish gave Fegge All Stars the lead, while Amaechi Ofojede’s brilliant strike in the 67th minute was not enough to earn Holy Spirit All Stars a point.

A total of 25 All Stars clubs are participating in the 2026 edition of the competition, bankrolled by Chief Patrick Onwuelingo, Chairman/CEO of Patricklingo Pharmaceutical Company Ltd.

Declaring the competition open, the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, who was represented by the Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, ANSFA, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, commended Patricklingo Pharmaceutical Ltd for sponsoring the competition aimed at uniting ex-professional footballers above the age of 40 years and promoting healthy living through sports.

Anambra Sports Commission Joins NOC Sports Medicine Seminar, Pledges Better Healthcare For Athletes

The Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to improved healthcare delivery for athletes following its participation in the Olympic Solidarity/Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Sports Medicine Seminar Course in Edo State.

The three-day seminar, held from Monday, June 22 to Wednesday, June 25, 2026, was organized by Olympic Solidarity and the NOC Medical and Scientific Commission under the theme, “Fueling the Female Champion: Understanding the Female Athlete Triad and RED-S in Adolescent Athletes.”

Representing Anambra State at the intensive capacity-building programme were Mrs. Ngozi Nwegwu, Chief Nurse of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, and Favour Nnagbo also of the Commission.

The seminar brought together 12 facilitators, 77 participants on-site and 20 online. Delegates were drawn from sports medicine, physiotherapy, nutrition, psychology, coaching, anti-doping and sports administration across Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun and other states.

Speaking on behalf of the Anambra delegation, Mrs. Ngozi Nwegwu thanked Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo for his continued support towards the medical line in the state.

She also eulogized the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, for his support in ensuring the Commission’s participation in the seminar and appreciated the ASSDC Director, Mr. Emeka Obidimma, for his leadership.

The seminar concluded with a renewed commitment to promote safer, healthier and more empowering sporting environments for female athletes across Nigeria.

The NOC, Olympic Solidarity and the NOC Medical and Scientific Commission were commended for prioritizing female athlete health, welfare and empowerment.

Olympic Day Walk: Sports Boss, Agha Mba Rallies Ndi Anambra in Awka

Sports-loving residents of Anambra State on Saturday, July 11, 2026, trooped out in large numbers to participate in this year’s Olympic Day Walk.

The Anambra edition of the global event was organized by the State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development under the leadership of the Commissioner, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba.

The walk, which commenced at 7:00 am from the ABS gate, saw over 500 persons walk in solidarity with the Olympic Movement through the expressway to the Awka City Stadium. The exercise culminated in an aerobics session to round off the day’s activities.

Describing the event, Mr. Agha Mba said Olympic Day Celebration is a global event commemorating the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on June 23, 1894. He noted that the event promotes the values of the Olympic Movement through its three pillars: Move, Learn and Discover.

Addressing the gathering at the stadium, Mr. Agha Mba described the day as special, noting that it is celebrated across Nigeria and the world to promote the Olympic spirit and values of unity, togetherness, physical fitness, and sporting excellence.

He commended Ndi Anambra for the massive turnout and conveyed the assurance of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR, that "Anambra is in for better days."

Mr. Agha Mba also eulogized Gov. Soludo for the completion of the ultra-modern Ekwulobia Township Stadium, with other facilities including the Country Club, stating that the facility will further enhance sports participation and meaningfully engage the youth through sports.

The Commissioner assured that the Olympic Day Walk would not be a one-off event, pledging that the Ministry would continue to hold it regularly to promote grassroots sports, healthy living, physical fitness, respect and strong values.

Also speaking, a representative of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) and veteran sports journalist, Jennifer Okoye, praised participants for joining the commemoration. She said the Olympic Day is aimed at promoting the Olympic spirit and encouraging healthy living among citizens.

The high point of the event was the presentation of Certificates of Participation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to participants.

UNIZIK, EMENITE Partner to Boost Practical Training for Architecture Students

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka is deepening its industry-academia link with EMENITE Company Limited, Enugu, to expose Architecture students to modern building technologies through a planned Product Seminar for Young Specifiers.

Representatives of EMENITE and scholars from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Environmental Sciences of the institution visited the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, to brief him on the initiative and seek institutional support.

Receiving the delegation, Prof. Anyaehie commended the partnership, saying it aligns with UNIZIK’s goal of producing graduates who combine academic excellence with practical industry skills. The VC stressed that university-industry collaborations are vital for innovation, research, and graduate employability.

In her remarks, the Head of Department of Architecture, Dr. Lynda Chinwendu Mbadugha, said the seminar will introduce students to emerging trends, innovative design concepts, and best practices, with focus on EMENITE’s roofing and building products. She noted that the engagement will help bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice.

The Vice-Chancellor also urged EMENITE to support the University by renovating the roof of Garba Square with its products. He said the project would showcase the durability of the company’s materials while giving the brand visibility through proper signage.

VC Prof. Anyaehie Pledges to Clear UNIZIK Salary Backlog, Says Payroll Resolution Imminent

In a renewed commitment to staff welfare, the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Awka, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has promised to ensure total resolution of the unpaid salary issue affecting some staff employed in 2019 and 2020.

The assurance was given on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, when a delegation of the affected staff paid him an appreciation visit at his office. The group said the visit was to acknowledge the progress made under his leadership, which has already led to the commencement of salary payments for part of the affected workforce.

Mrs. Kenechukwu Jane Ejim, who spoke for the delegation, praised the Vice-Chancellor’s proactive steps and steadfast commitment. According to her, his interventions have restored hope to many families that had waited for years in uncertainty. She, however, urged the administration not to relent until the last set of unpaid staff are captured on the university payroll.

In his response, Prof. Anyaehie expressed gratitude for the visit and commended the staff for their patience and resilience. He noted that the challenge was inherited by his administration, but remains a key priority on his agenda.

The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that arrangements are already in motion to onboard another batch of the affected staff onto the payroll. He stressed that his goal is to achieve 100% inclusion of all eligible staff into the university’s salary structure, and that efforts are ongoing to bring the matter to a permanent close.

The visit ended on a celebratory note with the presentation of an appreciation plaque to the Vice-Chancellor, followed by jubilation from the delegation over the progress recorded so far.

Sports Commissioner, Agha Mba Congratulates Iloenyosi on Re-Election as ANSFA Chairman

Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, Honourable Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, has congratulated Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi on his resounding re-election as Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, ANSFA, describing the victory as a vote of confidence in his first-term record.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, the Honourable Commissioner said the result affirms the “incredible milestones, transparency, and grassroots football transformation” recorded under Iloenyosi’s leadership.

“Your victory is not just a testament to your visionary leadership, but a clear affirmation of the progress recorded during your first tenure,” Agha Mba stated.

He added that Iloenyosi has lived up to his moniker, “The General,” by leading the charge to revive football across Anambra’s 21 LGAs.

The Commissioner noted that the Ministry, under Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has enjoyed a robust partnership with ANSFA. Together, they have created new pathways for youth to thrive through sports.

“As you step into this new chapter, we are confident that your experience, passion, and love for football will take Anambra sports to even greater heights,” Agha Mba said.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to collaborate with ANSFA to deliver the government’s “Solution Bigger Agenda” for youth and sports development.

Iloenyosi is expected to build on existing programs with renewed focus on school sports, talent discovery, and strengthening local leagues.

Iloenyosi Re-elected Unopposed as ANSFA Chairman

Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi has been re-elected as Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) at the association’s elective congress held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

Iloenyosi secured a second term unopposed, polling all 23 votes from the 23 accredited delegates in a seamless exercise.

In the contest for Vice-Chairman, Johnson Ifejika defeated incumbent Sir Victor Aniekwena with 19 votes to 4.

Other elected board members include Obi Moneke and Ralph Chidozie George for Anambra Central Zone. For Anambra North Zone, Michael Igbeke and Emmanuel Azubuike Okeke emerged victorious. Anambra South Zone will be represented by Prince Michael Mbaezue, Donatus Ezeokafor, and Pastor Ijeoma Nwosu, a retired FIFA-badged referee.

ASUU Owerri Zone Decries Delay in 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement at COOU, IMSU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri Zone, has decried the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement in Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) Igbariam and Imo State University (IMSU) Owerri more than five months after the agreement took effect.

The union made the disclosure on Monday, 29th June 2026, during a press conference held at ASUU NAU Secretariat, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Addressing journalists, the Zonal Coordinator, Comrad Dennis Aribodor, said the agreement is yet to be implemented in the two state-owned universities under the zone, notably COOU owned by the Anambra State Government and IMSU owned by the Imo State Government.

Comrade Aribodor noted that branches of ASUU in both universities submitted the 2025 agreement to their respective administrations in February 2026, in line with the directive of the National Executive Council of ASUU. The Union leader added that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had earlier communicated the agreement to the Visitors of the two universities and their Vice-Chancellors for implementation.

According to him, despite engagements with university authorities, governing councils and administrations, implementation has not commenced in COOU and IMSU. He described the situation as “bad and sad” for the university system.

The Zonal Coordinator lamented that while several state universities including those owned by Bauchi, Benue, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun and Sokoto states have begun implementation, Anambra and Imo states are yet to do so.

ASUU Owerri Zone therefore called on well-meaning Nigerians, traditional and religious institutions, civil society organisations, parents, students, and other stakeholders to prevail on the Anambra and Imo State Governors to commence implementation of the agreement to sustain industrial harmony.

“Continued delay of the implementation serves no useful purpose and only aggravates industrial tension within the affected universities. ASUU Owerri Zone cannot continue to watch while our members in state universities are subjected to poor welfare conditions. Injury to one is injury to all! A stitch in time saves nine,” Aribodor said.

In their separate remarks, the Chairpersons of ASUU-COOU, Comrade Bruno Ibekilo, and ASUU-IMSU, Comrade Stephen Oguji, urged the state governments to act promptly and address the welfare concerns of their members.

Anambra Youth Commissioner Wins ‘Best Commissioner in Nigeria’ at National Leadership Awards

The Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Agha Mba, has been named the ‘Best Commissioner in Nigeria’ at the National Leadership Awards.

The award was presented to him on Thursday, 25th June 2026, during the ceremony held at the Maitama Event Centre, Abuja.

In his remarks after receiving the award, Mba thanked the organizers for the recognition. He dedicated the award to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo for his visionary and youth-friendly leadership.

Mba noted that under Gov. Soludo’s administration, youth development has been placed at the centre of the Anambra Transformational Agenda. He said the initiative reflects the governor’s unwavering commitment to building a prosperous and productive future for Anambra youths through programmes that raise youthpreneurs, tech professionals, and sports professionals.

Anambra Football Coaches Hail Performance Analysis Workshop as Educative, Innovative

Football coaches, managers, and administrators in Anambra State have described the two-day Sports Performance Analysis Workshop as educative, enriching, and innovative.

The stakeholders made the remarks on Saturday, 27th June 2026, at the Archbishop Obiefuna Pastoral and Retreat Centre, Okpuno, Awka. The workshop was organized by the Anambra State Football Coaches Association (ANSFOCA) in collaboration with Binary Sports Tech and the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA).

A total of 44 participants, including professional coaches, scouts, and managers, attended the programme. Facilitators were Dr. Isah Ladan Bosso, President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association; Mr. Idris Okeke, Founder of Binary Sports and expert in sports performance analysis; and Mr. Buhari Yusuf Makusidi, Lead Consultant at Binary Sports.

In his address, ANSFA Chairman, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, said the workshop was designed to build the capacity of coaches and scouts in the state after the Level 1 edition held last year. He described it as a step in the right direction to align Anambra coaches with global best practices.

Iloenyosi urged participants to maximize the opportunity to improve their competences and capabilities. He also thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for creating an enabling environment for football development in Anambra owing to adequate security architecture while also commending the Honourable Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Patrick Agha Mba for his visionary step in transforming the sports sector in the state.

Speaking to journalists, ANSFA Board Member and Technical Director of Dynamic Sports Academy, Aguluzigbo, Donatus Ezeokafor, described the workshop as unique and informative. He said it equipped him with knowledge on recent trends in coaching and methodologies for building competitive teams.

Coach Chuks Ndigwe, Head Coach of Oriental FC Awka, said the training enriched him with modern tactics and models. “Football has gone scientific. I will apply the knowledge gained to help my team achieve greater heights,” he stated.

Also speaking, Coach Emmanuel Azubuike Okeke of DOSAD FA, Enugwu-Ukwu, said the workshop was insightful and revealed the models behind the success of top European clubs. “I am now better equipped to deliver results and take my team to the next level,” he said.

Head Coach of DOSCADEK FA, Achina, Rev. Fr. Christian Umeojilinaka, noted that the workshop taught him the importance of data collection and application in football analysis. He pledged to use the knowledge in managing a professional club.

Technical Director of DOSCADEK FA, Rev. Fr. Damian Ogwatta, said the programme would elevate the status of Anambra coaches and administrators. He commended ANSFA and ANSFOCA for their commitment to capacity building.

In his vote of thanks, ANSFOCA Chairman, Evang. Obi Moneke, said the workshop opened a new vista of knowledge in football analysis and match reading. He described it as the first in a continuous series aimed at empowering Anambra coaches.

Moneke thanked participants for their commitment, commended Mr. Idris Okeke for his insights, and acknowledged Chief Iloenyosi for approving the programme.

The workshop concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants by the ANSFA Chairman, followed by photo sessions.

ANSFOCA, Binary Sports Launch Level 2 Workshop for 44 Anambra Coaches, Scouts

A two-day advanced workshop on Sports Performance Analysis and Coaching Development kicked off on Friday, 26th June 2026 in Awka, Anambra State.

The programme, organized by the Anambra State Football Coaches Association (ANSFOCA) in collaboration with Binary Sports Tech and the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), drew 44 participants including professional coaches, scouts, match readers, and analysts.

The two-day workshop which is holding at the Archbishop Obiefuna Pastoral and Retreat Centre, will run from Friday, 26th June to Saturday, 27th June 2026.

Facilitators for the session are Dr. Isah Ladan Bosso, President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association; Mr. Idris Okeke, Founder of Binary Sports and expert in performance analysis and Mr. Buhari Yusuf Makusidi, Lead Coordinator at Binary Sports.

In his opening remarks, ANSFOCA Chairman, Evang. Obi Moneke, said the workshop is designed to update Anambra coaches with modern trends in the game. He described it as a follow-up to last year’s Level 1 workshop, which improved participants’ skills in match reading, analysis, and data collection.

According to Moneke, the Level 2 training will build on existing knowledge with day one focusing on theory, data collection, and reading games in phases of play, while day two will be practical and hands-on. He urged participants to be attentive to fully assimilate the knowledge. Certificates will be issued at the end of the programme, qualifying attendees to work as match analysts in clubs across Nigeria and Africa.

Moneke, who also serves as Team Manager of Peace FC, a Nigeria Nationwide League Division One club, thanked ANSFA Chairman, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, for the association’s support.

Also speaking, Binary Sports Founder, Mr. Idris Okeke, said last year’s session introduced grassroots coaches to the basics of performance analysis. This year’s workshop, he noted, advances to modern techniques, tactical trends and performance metrics.

The veteran professional match analyst explained that day one will introduce key performance indicators for defense, attack, and transition, with emphasis on coaching players from U-6 to U-12 using FIFA standards, data, and performance matrices. Day two will cover match analysis reports, video analysis, and the use of video evidence and expected goals (xG) to improve player performance.

Okeke commended ANSFA and ANSFOCA for their foresight in driving capacity building for coaches in the state.

Topics to be covered in the workshop include tactical analysis, advanced match reporting, ball possession concepts, expected goals, video analysis, session planning, and spatial/positional analysis.

CACORP, Teva Foods Launch Tree Planting Drive At UNIZIK For Climate Action

The Centre for Agripreneur and Cooperative Research Practice (CACORP), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, in collaboration with Teva Foods, Jos, Plateau State, on Tuesday, 23rd June 2026, flagged off a tree planting exercise to commemorate the 2026 International Day.

With the theme, “Planting Trees for Posterity, Climate Action and Prosperity”, the programme was held at the Board Room of the Faculty of Management Sciences, UNIZIK.

Declaring the event open, the UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, urged Nigerians to embrace farming to boost food production, afforestation, job creation and ecosystem protection.

Represented by the former ASUU-UNIZIK Chairperson, Engr. Prof. Stephen Ufoaroh, the Vice-Chancellor commended CACORP for promoting agricultural values. Prof. Anyaehie assured the Centre of the current administration’s support and pledged to strengthen the university’s collaboration with Teva Foods.

In his welcome address, the Director of CACORP, Dr. Nma Okechukwu Okoroji, said the Centre’s vision is to be a world-class hub for agripreneurship and cooperative development. The scholar noted that CACORP drives sustainable livelihoods, food security, and rural transformation in Nigeria and Africa through research, training, and enterprise development.

Dr. Okoroji listed CACORP’s achievements, including training over 2,500 students, youths, and farmers on cooperative management, agripreneurship, climate-smart agriculture and value chain development. She also cited progress in cooperative strengthening, research and demonstration farms, partnerships, and policy advocacy.

Quoting Genesis 2:15, she described tree planting as “divine” and encouraged investment in agriculture for food security and economic growth. The CACORP Director also appreciated Teva Foods and the VC for their support.

The Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Francis Nwankwo, said the tree planting flag-off reflects UNIZIK’s commitment to food security, agricultural innovation, and national development. The Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences commended Dr. Okoroji for her leadership in advancing agripreneurship and cooperative development.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Ben Odoemena, described the theme as timely. Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Chinyere Nwabachili, he said tree planting and climate action must align with sustainable agribusiness. He added that the Ministry is pursuing private sector engagement, irrigation-led production, and competitive value chains under the state’s industrialisation agenda.

Guest Lecturer and Co-Founder/CEO of Teva Foods, Chima Christian, said Nigeria has 10.9 billion trees, which play a key role in regulating carbon emissions. He lamented the underutilisation of the resource, which contributes to food waste and urged Nigerians to acquire agricultural skills to boost food production and revenue.

In their goodwill messages, the State Chairman of NACOPPMAN, Hon. Emily Uzor, advocated coconut planting for revenue and afforestation. Rev. Elvis Okolie stressed skills development as the most valuable form of wealth creation. Mrs. Angela Uche-Echieh, State Coordinator of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, called for massive investment in agriculture for socio-economic development.

Also speaking, the Anambra State Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, High Chief Arthur Mbuba, said the collaboration with UNIZIK had been strengthened and assured of more federal initiatives to promote agriculture.

High points of the ceremony was the official tree planting by the Vice-Chancellor. Coconut seedlings from CACORP were also distributed to guests, and a memorabilia was presented to the Teva Foods CEO for his leadership in agripreneurship, youth empowerment, and climate action.

Otu Omenala Ojoto Protests ‘Arbitrary’ Changes to Festival Dates, Seeks Soludo’s Intervention

Members of Otu Omenala Ojoto Akanasato staged a peaceful protest at the Light House, Awka on Friday, 19th June 2026 urging the Anambra State Government to reverse what they described as arbitrary changes to the dates of traditional festivals in Ojoto community domiciled in Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.

Led by Chairman Chief Anthony Uzokwe, the protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as: “Omenala Ojoto ga-adịrị,” “Our Custom, Our Pride,” “The Dates of Our Festivals Cannot Be Changed Arbitrarily,” “Ojoto Customs and Traditions Are Not for Sale,” and “The Certificate Given by Government Is to Protect and Not Destroy.”

Speaking to journalists, Chief Uzokwe said the Ifejioku and Egwueke festivals have fixed dates and seasons that have been observed for generations. He alleged that the traditional ruler of Ojoto, Igwe Gerald Mbamalu, adjusted the dates without proper consultation to accommodate indigenes living at home and in the diaspora.

According to Uzokwe, the changes have created tension and division in the town. He appealed to Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to intervene and protect Ojoto’s customs, which he described as a heritage preserved for decades.

Receiving the protesters on behalf of the State Government, Chief of Staff to the Anambra State Government, Dr. Ben Nwankwo, alongside the State Chief of Protocol, Prof. Frank-Collins Okafor, and other government officials, accepted their letter and assured them that their concerns would be reviewed.

Dr. Nwankwo said Igwe Mbamalu would be invited for discussions to reach an amicable resolution. He stressed that tradition embodies the established way of life and practices of a people and must be preserved.

He commended the group for conducting the protest peacefully and urged members to remain law-abiding while awaiting the government’s response.

Anambra VB Queens Secure Record 4th Straight Win at 3rd CGC Volleyball Tournament

Anambra Volleyball Queens clinched their fourth consecutive victory at the ongoing 3rd Customs Comptroller-General (CGC) Volleyball Premier League, defeating Kaduna Emerald Female VB Team 3-0 on Sunday, 21st June 2026, at the tournament venue in Abuja.

The Queens delivered another commanding performance to maintain their momentum in the tournament.

Anambra began their campaign with a 3-2 win over Abia VB Queens, before edging Benue Queens VB by the same 3-2 scoreline.

They later recorded a 3-0 victory against Life Camp Volleyball Club, with set scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-23, prior to Sunday’s win over Kaduna Emerald.

With four wins from four matches, Anambra VB Queens are not top of their group but are in a very strong position to win in the female category of this 3rd edition of the CGC Volleyball Premier League.

The team will be aiming to extend their winning streak in their next fixture.

Anambra VB Queens Edge Benue Queens, Set to Face Customs Vipers

Anambra Volleyball Queens defeated Benue Queens 3-2 on Wednesday, 18th June 2026, in the 3rd Customs Comptroller-General (CGC) Volleyball Premier League in Abuja.

The Anambra side will next face Customs Vipers’ second team on Friday, 19th June 2026, also in Abuja.

Earlier, Anambra VB Queens had beaten Abia VB Queens 3-2 on Tuesday, 16th June 2026.

With two wins from two, Anambra will be aiming to clinch the title in this 3rd edition of the CGC Premier League.

UNIZIK Accountancy Department Kicks Off 7th International Conference on Africa’s Future

The Department of Accountancy, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Awka, on Wednesday, 17th June 2026, flagged off its two-day 7th International Hybrid Conference at the ASUU Secretariat, UNIZIK.

With the theme, “Shaping Africa’s Future through Accounting, Governance, Technology and Sustainable Business Management", the conference convened scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders to interrogate the continent’s development challenges.

Declaring the conference open, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, said the event offered an opportunity to push the frontiers of knowledge. He noted that the Accountancy Department has the capacity to become a faculty, having birthed four course programmes from the mother department.

Prof. Anyaehie added that for industry partners, the conference was a chance to share real-world problems that research could solve, while for students, it was a masterclass in responsible leadership.

In his chairman’s opening remarks, Special Adviser to the Anambra State Government on Investment, Mr. Christian Udechukwu, said the theme came at a critical time. He noted that Africa stands at a crossroads where transparency, accountability, and innovation will determine whether its vast potentials translate into lasting prosperity. The former Commissioner for Industry added that accounting is no longer just about numbers but a language of trust that underpins governance and public confidence.

The Head of Department, Prof. Onyinye Eneh, said the theme reflects some of the most pressing issues confronting the continent as it pursues sustainable growth and economic transformation. She stressed that UNIZIK remains committed to advancing knowledge, promoting innovation, and fostering partnerships for national and continental development.

The Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Francis Nwankwo, described accounting as the language of business and a vital tool for economic growth. He stated that when complemented by sound governance, emerging technologies, and sustainable business practices, accounting becomes a powerful driver of institutional effectiveness and societal progress.

Delivering the keynote, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, emphasized that without reliable financial information, governments cannot budget effectively, investors cannot trust markets, and citizens cannot demand performance. He called for inclusive, data-driven governance and urged accounting and governance professionals to be tech-literate to achieve sustainable business management.

Former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Chief Osita Chidoka, in a lead paper, spoke on, “Governance as the Foundation of Africa’s Future,” highlighting the role of governance in societal development and accounting in sustainable models across sectors.

Other lead paper presenters included Major General Charles Ofoche (Rtd), former Director-General of the Armed Forces Research and Development Bureau, and Prof. Suleiman Aruwa, Professor of Accounting and Finance, Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

The conference featured presentations, panel discussions, and the presentation of memorabilia to resource persons, friends, and benefactors of the department, as well as promoters of educational growth.

UNIZIK Pre-Conference Symposium Advocates Innovation, Ethics for Next-Gen Business Leaders

Business leaders, financial experts, and policy influencers have emphasized the need for enterprise leadership in Nigeria and across the continent anchored on innovation, education and sustainability.

The call was made at the Pre-Conference Symposium of the Department of Accountancy, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, held on Tuesday, 16th June 2026 at the UNIZIK Business School with the theme, “From Vision to Legacy: Inspiring Africa’s Next Generation of Responsible Business Leaders.”

Declaring the symposium open, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, said the event created a synergy between town and gown with the presence of industry leaders.

The VC who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Alex Asigbo noted that the symposium was essential for inspiring young entrepreneurs. The scholar commended the department for the initiative and reaffirmed the university’s readiness to partner with industry and provide institutional support.

In her remarks, the Head of the Department of Accountancy, Prof. Onyinye Eneh, said the theme was deliberately chosen to reflect enterprise development through visionary leadership and innovation. She added that the event provided a platform for experts in business, finance, and policy to cross-fertilize ideas and enrich educational pedagogy.

Dr. Chienye Okafor, SAN, who moderated the session, said such engagements strengthen the town-and-gown relationship and highlight the role of education in enterprise development.

Delivering the keynote, the GMD/CEO of VFD Group Plc, Mr. Nonso Okpala, listed key variables for responsible enterprise development: a solid work plan, a dedicated team, scalability, good record-keeping, wealth management mindset, and corporate social responsibility. He commended the department for sustaining the dialogue.

Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake, Secretary to the Anambra State Government, in her remarks spoke on ethical leadership and its role in human capital development. She urged successful firms to support education and societal growth.

Other speakers also made contributions to the discourse were Dr. Tonna Ejiofor, Head of Debt Solutions & Financial Advisory at FirstCap Ltd, who identified actionable planning, prudent resource management, innovation and record-keeping as key to enterprise growth.

Mr. Sampson Aneke, Directorate Head, East Directorate, UBA Plc, stated that hard work and smart innovation were critical to success and outlined loan requirements for credible organizations.

Speaking also, Mrs. Joan Oluchi Emegoakor, Head of Anambra Emerging Tax Audit, Nigeria Revenue Service, stressed the importance of proper documentation and tax compliance in achieving enterprise development.

On his part, Mr. Azubuike Emordi, MD/CEO of Afriland Properties Plc, spoke on the role of education and effective processes in achieving success in the real estate sector.

Re-echoing the views of other panelists, Mr. Ikeazor Okonkwo, Chairman/CEO of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, and Dr. Kamsolibe Ben-Emeasoba, GMD of Hardley Grey Group, affirmed that education and ethical leadership were central to enterprise success.
