Africa Must Move From Gas Export to Industrialization, Says Ex-UNIZIK VC Esimone

Africa must move beyond exporting natural gas to building industries, creating jobs and developing home-grown technologies if it hopes to translate its vast energy resources into sustainable economic growth, the Vice-Chancellor of Transatlantic University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Prof. Charles Okechukwu Esimone, FAS, has said.

Prof. Esimone made the call on Wednesday, 28th October, 2026, at the third annual EMOGAS International Natural Gas-Based Industry Conference and Exhibition in Abuja, where industry stakeholders examined strategies for expanding Africa's liquefied natural gas trade, attracting investment and strengthening domestic gas-based industries.

The erstwhile Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said the continent had yet to fully convert its substantial gas reserves into industrial development and widespread economic prosperity, stressing that resource ownership alone would not guarantee economic transformation.

"The more important questions are how do we develop these resources responsibly? How do we create stronger producer partnerships? How do we attract and sustain investment?" Esimone queried.

The conference, themed "Accelerating Africa's Global LNG Trade Share and Driving Gas Industrialization Through Innovative and Strategic Upstream Petroleum and Gas Producer Synergies and Investment Decisions," focuses on investment, collaboration and strategies for expanding Africa's participation in the global gas market.

Prof. Esimone, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of European University, said governments, energy companies, universities and entrepreneurs must work together to develop commercially viable products and services from the continent's natural gas resources.

The scholar argued that governments have a responsibility to establish predictable policies and effective regulatory frameworks, while private-sector operators should provide the capital, technology and operational expertise required to develop the industry.

According to him, Africa's ability to achieve gas-driven industrialization will depend not only on the resources available but also on its capacity to harness innovation and develop technologies that address its specific economic and industrial needs.

Prof. Esimone cautioned against allowing Africa to remain merely a consumer of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, advanced data analytics, digital twins and automation.

Prof. Esimone also stressed the need to invest in human capital and strengthen collaboration among universities, research institutions, governments and industry, saying African engineers, scientists and entrepreneurs must play a greater role across the energy value chain.

The conference also examined liquefied natural gas trade, investment partnerships, natural gas utilisation and monetisation, energy security, and the deployment of advanced technologies to protect critical gas infrastructure.

Others who spoke at the conference were the founder of Emogas Limited and conference organiser, Emeka Okafor, and the General Manager, Midstream Monitoring Division of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Ozimede Suleiman, who spoke on financing opportunities for indigenous operators.

UNIZIK Celebrates 2026 Iri Ji Festival, Showcases Yam as Symbol of Igbo Identity, Medicine

The Directorate of Igbo Village and Institute of African Heritage Studies (IVIAHS), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Thursday, October 29, 2026, held its 2026 Iri Ji Festival and Conference.

The festival, with the theme, "Ji Bu Eze Nri Na Ogwu Ndigbo" (Yam is the King of Food and Medicine of the Igbo), was held at the ASUU-NAU Secretariat, UNIZIK.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, High Chief Ogechukwu Olisa (CeeRay), said the first ritual presentation of the new yam, its blessing and subsequent communal consumption mark a transition from the agricultural labour of the preceding season to the enjoyment of its fruits.

He affirmed that the University, through IVIAHS, is on the right path in promoting the cultural values of the Igbo race, and called for sustenance of the legacy of celebrating yam as one of the most important crops given to mankind by God.

Declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, said the conference and festival is timely and profound, noting that in Igbo cosmology and socio-cultural organization, yam (Ji) is far more than an agricultural staple, as it is a symbol of strength, prosperity, discipline, harvest and royal status.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Alex Asigbo, said through interdisciplinary research combining agriculture, ethnobotany, medicine and nutrition, UNIZIK is committed to uncovering the full therapeutic and economic values of traditional foods and medicines.

The VC reaffirmed the institution's dedication to remaining a leading centre for African Heritage Studies, indigenous science and research innovation, adding that the University will welcome strategic academic, governmental and international partnerships that aim to preserve African heritage while advancing sustainable development.

In his welcome address, the Director of IVIAHS, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Bonachristus Umeogu, said the gathering was not merely to celebrate the harvest of yam but to honour one of the most eloquent expressions of Igbo civilization; a cultural institution in which agriculture becomes philosophy, food becomes identity, labour becomes dignity and thanksgiving becomes a collective affirmation of life.

Prof. Umeogu stated that Iri Ji is not simply the eating of new yam but a ceremonial interpretation of the Igbo relationship with the earth, the ancestors, the community and the transcendent.

The cleric affirmed that the festival also illuminates the Igbo understanding of the relationship between the visible and invisible dimensions of existence. He said the responsibility of IVIAHS is neither to romanticize antiquity nor to surrender Igbo identity to uncritical modernization, but rather to bring the wisdom of cultural inheritance into constructive dialogue with contemporary scholarship.

On his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. George Onwudiwe commended the Director of IVIAHS for ensuring Igbo values is sustained with various cultural activities in the institution. The Dean of Arts stated that the Faculty will continue to support events and activities in promoting Igbo cultural values and identity.

In his goodwill message, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Hon. Barr. Udoji Okolo Amedu, commended IVIAHS for the colourful event geared towards the promotion of Igbo cultural values and heritage.

Hon. Amedu, who was represented by Mrs. Nneka Achebe, assured of the continuous support of the Ministry and collaboration with UNIZIK IVIAHS in promoting Igbo ideals both now and in the near future.

The colourful event featured traditional blessing of the new yam, ceremonial cutting, tasting and sharing of the new yam by the Vice-Chancellor and the Royal Fathers.

It also featured presentation of memorabilia, unveiling of the IVIAHS Heritage Development Vision, as well as cultural celebrations, traditional dance displays and entertainment.

Erosion: Onyendozi Pledges Legislative Action To Attract FG Intervention in Anambra Central

The All Progressives Grand Alliance candidate for Anambra Central zone, Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo (Onyendozi) has pledged to pursue robust legislative interventions to attract Federal Government attention to the devastating erosion menace ravaging communities in the zone.

Hon. Nwankwo made the pledge on Wednesday, 28th October, 2026 during his Thank You Tour and inauguration of the Onyendozi Campaign Council at Dunukofia Local Government Area.

Hon. Nwankwo described erosion as an existential threat to lives, farmlands and infrastructure across the district. Hon. Nwankwo lamented that many communities in Dunukofia, Njikoka, Idemili and Awka axis are on the brink of being cut off due to unattended gully erosion sites.

The two-term former House of Representatives member said his experience in the National Assembly has shown that erosion control requires deliberate legislative push, including motions, budgetary insertions and effective oversight of ecological funds.

He assured that if elected to the Senate in 2027, he would work with relevant federal agencies such as the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) and the Ecological Fund Office to ensure Anambra Central gets its fair share of intervention.

Nwankwo praised the collaboration among APGA candidates for the Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly across the constituency, and assured that they are united in the march to victory in the forthcoming elections. He called on the electorate to stand firm with APGA and its candidates to reap the dividends of quality representation at all levels.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of Dunukofia LGA, Barrister Chijioke Ozumba assured Onyendozi that the local government is ready to vote him in as Senator for Anambra Central.

On his part, the Coordinator of Onyendozi Dunukofia Campaign Council and MD/CEO, Anambra Transport Management Agency, Engr. Emeka Okonkwo (Konti Complete), assured Onyendozi that the seven communities in Dunukofia are solidly behind him and will reward him with their votes.

Others who pledged their support for Onyendozi were the member representing Dunukofia Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Chuks Azotani as well as the Commissioner for Lands, Prof. Ofonze Amucheazi, SAN.

Hon. Nwankwo Facilitates Classrooms, Fence, Borehole Projects at Enugwu-Ukwu's Ide Secondary School

In a bid to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for students, Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo (Onyendozi) has facilitated the provision of key infrastructural facilities at Ide Secondary School, Enugwu-Ukwu, in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The projects include construction and renovation of classrooms, perimeter fencing, provision of a borehole and installation of a new gate for the school.

According to stakeholders, the facilities will help improve security within the school premises and provide access to potable water for students and staff, thereby supporting effective teaching and learning.

Hon. Nwankwo, who served two terms in the House of Representatives for Anaocha, Dunukofia and Njikoka Federal Constituency, is now seeking the mandate of Ndi Anambra Central to represent the zone in the Senate in the January 16, 2027 National Assembly election.

Hon. Dozie Nwankwo's supporters say his track record of facilitating projects that address everyday needs of the people, and creating opportunities for young people, stands him out as a candidate with experience to attract more development and contribute to quality lawmaking for the benefit of Anambra Central and Nigeria at large.

They noted that more schools in the zone still need improved facilities, while youths require skills and support, adding that the work is not done and more development is still needed for communities in the senatorial district.

Awka Zone Wins Anambra Basic Schools Sports Competition

Awka Zone has emerged overall winner of the State Final Basic Education School Sports Competition organized by the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

In the grand finale held on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the Awka City Stadium, Awka Zone topped the medals table with 7 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals and won the star prize of N300,000.

Onitsha Zone came second with 5 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals and a prize of N200,000, while Aguata Zone finished third with 4 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals, going home with N100,000.

In the climax of the finals, Aguata Zone defeated Onitsha Zone 1-0 in the U-12 male football final, courtesy of a 16th-minute goal scored by Chidera Umennabuike of Town School, Igboukwu. Otuocha Zone had earlier beaten Nnewi Zone 1-0 to clinch third place, with Obinna Nnalue of Premier Primary School, Otuocha, scoring the lone goal.

Declaring the finals open, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, commended ASUBEB for the initiative aimed at promoting sports culture at the primary school level.

Agha Mba said the competition was an opportunity to discover and nurture talents from schools at the right age, with a view to producing the next generation of superstars. He assured of the continued support of his ministry towards enhancing sports development, while thanking Governor Chukwuma Soludo for providing an enabling environment for a vibrant sports ecosystem.

In her address, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr. Justina Chinyere Anyadiegwu, said the sports programme is aimed at discovering talents, building character, promoting healthy development and giving pupils the opportunity to demonstrate that they can excel not only in the classroom but also on the field of play.

Dr. Anyadiegwu eulogized Governor Soludo for his leadership and commitment to building a future in which every child has the opportunity to learn, develop and fulfil their potential.

The ASUBEB Executive Chairman also acknowledged UBEC for its support and commitment to strengthening basic education, including opportunities that promote the all-round development of pupils.

The ASUBEB boss appreciated the Commissioners for Education and Youth Development and Sports for their efforts towards sports development in Anambra State, particularly at the basic education level, noting that the ambition is not merely to produce pupils who pass examinations, but to nurture confident, healthy, disciplined and well-rounded individuals who can contribute meaningfully to society.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Oguguo, described the programme as apt and essential in promoting sports development at the school level through recreational and academic activities.

The Education Commissioner commended Dr. Anyadiegwu and her team for ensuring a seamless event that will further enhance academic pursuits at the basic education level, while assuring of the continued support of the Ministry of Education.

On her part, the UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr. Aisha Garba, who was represented by the Zonal Coordinator, South-East Sports for UBEC, Dr. Philip Omeri, said sports promotion is part of basic education in line with the three domains of education. She noted that promoting sports at the primary school level is essential for the total mental development of pupils.

The state finals featured events such as the 100 metres finals for boys and girls, 4x100 metres relay finals for boys and girls, as well as medal presentations for the zones.

Present at the finals were board members of ASUBEB, directors and political appointees.

Jhpiego, MESHI Partner to Boost Reproductive Health Awareness in Anambra Communities

The Malaria Eradication and Safe Health Initiative of Nigeria (MESHI), Anambra State Chapter, in partnership with Jhpiego, has reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to quality integrated healthcare services in Anambra State.

This was disclosed during a press briefing organized for the UNIZIK FM Chapel, led by Dr. Chika Nnabuife, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The briefing was held at the Postgraduate Hall, Faculty of Media and Communication Studies, on Monday, October 26, 2026.

MESHI was represented by its Programme Officer, Ogechukwu Onyejedum.

Explaining the project, Onyejedum said the Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights and Communicable Diseases (SRHR/CD) Project is funded by the Global Fund through the National AIDS and STIs Control Programme (NASCP) and implemented by Jhpiego in Anambra, Ebonyi, Kwara, and Gombe States.

In Anambra State, she said Jhpiego is partnering with MESHI to implement the project across 15 health facilities and communities in Aguata, Idemili South, and Ogbaru Local Government Areas.

According to Onyejedum, the project aims to improve awareness and access to quality integrated healthcare services, especially sexual and reproductive health information and services.

The MESHI Programme Officer noted that the initiative focuses on raising awareness and increasing access to family planning, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) screening, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for the prevention of cervical cancer, and prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The project also encourages adolescents and young people to seek information on sexual and reproductive health, make informed health choices, and access healthcare services without fear or discrimination.

She urged residents to visit their nearest participating Primary Health Centre (PHC) for health information, counselling, screening, referrals, and other available services.

APGA Shows United Front in Idemili South as Onyendozi Inaugurates Campaign Council

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has demonstrated a united front in Idemili South Local Government Area as its candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo (Onyendozi), inaugurated his campaign council.

Onyendozi, who is the frontrunner for the Anambra Central seat, reiterated his call for collaboration and unity among APGA candidates to ensure total victory in the forthcoming elections. He thanked the wards in Idemili South for electing him during the APGA primaries.

The erstwhile MP who represented Anaocha, Dunukofia and Njikoka Federal Constituency at the Green Chambers stated this on Monday, 26th October, 2026 after inaugurating the Onyendozi Campaign Council across the seven communities and 12 wards in Idemili South LGA at the Local Government Headquarters, Ojoto.

Hon. Nwankwo further assured that the three APGA candidates for Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly are working together and harmoniously.

On his part, the APGA candidate for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Chief Ikenna Iyiegbu (Ike Cubana), said the inauguration of the Onyendozi campaign council marks the third chapter of earlier inauguration. Chief Iyiegbu informed that the party are featuring very credible and competence candidates for the upcoming elections.

UNIZIK Safety Department Holds Send-Forth for Past CSOs, Presents Awards

The Safety Department of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, held a send-forth ceremony for past Chief Safety Officers (CSOs) and an award presentation to staff and friends of the department.

The colourful event attracted safety personnel of the university, security operatives in the state and friends of the department.

Declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, said the occasion calls for celebration of excellent service.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the University Public Relations Officer, Mr. Aloysius Attah, commended the department for organising the event and for its role in ensuring safety in the university. He also appreciated past and serving officers for their contributions to securing the institution.

Prof. Anyaehie noted that labour of love cannot be forgotten, adding that life evolves. He cited the example of Dr. Lawrence Okeke, who moved from CSO to lecturer and is now the Head of Department of Marketing.

He assured that the welfare of staff and students remains the number one priority of his administration and is among the eight pillars of his administration.

According to him, a secured UNIZIK is a greater and better UNIZIK, stressing that without security, the university cannot function efficiently.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Super High Chief Nnamdi Kizito Onunkwo, who was represented by Amb. Obinna Ubabike, said it was delightful to honour those who work towards securing the institution.

Chief Onunkwo thanked the safety unit for organising the event, noting that safety is one of the fundamental pillars upon which any institution, especially a learning institution, is built.

He said without an enabling environment of general well-being, the full potential of an institution cannot be realised. He thanked the past CSOs for their service and the staff for their dedication.

In his address, the Chairman, Safety Welfare Association, Safety Department, Mr. Onyeka Chinedu, described the event as a day of gratitude.

Mr. Chinedu said it was important to celebrate past CSOs because during their tenures they maintained peace between the university and host communities, reduced cultism and crime on campus through proactive intelligence, mentored young safety officers who are now commanders in various zones, and built synergy with the Police, DSS, NSCDC, Army and AVG.

Mr. Chinedu appreciated their immense contributions but highlighted challenges facing the department in securing a university as large and open as UNIZIK. To effectively secure lives and property in line with the VC’s vision of a safe and world-class university, he said, the department is constrained by lack of logistics.

He listed the needs of the department to include operational patrol vehicles such as Hilux vans, a shuttle bus for the Safety Welfare Association, training and retraining of officers, and provision of communication gadgets.

He thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his fatherly support and called for a rekindling of the spirit of service, sacrifice and loyalty to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

In his lecture titled “From Sporadic Reactions to Rapid Response”, the Director, Institute for Peace, Security and Development Studies, UNIZIK, Prof. Jaja Nwanegbo, said it was important to build values into the safety and security architecture of the university.

Prof. Nwanegbo explained that sporadic reaction entails responding to situations as they occur, while strategic intervention entails training and retraining security personnel and empowering them with necessary gadgets.

Prof. Nwanegbo called for the protection of key assets of the institution, including intellectual records. He noted that UNIZIK operates four campuses with difficult terrains, which makes uniform security planning ineffective, hence the need for strategic planning.

The Director of UNIZIK IPSDS recommended strategic response measures including a Vice-Chancellor-led security committee, repair of perimeter fencing, provision of vehicles for rapid response, insurance cover for safety officers, and recruitment of younger personnel.

The ceremony also featured goodwill messages from past Chief Safety Officers, including Chief Ken Chukwurah and Dr. Lawrence Okeke.

Highlights of the event were presentations of memorabilia and awards to distinguished personalities including the Chairman of UNIZIK Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU), Engr. Prof. Stephen Ufoaroh; the Chairman of the occasion, Super High Chief Nnamdi Kizito Onunkwo; the member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Prof. Lilian Orogbu; the APGA candidate for Awka South Constituency 1, Chief Igwedimma Nwofor; former President-General of Enugwu-Ukwu, Chief Bonny Nkwuaku, among others.

UNIZIK Safety Welfare Association Honours ACTU Chairman, Prof. Ufoaroh, as Friend of Safety Unit

The Safety Welfare Association of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has honoured the Chairman of the UNIZIK Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) and President-General of Ifitedunu Community, Engr. Prof. Stephen Uchenna Ufoaroh, with an award as Friend of the Safety Unit.

The award was presented to Prof. Ufoaroh during the send-forth ceremony for past Chief Safety Officers and award presentation to staff and friends of the department held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at the University Auditorium.

The award was in recognition of his outstanding performance in the fight against corruption, as well as his cooperation and friendship with the Safety Department.

In his response, Prof. Ufoaroh thanked the department for the honour and made a donation in appreciation of the award as well as to support their services. He charged safety officers to be re-energised and diligent in the discharge of their duties.

The scholar commended the Safety Department for its immense contributions to ensuring safety in the university and appreciated past and serving Chief Safety Officers.

Prof. Ufoaroh assured the department of his continuous support while calling on staff of the institution and friends to aid the Safety Department to enhance its service delivery.

NCDMB Partners NexDepot, El Zino To Train UNIZIK Students on Transformer Installation and Maintenance

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), in partnership with NexDepot Nig. Ltd and El Zino, on Monday, October 19, 2026, commenced a one-month Electrical Power Transformer Installation, Repair and Maintenance Training for students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka.

The training has 40 undergraduate participants, 28 of whom are from the Faculty of Engineering.

Declaring the training open, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, UNIZIK, Engr. Prof. Ugochukwu Okonkwo, described the programme as a triple-helix arrangement involving the university, government, represented by NCDMB, and the private sector.

Prof. Okonkwo said the university and students would benefit immensely from the hands-on exposure, noting that practical skills remain the foundation of self-reliance. The scholar recalled that the first income he earned was from hands-on skills.

The UNIZIK FEG Dean observed that despite the growth of solar energy, Nigeria still grapples with power challenges, as laboratories, workshops and industries rely heavily on conventional power supply to run sensitive equipment. He charged the participants to see themselves as part of the solution, stressing that every sector depends on electricity.

According to him, the training will equip students with practical industrial skills sought by companies and capable of making them self-reliant. He added that irrespective of discipline, every participant has a role to play, and urged them to take the programme seriously.

Prof. Okonkwo emphasised the importance of safety and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when operating electrical equipment and thanked NCDMB for choosing UNIZIK for the capacity-building programme.

In his remarks, the Programme Coordinator, Mr. Samuel Joseph Eyo, who served in the Directorate of Earth Observation at the Defence Space Administration (DSA) as Space Science and Technology Officer 1, said the programme demonstrates the value of collaboration between government institutions, private organisations and educational institutions in addressing societal needs.

Mr. Eyo said through such engagements, NCDMB is bringing the goodwill and developmental commitments of the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, closer to Nigerians, particularly young people in need of practical skills to become more productive.

"The essence of these initiatives is simple: government policies and development commitments must translate into tangible benefits for the people. Beyond announcements and plans, we want to see young people acquire skills, institutions receive meaningful support, and communities experience the positive impact of purposeful partnerships," he said.

Eyo commended UNIZIK for providing an enabling institutional environment for the programme, noting that the university’s cooperation has strengthened confidence in the institution as a suitable partner for technical training and future Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes.

The programme coordinator appreciated the management of the university, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Chris Okafor, for their support and cooperation in facilitating the programme.

Also speaking, the Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Engr. Prof. Christian Emeka Okafor, said skill acquisition is essential for total training and capacity building of students to become solution providers for society.

Prof. Okafor noted that multinationals, industries and companies are constantly in search of competent and skilled personnel who can add value, and thanked NCDMB and its partners for the initiative.

On his part, the President of the Students Union Government (SUG), UNIZIK, Comrade Chukwueloka Winston Nnake, said the programme aligns with the aspirations of the SUG, as it will equip students with skills to become nation builders and contribute to the power sector.

Comrade Nnake said participants would be better skilled at the end of the training, adding that his administration plans to organise a Skill-Up programme covering various vocations and crafts to empower students. He thanked the coordinators for choosing UNIZIK.

The facilitator, Engr. Dr. Ugochukwu Anionovo, in his lecture titled “Power Transformer and Maintenance”, explained the fundamentals of transformers and safety. He defined a transformer as a machine that transfers AC electrical energy between circuits by electromagnetic induction, and outlined transformer types, components, basic operational relationships, accessories and protection.

The Programme Coordinator disclosed that at the end of the training, participants would be provided with PPE materials, including overalls, helmets, safety boots and gloves, as well as certificates and stipends. He added that lunch would be provided throughout the duration of the training.

ANSFA Boss, Iloenyosi Hails Rangers' Fighting Spirit in Victory Over MC Alger

The Chairman of Anambra State Football Association, Chikelue Iloenyosi, has congratulated Rangers International Football Club of Enugu on their impressive 2-0 victory over Algerian champions MC Alger in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.

Iloenyosi described the victory as a testament to the fighting spirit, resilience and quality of the Flying Antelopes, who rose to the occasion despite playing with 10 men for much of the encounter.

He commended the players and technical crew for their discipline, courage and perseverance, noting that the late goals from Kenneth Igboke and James Emo rewarded the team's commitment.

According to him, Rangers' performance has once again demonstrated the capacity of Nigerian clubs to compete favourably against formidable opponents on the continental stage.

"This is a commendable victory for Rangers International and Nigerian football. Winning 2-0 against a strong side like MC Alger, especially under such challenging circumstances, speaks volumes about the character, resilience and determination of the team," Iloenyosi said.

"I congratulate the players, the technical crew, the management and supporters of Rangers International on this important achievement. They have made Enugu State and Nigerian football proud.

"While celebrating this victory, I urge the team to remain focused, humble and determined ahead of the return leg in Algeria. Ezeh, Udokwelu Emerge Champions of Chief Kingsley Uduh Anambra Open Tennis Tourney

Top seed Tochukwu Ezeh has emerged winner of the men's singles of the two-day Chief Kingsley Uduh Anambra Open Tennis Tournament held at the City Sports Club, Amawbia/Awka from Saturday, 17th to Sunday, 18th October, 2026.

Ezeh defeated Emmanuel Madueke 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 in the final to clinch the N100,000 star prize, while Madueke took home N50,000 as runner-up.

En route to the final, Ezeh thrashed Divine Ihezie 6-1, 6-1 in the semi-final, while Madueke saw off second seed Maximilian Chidera Izueke 7-6, 5-1 (rtd).

In the women's singles final, Stella Udokwelu defeated Amala Nwokolo 6-0, 6-2 in straight sets. Udokwelu had earlier beaten Loveth Ezecheta 6-0, 6-1 in the first semi-final, while Nwokolo defeated Joy Omega 6-1, 6-1 to reach the final.

Udokwelu won N50,000 as champion, while Nwokolo got N30,000 as runner-up.

In his remarks, the President of City Sports Club, Amawbia/Awka, Hon. Chukwuma Ezeafulukwe, thanked the sponsor for choosing the club as venue despite other available options.

He said the tournament was a step in the right direction and would help discover tennis talents in the state.

Ezeafulukwe congratulated the winners and all participants and thanked God for a hitch-free competition with no injuries. He assured that more top tennis tournaments, sponsored by United Nigeria Airlines and Air Peace, would be hosted by the club soon.

He congratulated the winners and urged stakeholders to continue supporting the growth of tennis and sports in general in the state.

Also speaking, the sponsor and Chairman of Anambra State Tennis Association, Chief Kingsley Uduh, described the event as a spectacular two-day sporting fiesta.

Chief Uduh who was represented by the State Association Secretary, Mr. Chijioke Onyedika said the competition was aimed at promoting tennis in the state and also served as a qualifier for athletes who will represent Team Anambra at the forthcoming 23rd National Sports Festival (NSF).

He thanked the City Sports Club for believing in the Association's vision through its immense support and commended the Ministry for its commitment to building a robust sports ecosystem in the state. He assured that the tournament has come to stay.

In the men's category, all participants received N15,000 each, quarter-finalists got N20,000 each, while semi-finalists got N30,000 each. In the women's category, participants received N10,000 each, while semi-finalists got N20,000 each.

In the men's singles draw, top seed Tochukwu Ezeh will face Princewill Nzewi, while second seed Maximilian Izueke is up against Nonso Ezechukwu.

Third seed Augustine Nwokedi will square off against Chibuzor Onyekwelu, and fourth seed Ugochukwu Njoku will play the winner of the clash between Oguguo Nduka Obikwelu and Ikenna Azodoh.

Anambra Open Tennis Tournament Begins Saturday, Targets Grassroots Growth - Uduh

The Chairman of the Anambra State Tennis Association, Chief Kingsley Uduh, says the Chief Kingsley Uduh Anambra Open Tennis Tournament is aimed at promoting the growth of tennis in the state.

Chief Uduh stated this on Friday, 16th October, 2026, during a press conference at the City Sports Club, Amawbia/Awka, to herald the two-day tournament scheduled to hold from Saturday, 17th to Sunday, 18th October, 2026.

According to him, the competition is a homecoming tournament for Ndi Anambra and will also serve as a platform to select players that will represent the state at the 23rd National Sports Festival (NSF) to be hosted by Enugu State in November 2026.

He disclosed that the tournament is open to all circuit and club players aged 18 and above, both male and female. The winner will go home with N100,000, the runner-up N75,000, while the semi-finalists will receive N50,000 each as consolation prizes.

Chief Uduh thanked the President of City Sports Club for approving the use of the club's tennis courts for the event. He also appreciated his friends and well-wishers for their encouragement and support, and urged tennis fans and sports lovers in the state to come out en masse to cheer the players and contribute to the development of the game.

On his part, the Secretary of the Anambra State Tennis Association, Mr. Chijioke Onyedika, said 30 players will feature in the tournament, which has come to stay.

Onyedika noted that the competition is aimed at promoting tennis and showcasing the association's activities, adding that the body has lined up programmes including an Under-18 tournament for secondary school students and an inter-club competition to harmonise all tennis clubs in the state.

He called on participants to exhibit sportsmanship, assuring that the organisers would be impartial and provide a level playing field.

Anambra Central 2027: Dozie Nwankwo Inaugurates LG Campaign Coordinators, Charges Them on Grassroots Mobilisation

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo (Onyendozi), has inaugurated his Local Government Campaign Coordinators and charged them to take the party's message to every ward and community.

The inauguration took place on Wednesday, 14th October, 2026, at the Dozie Nwankwo Campaign Office in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area, as part of ongoing preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Addressing the coordinators, Hon. Toplevel Sports Management to Hold 4-Day International Scouting Program in Awka

Toplevel Sports Management Ltd is set to hold a four-day International Football Scouting Program.

According to the Scouting Coordinator, Mr. Ifeanyi Ojukwu, the exercise will hold from October 13th to 16th, 2026, at the Awka City Stadium, Anambra State.

A total of 16 professional clubs and academies are expected to participate. They include Solution FC, Rangers International FC, Edel FC, Abakaliki FC, Peace FC, Chidex FC of Abuja, Maureen Madu FC, Uchenna Kanu Academy, Udi Stars Academy, Emmydinho FC of Lagos, Ozalla FA, C. Ifitedunu PG and Patron, Prof. Ufoaroh Leads UNIZIK Giant Progressive Club and NFSS on Courtesy Visit to UNIZIK VC

The President General of Ifitedunu Community and Patron of UNIZIK Giant Progressive Club, Engr. Prof. Stephen Uchenna Ufoaroh, on Friday, October 9, 2026, led two delegations on courtesy visits to the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie.

The delegations were the UNIZIK Giant Progressive Club and the Anambra State Command of the Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS).

In the first visit, former student leaders of the University under the aegis of UNIZIK Giant Progressive Club proposed a N2 million award fund for best graduating students across all campuses of the University as part of efforts to promote academic excellence.

Speaking during the visit, the President of the Club and former Director of Transport of the Students Union Government (SUG), Engr. Opurum Emmanuel, said the visit was to familiarize the Club with the Vice-Chancellor and explore areas of collaboration to support students and the University community.

In his remarks, the Patron of the Club, Engr. Prof. Stephen Ufoaroh, promised to lead the UNIZIK Giant Progressive Club to make greater impact within the University community and the wider society through initiatives that promote academic excellence, mentorship and community development.

Responding, Prof. Anyaehie commended the initiative, describing it as a noble effort aimed at encouraging academic excellence and strengthening alumni contributions to the growth of the University. He however advised the Club to liaise with the University Committee responsible for Students' Awards to work out an equitable distribution formula for the prize.

During the second visit, the Nigerian Forest Security Service sought collaboration with Nnamdi Azikiwe University to protect its forest reserves from encroachment, intruders and indiscriminate destruction.

Speaking on behalf of the Service, its Public Relations Officer, CSF Nneke Chibueke, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for receiving the delegation. He explained that the NFSS is mandated to safeguard forest reserves across the state and is committed to curbing activities that deplete forest resources.

In his remarks, Prof. Ufoaroh affirmed that the NFSS has the capacity and commitment to effectively discharge its duties in protecting the institution's forest reserve.

Responding, Prof. Anyaehie welcomed the delegation and acknowledged the role of security agencies in maintaining peace and safety within the University and its host communities.

Prof. Anyaehie stated that the security of lives, property and the vast landmass of the University remains a top priority of his administration and assured the Service of the institution's readiness to collaborate in preserving its forest reserve and enhancing environmental security.

Ifitedunu Town Union Awards N3.6Million Scholarship to 18 Indigent Undergraduates, Rewards JAMB High Scorers

The Ifitedunu Town Union has awarded scholarships worth N200,000 each to 18 indigent undergraduates from the five villages of the community under the second phase of its 2026 Education Support Programme.

The Union also honoured outstanding candidates who excelled in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The presentation ceremony was held on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at the Ifitedunu Civic Centre, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The education intervention was sponsored by three illustrious sons and daughters of the community - Chief Clement Okeke (Akajiugo), Amb. Dr. Monica Okwuchukwu Enebechi (née Obinabo), and Barr. & Mrs. Frank Nwafor.

Addressing the gathering, the President General of Ifitedunu Town Union, Engr. Prof. Stephen Uchenna Ufoaroh (Ugochinyelu), said the scholarship scheme was instituted to ensure that financial hardship does not deny brilliant but indigent youths access to higher education.

Prof. Ufoaroh explained that the 18 beneficiaries were selected through a transparent and merit-based process across the five villages. The breakdown shows Umuanugwo got seven slots, Ukpomili five, Akwa three, Igbuala two and Obieze one.

He noted that each beneficiary received N200,000 for the 2025/2026 academic session and will receive another N200,000 for the 2026/2027 session. New students who gain admission in 2026/2027 will also be added to the scheme.

The beneficiaries are students of public tertiary institutions including Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (10), Federal Polytechnic, Oko (2), Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (2), Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (1), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1), UNN Teaching Hospital (1), and Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (1).

Prof. Ufoaroh charged the beneficiaries to justify the investment by maintaining a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.00, shunning cultism, examination malpractice and other vices capable of truncating their academic careers.

According to him, the Town Union's education intervention goes beyond undergraduate scholarships to include payment of WAEC and JAMB fees for indigent students and organization of free holiday lessons for junior and senior secondary school students in Ifitedunu and neighbouring communities.

He added that the Union is also supporting sports development and plans to extend assistance to youths interested in vocational and skills acquisition.

Prof. Ufoaroh lauded the sponsors for their sustained commitment, disclosing that Amb. Enebechi has committed N1 million annually for five undergraduates, while Barr. & Mrs. Nwafor have committed N100,000 annually for best students in Law, Medicine, Computer Science/Mathematics, Engineering and Economics. Chief Okeke, he said, sponsored 13 indigent students at N200,000 each and has been bankrolling holiday lessons, WAEC and JAMB fees in the last two years.

He further revealed that other individuals have pledged to offset school fees for indigent students and that the Town Union is developing a sustainability framework to ensure the scheme outlives the current administration.

He appealed to parents to pay closer attention to the academic and moral upbringing of their children and urged youths to embrace education rather than activities that bring disrepute to the community.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Ifitedunu Town Union Education Committee, Dr. Alloysius Chukwuemeka Ozuah (Udo Obodo), said the beneficiaries emerged after rigorous screening of numerous applications. He described the scholarship as an investment in the future of Ifitedunu and urged the students to remain focused and give back to society in future.

In her goodwill message, Amb. Princess Monica Enebechi urged the beneficiaries to see the scholarship as a call to responsibility and to pursue academic, moral and professional excellence.

Also speaking, Ven. Rev. Ekene Nwafor commended the sponsors for their generosity, describing the initiative as a testament to accountable leadership and genuine commitment to community development.

Awka North LGA Trains Primary School Teachers on Modern Teaching Pedagogy

The Awka North Local Government Area, under the leadership of its Chairman, Hon. ThankGod Chibuike Anago, on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, held a capacity building workshop on modern pedagogy for primary school teachers in the council area.

The workshop, facilitated by Chris Consults in partnership with the Osigwe-Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation and the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Linkage Unit, was held at Chariot Guest House, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Declaring the workshop open, the Chairman, Hon. Anago, said education remains the foundation of every society, with teachers as builders of that foundation.

Hon. Anago, who was represented by the Supervisory Councillor for Education and Development, Hon. Princess Nkiru Okeke, noted that the world is evolving and teaching methods must align with global best practices.

According to him, the workshop was deliberately organized to equip teachers with modern, innovative and learner-centred skills that will enhance classroom delivery and improve learning outcomes for pupils.

He assured that his administration is passionate about human capital development and believes that investing in teachers is investing in the future of Awka North.

Prof. Abakare described teachers as builders of all professions, adding that without teachers there would be no breakthrough in technology and humanity.

The scholar lamented that in countries like Japan and Germany, teachers are among the highest paid professionals, unlike Nigeria where politicians and oil sector workers earn more. He called for improved remuneration and regular refresher courses to enhance teachers' capacity and societal impact.

In her lecture titled, "Effective Classroom Management: Too Early to Judge a Child," Prof. Ngozi Anyikwa said children's behaviour is a form of communication influenced by genes, temperament, family circumstances, classroom conditions and peer influence.

The education expert warned that it is counter-productive to judge a child's character or long-term potential based on early behavioural challenges, listing biological, environmental, socio-psychological, media and technology factors as determinants of behaviour.

Prof. Anyikwa explained the concepts of effective classroom management and non-judgmental practice, concluding that when teachers avoid fixed labels and hasty judgment, they protect children's dignity, keep expectations high and create space for genuine growth.

In another lecture titled, "Teaching Methods for Effective Primary School Instruction," Dr. Doris Ugwude defined good teaching methodology as the purposeful selection of approaches, strategies, resources and assessment to make learning meaningful.

The scholar said methodologies should be learner-centred, interactive, inclusive, activity-based, age-appropriate and assessment-driven.

Dr. Ugwude outlined the 5Ps of good digital teaching as Purpose, Preparation, Participation, Personalization and Protection, noting that technology does not make teaching good, but good pedagogy makes technology useful.

Highpoint of the workshop was the presentation of an Award of Excellence as Pillar of Education to the Mayor of Awka North LGA, Hon. ThankGod Anago.

The event also featured an interactive question-and-answer session and appreciation remarks by participants.

Rangers International FC of Enugu on Sunday, 4th October, 2026 defeated Abia Warriors 3-1 to consolidate their lead at the top of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table.

Rangers took a deserved lead in the 37th minute through forward Godwin Obaje, who headed home for his 101st goal in the NPFL.

Chidiebere Nwobodo doubled the lead for the Flying Antelopes four minutes after the restart, slotting home from the rebound after Abia Warriors goalkeeper, Ali Ishaku, parried an effort.

The Warriors reduced the deficit in the 56th minute from the penalty spot through Obioma Chukwuemeka, after a Rangers defender was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box.

Daniel Akolade sealed victory for Rangers in stoppage time with a fine finish to ensure the home side claimed maximum points.

The match also featured a special ceremony in honour of Godwin Obaje, who was presented with a portrait commemorating his 100-goal milestone.

Nigeria at 66: TUMHS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Esimone Tasks Nigerians on Patriotism, Renewed Citizenship

The Vice-Chancellor of Transatlantic University of Medicine and Health Sciences (TUMHS) Umuchukwu, Prof. Charles Okechukwu Esimone, FAS, has said Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary should be a celebration devoid of corruption, insecurity and all vices that hinder citizens from attaining their full potential.

Prof. Esimone, the 6th substantive Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, stated this on Thursday, October 1, 2026, during the Nigeria at 66 commemoration organized by the International Friendship League at King David Hotel, Awka.

Speaking on the theme, “Transformed Citizens, Transformed Nation,” Prof. Esimone said while government has an obligation to provide good governance, citizens also have a huge responsibility in national transformation by refusing to normalize wrongdoing.

He noted that Nigeria is blessed with citizens endowed with extraordinary abilities who are thriving in all spheres of human endeavour, including health, engineering, technology, science, religion and the humanities, adding that the challenge is to create a society where excellence can thrive.

According to him, the Independence celebration is a time for honest reflection and commitment, as citizens are stakeholders, builders and custodians of the nation.

The TUMHS Vice-Chancellor further urged citizens to pray for leaders for wisdom and divine guidance for good governance, in line with biblical injunctions, and called for a renewed sense of citizenship responsibility and action.

The International Friendship League programme, which was a call to citizenship transformation, also featured an exhortation by Prof. Esimone on the topic, “The Making of a Better Person for a Better Nation,” as well as choir renditions, hymn singing and prayers for the nation.

The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), Chikelue Iloenyosi, popularly known as De General, has congratulated the four teams that qualified for the semi-finals of the ongoing 2026 Chakapain Anambra State All Stars Football Competition.

The semi-finalists are Awka Capital Elite (ACE), Evergreen FC of Awka, Estate FC of Fegge and Pro Stars FC of Onitsha.

In a congratulatory message on Sunday, Iloenyosi commended the teams for their hard work, discipline, resilience and sportsmanship which earned them places in the last four of the prestigious competition for players aged 40 and above.

The ANSFA boss noted that the quality of football displayed so far is proof that Anambra State is blessed with abundant talents even among veterans, and that class remains permanent.

He lauded the sponsor, Chakapain, for investing in grassroots and veterans football and also praised the Organizing Committee for ensuring a smooth and credible tournament.

Chakapain Anambra All Stars Cup: Estate FC Edge Golden Ballers 3-2 To Reach Semi-Finals

Estate All Stars Football Club of Onitsha have qualified for the semi-finals of the ongoing 2026 Chakapain Anambra State All Stars Football Competition.

Estate All Stars FC fought hard to defeat a resilient Golden Ballers FC 3-2 in a thrilling quarter-final encounter.

Emeka Obum bagged a brace for Estate FC with goals in the 12th and 25th minutes, while Ebuka Onwuachu netted in the 16th minute to seal the victory.

For Golden Ballers, Ebuka Okoye scored in the 13th minute, while Chinemere Nchekwube pulled one back in the 58th minute, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.

Reacting after the match, a top official of Estate FC, Chief Nonso Maurice Onuigbo, commended his side for securing the hard-fought win which earned the team its first-ever semi-final berth in the competition.

Onuigbo popularly known with the brand 'Adibe Global Limited' disclosed that the team will prepare adequately for the semi-final clash in order to secure a place in the final and keep their title hopes alive.

Also speaking, the Team Manager of Estate FC, Mr. Johnson Elendu, praised the players for their impressive display, describing the encounter as tough against a strong opposition.

Chakapain Anambra All Stars: Okeke Hits Hattrick As Awka Capital Elite Zoom Into Semi-Finals

Awka Capital Elite (ACE) have booked a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing 2026 Chakapain Anambra State All Stars Football Competition.

ACE defeated city rivals, Accord All Stars of Awka, 3-1 in a quarter-final encounter played at the Awka City Stadium on Sunday, 27th September, 2026.

Onyeka Alex Okeke was the hero of the day with a hat-trick in the 11th, 16th and 47th minutes to secure victory for his side, while Chukwudi Daniel scored the consolation goal for Accord All Stars in the 52nd minute.

Reacting after the match, the Chairman of ACE, Chief Chijioke Nwajioha, described the encounter as a competitive derby, noting that both sides showed discipline but the better team carried the day.

Nwajioha said the target is to reach the final and win the trophy, but stressed that the team will take each game one at a time. He added that the players are in high spirits and well-motivated to achieve the feat.

On his part, the Coach of ACE, Sampson Onyeji, popularly known as ‘Suarez’, thanked God for strength and good health to secure the victory. He eulogized the management led by the Chairman, Chief Nwajioha, and the coaching crew, including Maduabuchi Onwumelu, for the success recorded so far.

Onyeji said the team has adopted an approach of scoring within the first 10 minutes of every game, anchored on discipline, dedication and tactical awareness. He urged fans to continue to support the team in its quest to reach the final and lift the trophy.

UNIZIK Giants Progressive Club Robes Prof. Ufoaroh As Grand Patron At 2026 Annual Convention

The UNIZIK Giants Progressive Club has officially installed and robed Engr. Prof. Stephen Uchenna Ufoaroh as its Grand Patron.

The ceremony was held on Saturday, 26th September, 2026, at the Safehouse Villa, Golf Estate, Enugu, as part of activities marking the club's two-day 2026 Annual Convention themed, “From Vision to Impact.”

Speaking at the event, the President of the club, Comrade Engr. Emmanuel Opurum, said the convention was organized to invite the distinguished scholar to grace the landmark gathering and to formally confer on him the honour of Grand Patron.

In his acceptance address, Prof. Ufoaroh described his installation as a great honour while congratulating the leadership and members, both those physically present and those who joined online, for their conviction, unity and drive that culminated in the convention.

21 Awka Villages Jostle For Honours As Nweke Bankrolls Awka Township Football Championship With N3.6m Prize

Twenty-one villages of Awka Community will jostle for honours in the upcoming 2026 Awka Township Football Championship.

The competition is being bankrolled by Mr. Chigbo Joseph Nweke, the Executive Director of Bring It On Africa, a Non-Governmental Organization.

The tournament will kick off with an opening ceremony on Sunday, 25th October, 2026, while the grand finale is slated for Friday, 1st January, 2027.

The winner of the competition will go home with the sum of N1.8 million, while the runners-up and the third-placed team will receive N1 million and N800,000 respectively.

The draws ceremony was held on Saturday, 26th September, 2026, at Umuzocha Hall.

At the draws, Umudioka Village was drawn in Group A alongside Umuoruka, Umueri, Umudiaba-Nkwelle and Amudo.

Group B has Umuayom, Enu-Ifite, Amachalla, Umuike and Amikwo, while Group C comprises Umuokpu, Umuenechi, Umuogbunu, Agbana-Ifite and Umuonaga. Defending champions, Umuzocha, are drawn in Group D against Umukwa, Ezinafor-Ifite, Umuogbu, Achalla-Orji Nkwelle and Umubelle.

Reacting after the draw, the sponsor, Mr. Nweke, said the essence of the competition is to unite all villages in Awka through football and to steer youths away from social vices.

He noted that the championship will also provide a platform for young talents to be discovered and harnessed for professional football.

Mr. Nweke also expressed appreciation to the Anambra State Government for providing an enabling environment for sports to thrive in the state. He further thanked the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, and the Awka South Local Football Council for their support towards the competition.

He assured that the competition has come to stay as an annual event and thanked the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for its coordination, adding that the tournament will get bigger in subsequent editions with expected support from multinational organizations.

Highpoints of the ceremony were the presentation of sets of jerseys to the 21 village representatives, a competition lecture by the LOC Chairman, Mr. Ikechukwu Nwimoh, and distribution of competition rules.

The 6-member LOC comprises Ikechukwu Nwimoh as Chairman, Chuks Ndigwe who conducted the draws, Chika Nzekwe, Kenneth Anachuna, Onyeka Eze and Emeka Anosike.

Anambra Government Begins Statewide Registration, Retraining and Certification of Sports Personnel

The Anambra State Government has announced the commencement of a mandatory statewide data capturing, registration, retraining and certification exercise for all Sports Instructors, Sports Officers, Coaches and Sports Administrators operating in the state.

The Honourable Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, disclosed this on Thursday, 24th September, 2026, during a press conference held in Awka.

Mr. Agha Mba said the exercise is a strategic step by the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to reposition sports as a tool for youth empowerment, employment generation, talent discovery, grassroots development and social cohesion in line with the Solution Agenda.

The Anambra Sports Boss said preliminary checks by the Ministry revealed that a significant number of individuals operating as sports instructors and administrators in schools, academies, clubs and fitness centres across the state are not formally registered with the Ministry.

Agha Mba said: "For us to achieve the objectives of Solution 2.0 in the sports sector, we must build a strong and sustainable foundation at the grassroots.

We cannot have a vibrant and competitive sports ecosystem without competent, properly trained, registered and certified personnel," Agha Mba stated.

The Commissioner announced that from Tuesday 29th to Wednesday 30th September, 2026, registration forms will be available for collection at the 21 Local Government Headquarters across the state, where Sports Desk Officers will guide applicants and receive completed forms. He added that officials of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service will also be deployed to the centres.

According to him, all registered personnel will undergo a mandatory refresher and retraining workshop covering sports administration, coaching principles, safety, first aid, anti-doping, safeguarding and ethics, as well as specialized technical sessions.

"At the conclusion of the retraining programme, participants who successfully complete the process will be duly certified by the Ministry," he said, stressing that certification will henceforth serve as a professional requirement for practice in public institutions and sports facilities in the state.

To ensure accessibility, the retraining and certification will be held across the three senatorial zones - Anambra Central in Awka, Anambra North in Onitsha, and Anambra South in Aguata. Agha Mba called on all sports practitioners in schools, tertiary institutions, private academies, fitness centres and community clubs to participate, noting that "the future of Anambra sports begins at the grassroots."

Anambra Central Women Declare Support for Dozie Nwankwo's Senate Bid

Women representatives from the seven local government areas of Anambra Central Senatorial Zone on Monday, September 21, 2026, gathered at the Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo Centre for Development and ICT to declare their support for Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo, popularly known as Onyendozi.

The women, led by Hon. Njideka Oraedum, said Onyendozi has been a source of support for many women for over two decades, both before and during his tenure as a member of the House of Representatives. She disclosed that the women have resolved to back his candidacy throughout the campaign and vote for him on election day.

Oraedum described Nwankwo as a philanthropist of exceptional character who used his legislative position to improve the lives of his constituents.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Anaocha Local Government Area, Hon. Romanus Ibekwe (Ezeugo Anaocha), commended the women for the endorsement and urged them to remain steadfast in taking the Onyendozi message to the grassroots.
