Prof. Okolie Assures Academic Standards Won't Drop at UNIZIK Pre-Degree Centre

The Director of the Pre-Degree Programme at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Engr. Prof. Paul Okolie, says the university has built a cordial relationship with the Mbaukwu community to ensure safety and smooth academic operations at the programme’s study centre.

Speaking during an interview with Journalists at his office, Prof. Okolie, who is also a member of the UNIZIK Governing Council, said the centre now works closely with the community vigilance group in addition to its own security structure.

"Before I came on board, we heard reports of students’ phones being stolen. Under my watch, that has not happened. We have a very cordial relationship with the community," Prof. Okolie said.

The Director noted that the influx of about 2,000 Pre-Degree and JUPEB students to the centre from September will bring economic benefits to Mbaukwu.

The scholar assured
the university community that academic standards at the centre will not drop but will improve. According to him, many Pre-Degree students have already scored above 300 in JAMB.

"JAMB does not recognize Pre-Degree, so our students must still meet the national cut-off. They are also required to score at least 200 in the Pre-Degree exams to qualify for admission into UNIZIK. The evidence so far shows we are on the right track," Prof. Okolie assured.

The Pre-Degree Director said the recent approval for JUPEB to commence at Mbaukwu, the improved infrastructure and better welfare for lecturers were all aimed at creating a conducive learning environment.

"Once the environment is conducive, learning is achieved. I believe we are building that environment," he added.

The Mbaukwu centre, established to run UNIZIK’s Pre-Degree programme, is expected to begin academic activities for JUPEB students in September 2026.

UNIZIK Pre-Degree Director, Prof. Okolie, Drives Transformation at Centre With Solar Powered Classrooms, New Facilities

The Pre-Degree Study Centre of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, at Mbaukwu has undergone significant transformation in the last one year, with the installation of solar-powered infrastructure and new student facilities.

Director of the Pre-Degree Programme, Engr. Prof. Paul Okolie, who disclosed this during an interview in Awka, said the intervention has ended years of learning difficulties at the centre.

Prof. Okolie, who assumed office on June 3, 2025, under the then Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, said he met a centre grappling with poor power supply, inadequate conveniences and lack of kitchen facilities.

"Students could not attend night classes because the area had no streetlights. Some were cooking inside hostels because there was no kitchen. The conveniences were also not enough," Prof. Okolie said.

The Professor of Mechanical Engineering and a member of the Governing Council noted that he made formal requests to management for a kitchen, additional conveniences, solar lighting, fencing of hostels for security and solar power for classrooms. The requests, he said, received approval from the then Acting VC.

"Today, under my watch, we have 100 solar-powered streetlights illuminating the entire compound, solar lighting installed in classrooms to enable night reading, a newly constructed kitchen, and new conveniences for both staff and students," Prof. Okolie stated.

He added that the centre also now has water reticulation with shower facilities and flushing water closets, a development he said has greatly improved hygiene and comfort for students.

The Director further disclosed that his administration has digitalized the application process for admission into the Pre-Degree programme to make it faster and more accessible for applicants.

On staff welfare, Prof. Okolie said teachers’ honoraria have been increased, while wages for casual workers have also been improved to boost morale and productivity.

The scholar added that the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, further approved solar-powered systems with inverters for two large classrooms to enable night reading and charging of devices.

Prof. Okolie also disclosed that the university has approved the take-off of the JUPEB programme at the Mbaukwu centre this September, describing it as a major milestone.

With both Pre-Degree and JUPEB students expected to bring the population at the centre to about 2,000, the Director expressed optimism that the upgrade will improve academic performance and benefit the host community.

UNIZIK, Kigali Independent University Seal Academic Partnership Deal

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kigali Independent University (ULK) Rwanda, to expand joint teaching, research and student exchange programmes across Africa.

The virtual signing ceremony held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, formalized a draft agreement first drawn up in April. The pact sets the foundation for both universities to work together in STEM, Education, Humanities, Management and the Social Sciences.

Speaking during the ceremony, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, said the partnership aligns with the university’s drive to strengthen global academic ties and boost research output. He was joined by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Alex Asigbo; University Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke; University Librarian, Prof. Jacinta Eze and Director of International Collaboration and Linkages, Prof. Charles Nwadigwe.

Prof. Anyaehie gave an overview of UNIZIK’s academic programmes, campuses and affiliate institutions, noting that the collaboration with ULK will open new opportunities for knowledge exchange and capacity building on the continent.

For ULK, the MoU was signed by Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Martins Onyekwelu Onuorah.

Under the agreement, both institutions will co-host conferences, workshops, seminars, exhibitions and short professional courses. They will also exchange academic publications, develop joint curricula, and pursue collaborative research aimed at addressing societal challenges.

Other key provisions include exchange of faculty and administrative staff, undergraduate and postgraduate student exchange, joint supervision of Masters and PhD research, and cultural exchange programmes.

To manage the partnership, each university will appoint an MoU Coordinator. Regular review meetings will be held to track progress and explore new areas of cooperation. The agreement also protects intellectual property arising from joint research and does not place any direct financial obligation on either institution. Both schools, however, can seek grants and external funding to support joint projects.

The MoU will run for an initial period of five years and may be renewed by mutual agreement. It also includes provisions for amicable resolution of disputes.

Prof. Anyaehie described the deal as another step in UNIZIK’s internationalization agenda, adding that it will enhance academic mobility and innovation for staff and students.

ULK’s Prof. Onuorah said the university looks forward to leveraging UNIZIK’s expertise to strengthen teaching and research in Rwanda and across East Africa.

With this agreement, UNIZIK adds ULK to its growing list of international partners as the university pushes to position itself as a hub for collaborative research and cross-border education in Africa.

Fegge All Stars Beat Holy Spirit 2-1 In Curtain Raiser Of 2026 Chakapain Anambra All Stars Competition

Defending champions, Fegge All Stars, defeated Holy Spirit All Stars FC 2-1 in the opening match of the 2026 Chakapain Anambra State All Stars Competition on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the Awka City Stadium.

Moses Akazojie’s goal in the 9th minute and Emmanuel Chimeobi’s superb finish gave Fegge All Stars the lead, while Amaechi Ofojede’s brilliant strike in the 67th minute was not enough to earn Holy Spirit All Stars a point.

A total of 25 All Stars clubs are participating in the 2026 edition of the competition, bankrolled by Chief Patrick Onwuelingo, Chairman/CEO of Patricklingo Pharmaceutical Company Ltd.

Declaring the competition open, the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, who was represented by the Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, ANSFA, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, commended Patricklingo Pharmaceutical Ltd for sponsoring the competition aimed at uniting ex-professional footballers above the age of 40 years and promoting healthy living through sports.

Agha Mba thanked the Anambra State Government under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo for providing the necessary sporting facilities and an enabling environment for sports to thrive in the state.

In his remarks, Chief Onwuelingo, who was represented by Chief Chinenye Ezeagu, said the competition is aimed at promoting good health and encouraging sports participation among veterans who have contributed to the growth of the beautiful game.

He promised to further enhance the competition and urged participating teams to adhere to the ethos of the game for a hitch-free tournament.

The opening ceremony also featured a march past and ceremonial kick-off performed by the sponsor, Chief Onwuelingo, Chief Iloenyosi, and ZESCO United FC of Zambia forward, Chijioke Alaekwe.

Anambra Sports Commission Joins NOC Sports Medicine Seminar, Pledges Better Healthcare For Athletes

The Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to improved healthcare delivery for athletes following its participation in the Olympic Solidarity/Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Sports Medicine Seminar Course in Edo State.

The three-day seminar, held from Monday, June 22 to Wednesday, June 25, 2026, was organized by Olympic Solidarity and the NOC Medical and Scientific Commission under the theme, “Fueling the Female Champion: Understanding the Female Athlete Triad and RED-S in Adolescent Athletes.”

Representing Anambra State at the intensive capacity-building programme were Mrs. Ngozi Nwegwu, Chief Nurse of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, and Favour Nnagbo also of the Commission.

The seminar brought together 12 facilitators, 77 participants on-site and 20 online. Delegates were drawn from sports medicine, physiotherapy, nutrition, psychology, coaching, anti-doping and sports administration across Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun and other states.

Speaking on behalf of the Anambra delegation, Mrs. Ngozi Nwegwu thanked Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo for his continued support towards the medical line in the state.

She also eulogized the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, for his support in ensuring the Commission’s participation in the seminar and appreciated the ASSDC Director, Mr. Emeka Obidimma, for his leadership.

The seminar concluded with a renewed commitment to promote safer, healthier and more empowering sporting environments for female athletes across Nigeria.

The NOC, Olympic Solidarity and the NOC Medical and Scientific Commission were commended for prioritizing female athlete health, welfare and empowerment.

Olympic Day Walk: Sports Boss, Agha Mba Rallies Ndi Anambra in Awka

Sports-loving residents of Anambra State on Saturday, July 11, 2026, trooped out in large numbers to participate in this year’s Olympic Day Walk.

The Anambra edition of the global event was organized by the State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development under the leadership of the Commissioner, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba.

The walk, which commenced at 7:00 am from the ABS gate, saw over 500 persons walk in solidarity with the Olympic Movement through the expressway to the Awka City Stadium. The exercise culminated in an aerobics session to round off the day’s activities.

Describing the event, Mr. Agha Mba said Olympic Day Celebration is a global event commemorating the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on June 23, 1894. He noted that the event promotes the values of the Olympic Movement through its three pillars: Move, Learn and Discover.

Addressing the gathering at the stadium, Mr. Agha Mba described the day as special, noting that it is celebrated across Nigeria and the world to promote the Olympic spirit and values of unity, togetherness, physical fitness, and sporting excellence.

He commended Ndi Anambra for the massive turnout and conveyed the assurance of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR, that "Anambra is in for better days."

Mr. Agha Mba also eulogized Gov. Soludo for the completion of the ultra-modern Ekwulobia Township Stadium, with other facilities including the Country Club, stating that the facility will further enhance sports participation and meaningfully engage the youth through sports.

The Commissioner assured that the Olympic Day Walk would not be a one-off event, pledging that the Ministry would continue to hold it regularly to promote grassroots sports, healthy living, physical fitness, respect and strong values.

Also speaking, a representative of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) and veteran sports journalist, Jennifer Okoye, praised participants for joining the commemoration. She said the Olympic Day is aimed at promoting the Olympic spirit and encouraging healthy living among citizens.

The high point of the event was the presentation of Certificates of Participation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to participants.

UNIZIK, EMENITE Partner to Boost Practical Training for Architecture Students

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka is deepening its industry-academia link with EMENITE Company Limited, Enugu, to expose Architecture students to modern building technologies through a planned Product Seminar for Young Specifiers.

Representatives of EMENITE and scholars from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Environmental Sciences of the institution visited the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, to brief him on the initiative and seek institutional support.

Receiving the delegation, Prof. Anyaehie commended the partnership, saying it aligns with UNIZIK’s goal of producing graduates who combine academic excellence with practical industry skills. The VC stressed that university-industry collaborations are vital for innovation, research, and graduate employability.

In her remarks, the Head of Department of Architecture, Dr. Lynda Chinwendu Mbadugha, said the seminar will introduce students to emerging trends, innovative design concepts, and best practices, with focus on EMENITE’s roofing and building products. She noted that the engagement will help bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice.

VC Prof. Anyaehie Pledges to Clear UNIZIK Salary Backlog, Says Payroll Resolution Imminent

In a renewed commitment to staff welfare, the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Awka, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has promised to ensure total resolution of the unpaid salary issue affecting some staff employed in 2019 and 2020.

The assurance was given on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, when a delegation of the affected staff paid him an appreciation visit at his office. The group said the visit was to acknowledge the progress made under his leadership, which has already led to the commencement of salary payments for part of the affected workforce.

Mrs. Kenechukwu Jane Ejim, who spoke for the delegation, praised the Vice-Chancellor’s proactive steps and steadfast commitment. According to her, his interventions have restored hope to many families that had waited for years in uncertainty. She, however, urged the administration not to relent until the last set of unpaid staff are captured on the university payroll.

In his response, Prof. Anyaehie expressed gratitude for the visit and commended the staff for their patience and resilience. He noted that the challenge was inherited by his administration, but remains a key priority on his agenda.

The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that arrangements are already in motion to onboard another batch of the affected staff onto the payroll. He stressed that his goal is to achieve 100% inclusion of all eligible staff into the university’s salary structure, and that efforts are ongoing to bring the matter to a permanent close.

The visit ended on a celebratory note with the presentation of an appreciation plaque to the Vice-Chancellor, followed by jubilation from the delegation over the progress recorded so far.

Sports Commissioner, Agha Mba Congratulates Iloenyosi on Re-Election as ANSFA Chairman

Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, Honourable Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, has congratulated Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi on his resounding re-election as Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, ANSFA, describing the victory as a vote of confidence in his first-term record.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, the Honourable Commissioner said the result affirms the “incredible milestones, transparency, and grassroots football transformation” recorded under Iloenyosi’s leadership.

“Your victory is not just a testament to your visionary leadership, but a clear affirmation of the progress recorded during your first tenure,” Agha Mba stated.

He added that Iloenyosi has lived up to his moniker, “The General,” by leading the charge to revive football across Anambra’s 21 LGAs.

The Commissioner noted that the Ministry, under Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has enjoyed a robust partnership with ANSFA. Together, they have created new pathways for youth to thrive through sports.

“As you step into this new chapter, we are confident that your experience, passion, and love for football will take Anambra sports to even greater heights,” Agha Mba said.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to collaborate with ANSFA to deliver the government’s “Solution Bigger Agenda” for youth and sports development.

Iloenyosi is expected to build on existing programs with renewed focus on school sports, talent discovery, and strengthening local leagues.

Iloenyosi Re-elected Unopposed as ANSFA Chairman

Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi has been re-elected as Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) at the association’s elective congress held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

Iloenyosi secured a second term unopposed, polling all 23 votes from the 23 accredited delegates in a seamless exercise.

In the contest for Vice-Chairman, Johnson Ifejika defeated incumbent Sir Victor Aniekwena with 19 votes to 4.

Other elected board members include Obi Moneke and Ralph Chidozie George for Anambra Central Zone. For Anambra North Zone, Michael Igbeke and Emmanuel Azubuike Okeke emerged victorious. Anambra South Zone will be represented by Prince Michael Mbaezue, Donatus Ezeokafor, and Pastor Ijeoma Nwosu, a retired FIFA-badged referee.

ASUU Owerri Zone Decries Delay in 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement at COOU, IMSU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri Zone, has decried the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement in Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) Igbariam and Imo State University (IMSU) Owerri more than five months after the agreement took effect.

The union made the disclosure on Monday, 29th June 2026, during a press conference held at ASUU NAU Secretariat, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Addressing journalists, the Zonal Coordinator, Comrad Dennis Aribodor, said the agreement is yet to be implemented in the two state-owned universities under the zone, notably COOU owned by the Anambra State Government and IMSU owned by the Imo State Government.

Comrade Aribodor noted that branches of ASUU in both universities submitted the 2025 agreement to their respective administrations in February 2026, in line with the directive of the National Executive Council of ASUU. The Union leader added that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had earlier communicated the agreement to the Visitors of the two universities and their Vice-Chancellors for implementation.

According to him, despite engagements with university authorities, governing councils and administrations, implementation has not commenced in COOU and IMSU. He described the situation as “bad and sad” for the university system.

The Zonal Coordinator lamented that while several state universities including those owned by Bauchi, Benue, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun and Sokoto states have begun implementation, Anambra and Imo states are yet to do so.

ASUU Owerri Zone therefore called on well-meaning Nigerians, traditional and religious institutions, civil society organisations, parents, students, and other stakeholders to prevail on the Anambra and Imo State Governors to commence implementation of the agreement to sustain industrial harmony.

“Continued delay of the implementation serves no useful purpose and only aggravates industrial tension within the affected universities. ASUU Owerri Zone cannot continue to watch while our members in state universities are subjected to poor welfare conditions. Injury to one is injury to all! A stitch in time saves nine,” Aribodor said.

In their separate remarks, the Chairpersons of ASUU-COOU, Comrade Bruno Ibekilo, and ASUU-IMSU, Comrade Stephen Oguji, urged the state governments to act promptly and address the welfare concerns of their members.

Anambra Youth Commissioner Wins ‘Best Commissioner in Nigeria’ at National Leadership Awards

The Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Agha Mba, has been named the ‘Best Commissioner in Nigeria’ at the National Leadership Awards.

The award was presented to him on Thursday, 25th June 2026, during the ceremony held at the Maitama Event Centre, Abuja.

In his remarks after receiving the award, Mba thanked the organizers for the recognition. He dedicated the award to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo for his visionary and youth-friendly leadership.

Mba noted that under Gov. Soludo’s administration, youth development has been placed at the centre of the Anambra Transformational Agenda. He said the initiative reflects the governor’s unwavering commitment to building a prosperous and productive future for Anambra youths through programmes that raise youthpreneurs, tech professionals, and sports professionals.

The National Leadership Awards recognize outstanding public officials across Nigeria for excellence in service delivery, innovation, and impact in their respective ministries.

Anambra Football Coaches Hail Performance Analysis Workshop as Educative, Innovative

Football coaches, managers, and administrators in Anambra State have described the two-day Sports Performance Analysis Workshop as educative, enriching, and innovative.

The stakeholders made the remarks on Saturday, 27th June 2026, at the Archbishop Obiefuna Pastoral and Retreat Centre, Okpuno, Awka. The workshop was organized by the Anambra State Football Coaches Association (ANSFOCA) in collaboration with Binary Sports Tech and the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA).

A total of 44 participants, including professional coaches, scouts, and managers, attended the programme. Facilitators were Dr. Isah Ladan Bosso, President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association; Mr. Idris Okeke, Founder of Binary Sports and expert in sports performance analysis; and Mr. Buhari Yusuf Makusidi, Lead Consultant at Binary Sports.

In his address, ANSFA Chairman, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, said the workshop was designed to build the capacity of coaches and scouts in the state after the Level 1 edition held last year. He described it as a step in the right direction to align Anambra coaches with global best practices.

Iloenyosi urged participants to maximize the opportunity to improve their competences and capabilities. He also thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for creating an enabling environment for football development in Anambra owing to adequate security architecture while also commending the Honourable Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Patrick Agha Mba for his visionary step in transforming the sports sector in the state.

Speaking to journalists, ANSFA Board Member and Technical Director of Dynamic Sports Academy, Aguluzigbo, Donatus Ezeokafor, described the workshop as unique and informative. He said it equipped him with knowledge on recent trends in coaching and methodologies for building competitive teams.

Coach Chuks Ndigwe, Head Coach of Oriental FC Awka, said the training enriched him with modern tactics and models. “Football has gone scientific. I will apply the knowledge gained to help my team achieve greater heights,” he stated.

Also speaking, Coach Emmanuel Azubuike Okeke of DOSAD FA, Enugwu-Ukwu, said the workshop was insightful and revealed the models behind the success of top European clubs. “I am now better equipped to deliver results and take my team to the next level,” he said.

Head Coach of DOSCADEK FA, Achina, Rev. Fr. Christian Umeojilinaka, noted that the workshop taught him the importance of data collection and application in football analysis. He pledged to use the knowledge in managing a professional club.

Technical Director of DOSCADEK FA, Rev. Fr. Damian Ogwatta, said the programme would elevate the status of Anambra coaches and administrators. He commended ANSFA and ANSFOCA for their commitment to capacity building.

In his vote of thanks, ANSFOCA Chairman, Evang. Obi Moneke, said the workshop opened a new vista of knowledge in football analysis and match reading. He described it as the first in a continuous series aimed at empowering Anambra coaches.

Moneke thanked participants for their commitment, commended Mr. Idris Okeke for his insights, and acknowledged Chief Iloenyosi for approving the programme.

The workshop concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants by the ANSFA Chairman, followed by photo sessions.

ANSFOCA, Binary Sports Launch Level 2 Workshop for 44 Anambra Coaches, Scouts

A two-day advanced workshop on Sports Performance Analysis and Coaching Development kicked off on Friday, 26th June 2026 in Awka, Anambra State.

The programme, organized by the Anambra State Football Coaches Association (ANSFOCA) in collaboration with Binary Sports Tech and the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), drew 44 participants including professional coaches, scouts, match readers, and analysts.

The two-day workshop which is holding at the Archbishop Obiefuna Pastoral and Retreat Centre, will run from Friday, 26th June to Saturday, 27th June 2026.

Facilitators for the session are Dr. Isah Ladan Bosso, President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association; Mr. Idris Okeke, Founder of Binary Sports and expert in performance analysis and Mr. Buhari Yusuf Makusidi, Lead Coordinator at Binary Sports.

In his opening remarks, ANSFOCA Chairman, Evang. Obi Moneke, said the workshop is designed to update Anambra coaches with modern trends in the game. He described it as a follow-up to last year’s Level 1 workshop, which improved participants’ skills in match reading, analysis, and data collection.

According to Moneke, the Level 2 training will build on existing knowledge with day one focusing on theory, data collection, and reading games in phases of play, while day two will be practical and hands-on. He urged participants to be attentive to fully assimilate the knowledge. Moneke, who also serves as Team Manager of Peace FC, a Nigeria Nationwide League Division One club, thanked ANSFA Chairman, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, for the association’s support.

Also speaking, Binary Sports Founder, Mr. Idris Okeke, said last year’s session introduced grassroots coaches to the basics of performance analysis. This year’s workshop, he noted, advances to modern techniques, tactical trends and performance metrics.

The veteran professional match analyst explained that day one will introduce key performance indicators for defense, attack, and transition, with emphasis on coaching players from U-6 to U-12 using FIFA standards, data, and performance matrices. Day two will cover match analysis reports, video analysis, and the use of video evidence and expected goals (xG) to improve player performance.

Okeke commended ANSFA and ANSFOCA for their foresight in driving capacity building for coaches in the state.

Topics to be covered in the workshop include tactical analysis, advanced match reporting, ball possession concepts, expected goals, video analysis, session planning, and spatial/positional analysis.

CACORP, Teva Foods Launch Tree Planting Drive At UNIZIK For Climate Action

The Centre for Agripreneur and Cooperative Research Practice (CACORP), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, in collaboration with Teva Foods, Jos, Plateau State, on Tuesday, 23rd June 2026, flagged off a tree planting exercise to commemorate the 2026 International Day.

With the theme, “Planting Trees for Posterity, Climate Action and Prosperity”, the programme was held at the Board Room of the Faculty of Management Sciences, UNIZIK.

Declaring the event open, the UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, urged Nigerians to embrace farming to boost food production, afforestation, job creation and ecosystem protection.

Represented by the former ASUU-UNIZIK Chairperson, Engr. Prof. Stephen Ufoaroh, the Vice-Chancellor commended CACORP for promoting agricultural values. Prof. Anyaehie assured the Centre of the current administration’s support and pledged to strengthen the university’s collaboration with Teva Foods.

In his welcome address, the Director of CACORP, Dr. Nma Okechukwu Okoroji, said the Centre’s vision is to be a world-class hub for agripreneurship and cooperative development. The scholar noted that CACORP drives sustainable livelihoods, food security, and rural transformation in Nigeria and Africa through research, training, and enterprise development.

Dr. Okoroji listed CACORP’s achievements, including training over 2,500 students, youths, and farmers on cooperative management, agripreneurship, climate-smart agriculture and value chain development. She also cited progress in cooperative strengthening, research and demonstration farms, partnerships, and policy advocacy.

Quoting Genesis 2:15, she described tree planting as “divine” and encouraged investment in agriculture for food security and economic growth. The CACORP Director also appreciated Teva Foods and the VC for their support.

The Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Francis Nwankwo, said the tree planting flag-off reflects UNIZIK’s commitment to food security, agricultural innovation, and national development. The Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences commended Dr. Okoroji for her leadership in advancing agripreneurship and cooperative development.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Ben Odoemena, described the theme as timely. Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Chinyere Nwabachili, he said tree planting and climate action must align with sustainable agribusiness. He added that the Ministry is pursuing private sector engagement, irrigation-led production, and competitive value chains under the state’s industrialisation agenda.

Guest Lecturer and Co-Founder/CEO of Teva Foods, Chima Christian, said Nigeria has 10.9 billion trees, which play a key role in regulating carbon emissions. He lamented the underutilisation of the resource, which contributes to food waste and urged Nigerians to acquire agricultural skills to boost food production and revenue.

In their goodwill messages, the State Chairman of NACOPPMAN, Hon. Emily Uzor, advocated coconut planting for revenue and afforestation. Rev. Elvis Okolie stressed skills development as the most valuable form of wealth creation. Mrs. Angela Uche-Echieh, State Coordinator of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, called for massive investment in agriculture for socio-economic development.

Also speaking, the Anambra State Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, High Chief Arthur Mbuba, said the collaboration with UNIZIK had been strengthened and assured of more federal initiatives to promote agriculture.

High points of the ceremony was the official tree planting by the Vice-Chancellor. Coconut seedlings from CACORP were also distributed to guests, and a memorabilia was presented to the Teva Foods CEO for his leadership in agripreneurship, youth empowerment, and climate action.

Otu Omenala Ojoto Protests ‘Arbitrary’ Changes to Festival Dates, Seeks Soludo’s Intervention

Members of Otu Omenala Ojoto Akanasato staged a peaceful protest at the Light House, Awka on Friday, 19th June 2026 urging the Anambra State Government to reverse what they described as arbitrary changes to the dates of traditional festivals in Ojoto community domiciled in Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.

Led by Chairman Chief Anthony Uzokwe, the protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as: “Omenala Ojoto ga-adịrị,” “Our Custom, Our Pride,” “The Dates of Our Festivals Cannot Be Changed Arbitrarily,” “Ojoto Customs and Traditions Are Not for Sale,” and “The Certificate Given by Government Is to Protect and Not Destroy.”

Speaking to journalists, Chief Uzokwe said the Ifejioku and Egwueke festivals have fixed dates and seasons that have been observed for generations. He alleged that the traditional ruler of Ojoto, Igwe Gerald Mbamalu, adjusted the dates without proper consultation to accommodate indigenes living at home and in the diaspora.

According to Uzokwe, the changes have created tension and division in the town. He appealed to Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to intervene and protect Ojoto’s customs, which he described as a heritage preserved for decades.

Receiving the protesters on behalf of the State Government, Chief of Staff to the Anambra State Government, Dr. Ben Nwankwo, alongside the State Chief of Protocol, Prof. Frank-Collins Okafor, and other government officials, accepted their letter and assured them that their concerns would be reviewed.

Dr. Nwankwo said Igwe Mbamalu would be invited for discussions to reach an amicable resolution. He stressed that tradition embodies the established way of life and practices of a people and must be preserved.

He commended the group for conducting the protest peacefully and urged members to remain law-abiding while awaiting the government’s response.

Anambra VB Queens Secure Record 4th Straight Win at 3rd CGC Volleyball Tournament

Anambra Volleyball Queens clinched their fourth consecutive victory at the ongoing 3rd Customs Comptroller-General (CGC) Volleyball Premier League, defeating Kaduna Emerald Female VB Team 3-0 on Sunday, 21st June 2026, at the tournament venue in Abuja.

The Queens delivered another commanding performance to maintain their momentum in the tournament.

Anambra began their campaign with a 3-2 win over Abia VB Queens, before edging Benue Queens VB by the same 3-2 scoreline.

They later recorded a 3-0 victory against Life Camp Volleyball Club, with set scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-23, prior to Sunday’s win over Kaduna Emerald.

With four wins from four matches, Anambra VB Queens are not top of their group but are in a very strong position to win in the female category of this 3rd edition of the CGC Volleyball Premier League.

The team will be aiming to extend their winning streak in their next fixture.

UNIZIK Accountancy Department Kicks Off 7th International Conference on Africa’s Future

The Department of Accountancy, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Awka, on Wednesday, 17th June 2026, flagged off its two-day 7th International Hybrid Conference at the ASUU Secretariat, UNIZIK.

With the theme, “Shaping Africa’s Future through Accounting, Governance, Technology and Sustainable Business Management", the conference convened scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders to interrogate the continent’s development challenges.

Declaring the conference open, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, said the event offered an opportunity to push the frontiers of knowledge. He noted that the Accountancy Department has the capacity to become a faculty, having birthed four course programmes from the mother department.

Prof. Anyaehie added that for industry partners, the conference was a chance to share real-world problems that research could solve, while for students, it was a masterclass in responsible leadership.

In his chairman’s opening remarks, Special Adviser to the Anambra State Government on Investment, Mr. Christian Udechukwu, said the theme came at a critical time. He noted that Africa stands at a crossroads where transparency, accountability, and innovation will determine whether its vast potentials translate into lasting prosperity. The former Commissioner for Industry added that accounting is no longer just about numbers but a language of trust that underpins governance and public confidence.

The Head of Department, Prof. Onyinye Eneh, said the theme reflects some of the most pressing issues confronting the continent as it pursues sustainable growth and economic transformation. She stressed that UNIZIK remains committed to advancing knowledge, promoting innovation, and fostering partnerships for national and continental development.

The Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Francis Nwankwo, described accounting as the language of business and a vital tool for economic growth. He stated that when complemented by sound governance, emerging technologies, and sustainable business practices, accounting becomes a powerful driver of institutional effectiveness and societal progress.

Delivering the keynote, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, emphasized that without reliable financial information, governments cannot budget effectively, investors cannot trust markets, and citizens cannot demand performance. He called for inclusive, data-driven governance and urged accounting and governance professionals to be tech-literate to achieve sustainable business management.

Former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Chief Osita Chidoka, in a lead paper, spoke on, “Governance as the Foundation of Africa’s Future,” highlighting the role of governance in societal development and accounting in sustainable models across sectors.

Other lead paper presenters included Major General Charles Ofoche (Rtd), former Director-General of the Armed Forces Research and Development Bureau, and Prof. Suleiman Aruwa, Professor of Accounting and Finance, Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

Business leaders, financial experts, and policy influencers have emphasized the need for enterprise leadership in Nigeria and across the continent anchored on innovation, education and sustainability.

The call was made at the Pre-Conference Symposium of the Department of Accountancy, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, held on Tuesday, 16th June 2026 at the UNIZIK Business School with the theme, “From Vision to Legacy: Inspiring Africa’s Next Generation of Responsible Business Leaders.”

Declaring the symposium open, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, said the event created a synergy between town and gown with the presence of industry leaders.

The VC who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Alex Asigbo noted that the symposium was essential for inspiring young entrepreneurs. The scholar commended the department for the initiative and reaffirmed the university’s readiness to partner with industry and provide institutional support.

In her remarks, the Head of the Department of Accountancy, Prof. Onyinye Eneh, said the theme was deliberately chosen to reflect enterprise development through visionary leadership and innovation. She added that the event provided a platform for experts in business, finance, and policy to cross-fertilize ideas and enrich educational pedagogy.

Dr. Chienye Okafor, SAN, who moderated the session, said such engagements strengthen the town-and-gown relationship and highlight the role of education in enterprise development.

Delivering the keynote, the GMD/CEO of VFD Group Plc, Mr. Nonso Okpala, listed key variables for responsible enterprise development: a solid work plan, a dedicated team, scalability, good record-keeping, wealth management mindset, and corporate social responsibility. He commended the department for sustaining the dialogue.

Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake, Secretary to the Anambra State Government, in her remarks spoke on ethical leadership and its role in human capital development. She urged successful firms to support education and societal growth.

Other speakers also made contributions to the discourse were Dr. Tonna Ejiofor, Head of Debt Solutions & Financial Advisory at FirstCap Ltd, who identified actionable planning, prudent resource management, innovation and record-keeping as key to enterprise growth.

Mr. Sampson Aneke, Directorate Head, East Directorate, UBA Plc, stated that hard work and smart innovation were critical to success and outlined loan requirements for credible organizations.

Sports Commissioner, Agha Mba Dissolves Solution FC Management, Appoints Iloenyosi As Supervisor

The Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, has dissolved the entire management structure of Solution Football Club with immediate effect.

The directive was conveyed to club officials and staff on Thursday, 11th June 2026, during a meeting convened by the Commissioner. He was represented by the Director of Sports, Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Mr. Emeka Obidimma, at the ASSDC office in Awka.

Announcing the decision, Mr. Obidimma said the dissolution affects all members of the management, technical crew, and other staff of the club.

“In line with the Commissioner’s directive, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, has been appointed to stand in as Supervisor for Solution FC on an interim basis,” Obidimma stated.

“This arrangement will remain in place pending the appointment of a substantive chairman and the constitution of a new management team.”

He further directed all club officials currently in possession of Solution FC properties and assets to hand them over to the ASSDC Director with immediate effect.

The move is part of efforts to reposition the club in line with the Soludo administration’s “Solution Agenda” for sports development in Anambra State.

Chief Iloenyosi is expected to supervise, advise and oversee the day-to-day running of the team until a new management team is constituted.

Solution FC is owned by the Anambra State Government and currently competes in the second tier of Nigerian Professional club football, the Nigeria National League (NNL).

Prof. Okonkwo Urges Local Content Push at UNIZIK 126th Inaugural Lecture

The need for stronger university-industry collaboration and increased local content in Nigeria’s engineering sector topped discussions as Engr. Prof. Ugochukwu Chuka Okonkwo delivered the 126th Inaugural Lecture of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) on Thursday, 11th June 2026.

The lecture titled, "The Engineer, Materials and Machines Tributaries with Novelties," was presented by the Professor of Mechanical Design and Materials Technology and Dean, Faculty of Engineering, at the Zephaniah Madubuko Auditorium, Faculty of Social Sciences, UNIZIK.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Okonkwo described an engineer as a person professionally trained to apply scientific knowledge, mathematics and ingenuity to develop products or processes useful to society.

He noted that materials are the “first language of innovation” upon which every engineering breakthrough is anchored, especially in the current era where smart materials, composites, biomaterials, metamaterials and nano-structured substances are redefining the limits of scientific creation.

On machines, the 126th Inaugural Lecturer highlighted that they no longer merely obey commands but now interpret, adapt and collaborate.

Prof. Okonkwo stressed that enhancing productivity and efficiency in engineering requires more than improved materials and machines. He said engineers must thoroughly examine operations within engineering systems and subsystems to achieve optimal performance.

Drawing from his research, the scholar recommended strong university-industry-research institute synergy to drive end-user-focused engineering research. He also proposed that 30 percent of machine components in critical sectors should be sourced locally, while calling on the Federal Government to revitalize the Ajaokuta Steel Complex with clear timelines.

Earlier, while declaring the event open, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, described inaugural lectures as core to university culture and a platform for professors to showcase research in their fields.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Hilda Osisioma, the Vice-Chancellor assured of management’s continued support for teaching, research and community service.

Also speaking, a member of the Inaugural Lecture Committee, Engr. Prof. Joseph Nwabanne, described the 126th lecture as unique because the presenter is the current Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. He commended Prof. Okonkwo for his academic achievements.

The highpoint of the occasion was the decoration of the Inaugural Lecturer with the University’s Medal of Honour by the Vice-Chancellor.

UNIZIK Holds 12th Ogbalu Memorial Lecture, Calls for Greater Igbo Role in National Politics

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka on Tuesday, 9th June 2026, held the 12th edition of the Chief Dr. Frederick Chigozie Ogbalu Memorial Lecture.

The lecture, titled, "The Place of the Igbo Race in Nigeria," was held at the ASUU-NAU Secretariat, UNIZIK, Awka.

In his opening remarks, Chairman of the occasion and President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, said the lecture series honours Chief Ogbalu’s commitment to the promotion of Igbo language and culture.

Senator Azuta-Mbata noted that the lecture is vital for shaping narratives about the Igbo people, stressing that despite claims of marginalization, Ndigbo possess the capacity to play a prominent role in Nigerian politics.

Declaring the event open, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, commended the Department of Igbo Language for instituting the lecture in honour of an icon who contributed immensely to promoting the cultural values of Ndigbo.

Prof. Anyaehie who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), assured of the University management’s continued support for the lecture series and the preservation of Igbo heritage.

In her remarks, Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, Prof. Nkoli Nnyigide, said the lecture series had been instrumental to her career as a scholar. She thanked all contributors to the programme’s success over the years and prayed for God’s continued blessings on Chief Ogbalu for his service to humanity and promotion of Igbo ideals.

Also speaking, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. George Onwudiwe, described the lecture as symbolic in recognizing a true son of Igbo land who contributed in numerous ways to projecting the Igbo race and its cultural heritage. Prof. Onwudiwe applauded the organizing committee for a job well done towards a successful lecture series.

Delivering the lecture, Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University, Owerri, Prof. Uchefula Chukwumaeze, enumerated the contributions of Ndigbo across all sectors to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

Prof. Chukwumaeze stated that the Igbo race has been marginalized in Nigerian politics despite having the capacity and dexterity to provide leadership and steer the country forward. The scholar urged Ndigbo not to give up on their aspirations to lead the nation, noting that the path to greatness comes with challenges.

The VC of Imo State University commended the organizers for providing a platform to showcase Igbo identity.

The event featured the presentation of awards, goodwill messages in support of the Ogbalu Lecture and various cultural performances.

Anambra Male, Female Teams Listed For 2026 Customs Volleyball Premier League

Anambra State has received an official invitation to feature both male and female teams in Phase One of the 2026 Comptroller-General of Customs National Volleyball Premier League, scheduled to hold from 13th to 26th June 2026 at the Indoor Sports Hall of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

This was contained in a memo from the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), signed by its Secretary General, Wasilat Aliyu-Abass, and addressed to the Chairman of the Anambra State Volleyball Association.

The letter, dated 5th June 2026 and titled _"RE: LETTER OF INVITATION FOR THE 2026 COMPTROLLER-GENERAL OF CUSTOMS NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUE FIRST PHASE FOR MALE AND FEMALE FROM 13TH TO 26TH JUNE, 2026 AT THE MKO ABIOLA NATIONAL STADIUM INDOOR SPORTS HALL, ABUJA – EXTENSION OF DATE,"_ clarified adjustments to the competition schedule.

Making reference to an earlier correspondence, NVBF/LMC/PREM/VOL.1/136 dated 29th May 2026, the Secretary General stated: “I wish to inform you that the above named championship, earlier scheduled from 13th to 26th June 2026, has been re-confirmed to run from 13th to 26th June 2026.”

GUO Pushes For Education, Enterprise Growth in Anam, Donates Pilot Classroom Blocks

Chairman of GUO Transport, Chief Godwin Ubaka Okeke, has donated five classroom blocks to Archbishop Onyemelukwe Grammar School, Oroma-Etiti, Anambra West Local Government Area. He also called on community stakeholders, the private sector, and well-meaning individuals to support the development of secondary education in Anam communities.

The donation was unveiled during the joint celebration of Chief Okeke’s 77th birthday and that of his wife, Lady Patricia Obiageli Okeke, who turned 72. The occasion was marked with a special thanksgiving mass at All Saints Anglican Church, Oroma-Etiti, Anam.

Speaking at the event, Chief Okeke described education as the bedrock of sustainable development, stressing that any society seeking growth must invest in education. He lamented that many schools in Anam still lack basic facilities such as classrooms, desks, laboratories, and toilets, forcing students to learn in overcrowded and unsafe conditions.

Chief Okeke urged successful indigenes and corporate organizations to adopt schools in the area through donations, renovations, and scholarship programmes, noting that investment in human capital must go beyond rhetoric to deliberate action.

The Adazi-Ani born philanthropist pledged ₦100 million for scholarships and educational development in Anam communities, to be disbursed at ₦20 million per year for the next five years. He also disclosed plans to establish an agrarian community store to preserve farm produce, boost revenue through agriculture, and reduce food wastage in the area.

Chief Okeke expressed appreciation to the Chief Executive Officer of Dozzy Oil, Chief Daniel Chukwudozie, for donating ₦50 million towards the church project. He further appealed to people of the area to prioritize education for future growth and development.

In his sermon, the Bishop of Niger East, Rt. Revd. Obiora Uzochukwu, described Chief Okeke’s gesture as “true service to God and humanity” worthy of emulation. He said the lives of Chief Okeke and his wife are a testimony of generosity, adding that GUO has consistently impacted lives.

The Bishop urged others to emulate the GUO model of philanthropy, stressing that alleviating the suffering of others is a practical way of spreading the gospel. He called on everyone, regardless of status, to contribute their quota in service to humanity.

Speaking on behalf of traditional rulers, the Igwe of Ivite-Anam Kingdom, HRH Igwe Sunday Ozoemena, commended Chief Okeke for his intervention. He said the philanthropic gesture would ease the burden on schools, improve learning conditions, and inspire other indigenes to invest in community development.

On his part, the son of the philanthropist, Dr. Chukwuemeka Okeke, assured that he and his siblings would uphold their parents’ legacy and sustain support for humanity.

The colourful event also featured a foundation-laying ceremony for a new All Saints Anglican Church building and the cutting of the ribbon to officially commission the newly constructed classroom blocks, performed by Chief Okeke.

Highlights of the celebration included the cutting of the birthday cakes by the celebrant and his wife, as well as the planting of a tree to encourage afforestation in the community.

ANSFA Chairman, Iloenyosi Hails Agha Mba’s Inclusive Approach, Pledges Synergy with Sports Ministry

The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, has commended the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Patrick Agha Mba, for his open-door policy and commitment to work with football stakeholders in the state.

Chief Iloenyosi gave the commendation on Friday, 5 June 2026, while responding during the “Thank You Luncheon” hosted by the Commissioner for sports stakeholders, aficionados, and leaders of sports associations at the Ministry’s conference hall in Awka.

The ANSFA boss described the meeting as historic, noting that it was the first time in a long while that a Commissioner for Sports in Anambra State would invite the FA Chairman for a meeting and a programme of this nature.

“We are grateful to Hon. Agha Mba for this gesture. This is the first time in a long while that a Sports Commissioner in Anambra is extending this kind of hand of fellowship to the FA. It shows he is ready to carry everyone along,” Iloenyosi said.

He thanked the Commissioner for promising to work in synergy with the State FA and assured that ANSFA would reciprocate by working closely with the Ministry to reposition sports, especially football, in Anambra.

“ANSFA is ready to work hand in hand with the Ministry. We share the same vision – to develop sports and take it from recreation to a real economic driver. We will give the Commissioner all the support he needs,” he added.

Chief Iloenyosi further pledged to pursue unity among all aggrieved parties within the football family in the state to ensure peace and faster growth of the game. He maintained that a united football front is critical to talent discovery and grassroots development.

“We will reach out to all aggrieved parties. Football cannot grow in an atmosphere of rancour. Our mandate is to unite everyone for the good of Anambra football,” the FA Chairman stated.

He promised that ANSFA, under his leadership, would continue to put Anambra on the national and global map through the “lovely game of football,” citing recent successes in hosting President Federation Cup matches and other national engagements in the state.

Chief Iloenyosi also lauded Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for providing the enabling environment that has made Anambra attractive for major football events, adding that stakeholders must leverage the current goodwill to build a sustainable football ecosystem in the state.

Agha Mba Hosts Anambra Sports Stakeholders, Commends Their Support for Sector Growth

The Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr Patrick Agha Mba, on Friday, 5 June 2026, hosted a “Thank You Luncheon” for sports stakeholders, aficionados, and leaders of sports associations in Anambra State.

The meeting, which brought together sports promoters, club owners, sports association chairmen and administrators, was held at the Ministry’s conference hall near Government House, Awka.

During the luncheon, Mba unveiled plans to reposition sports as a major component of Anambra State’s creative economy. He stressed the need to transform sports from a recreational activity into a sustainable culture and viable economic sector.

The Commissioner disclosed that the Ministry has developed a policy framework to establish Youth and Sports Departments in all Local Government Council Areas to strengthen grassroots sports development.

Mr Mba further revealed that plans are underway to encourage every LGA to host its own sports festival as a means of reviving sporting activities and discovering young talents.

He noted that the initiative would help create a vibrant sports ecosystem capable of generating opportunities for youths while contributing to the state’s economic growth.

According to him, the gathering was an opportunity to appreciate stakeholders whose support and faith in Anambra sports had sustained the Ministry’s efforts over the years.

He called for continued collaboration among stakeholders, urging them to support the Ministry, offer constructive criticism, and hold public officials accountable in the collective pursuit of sports excellence.

The Commissioner reaffirmed his commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders to position Anambra State and the South East as a leading hub for sports development, talent discovery, and economic opportunities through sports. He also commended them for their massive contributions to the growth of the sector in the state.

Mba added that the Ministry remains open to new ideas and partnerships that will take sports to greater heights in Anambra.

UNIZIK Pre-Degree Unit Holds 2026 Orientation for Students

The Pre-Degree Unit of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Friday, 5 June 2026, held its one-day orientation programme for students at the Pre-Degree Centre, Mbaukwu.

The orientation, themed, “Career Exploration and Goal Setting”, was aimed at preparing students for a successful stay in the programme.

Declaring the event open, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, represented by Governing Council member Prof. Pius Okoye, said the 2026 orientation was designed to ease students into the Pre-Degree programme. The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the Mbaukwu campus is being upgraded from a mini-campus to a full campus with the relocation of the JUPEB programme.

Prof. Anyaehie stressed the importance of time management, reminding the students that they are not yet full undergraduates of UNIZIK. He noted that admission into the University can only be achieved through success in their examinations.

In his welcome address, the Director of the Pre-Degree Unit, Engr. Prof. Paul Okolie, marked his one year in office by highlighting challenges and achievements at the centre. The Director cited poor lighting as a major challenge that hindered movement at night.

On achievements, Prof. Okolie listed the installation of 100 solar street lights, provision of solar lighting in classrooms to enable night reading, construction of a kitchen and conveniences for both staff and students, and water reticulation with shower facilities.

The scholar added that his administration also digitalized the application process, increased teachers’ honoraria, and improved wages for casual workers. Prof. Okolie further disclosed that following the Vice-Chancellor’s visit to the Igwe of Mbaukwu, the centre has been designated a study campus of the University.

The Pre-Degree Director confirmed that Mbaukwu will host the JUPEB programme from September. He urged students to read hard and shun examination malpractice, warning that paying anyone for admission into UNIZIK is illegal and punishable.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Pre-Degree Programme Board and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Alex Asigbo, represented by Prof. Nwachukwu Obiakor, charged the students to take their studies seriously while commending the Pre-Degree Unit staff for their work at Mbaukwu. Prof. Asigbo added that the University is on an upward trajectory.

Delivering the lecture on “Career Exploration and Goal Setting”, the Guest Lecturer and Director, Centre for Counselling and Career Development, Prof. Harry Obi Nwosu, urged students to distinguish themselves by focusing on the task ahead. He said the theme was apt because career success goes beyond passing examinations to understanding what it takes to excel in a chosen field.

“There is no small course in the University. Be the best at what you do, because excellence attracts honour and respect,” Prof. Nwosu said, while x-raying different career paths.

Other speakers included the Chief Safety Officer of the University, Mr. Obi Collins, who spoke on safety matters at the centre; Dr. Lucy Udedi, who represented the Director of the UNIZIK Medical Centre and explained the role of the University’s medical services; and the Traditional Ruler of Mbaukwu, represented by the heir to the throne, Prince Engr. Chukwuemeka Anugwu.

In a vote of thanks, Deputy Director of the Pre-Degree Unit, Dr. Vivian Anakwenze, thanked members of University Management for attending and charged the students to make the most of the opportunity by excelling during their short stay at the centre.

Highlights of the event includes medical screening organized for the students as well as presentation of cash rewards and medals to student-athletes who emerged victorious in football and volleyball matches.

UNIZIK Female Football Team Beats King and Queens FA 2-1 in FASU Games Build-Up

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Female Football Team defeated King and Queens Football Academy of Umudioka 2-1 in a friendly match played on Sunday, 31 May 2026, at the Coke Centre football pitch, UNIZIK.

The match is part of the team’s preparations for the 12th All Africa University Games, scheduled for 9th to 16th August, 2026 in Cairo, Egypt.

UNIZIK took the lead in the 15th minute through Chiamaka Favour Okafor before Chidimma Okoye doubled the advantage in the 38th minute. The visitors pulled one back in the second half, but the UNIZIK side held on for the win.

The victory follows an earlier 4-0 thrashing of Ojoto in another preparatory match as the team intensifies build-up to the continental event.

The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) has confirmed that the 12th All Africa University Games will be hosted by the Egyptian Universities Sports Federation in collaboration with leading Egyptian institutions.

The Games will bring together student-athletes and university stakeholders from across Africa for a week of competition and collaboration, with Nigeria listed among the invited nations.

UNIZIK To Hold Combined 20th, 21st Convocation Ceremony in November 2026

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, will hold its combined 20th and 21st Convocation Ceremony from Sunday, 15 to Friday, 20 November 2026.

The new date was announced by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie during the 244th Senate meeting of the University held on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, at the Zephaniah Madubuko Auditorium, Faculty of Social Sciences.

Prof. Anyaehie said the six-day event will begin with a thanksgiving service on 15 November and will cater to graduands of the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

The University's Numero Uno informed that activities will include the award of degrees, honorary degrees, Convocation lecture and the conferment of Emeritus Professorial titles.

The scholar explained that the November date aligns with the birthday of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the university’s namesake, while the earlier proposed date of 17–20 June 2026 did not receive approval from the University’s Governing Council.

The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed that the welfare of students and staff remains a top priority throughout his five-year administration.

UNIZIK Signs MoU with Chaudhary Devi Lal University, India to Boost Academic Collaboration

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chaudhary Devi Lal University (CDLU), Haryana, India, to expand cooperation in teaching, research, learning, and career development.

The virtual signing ceremony marked a step toward strengthening global academic exchange, research collaboration, and cultural ties between the two institutions.

Under the agreement, both universities will collaborate on joint academic events, student and staff exchange programmes, and the sharing of educational resources and research partnerships.

Speaking during the ceremony, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie said the partnership would leverage the university’s strengths in teaching and research to broaden academic opportunities for staff and students. Prof. Anyaehie expressed optimism that the collaboration with CDLU would advance academic growth and staff development.

CDLU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Vijay Kumar gave a brief overview of his
institution, noting it was named after Chaudhary Devi Lal, a former Deputy Prime Minister of India. He highlighted the coincidence that both universities bear the names of statesmen who served their countries with distinction. Prof. Kumar said the partnership with UNIZIK held strong potential and pledged CDLU’s commitment to its success for mutual benefit.

The ceremony was facilitated by Prof. Charles Nwadigwe, Director of International Collaboration and Linkages at UNIZIK, and Prof. Anu Shukla, Dean of International Relations and Foreign Affairs at CDLU.

Both vice-chancellors signed their copies of the MoU live during the event, while other officials present witnessed and applauded the proceedings.

Chaudhary Devi Lal University is a state-owned institution in Sirsa district, Haryana. Established by the Haryana government on April 2, 2003, it has 24 academic departments offering 21 career-oriented and specialized programmes.
