Autos / Re: 406 Or 407 Peugeot Car,.. Which Is More Reliable And Pocket Friendly by Ikenna351(m): 10:01am On Oct 04, 2020
datjohn:
Among the two Peugeot brands, I wud advice u to go with 406.
Manufacturer standpoint, 406 was a success throughout its production period and it made so much sales, reason attributed to its relative reliability, performance and less errors.
If u recall back in d days, 406 was a Nigerian government vehicle and there was no convoy u won't find it in. It really had its glory days and I got to develop my admiration there.

407 on the other hand was introduced to replace the 406 brand. But it was a woeful failure. Too many glitches, consumer complaints, and the personality was lost. Reasons why it didn't gain acceptance and besides, the competition was tough.

Users of 406 had always praised it for its outstanding AC, remarkable fuel economy, top notch security, engine reliability (esp. the EW10 engine. Its a monster on long journeys), car is surprisingly spacious despite its smallish look.
I also hear that the manual transmission is better to go for bcoz its the least problematic.

That's a wrong claim to make about Peugeot 407. You are basing your claims on "I heard, I read, they said, it appears, etc".

Peugeot 407 has his positives and negatives, likewise Peugeot 406 does. To condemn the 407 as a woeful failure showed you have no first hand experience yet you know so much about the car.

Peugeot 406 outshines Peugeot 407 in some areas, while 407 outshines 406 in some areas too. It depends on what you want from a car and how comfortable you are with the negatives the car comes with (includingthe do's and don'ts).

My Conversation With A Woman That Owns 1st Generation Ford Edge (21/09/2020)

Part 1 (Phone Call)

- Monk: Hello. So, someone is interested in buying a Ford Edge like yours. And since the brand is not my area of specialty, i decided to ask you since you are a user.
How is the Ownership Experience of your Edge has been so far?

- Woman: Honestly, I don't have anything to complain about the car.

- Monk: You mean no headache ascribed to the ownership of your Edge so far?

- Woman: Not at all. Of course, I have done some repairs on the car ever since I own it. But nothing major to complain of.

- Monk: You mean normal wear & tear?

- Woman: Yes.

- Monk: What About the Engine & Transmission? Has any shown sign of strange or peculiar issue?

- Woman: No. Both mine have never shown any anomaly I can think of. In fact, the A/C is powerful in chilling and never gave A/C problem (about 3 or more years of her ownership of the Edge).

- Monk: I think these are basically the things i wanted to ask you about the car.

- Woman: Ok. No problem.
However, the maintenance cost is higher compared to Toyota vehicles like RAV4 and others.

- Monk: You mean the cost of maintaining the Edge is higher than similar vehicles of Japanese brands?

- Woman: Exactly.
You remember i used to own Toyota RAV4 before i upgraded to the Edge.

- Monk: Yes, I remember.
Any other thing you would like me to tell the person concerning the Edge from your first hand experience in Nigeria?

- Woman: Well, I am a happy owner of the Ford Edge and never had course to regret the ownership. But I would suggest anyone interested in getting one should go for one in good condition to really enjoy the vehicle like I am enjoying mine.

- Monk: Ok. Thank you.

Part 2 (One-on-One)

Later in the day (towards evening), i met with her to continue the conversation:

- Monk: So, I saw your vehicle at Car Park and decided to come in and ask more questions.
What is the fuel consumption of your Ford Edge like?

- Woman: It's higher than my former vehicle (RAV4). Wouldn't know if it's because of the size though. But I gathered Vehicles in these sizes (CUV & SUV) usually consume higher.

- Monk: Yes, the size may contribute to the higher fuel consumption. It also can depend on Engine sizes or Engine powers, since your former vehicle had 4-cylinder engine. It's your Edge a V6?

- Woman: I wouldn't know if it's V6 or 4-cylinder.

- Monk: Likely a V6, because I saw All Wheel Drive badge on the vehicle.

- Woman: Where is the badge located on the vehicle?

- Monk: At the rear. I saw AWD badge today when I took close attention to your Edge for the first time. The AWD stands for the "All Wheel Drive".

- Woman: Ok. So what does it mean?

- Monk: It means each of the wheels on your Edge propels the vehicle (depending on the system design), unlike your RAV4 that had probably only 2 Wheels propelling the vehicle. The AWD usually consume more fuel than 2 wheel drive vehicles of same model and engines.

- Woman: I now understand what the badge means.
Notwithstanding, the difference in the fuel consumption with the RAV4 is not that big of a deal. It's really not much to complain of.

- Monk: Ok.
So, you said the maintenance cost is higher. How high? Can you give an example?

- Woman: Let's assume a part in my former RAV4 cost 50k. Same part in my Edge would cost about 60-65k.

- Monk: Ok.
What about the repairs you have done so far on the vehicle you talked about earlier. Can you point out the ones you consider major?

- Woman: Well, I have done suspension (shock absorber) repairs. Also, there was a time my steering (probably she meant rack) had issue. My former mechanic couldn't fix it well. I changed mechanic and started using a Ford mechanic that does only Ford Car repairs and he fixed the steering issue for good. I can't think of any other repairs or replacements worth mentioning.

- Monk: From all you have said, its not a bad car then.

- Woman: Yes, I am really happy to own the Edge.

NO PROS YOU SAY... WHAT'S THAT ABOVE? Also, where did I say anything about japanese cars? For that matter, where did I say ALL Fords?

Yes, you didn't state any positive concerning the first generation Edge (even in your posts above you quoted as an evidence). And I mentioned Japanese vehicles because that's where it's usually lead to from people claiming other cars in other brands are not reliable.

If you are to define reliability to me, are you saying Japanese vehicles with automatic transmission issues don't visit your workshop? All these threads & posts littered in Car Talk concerning Automatic transmission issues, what percentage of them are Ford Edge and what percentage are Japanese vehicles? Who is buying of those Japanese Automatic gearboxes and Engines they are shipping in in hundreds and thousands weekly/monthly? If there is no demand for them, why would the sellers invest in such businesses, when there are other brands? If they are not failing or giving the owners issues, why are they replacing them? Why single out Edge as only vehicle with automatic gearbox or Engine issues when reality in Nigeria (Abuja to be specific) proves otherwise?

First generation Ford Edge had 3 different petrol engines? If one of the engines is prone to issues, are you saying the rest of the two are as well?

First generation Ford Edge production lasted for about 8 years. Are you saying there was no improvement and changes between or from the 2007 - 2014 productions? If yes, isn't it the Ford specialist to point out those improvement rather than condemn all first generation Ford Edge? Isn't it obvious you simply don't like the vehicle and basing your professional advice on personal preference rather than objectivity?

80% of the time, issues used vehicle owners go through or experience are usually non related or different from initial complaints first users lamented, like the one you screenshot and attached. A Ford specialist would have no business with online car reviews, for he would experience things differently while on the practical.

As for the build quality of the first generation Edge, I can't tell if it was advertised and sold as a premium vehicle. Was it?

There were so many negative online reviews or things said about all Peugeot Vehicles I currently own or have owned, yet I have never experienced any of them, even as they age daily. Do you think I would based my knowledge and professional/expert recommendations to other people on Peugeot cars to buy or not to buy based on those online reviews or knowledge gathered from my own personal experiences and experiences gathered diagnosing, repairing or working on other people Peugeot vehicles?

I mean, I know two women that own this first generation Ford Edge here in Abuja and they don't look miserable to me. If this generation of Ford Edge is as bad as you claimed, the misery will tell on them. Because of this, I will talk to one of them about her ownership experience so far on the vehicle and post her response here, no matter how positive or negative they are.

I will also look for some online positive reviews from users of this particular Edge generation, screenshot and attach them here as well. Focusing, posting and pointing out only the negatives means you really not an expert on the brand. Leave it for one who is to do his thing.

People were complaining in the past that they have no access to Ford technicians or specialists. Now someone is providing that solution, but you don't seem to like it. Ford is his passion, he said, what's wrong with that? If your own career is your passion as well, who gets to decide whose passion is bad or inferior?

This thread is about stepping out of the norm (popular car brands in Nigeria). I like and encourage people like that in their venture. Not every man has "follow-follow" mentality. Again, I for one is a living example. If you are not ok that Ford is his passion and happiness, what would you say about Me and Peugeot?

Dude. Take a chill pill. You fix Ford. Fine. Every brands has its pros and cons. Like I pointed out above, the Ford edge is popular for a reason. My point is don't tell people it's all roses when it is not. If you truly care about people, you will tell them both the good AND the bad so they will know what they are getting into. And this applies to ALL brands not just Ford.

Relax. Life is too short to die from HBP over a single sentence. I wish you well. undecided

You do realise you contradicted yourself. If you knew all Brands/cars have their pros and cons (positives and negatives), how come you didn't point out the positives of the Edge he indicated interest in? Instead you condemned the car completely with the long "No". An expert on the Ford brand will point out the positives and negatives concerning the Edge model the person is interested in and let the perosn decides if he/she is comfortable with the negatives and excited with the positives or simply walk away from the car for something else. You didn't give him that chance to make his choice and decision from options he is to be made aware of.

The thing with Japanese fans is they see nothing wrong with their brands yet always eager to jump in and condemn other brands. You claimed there were a lot of recalls on the car, what about the thousands or millions of Japanese brands/cars they recall yearly. You forgot to mention that as well? So if it's safe for people to buy the frequent recalled Japanese cars, why is it a problem to buy recalled Ford vehicles? Why singling out Ford only as if the Asian brands are saint in this matter you raised?

This idea of reliability when it comes to cars is stuppid to me, because its subjective. Hundreds, if not thousands, of foreign used (tokunbo) Japanese engines and automatic gearboxes are brought into Apo markets here in Abuja weekly. Yet, they are sold off within a week or so and another hundred or thousand batch are brought in the coming or subsequent weeks. Who are buying off these Japanese engines and automatic gearboxes from the sellers? Do people purchased and replaced a perfectly working engines and automatic gearboxes with used ones if they didn't fail? Yet these people would tell you there cars are so reliable even though they probably have replaced the engines, auto gearboxes or both twice, including everyone around them.

I know some Toyota Camry users that carry spare engine oil in their booths daily for top up. They top up their engine oils weekly more than they top up fuel tank, yet they only see problems with other brands and not theirs staring them back on their faces up and close.

If you are all for Japanese cars, there is nothing wrong with that. But understand that no matter how good you think they are, some people will prefer something different. Not every man wants to live by other people choice. I for one is a living example.

thats a lie

thats a generic assumption

your own information you are not talking to driver but a mechanic

You need to understand that most people you find in Car Talk section forming "Experts" only know what wrench or screwdriver looks like from Google images, let alone physically touched or used one. So always have that understanding when visit here and decide to debate them.

Practically, flashing/blinking check engine light doesn't mean it must be engine misfire issue, as far as Peugeot Injection systems are concerned.

I have diagnosed and repaired Nigerian used Peugeot vehicles with severe abused engine wiring harnesses that had their check engine lights blinking constantly, which had nothing to do with engine misfire.

I have diagnosed and fixed Peugeot vehicles with blinking CELs that had nothing to do with engine misfire, but sometimes an indication of some stored faults in Injection ECUs needing attention or even when something is wrong the ECU itself.

Yes, a misfire on one or more cylinders usually blink the check engine lights (one of the symptoms), but doesn't mean every CEL blinking symptom is caused by engine misfire on Peugeot Injection/ignition systems.

People who rely or based their knowledge on online opinions when it comes to Solutions to car issues are disconnected from practical solutions and reality. Information passed online on cars are mostly generalisation using one or two opinions as a standard, while the rest are just repetition of what others said.
