Car Talk / My 1st Experience With Citroën C4 PICASSO (review) by Ikenna351(m): 1:24am On Oct 23, 2020
MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH CITROËN C4 PICASSO (REVIEW)

It took me awhile to articulate my thoughts and put this experience in writing (perhaps, texts). Even the pictures were not enough to remember every details. The POV video didn't help either. But after about 2 days, it started flowing.

The Red Citroën C4 PICASSO was there staring back at me, flesh and blood. It took awhile while we were both staring at each other before I took out my camera and started clicking.

THE BODY:

Obviously, it's a Van, a mini one. But PSA designs can be difficult to understand sometimes, just like the early Peugeot 3008. The body design is dated a little, considering this one is 2008 production. But you could tell, even from a distance, that this is CITROËN. The signature is written all over. The car is based or shares platform with Peugeot 307 & 3008 (1st gen), i think or it appears.

THE INTERIOR:

This is a car you spend some minutes figuring out how to drive the car, irrespective of millions of kilometers you have spent covering behind wheels since your birth. I mean, I spent about 3 minutes trying to learn how to drive the car. Not like drive the car, but drive the car with other things that comes with driving a car.

The Steering Wheel assembly has Remote, Switches & some controls that can control almost all the gadgets in the interior, including exterior & engine bay. Yet, none of them rotates with the steering wheel as it steers. Like when you are doing some donuts, you are not searching or waiting for the wheel to return, for the switches are where they are waiting for you to operate at any moment. It takes minutes to reorganize one's brain to actually drive this car, if you were meeting him for the first time. Really something to admire. Weldon Citroën!

The Electronic Instrument Panel is in the middle of dashboard (which is not news anyway). The panel is merged with Multifunction Display on this one. Probably the mono or bi- model (couldn't tell the difference). Some might argue that it could make one take eyes off the road while driving and checking the panel. But I don't keep my eyes glued on instrument panel while driving. Do you?

I mean, you would probably need to read the handbook or owner's manual to figure out how to control some functions in the car. Even the ventilation system control panels took me awhile to understand they were for that system. For those complaining 307 is too electrical, you haven't met this car.

Speaking of Electricals, I didn't ask how long the car has stayed in Nigeria, but the Electricals still work, usually an indication for PSA vehicles that have not stayed long in Nigeria. I mean there are some modern lions that I have come across and the only interior electricals that work are the ignition switch and the half dead BSI unit. At least, they need those 2 to function to be able to start and drive. How they drive is a topic for different article (maybe 2). So either this C4 owner really takes care of his/her car or the car hasn't been properly welcomed to Nigeria. However, the radiator engine cooling system fan has been bypassed or abused to spin constantly with ignition on. So, I suppose what is remaining is "properly" to complete the welcome. Hope the Electricals don't go beyond the current conditions I met him days ago. Anyway, I didn't check, but would assume the electricals would be similar to Peugeot 307 T6.

I tried to adjust the seat (driver's) but realized it could turn into a journey that would take awhile to arrive. So I let it go. But, I wasn't uncomfortable, even though the last person that drove the car adjusted it too close to the steering wheel ( I am not saying I was relaxed anyway). It's a 5-seater MPV, but I didn't actually test the rear seats comfortability. It's MPV. They should be.

There are 2 rearview Mirrors inside the car, specifically mounted only for the driver to use (big & Small). The small one can only view the rear seat occupants (parent to keep eyes on children). The bigger one can only view through the rear glass/view outside rear of the car. They positioned the mirrors such that one cannot do the work of the other. Never came across such design/feature before. Note that I am referring to the conventional external rearview Mirrors on left & right sides of every car.

SUSPENSION:

I peeped under and I didn't the conventional Hydraulic Suspensions Citroëns are known for. They look similar to that of Peugeot 307 & fist gen Peugeot 3008. They could be identical. At least, you have something to work with in your research, if you are now considering adding the car to your fleet in Nigeria.

DRIVING/PERFORMANCE:

Where i truly appreciate this car are the 2 key components of the Powertrain (Engine & Transmission). I was excited when I flipped the bonnet open and met 2.0i EW10A under. I prefer that engine to the THP150 - THP163 engines, even when I know the latter are more powerful (not by much though). I am not saying it's one of the best PSA Engines. I am saying it's far ahead of EW10J4. Of course, it's not a performance engine or was never designed to be. But when mated to right gearbox, it's goddamn fun! This car reminded me of it.

The car has 6-speed Piloted Manual Transmission (Electronic). It's actually a manual gearbox, but electronically controlled. So it offers toughness of manual gearbox and also the complexity/fragility nature of automatic transmission, all in one transmission/system. It means you get to rough use the gearbox with low maintenance cost and worry not, but has to handle to delicate electrical control of the gearbox. For if it the Electrical part fails, the gearbox becomes inoperable, no matter how new or good the Gearbox is. The clutch & gear select Electronic Actuator is usually the major weakness of this transmission (sometimes the Transmission ECU if electrically abused). So, you must not abuse the Electrical systems to enjoy that transmission.

I have driven a number of Peugeot cars with this engine mated to 5-speed manual gearbox and liked the experience. But this 6-speed manual experience made me love it. One of the tyres on the car wasn't as good as the other three, so I chose to drive the car for economy. Still, even with slight press on the accelerator, the car hit 100km/h effortlessly and quicker (thanks to the 6-speed short gear ratios). This gearbox made AL4 looked like 2-speed gearbox. If not for the wind noise, you wouldn't hear both the engine and gearbox as the speed figures increases, as gear changes (of course there is delay as gear changes since it's manual gearbox). It made me wonder why Peugeot decided not to mount this actual 6-speed manual gearbox (without the Electronic control) on manual version of Peugeot 407 with this engine, instead of the 5-speed, since this gearbox perfected the Engine efficiency in power & fuel consumption compared to the 5-speed? Someone was still not sober, I guess. Or maybe Peugeot 407 Manual version with 2.2i EW12J4 needed to sell, I supposed.

The car wasn't designed for performance (I mean the maximum top speed is 195 km/h). So, I wouldn't advise anyone to buy the car for that purpose. But men! You can have good time during the ownership on roads. With the little 143 hp & 200 N-m, the car pulls with ease, even with the about 1,600 kg load on the engine and gearbox. There is a flap buttons behind the steering wheel to manually override the automatic mode and select the gears yourself manually, if you need more action. But I didn't bother with it. I tried it few on occasions on Peugeot 508 and felt like I was playing video games on real roads and never bothered using that feature. If it's not Manual, it's not Manual.

This particular one I drove is Bi-fuel (CNG & Petrol, I guess). I honestly didn't know which of the fuel the engine was running on while I was driving and didn't care. It's probably stock or aftermarket. It works for the owner, that's what matters.

CONCLUSION:

I know the above might sound weird to Europeans & Australians reading this because you guys drive Citroëns a lot. It's still a thing over here in Nigeria. It's a car I would recommend to a family man or woman with young children. The fuel economy is good (about 6.0 L/100 km on highway), if fuel economy is a must to you (not for me). Most parts are easily accessible here, I believe (as long as you are not the type that struggle for gap with every car you come across in cities, or traffics, considering body parts accessibility in Nigeria).

All it will take to have a long blissful Motoring Ownership Experience with this Citroën C4 PICASSO in Nigeria is "Don't Abuse Him".

Peugeot VIN data from British Columbia, Part 3:

505

Unlike the older models of Peugeot in the VIN data that I got, the 505 was introduced to the BC market after the computerized vehicle regthre was online so I can say that these are all of the 505s that were ever sold here. A few could have been private imports, but not many at all, under 5, if that.

Peugeot Canada Ltd. handed over sales to Chrysler Canada between 1983 and 1987, so the relatively few sales reflects the disinterest of that dealer network in selling Peugeots.

Some days ago, I was busy under the bonnet doing some maintenance repairs in this my Lion and a man walked towards me and started saying to me how sweet and fun driving Peugeot 406 can be and ended it saying they are killed by high cost of maintenance because of their unreliability and their parts keep breaking down all the time . I raised my face, opened my mouth to speak but no sound came out. I held it open for some seconds, shut it and faced back what I was doing under the bonnet. He went on again with his blabbing on the "unreliability and high cost of maintaining a 406" while I kept my face down under the bonnet without uttering a word. It was obvious he wanted me to argue with him, defend, disagree or agree with his claims. He suddenly shut it and walked away when he became uncomfortable at my silence, I supposed.

I finished what I was doing, cranked and the Lion came alive, roaring (I love the throaty loud exhaust note on mine). Took the car for a spirited drive and minutes into it, my 32 were all out. Got back home, wanted to switch off engine and changed my mind. Left the engine running, opened the door, stood by the door with my right foot on Accelerator pedal. Pressed the pedal down till rpm hit close to 7,000 and left it there, while I watched the tail of the car. No smoke of any color was seen from the car tail, as the 20 years old Engine continue to sing in it's melodious high tone.

The over 200,000 km 20 years old car with:

SHORT STORY OF THE PEUGEOT 504 Pickup GROUP B

A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN AFRICA
The Peugeot 504 had a really successful career on the African rally tracks during the 70s. Safari Rally, Morocco Rally, Bandama (Ivory Coast) and local championships, the saloon version of the Peugeot was dominating the Africain rallies. Homologated in July 1975, le Coupe V6 version proudly carried the legacy on ! Following all of its successes, the car earned the nickname of « Queen of Africa ».
At the beginning of the 80s, it was time to replace the 504 Coupe V6, and for a new protagonist to enter the story, named Peter Hughes. He was a local former rally driver, who had been pretty successful on the Rally Safari with several Ford cars. At the time, he was the owner of Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA), a newly created company transforming 504 saloon cars into pickup trucks for the local market. He was then approached by Marshalls of Nairobi, the Peugeot distribution network in Kenya. They were aware of the good publicity that could represent a racing Peugeot on the African rally tracks, and this is how the former pilot got in charge of the homologation of the Peugeot 504 Group B pickup.
The new Group A category seemed to be the perfect playground for the Peugeot pickup, allowing high production tourism cars to race against each other with reduced costs. Moreover, while waiting for the manufacturers to finish the development of their new bespoke rally cars, FISA eased the homologation conditions. Any car homologated to race in Group 4, which was the case for the 504, could be transferred in Group A with a simple application, allowing private teams to create a field of cars while waiting for the manufacturers.

AN ACCIDENTAL HOMOLOGATION IN GROUP B
Unfortunately for the team, one detail of the regulation had been neglected, the minimum volume of the driving cabin. Because of its particular design for a rally car, the pickup did not fulfill this requirement and, as stipulated by the FISA, was automatically transferred into the new Group B regulation. The car was then approved for the Group B on December 1, 1982 and the 20 cars required for the homologation (which most of them never raced) have been built shortly after.
Unlike the 504 Coupe, the homologated pickup version was not fitted with the powerful but highly-fuel consuming and expensive V6, but with the 4-cylinder 1971 cm3 engine. Pilots have been reporting that race marshals were so much used to see the Coupe V6 racing for the past years, that many of them accidently wrote « Peugeot 504 Pickup » on the entry and result lists during the 1983 season. It is also important to note that the Group B-homologated version was RWD, having proved to be very performant and reliable on African endurance with the old versions of the 504.
The 504 Pickup started racing in 1983 during Kenyan Rally Championship. Luckily, the local championship was overlapping with the World Rally Championship during the Marlboro Safari Rally, and the 504 pickup would be able to compete against some other Group B cars.

Most manufacturers had still not launched their Group B cars, and the competing cars at the time were also former Group 4 cars transferred into the new regulation. The starting line-up was still very impressive, with an Opel Ascona driven by Ari Vatanen and two audi Quattro A1, including one driven by Michèle Mouton. The Peugeot pickups were competing also into the B11 category, respectively cars with engine displacement between 1.6 and 2 litres.

A SHORT CAREER IN GROUP B
Two Peugeot 504 pickups took part into the race, and then officially became the first Peugeot cars to race into the Group B category. Johnny Bellier and Basil Criticos, two local experimented rally drivers, are at the wheel. However, the cars had really low chances of finishing the race at a good position, facing opposition with much bigger engines.

The first one finished the race in eighth position, more than seven hours later than the leading quatuor, lost into a field of smaller private cars. Criticos retired from the race due to a broken gearbox. Another pilot, called Vic Preston Jr, drove the Peugeot for the rest of the national season, driving it once to the victory.

An evolution of the pickup has been homologated for the 1984 season, the biggest update being the fitting of new Weber carburetors instead of the old Solex ones. Thanks to other small evolutions, the engine was then delivering 170 hp.

The 504 pickup started becoming (a bit) successful. The French truck has still been taking part into the Kenyan Rally Championship with Johnny Rellier, and a second car is driven by another experimented local driver named David Horsey. Rellier managed to finish the 1984 Marlboro Safari Rally in 15th position, still seven hours away from the official cars, but Horsey unfortunately had to retire after a crash.

Although Johnny Rellier was only racing in Kenya, David Horsey decided to take its Peugeot out of the borders of the country. He notably entered the pickup into the Bandama Ivory Coast Rally, also overlapping with the World Rally Championship. As part of a field including only 12 competitors, he finished the race in 5th position. Thanks to this incredible result and to victories in Zimbabwe and Rwanda, he also won the 1984 African Rally Championship and, at the same time, written down the name of the atypical Peugeot 504 pickup into the rally rankings forever.

The racing career of the African version of the Lion pickup seems to have ended at the end of this race. Other Peugeot 504 pickups competed into the Dakar Rally race during the 80s, but these have no link with the cars which competed in the Group B championship. They were being built by Dangel, a French custom workshop.

Today, a few rebuilds can be found racing into some historical events in Africa and a wonderful replica has been displayed at Goodwood in 2018, making every exotic-car lover happy.

Another Peugeot 504 pickup Group B also took part into the 1984 Finnish 1000 Lakes Rally, without any visible link with the cars racing in Africa.

“I Will Never Dispose Of It”, Says Man Who Uses Peugeot 505 For 30 Years

Without any delay, Alhaji Ibrahim, who was then the sales manager of Arewa Textiles in Kaduna, quickly sold his car, got a loan and bought the car of his dream from Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) Limited. Since then (that is 30 years now), he has been cruising the vehicle without contemplating to let it go.

“It cost me a little over N15,000 to acquire,” he said, admiring the blue-colour Peugeot saloon car parked outside his home. Outwardly, save for a broken wing mirror, nothing about the car showed that it has been on the road for three decades.

And for the engine, its owner could confidently boast: “Now if I fill my tank, I can go to Lagos.”

After Alhaji Ibrahim bought his car in 1982, two of his friends admired and bought one each for themselves. While he could not recall how one of them disposed of his car, the grey-haired retiree remembered everything about the other. “He purchased it about four months after mine and sold it to a businessman in Kantin Kwari market. The carcass of the car is just there at the mechanic’s garage. Every day I go there to service my own car, I see it,” he explained.

Death of contemporaries of his car did not just stop at his close friends, Alhaji Ibrahim recollected, saying every other Peugeot 505 he knew to be as old as his own, was longer “on the road.”

Three decades old and yet the vehicle is breaking more records. In the same year it was bought 30 years ago, a baby was born into the family of Alhaji Ibrahim. That child, who is now as old as the car, is the one using it to attend lectures at the university.

The father of 18 told Sunday Trust that the secret behind the seeming unparalleled longevity of his Peugeot automobile is regular maintenance.

“I remember going to Tiga (dam) to buy fish in the Volvo I bought from Briscoe. On my way back, the car overheated. It was on a Sunday evening. So I had to leave it there. The following morning I went to Briscoe. It was the first incident I had, that time I didn’t have Peugeot. So I took my maintenance file to the workshop manager in Briscoe and told him what happened. After checking my maintenance schedule, he sent a towing vehicle and they towed and repaired the car free of charge,” he narrated.

Apart from the 30-year-old car, Alhaji Ibrahim disclosed that he had also used a Peugeot 504 for close to 24 years before disposing it. Yet he still drives a Mercedes Benz car he bought in 1987.

According to him, his way with keeping cars in good shape does not stop at the ones in his personal fleet. “When I was working for the Katsina State government as a commissioner in the electoral commission, I was assigned a 504 as official car for four years. By the time I returned it, people were saying this car is not more than four or five months. I believe in maintenance and whichever car I have, I maintain it excellently, because I know how difficult it is to get it.”

Only about five years ago, he encountered, for the first time, what he described as ‘fault’ from his Peugeot 505, which he attributed to human error. “I asked my son to gauge the water in the radiator and he did without closing the radiator cover tightly. So I travelled to Katsina with the car, with air condition on. On my way back, I noticed a change in its sound, so I switched off the AC and parked. I discovered that the radiator cover had fallen and the water had drained out. I phoned my mechanic and the following morning we went back with a top cylinder gasket and fixed it. And before 12pm, we were back in Kano,” he related.

Alhaji Ibrahim has vowed not to sell his old car no matter the price. The old man recalled that his children been inundating him with complaints about the vehicle being an old one and needs to be changed, saying he often counter them with the answer: “that is your problem.”

“My own problem is not a car or a house. My own problem is for you to get educated,” he would tell the children in defence of his car. Not satisfied, one of the children attempted to sell it without his consent, on the grounds that its proceeds could be used to buy another car, explained. “They went and priced it N350,000 and my mechanic phoned me, saying ‘Alhaji instead of taking that N350,000, why not keep that car, it would serve you more than the amount’.”

“If I had the N350,000, it would not buy me another car. And even if it buys me another one, the durability will not be there. So I asked my children, ‘why do you bother yourselves when this car is still working? If you want, save and buy the car of your choice.”

Just as he is not comfortable with the idea of disposing the car, Alhaji Ibrahim is not keen to owning modern ones. “There are many flashy cars around; coupled with the fact that everything has been computerized. But if it comes to durability and maintenance, you cannot compare them to the ones of those years. If you take wrong or adulterated fuel, for instance, you will find your vehicle stopping on the road. That is very common with most of these sophisticated cars. But this car, anything you put to it, it will still go. And with the attitude of our drivers, you can be sure if somebody hits you, it is his vehicle that will suffer.”

“The innovation is ok. But honestly speaking, we need these types of cars on Nigerian roads now. More so, any village you stop, you will get the spare parts. But for some of these (modern) cars, there are some mechanics who don’t even know what to do to them when they get problem. As for this one, any mechanic anywhere in Nigeria can repair it for you,” he argued.

I am still waiting for the answer whether Nigeria is hotter than the middle east where they use the said oils.

It makes it easier once you understand you can't save every man in some situations.

The best you can do is advise your loved ones, people you care about or someone that really cares for his/her wellbeing to avoid buying Nigerian used vehicles, if he/she can afford to financially.

Part 2 – The Peugeot 504

The Revving Sound of this engine was the most unique with an impressive long stretch of a tenor sound. 1Km away, you would know, Simba Ako gear one, two etc.

Only two brands have used the logo of lion well. The cold Pilsner (imara Kama Simba) and the Mighty French Machine, imagine if you had both….

The 1800CC car would produce a horsepower of 140. And the same engine would be put in a pick-up, 504, and drag a long 20 passengers, 14 seated side by side, three bending in the middle path of the pick-up, and three hang out there, and all this passengers with at least a sack of maize, beans or vegetable on the carrier.

Imagine when that engine is in a saloon only. Wuee!!!

The French men thought it wise to bring in 2000cc, and 2400cc.

The 2000cc, produced a horsepower of 160. Do you know what that means?

Well, the shocks and the comfort of the seats, marched the African market perfectly.

The ground clearance which is 6.6 inches, still stands very tall. You can cruise off road without stress.

Many desert roads were friendly to the Field Marshal.

Many are not aware that the Frenchman brought in the Disel version. Especially the 2000cc and the 2400cc.

The body is purely metallic. You have heard stories of people who tried to commit suicide with the car and still got back home Alive to retell the tale.

It’s the kind of car to take to a welding shop to have it fixed with raw fire

Being the Epic of Power, Pride, And Speed, Simba 5 never lacked in the presidential Escort.

At the reserved parking lot of the heads of parastatals, The Senior Judges and Magistrates, Prominent Business People and Provincial Directors Of Education (PDEs), Simba stood tall.

Needless to Say, the sound of that Engine Twerked Uncountable Ovaries.

As Frank Akwabi Said the other day, if your father had this, start looking for your step brothers and sisters.

RESPECT SIMBA.

Part 1: The Peugeot 504*

Have You Heard The Wonders Of Peugeot 504 Saloon?

The Best TBT to take with you through the weekend. The car below is called Peugeot 504 Saloon. It is an SR Version. We also have GL.

This car is known, for amazing speed, metal body, and stability. In fact, I will still remind you, you cannot compare this old school with the Toyota 110, E91, Carib etc. This machine from France has her equals.

The GL and The SR engines use either point or Magneto technologies.

The Magneto version came as a fuel saver. It is totally economical despite being a caburator vehicle.

HOW ABOUT THE SPARES?

They are very available. In every town, There is always that shop(s) known for these cars. And always that Mechanic known for this vehicle. If you need one, nione kando.

You don’t need to keep replacing the parts. You can run for a along time. Look at the shock absorbers, hardly will you replace them, you only replace the fluid , and buy the kits, and run for another three years. THREEE SOLID YEARS.

How do you identify a Magneto engine?

Check at the distributor, it has a cable attached to it, running to the left part of the bonnet into a silver metal plate with two modules. I will take photos of the same and attach them to this post later. Someone remind me.

With the Magneto system, be sure, 15km per liter will run. Don’t forget, it is an 1800 cc, look at that.

By the way, did you know that you can use this saloon engine in the 504 Pickup? Yes, they share the engine. Now you understand why this car glides on the road like shit.

CAUTION!!!

When driving this car, avoid moving close to the babies (demios, premios etc) of these days, because, if you happen to scratch them hata kidogo, they will look like they have been run over by Easy Coach.

IF YOU ARE THE REAL OG WHO VALUES OLD SCHOOL, Don’t think twice about this car.

RESPECT SIMBA 5
