the biggest tournament in football is not UCL, its the World Cup and will always be the world cup for a long time. UCL performances dont automatically mean a player is better than another player. UCL performer this year may disappear by next year, so many players have starred in UCL, yet have not won it, it doesn't mean such a player is bad. Godin, Oblak, Pjanic, Dybala, Mandzukic, Pirlo, Ibrahimovic, Neymar(excluding that one season), Salah and co, and tons of others. Winning UCL doesn't guarantee that a player is top notch or not. Hazard is a top top player, a guaranteed starter in any team, a proven match winner, a player that other players can look up to, and extremely talented, having paltry number of UCL goals doesn't mean he is bad.

Personally, the most important player in Barca's midfield for the past 11 years is Busquets, Busi helped Xavi, Iniesta and the whole team both Barca and Spain to thrive, yet you almost won't notice him. Xavi left, Busi and Messi thrived, Iniesta left Busi and Messi thrived. Only Rakitic has been able to replicate Busi's contribution to our build up in the past 10 years. Busi was very important

De Ligt is right footed so Vermaleen doesn't even come to the picture at all. Whereas he's very good, a special player, he shouldn't be signed just yet because he will have to fight for space with Gerard Pique who can still guarantee at least 2 years at the top level and i know De Ligt can't wait for 2 years. So its either he signs now and understudy Gerard for the foreseeable future(which i don't see happening) or we don't sign him at all, we already have the highest wage bill in Europe, 70% of our turnover last season went to wages and we've overspent on De Jong already too, coupled with the fact that there are more pressing needs and positions that needs urgent replacement.

So De Ligt will be a very good signing and can go on to be one of the best defenders in recent times but we can't have it all.If a 19yr old defender is signed for 60M with the precarious situation we are in right now then the end lopin cinema.
