AKURE — BARING any last minute change, no fewer than 10 Commissioners and Special Advisers in the Ondo State Executive Council will dump the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP; Labour Party LP; Social Democratic Party, SDP. Vanguard reliably gathered that the commissioners, as a prelude, will contest the party’s ticket for the National Assembly seat next year and if deprived will take the plunge.

In a dramatic u-turn four Personal Aides to the Senate Minority Leader and Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District have tendered their resignation letters.
Their position was disclosed during a meeting of Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District in Abak.

Led by Barr. Utibe Nwoko, Senior Legislative Aide, they dissociated themselves from any planned defection of the Senator to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and pledged their unalloyed support to the reelection of Governor Udom Emmanuel in 2019.

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has said that three more governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and some ministers in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet are in secret talks with his party over possible defection.

Secondus also gave leeway to the recent heavy-weight returnees who wished to contest various offices on the PDP platform to do so, saying, “the returnees have equal rights as the existing members.”

The party ostensibly gave room for Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State, former governor of Kano State, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Senate President, Bukola Saraki to contest for its presidential ticket ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Speaking at the 81st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP yesterday in Abuja, the PDP National Chairman, said: “Three more governors and some ministers are coming to our fold, they (APC government) are not aware. Security and economy have collapsed, they are ‎not aware. There are killings in different parts of the country, they are not aware. Until we reclaim power in 2019, they won’t be aware of anything.”

Secondus also warned against any plot to impeach Saraki.

All other presidential aspirants on the platform of the party were present at the NEC except former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

Boko Haram fighters killed 11 troops and seized weapons in a raid on a military post in the latest such attack in northeast Nigeria, residents and a military source said on Sunday.
Gunmen in five trucks and on motorcycles stormed the checkpoint in Bunari village near the garrison town of Monguno in Borno state late Friday, leading to a fierce battle.

"They came around 6:30 pm (1930 GMT) and attacked the military checkpoint and soldiers responded with fire," resident Amadu Sheriff told AFP.

"The attackers overpowered the soldiers who took up positions in the trenches dug round the checkpoint from where they fought the Boko Haram gunmen," he said.

Three civilians, including a woman and her child, from a nearby settlement, were killed by stray bullets, he said.

He said residents of the nearby settlement evacuated on Saturday and moved to Monguno for fear of renewed attacks.

Sheriff had no idea of military casualties but saw "two ambulances carrying dead soldiers" being taken to Monguno, eight kilometres (five miles) away.

A military source who confirmed the attack said 11 troops were killed.

"Four (military) vehicles including an APC (armoured personnel carrier) and a gun truck were carted away by the terrorists," said the military source who asked not to be identified because he was not authorised to speak on the incident.

The attackers were repelled with the help of reinforcements from Monguno, he added.

News of the attack was slow to emerge due to poor communication in the area where Boko Haram has destroyed telecoms infrastructure in the last three years.

Boko Haram has launched repeated attacks recently.

The Islamists late Thursday stormed a base on the outskirts of Jakana, a village 30 kilometres (18 miles) from Maiduguri, firing guns and rocket-propelled grenades before sacking and burning down a police station.

Two weeks ago, the jihadists overran a military base in nearby Yobe state.

On July 14, jihadists believed to be loyal to Boko Haram factional leader Abu Mus'ab Al-Barnawi, raided a base in Jilli village.

Dozens of troops were said to have been killed or missing.

The day before the attack, 23 troops went missing after a military convoy was ambushed by fighters in the Bama area of Borno state, where the Abubakar Shekau faction of Boko Haram is strong.

The attacks underline the threat Boko Haram still poses despite repeated military claims the group is spent force.

Former Governor of Kano state Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has responded to the incessant killings going on in Zamfara State, Nigeria.

He described it as the biggest burial ground in Nigeria on his Official Twitter handle. He questioned how the security situation in the country degenerate so badly.

He added that one death matters to many irrespective of where it takes place.

Zamfara state has been experiencing a spate of killings to the point that the governor who is meant to be the Chief Security Officer by virtue of his office resigned that role. According to Governor Abdulaziz Yari, the security apparatus like the Police is in the hands of the President.

While these killings continue, the call for State Police still has not passed in the bid to evolve true federalism which will also involve a devolution of power to the states and regions.
