Until now, we have seen several ways tech
companies have made their smart devices
capable of recognising users, from face
recognition, fingerprint sensors, voice
recognition, and even iris scanners. Now a
newly published patent suggests Samsung to
go even deeper inside a human body for
recognition. The patent hints towards a future
smartwatch that could use our veins for
identity verification.
In the patent published by the USPTO titled
"Wearable Device and Method of Operating
the Same", the company describes a method
to identify users that takes a scan of the
registered user's vein layout, and then
compares it to the layout of the person trying
to authenticate themselves in the future.
"A wearable device comprising: a sensor
configured to capture a vein image of a user;
and a processor configured to: in response to
a function or an application being selected by
the user, control the sensor to capture the
vein image of the user wearing the wearable
device; identify the user by comparing the
captured vein image with at least one
registered vein image; and in response to
determining that the identified user has an
execution authority for the selected function
or application, execute the function or the
application," says the patent, which was filed
in July last year.
As with all patents, it is not necessary that
the company granted the patent will use the
technology in an actual production device. So,
while we may never see Samsung bring the
vein scanning functionality to future
smartwatches, we at least know the
technologies the company is exploring.
In December, a patent published by the
USPTO hinted that the company might be
working on a smart ring under its wearables
segment. The patent describes how the ring
will work and what functions it might carry.

To date, there are 1,025,109 words in the English language, and yet there are so few words for explaining how we feel emotionally. Sure, you’ve got sad and happy and angry and so on, but where’s the word describing the feelings of excitement the night before a road trip? For John Koenig, filling these holes in our language has been his job. In 2009, he started the website The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows and sought to invent words to fill in the gaps of our language. This is some of what he came up with: ADRONITIS (n) Frustration with how long it takes to get to know someone. MONACHOPSIS (n) The subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place. VELLICHORTHE (n) The strange wistfulness of used bookshops. RUBATOSIS (n) The unsettling awareness of your own heartbeat. KENOPSIA (n) The eerie, forlorn atmosphere of a place that is usually bustling with people but is now abandoned and quiet. ÉNOUEMENT (n) The bittersweetness of having arrived in the future, seeing how things turn out, but not being able to tell your past self. MAUERBAUERTRAUNIGKEIT (n) The inexplicable urge to push people away, even close friends who you really like. JOUSKA (n) A hypothetical conversation that you compulsively play out in your head. SONDER (n) The realization that each passerby has a life as vivid and complex as your own CHRYSALISM (n) the amniotic tranquility of being indoors during a thunderstorm. VEMÖDALEN (n) The frustration of photographic something amazing when thousands of identical photos already exist. ANECDOCHE (n) A conversation in which everyone is talking, but nobody is listening ELLIPSIM (n) A sadness that you’ll never be able to know how history will turn out. KUEBIKO (n) A state of exhaustion inspired by acts of senseless violence. LACHESISM The desire to be struck by disaster – to survive a plane crash, or to lose everything in a fire. EXULANSIS (n) The tendency to give up trying to talk about an experience because people are unable to relate to it. RÜCKKEHRUNRUHE (n) The feeling of returning home after an immersive trip only to find it fading rapidly from your awareness. OPIA (n) The ambiguous intensity of Looking someone in the eye, which can feel simultaneously invasive and vulnerable NODUS TOLLENS (n) The realization that the plot of your life doesn’t make sense to you anymore.. wow !, talk about RAF (Rich And Fast) |
by 2017, that'll be just 1 of the many phones with that kind of ram , we've been seeing 4gb since 2015 so do the math. PS we'll always need laptops espp for students. Try doing auto cad on your tab except u have an iPad pro or surface pro 4 or a google pixel c ( which for obvious reasons cost a fortune ) you might as well hold on to thy laptops and speaking of RAMs, anyone heard about the Sky X9W laptop, with 64gb RAM ? now let's see a phone beat that before Jesus comes. |
If the current lineup of high-end laptops in
the market isn't cutting it for you, Eurocom's
new offering may interest you. The Canadian
computer manufacturer has launched its Sky
X9W laptop, a 'mobile workstation' upgrade to
its already impressive Sky X9 that it released
in October last year. Much like many other
good things in life, the laptop also has a big
price tag, with a starting price point of $2,930
(roughly #879,000).
Eurocom is referring to the Sky X9W as a
mobile workstation, but don't get confused by
the word mobile here. The laptop comes
equipped with top-of-the-line desktop-class
specifications. The Sky X9W is powered by a
quad-core, Intel Core i7 'Skylake-S' 6700K
SoC and Intel Z170 Express 'Skylake' chipset.
Users have the option to opt for Intel Core
'Skylake-S' i5-6600L or Core 'Skylake-S'
i7-6700 SoC.
As for the GPU, the Sky X9W comes with 8GB
Nvidia Quadro M5000M, 4GB Nvidia Quadro
M3000M, or a single 200W desktop class 4GB
Nvidia GeForce GTX 980. Of course, with that
sort of processing power, there is a lot of
cooling that will be required - and, there are
multiple fans on board to do so.
As for the memory, the base configuration
starts with 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, and
goes up to 64GB of DDR4 2666MHz RAM.
The Sky X9W comes equipped with a 17.3-
inch 4K (3840x2160 pixels) display. Users
can also opt for a display with full-HD
(1920x1080 pixels) screen resolution. On the
connectivity front, there's one USB 3.1 Type-
C port, five USB 3.0 ports, a pair of Mini
Display ports that can power up to four
monitors, an HDMI outlet, one headphone, one
mic, two RS45 ports, and supports Wi-Fi. It
also comes with up to 5TB of SSD storage in
a RAID 10 configuration. The maximum
configuration can go up to a whopping
$11,473 (roughly #3,431,100), which includes
a carrying case and a 3-year warranty.
On the software front, users can opt for
Windows 10 , Windows 8.1 , and Windows 7.
The laptop weighs 4.8kg, and measures
428x308x45mm.

Downloading and installing Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones The process for downloading Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones is not too hard, especially if you know how to download and install Windows 10 Technical Preview on your PC. Follow these steps. 1. Head to the Windows Insider page. 2. Click Get Started to sign up for the programme. 3. Enter your Outlook.com email address and password. 4. Click Sign in. 5. Read the terms of service, scroll down and check I accept the terms of this agreement (required). 6. Click Submit. 7. Scroll down and click Phone. 8. Scroll down and click Get the preview. 9. Download the Windows Insider app on your Windows Phone device. 10. Open the app and sign in using your Microsoft account. 11. Tap Get preview builds. 12. Here you'll have to choose between receiving OS updates as they're released or after some bugs have been fixed. Tap Insider Fast to stay on the bleeding edge or pick Insider Slow if you'd like a slightly more reliable build. 13. Take a look at all the warnings and then tap Accept. 14. Tap the Windows button on your phone. 15. Go to Settings > Phone Update. 16. Tap Check for updates. Now you'll be able to download the latest Windows 10 builds for your smartphone. |
Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones is now available to download. This is a pre-release version of Microsoft's upcoming mobile operating system. You should only download this if you want to try a new operating system on your Windows Phone device. Since this is beta software, many of your favourite apps may not work on it and upgrading to it right now is not recommended on your primary phone as the preview is still very much a work in progress. If you have a spare Windows Phone device lying around or if you love playing around with latest (potentially buggy) builds of operating systems, then read on. Supported devices Currently, Microsoft says only six Lumia phones can download and install Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones. These are: Lumia 630 Lumia 635 Lumia 636 Lumia 638 Lumia 730 Lumia 830 More phones will be supported in future builds, but for now only users of the phones listed above can try Windows 10 Technical Preview.

Ever needed to hand your Android smartphone to someone else for a while? If yes, then there's a good chance that you were worried about how easily they could go through your personal data or end up changing preferences or even deleting information like contacts or messages. Fortunately, Android 5.0 Lollipop ships with a system-level guest mode. This lets you quickly switch to a separate guest profile that doesn't have any of your personal data such as messages, installed apps or preferences. This is as good as a fresh install of Android 5.0 Lollipop and the moment you switch back to your Google account, all data saved in the guest mode is removed. This makes it a particularly effective way of letting someone else use your phone for a while. Here's how to enable guest mode on Android 5.0 Lollipop. 1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull down the notifications bar. 2. Tap your avatar on the top right twice. 3. Now you'll see three icons - your Google account, Add guest and Add user. 4. Tap Add guest. 5. Now your smartphone will switch to guest mode. This may take some time and the phone may be slightly slow initially, but in our tests with a Nexus 5 it worked well after a few minutes. 6. When you're done with guest mode, you can easily revert to your Google account. Follow steps 1 and 2 above and tap the icon that shows your Google account. This will delete all data saved in the guest session as well. If your smartphone doesn't have Android 5.0 Lollipop installed, you should check for a pre- loaded guest mode. Some brands such as Xiaomi, LG, Samsung and Huawei pre-load an app that enables you to use guest mode on your smartphone. Different brands name this app differently, so look in your phone's app drawer for apps with names similar to Kids' Mode or Guest Mode. Some Android phones have guest mode embedded at the system level. For example the LG G3 has a guest mode that you can access by going to Settings > General > Privacy > Guest Mode . If your phone doesn't have this feature, the most effective way to keep your personal data safe is by locking down certain apps.

WhatsApp, the most popular instant messaging service used worldwide, has started rolling out the voice calling feature to its users. The company is rolling out the new feature in phases, and it appears some will have to wait longer than others. Here are the answers to all your questions about WhatsApp's voice calling feature. What is WhatsApp voice calling? Until recently, WhatsApp only let users send text messages to their contacts alongside allowing sharing of files (including images, music or even videos). With the addition of voice calling, the app now allows voice calls over mobile data or Wi-Fi - also called VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol. WhatsApp's CEO, Jan Koum, had in February last year announced plans to rollout the voice calling feature by the end of the year In October he revealed that the rollout would be delayed till Q1 2015. Koum cited several obstacles including technical issues before the service could work seamlessly. Interestingly, Koum had also revealed that the WhatsApp development team was working on ways to implement the voice calling service in poor data coverage areas, considering that many WhatsApp users in emerging markets are still on 2G networks. What does it cost? The service is free, and not charged by WhatsApp. Much like other apps like Skype and Viber offering VoIP, WhatsApp voice calling uses a data connection to place a call, whether over Wi-Fi or mobile data. This data use however can be chargeable, based on your Internet plan. For users of unlimited broadband Internet plans, the only worry is if the voice calling feature will work properly on lower speeds once the FUP limit is exhausted. Similarly, users of 2G and 3G data plans who exhaust their allocated data will have to after that point pay per KB used, which can go up to as high as Rs. 0.10 per 10KB on 2G and Rs. 0.04 per 10KB on 3G. Soon after news about WhatsApp's voice calling feature was reported last year, Indian telecom player Airtel announced it would soon roll out a special plan to charge separately for data used on VoIP calls, although the company backtracked on this soon after, saying it was waiting for Trai's consultation paper on OTT players. It will be interesting to see how this plays out once WhatsApp voice calling really takes off. Is it available to everyone? Unfortunately, WhatsApp is rolling out the voice calling feature in phases, which means it is currently available to limited users. The company recently started pushing out the voice calling feature to all Android users with the invite window open for several hours. As of filing this report, the window has closed again, though it may open again without notice. The wait for non-Android users might be longer as WhatsApp's voice-calling feature is currently rolling out to users of Google's mobile operating system. Recently, leaked screenshots claimed to be from a jailbroken iPhone running the WhatsApp v2.11.17.444 beta app showed off the UI of the WhatsApp voice calling feature. The leaked screenshots indicate that the feature might be rolling out iOS users soon, though there's no timeline yet for this rollout on Apple's OS or other non-Android platforms. How do I get voice calling? To get WhatsApp's voice calling feature on Android, one has to download the latest version (2.12.7) of WhatsApp for Android from the company's official website. As of filing this report, Google Play still offers WhatsApp for Android version 2.12.5, which doesn't supports the voice-calling feature. After the latest WhatsApp Android version is installed, you have to ask someone with WhatsApp voice calling already activated to make a WhatsApp call to your number (yes that's the only way). Remember a missed call doesn't activate WhatsApp calling. One has to receive the call and wait for a few seconds before disconnecting to activate WhatsApp voice calling. Once WhatsApp voice calling is enabled, users will notice a completely revamped UI showing a new three- tab layout with Calls, Chats and Contacts. Check our How to Activate WhatsApp Voice Calling post for more details. How does it compare to other services? WhatsApp voice calling is similar in function as other VoIP apps, such as Skype, Viber, and Hangouts. However, considering that WhatsApp is the most widely used instant messaging service on mobile, having the voice calling feature in the app only expands the user experience. Some of the other apps offering voice calling include BBM, which rolled the BBM Voice to Android and iPhone users back in February last year; Line, which launched a data-based calling service in March, and Hike, which rolled out voice calling (dubbed Hike Calls) in January this year for Android users. A word of caution A lot of people are waiting impatiently for WhatsApp's voice calling feature and it seems some people are exploiting this interest. Security company Quick Heal in a blog has reported about a hoax message spreading around various WhatsApp communities. The message reads, "Hey, I am inviting you to try WhatsApp calling click here to activate now-> http://WhatsappCalling.com". Do not click on this link - as we noted earlier the only way to activate WhatsApp calling is to be running the latest version of the Android app and to receive a voice call from someone who already has the service. Quick Heal explains, "this message is a hoax and an attempt to get users to download malicious apps and fill a survey form." So stay away from such messages and enjoy WhatsApp voice calling safely - once you finally receive it.
