winter gloves off? Well, you suffer like a common young professional
– or you get in line for a pair of Hashtag Gloves, which are actually a thing thanks to some
industrious dudes out of Olin College. As Buzzfeed reports, Andrew Deaver, Patrick Huston, Byron Wasti and Keenan Zucker came up
with the idea after watching the Jimmy Fallon and
Justin Timberlake #Hashtag bit on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. They then implemented it during a
24-hour hackaton at Mt. Holyoke College. “There’s conductive fabric on the tips of the
fingers, and we put a voltage across them,” Wasti
explained to the Daily Dot. “And then you just short it, and it detects when you short the signal.
It’s really basic.” In layman's terms: You make the hashtag symbol
with your gloved fingers, say something, and
watch as that hashtag appears in your Twitter
feed. Like so: The gloves are currently in the prototype stage,
but the guys apparently hope to get them to retail
for around $50. This is a pretty big step up from the ubiquitous
"phone friendly" gloves currently littering the
market. Sure, they only sync with Twitter. (For
now?) But when you're looking to complain about
something or rave about your latest food truck

Target Australia is removing "Grand Theft Auto
V" from store shelves after more than 40,000
people who say it encourages players to murder
women for entertainment signed an online
petition asking the retailer to stop selling the
mature video game. The decision is the latest in a long line of
controversies sparked by the 17-year-old video
game series that casts players as car-stealing
criminals. "We've been speaking to many customers over
recent days about the game, and there is a
significant level of concern about the game's
content," said Jim Cooper, Target Australia's
general manager of corporate affairs, on
Wednesday. "We've also had customer feedback in support of us selling the game, and we respect
their perspective on the issue." A petition posted Nov. 29 on Change.org called
for Target Australia to stop selling "GTA V"
because it "makes a game of bashing, killing and
horrific violence against women." The latest instalment in Rockstar Games' action-
adventure series centres on a trio of bank
robbers in Los Santos, a tongue-in-cheek
rendition of Los Angeles. The open-world, third-
person game allows players to visit virtual strip
clubs, hire prostitutes and commit violent acts, as well as play tennis, perform yoga and ride a roller
coaster. "GTA V " originally debuted in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A new edition for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One released last month adds the ability to play in a first-person
perspective, offering a closer glimpse at
gameplay, including sex acts that were
previously obscured. Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Rockstar
Games' parent company, Take-Two Interactive
Software Inc., called the Australian retailer's
decision to stop selling the game disappointing. 'Grand Theft Auto V ' explores mature themes and content similar to those found in many other

A future iteration of the iPhone may might just
rotate in mid-air when falling to save itself from
damage. Apple has been granted a patent for a futuristic iPhone protection system that recognises when a phone is dropped. The device then calculates the point of impact
and shifts the phone's centre of gravity to save
sensitive components, Appleinsider reported. Developed by Nicholas V. King and Fletcher
Rothkopf, the system will rely on sensors to
monitor physical device activity and positioning. The latest iPhone and iPad models already come fitted with accelerometers, gyroscopes and GPS
which will also be used to full effect. The date from these sensors will go to a central
processing unit while the phone is in free fall. A motor will then apply a force inside the phone
and cause it to land on a preferred site, such as
its side or back. Other components in the device are miniature
gas canisters and sliding weights that move
internally to save the phone from damage, the
report added.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has joined an anti- smoking campaign in China, home to the world's
largest number of smokers, featuring in a music
video as part of a social media drive against passive
smoking. Gates plays a cameo role in the Chinese anti-
smoking music video, which is part of a social media campaign launched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation of which he is co-chairman. China has more than 300 million smokers and
another 740 million people are exposed to second-
hand smoke each year, according to the National
Health and Family Planning Commission. Feng Zhe, a gold medalist on the parallel bars in the
2012 Olympic Games, released his song 'Say No to
Forced Smoking', state-run China Daily reported. Gates appears in the video wearing a T-shirt
bearing the words of the song title. Gates' campaign received more than 40 million hits
on microblog and tens of thousands of people
voiced their support for the initiative in its first two
weeks, Yang-Jianyue, deputy director of the Gates
Foundation in China, said. The song is the latest initiative in a social media
campaign that began in October. The foundation has joined with social media and
philanthropic partners in calling on netizens to
submit witty sayings against second-hand smoke. "That's why tobacco control needs social media
where you can have other people talking for you
and becoming part of the solution," Angela Pratt of
the WHO Tobacco Free Initiative in China said. "Smoking is not cool, while smoking control can be
cool and dynamic," Pratt said. The UN health body in China will broadcast anti-
smoking videos submitted by contestants from
both China and the United States through online
outlets including its own Sina Weibo account next
week, she said. Last year, President Xi Jinping met with Gates at the
annual Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan province. Xi said China would deepen its cooperation with the
foundation, especially in HIV/AIDS prevention and
control, smoking control and tuberculosis
intervention.
