InvestmentJason Njoku: Why 50 Million In Revenue Is A Big Deal For Nigerian Entrepreneurs by Intrepidone(op): 7:27am On Nov 28, 2016
A few weeks back, Oo told me that Nigerian startup founders (including myself) lacked ambition, that they think once they get to 50 million naira/year in revenue we have ‘made it’ so then relax, that in SF, people think about world domination, then spend whatever it takes to get there. I smiled. Do you know how hard it is to generate N50m/year in revenue in Nigeria? In a word: Brutal. Like, really really brutal. Generating revenue in Nigeria is like breaking rocks and then bleeding them. For consumer internet companies, it’s something akin to the perfect storm. Customers don’t want to pay and will frustrate you for every naira you earn. Even when you verify a lead and send to a business customer and have a contract saying you they are obligated to pay a commission. They still frustrate the hell out of you. The difficulty in getting paid in Nigeria has to be a silent killer of companies. It’s one of the most frustrating things about operating in Nigeria. It’s a cultural thing, not something fintech can solve.
Let’s zoom out a second.
Africa is home to 700 companies with annual revenue of more than $500m, including 400 with annual revenue above $1 billion, and these companies are growing faster and are more profitable than their global peers. But Africa needs more of them. It has a lower number of large companies. — McKinsey
Private Equity in Africa
The pool of investment targets is growing. Most funds focus on companies that are considered very large in Africa’s context — those with annual revenues of more than $100m, assets of more than $200m, and more than 1,000 employees. There are some 5,000 such companies on the continent, and their number is growing.
However, there are nearly 11,000 African companies with revenues of $10m to $100m, assets of $20m to $200m, and staff of at least 150. This is the fastest-growing segment of African targets — but it remains off the radar of most large private equity funds and principal investors. — Boston Consulting Group
And then we have our beloved Nigeria. GTBank currently enjoys the largest market cap on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Below is their business segmentation (account holders):

When people tell me about a lack of ambition in startup founders, I look at my surroundings and realise that Nigerian companies that operate within Nigeria are ultimately grounded by their surroundings. And guess what people, sorry to tell you, but to create a 50 million naira/year revenue business is really really really hard. The Spark 2.0 model is to fund 5–20 million naira investments in companies who are looking not to raise further capital, but who are focused on building a company which sees the 50 million naira/year milestone as a possibility with that capital. I sit in Nigerian entertainment. Arguably, as a collective, significantly more mass market, dynamic, and revenue generating industry than consumer internet are today. Our top 10 production studio partners easily generate 100 million naira/year (at least 50 percent from IROKO alone). But this is in a 20-year industry which is very mainstream with many structured (albeit immature) revenue opportunities. IROKO acquires content from easily 100+ production houses per year.

Of GTBank’s 350,000 business customers, 300,000 or 86 percent fall within the <N500m bracket, so that would include someone who is making N5m/year too.
This is the reality of Nigeria. Yes, there are 180 million people. But we are not a ‘rich’ nation. The last few years have seen the middle classes completely hollowed out. So a prime market, it is not. The companies created here are not actually that big (compared to South Africa, it’s comical). FirstRand (market cap $19.8B) / Standard Bank ($17.2B) / Nedbank ($8B). Let’s see; GTBank ($2.1B), Zenith ($1.47B) and FBN Holdings/FirstBank ($350m). I would argue that Nedbank, the third largest bank in South Africa, is probably the size (market cap) of the entire banking industry in Nigeria.
So, who cares? And why does this matter in the wider scheme of things for consumer internet in Nigeria? In my simple opinion, because of the structure of Nigeria and her peoples and her companies and her cultures and the relevant size of the companies around her, the ambitions need to be realistic.
At the same meeting was Kola from Ventures Platform Hub waxing lyrical about the incubator/seed investing space in Nigeria. When the topic of liquidity came about, all of the above fully formed in my mind. I was pretty bleak in my assessment; I doubt many consumer internet companies in Nigeria will be valued at more than $10 million before 2020, the investors and obvious exit opportunities are simply not there. Over the last 6 years, Series A ($1 million+) have been between $2–4 million valuations (IROKO at $12 million was a function of capital $3 million raised. If we had raised $1.2 million like ToLet or Hotels, we too would have fit that range). That’s the reality of the market.
I see valuation inflation being driven by outside investors into the seed stage, but unless someone has a significant non-Nigerian revenue base, this is what the gravity will say. Beyond that, I would say the true unicorns in this market will be those who have managed over $100 million* in valuation. Today that would be Konga*, Nairabet and Wakanow. Can’t think of any others in the consumer internet space. I am sure there are.

Yoruba: (adj) Yoruba, as used here, does not refer to the tribe. The Term ‘Yoruba’ describes a heartless, cheating, lying person. Usually male.

1. The White Trad.

via @village_Geh
If you don’t have a white trad – Agbada, Buba and Sokoto – starched with tears and broken hearts, you’re honestly not ready to undertake this journey.

2. The Black Trad.

via GalleriaNews
Wear it. Look devastatingly hot in it. This is for the elite club of lucifer’s henchmen. The Black Trad is for the higher ranking Yoruba Demons.

3. A main phone...usually an iPhone.

Always the latest iPhone. I’ll explain the reason in coming numbers.

4. A supporting phone...Usually a Samsung Galaxy Mobile.

Also always the latest model. I swear there’s a reason why.

5. Dark shades.

Aviators or Ray Bans. These are to protect your eye movements. You can be talking to one girl and impregnating scoping like 4 others.

6. A Plush Ride...Toyota Camry and Above.

Now, Lagos Big Boys can just show off their car keys. That’s not enough for a Yoruba Demon. You have to have the actual car. Girls have to see you in that car. How else will you convince them that you can take care of them?

7. A main chic...an actual main girlfriend.

The girl you show to the world. This is the person whose number you store on the iPhone. The one you love and plan to marry. Almost always an Igbo* girl. She can match you heartlessness for heartlessness.

*Igbo: (adj) Igbo, as used here, does not refer to the tribe. The Term ‘Igbo’ describes a heartless – sometimes cheating – person. Usually female.

8. Like 23 Side Chics.

You populate the Samsung Galaxy contact list with these ones. They’re the ones you spend all your money on. But you never, EVER get photographed with them. That never ends well.

9. A sincere smile.

This is how you melt all girls’ hearts. When you smile, panties should drop, hearts should open, intestines should sing!

10. A lying tongue.

You cannot let them suspect you. You have to be a smooth operator. Lie circles around them. It’s your legacy.

11. A gaping hole where your heart should be.

See, this is the only way you can justify what comes next. You didn’t honestly think you could do this and remain human did you?

12. Roaming eyes.

Your eyes are constantly scouting for the next target. It’s a hard knock life, really.

13. A Cheating Spirit.

When you have no heart, a cheating spirit settles into where your heart should be. And you take your final place as a Yoruba Demon.

14. A string of broken hearts in your wake.

Break them! All of them. 10 broken hearts is nothing to a true Yoruba demon. Break them and walk way like a superstar!

15. A long line of willing hearts in your future.

As a Yoruba Demon, your work is never done. So you keep moving forward. Break more hearts and don’t look back.

Foreign AffairsWhy Blaise Compaore May Be Found Guilty Of Thomas Sankara’s Murder by Intrepidone(op): 6:26am On Dec 25, 2015
An international arrest warrant has been issued for Blaise Compaore in connection with the murder of Thomas Sankara in 1987. Compaore, who was Burkina Faso’s president for 27 years, resigned in 2014 then fled to the Ivory Coast due to the Burkinabé uprising.
Who is Thomas Sankara?
Sankara was a charismatic revolutionary and the president of Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987. As soon as he became the president of the nation, formerly known as the Upper Volta, he re-christened it Burkina Faso which means the ‘land of upright man’.
Part of Sankara’s agenda was to abolish corruption and make his country self-reliant, while most African countries at the time were dependent on foreign aid. His foreign policies were centered on anti-imperialism, debt reduction, nationalizing all land and mineral wealth as well as reducing the power and influence of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
He was also famous for the domestic policies he introduced, concentrating on land reforms, preventing famine, literacy, public health and women empowerment. Sankara’s legacy remains revered throughout Africa today due to the progress he made through his ground breaking reforms in just 4 years as the president.
In 1987, while Sankara was in a meeting with some other government officials, he was killed by some armed men in a military coup d’état, which is widely believed to be organized by his second in command, Blaise Compaore.

Thomas Sankara was President for only 4 years, but he was known all around the world for his ambitious policies
The curious case of Thomas Sankara and Blaise Compaore
Sankara reportedly became friends with Blaise Compaore when they met in Morocco in 1976. They also both became part of a group known as the Communist Officers’ Group. By 1983, Compaore organized a coup, supported by Libya, and through this, Sankara was announced as the president. He proceeded to appoint his friend, Compaore as his deputy. During Sankara’s tenure, Compaore served as the Minister of State at the Presidency and the Minister for Justice. A few years after Sankara became the president though, it was believed that friendship between these two men turned sour.
Therefore a coup organized by Compaore in 1987 didn’t exactly come as a surprise to Sankara and his aides. It was reported that Sankara told his associates that he would surrender his life when the gunshots that heralded the coup were heard.
Although Compaore claimed that he was not involved in the killing of his friend, many have questioned the possibility of his men shooting Sankara without express orders from him (the coup mastermind).

Why Compaore may be a prime suspect
Reportedly, Sankara’s austerity measures did not go down well with some of the people in his cabinet and France, from whom Burkina Faso gained independence. Some of his actions, like making Renault 5 (the cheapest car available in the country then) the official car for those in government, opposing foreign aid and accusing the West of repression, placed him at odds with some factions in his homeland and abroad.
Compaore was one of those who disagreed with Sankara’s style of governance. Therefore when he allegedly plotted the coup, he was also allegedly supported by France, who wanted Sankara out. Here are a few reasons why the recently ousted president of Burkina Faso is a prime suspect in the investigation of Thomas Sankara’s death.
Sankara was buried quickly in an unmarked grave without the knowledge of his family
Compaore reversed all the nationalization policies that his predecessor put in place
He denied the Sankara family permission to exhume the former President’s corpse for about 27 years.
According to the people of Burkina Faso, he tried to repress every memory associated with the late revolutionary and those who protested against his death were jailed.
Once Compaore assumed power, he clung to it for 27 years and he only let go when the Burkinabé protested against his latest bid to rule the country for another five.

A former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has said she did not use her position to steal Nigeria’s money.

Alison-Maduekwe, who looked frail told the Publisher of Ovation Magazine and TheBoss Newspaper, Dele Momodu, said she performed her duties to the best of her knowledge and abilities.

Alison-Madueke was recently arrested by officials of the National Crime Agency, United Kingdom over suspected money laundering activities.

The former minister had been alleged to have used her position as minister to steal billions of naira from the country’s coffers.

In June 2008, Alison-Madueke was subject to a Senate probe after it emerged that as Transport Minister she had paid N30.9bn ($263m) to contractors between December 26 and 31, 2007. She is said to be worth over N1bn.

However, she has never been officially charged or tried for these allegations and has strongly denied any wrongdoing. She was alleged to have spent billions of dollars inappropriately on private jets and responsible for some missing $20bn.

She is also widely accused of reckless spending of government funds.

In October 2009, the Senate indicted her and recommended prosecution for the alleged transfer of N1.2bn into the private account of a toll company without due process and in breach of concession agreement.

However, the allegations have never been taken to law, and the former minister had maintained innocence.

GOOD MORNING!
A man reached 70 years of age and was affected by a disease which made him unable to urinate.

The doctors told him that he needs an operation to cure the disease.

He agreed to do the operation as the problem was giving him severe pain for days.

When the operation was completed the doctor gave him a bill which covered all the costs.

After looking at the bill, the man started crying. Upon seeing this, the doctor said "If the cost is too high then we could make some other arrangements for you.

"The old man replied, "I am not crying because of the money but I am crying because God let me urinate for 70 years and He never sent me a bill!"

Beloved, have you thanked God for His countless blessings today?

Have you thought about the cost of oxygen in the hospital? Yet, God has given us free oxygen (air) since we were born.

Is all that God does for us not worth thanking God for? Can we not see that God is so gracious, merciful and full of compassion?

If you are truly grateful to God for your life, share this message with others, not because you expect a blessing but because you are grateful.

I'm grateful!!!. Here we are in the 11th month of the year. God has kept us alive, safe and sound. Give the Lord

BusinessAmancio Ortega Becomes World Richest Man by Intrepidone(op): 9:42pm On Oct 23, 2015
Bill Gates briefly relinquished his title as the world’s richest man to Spanish retail giant Amancio Ortega Friday morning. Ortega’s net worth hit $80 billion as stock in his holding company Industria de Diseño Textil reached an all-time high of 33.99 Euros per share. Gates quickly reclaimed the top ranking after Ortega’s shares slipped slightly to 33.80 Euros as of 10:52 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. The two billionaires will likely swap the title of world’s richest man in the coming days, as shares of Inditex , Microsoft MSFT +9.43% and their other holdings continue to bounce up and down.

Industria de Diseño Textil, or Inditex, is the parent company to brands Zara , Pull&Bear and Massimo Dutti. The $20 billion (sales) enterprise is the envy of the retail world, with its fast-fashion model that can design, make, ship and sell a piece of clothing in days. That allows Inditex to react quickly to changing customer demands and keep its stores stocked with the latest trends.

Inditex shares are up more than 50% in the last year. Ortega’s gains in the billionaire ranks are even more impressive since Forbes measures fortunes in dollars, and the value of the Euro has fallen from $1.27 a year ago to $1.10 today.

The son of a railway worker, Ortega cofounded Zara with his wife Rosalia Mera in 1975, selling bathrobes and lingerie. He still owns 59% of the company today. The couple divorced years ago, and daughter Sandra Ortega Mera inherited Rosalia’s stake when her mother died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage in August 2013. Sandra is now the second-richest person in Spain, with a fortune of $7.3 billion.
