Car TalkHenry Ford: The Man Who Developed The First Affordable Automobile by Intrepidone(op): 7:03am On May 23, 2015
Born on July 30, 1863, near Dearborn, Michigan, Henry Ford created the Ford Model T car in 1908 and went on to develop the assembly line mode of production, which revolutionized the industry. As a result, Ford sold millions of cars and became a world-famous company head.

The company lost its market dominance but had a lasting impact on other technological development and U.S. infrastructure.

Famed automobile manufacturer Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863, on his family’s farm in Wayne County, near Dearborn, Michigan.

When Ford was 13 years old, his father gifted him a pocket watch, which the young boy promptly took apart and reassembled. Friends and neighbors were impressed, and requested that he fix their timepieces too.

He was unsatisfied with farm work and left home the following year, at the age of 16, to take an apprenticeship as a machinist in Detroit. In the years that followed, he would learn to skillfully operate and service steam engines, and would also study bookkeeping.

In 1888, Ford married Clara Ala Bryant and briefly returned to farming to support his wife and son, Edsel. But three years later, he was hired as an engineer for the Edison Illuminating Company. In 1893, his natural talents earned him a promotion to chief engineer.

All the while, Ford developed his plans for a horseless carriage, and in 1896, he constructed his first model, the Ford Quadricycle.

Within the same year, he attended a meeting with Edison executives and found himself presenting his automobile plans to Thomas Edison.

Thomas Edison encouraged Ford to build a second, better model. After a few trials building cars and companies, in 1903, Henry Ford established the Ford Motor Company. Ford introduced the Model T in October of 1908, and for several years, the company posted 100 percent gains.

However, more than for his profits, Ford became renowned for his revolutionary vision, the manufacture of an inexpensive automobile made by skilled workers who earn steady wages. In 1914, he sponsored the development of the moving assembly line technique of mass production.

Simultaneously, he introduced the $5-per-day wage as a method of keeping the best workers loyal to his company. Simple to drive and cheap to repair, half of all cars in America in 1918 were Model T’s.

From a social perspective, Henry Ford’s was marked by seemingly contradictory viewpoints.

In business, Ford offered profit sharing to select employees who stayed with the company for six months and, most important, who conducted their lives in a respectable manner.

The company’s “Social Department” looked into an employee’s drinking, gambling and otherwise uncouth activities to determine eligibility for participation. Ford was also an ardent pacifist and opposed World War I, even funding a peace ship to Europe.

Later, in 1936, Ford and his family established the Ford Foundation to provide ongoing grants for research, education and development.

But despite these philanthropic leanings, Ford was also a committed anti-Semite, going as far as to support a weekly newspaper, The Dearborn Independent, which furthered such views.

Henry Ford died of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 7, 1947, at the age of 83, near his Dearborn estate, Fair Lane.

Ford, considered one of America’s leading businessmen and is credited today for helping to build America’s economy during the nation’s vulnerable early years. His legacy will live on for decades to come

BusinessKia Unveils Made-in-nigeria Sorento by Intrepidone(op): 4:56am On May 13, 2015
The unveiling of an all-new Kia Sorento on Tuesday in Lagos has become one of the highpoints of the 10th Lagos motor and auto part show.

This is exciting because it is the first locally assembled sport utility vehicle to be introduced by the representative of the Korean manufacturing company in Nigeria, Dana Motors. And it has chosen to launch it in Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of the country.

As witnessed in most auto shows in other parts of the world, the introduction of new vehicles by auto manufacturers or their representatives is always the main attraction for visitors to the event.

Although this year may not have recorded the large turnout of participants expected at the annual Lagos event, some analysts note that the presence of Toyota Nigeria Limited, the leader in the industry, with a few prominent players like Kia displaying current and new models, has enabled the show to retain its usual glamour.

Kia, which describes the made-in-Nigeria Sorento as iconic, says its teeming customers will find the vehicle very roomy, comfortable and exciting.
PoliticsObasanjo, Buhari, Others Attend Jonathan’s Last C.-of -S. Meeting by Intrepidone(op): 4:42am On May 13, 2015
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, were among living former Nigerian leaders who on Tuesday attended a meeting of the Council of State, held inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Council consists of the President (as the Chairman), Vice President, all former Presidents or former Heads of State, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, all state governors and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

That was the last time President Goodluck Jonathan would be presiding over the meeting, since he will be handing over to Buhari on May 29.

As at the time the meeting started at around 11am, former Nigerian leaders in attendance included Buhari, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Chief Ernest Shonekan and Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar.

Obasanjo however joined the meeting at about 12:15pm.

Obasanjo and Buhari had been avoiding most of the Council’s meetings under Jonathan’s leadership.

The President-elect however made a surprise attendance at the last meeting held on February 5.

At that meeting, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, briefed members on preparation for the general elections.

Council members had then been divided over the desirability or otherwise of postponing the general elections from the earlier scheduled dates of February 14 and 28.
SportsArsenal Have Some Swans To See Off by Intrepidone(op): 10:00am On May 10, 2015
Arsenal clearly have some scores to settle with Swansea
For the second week in a row, we wait until Monday to do battle. With the EPL title in Chelsea’s hands, we turn our attention to finishing second, which would be our best finish since 2004/05 when we again finished behind Chelsea. Repeating that season, in which we also won the FA Cup, would position us as legitimate challengers to the Chelsea-Man City hegemony of the last few seasons. First, though, we have to fight our way past Swansea.

In any other year, a team in Swansea’s position might be counted on to start mailing it in. Sitting in eighth place, it would take an epic series of results to close the eight-point gap between them and Liverpool to finish fifth. However, Chelsea’s Europa League spot, earned by winning the League Cup, will go to the sixth-place finishers, and that brings us to the paradox.

Should Arsenal win the FA Cup, this would earn us a Europa League spot – but this would go to the seventh place finishers. While that’s currently Southampton, Swansea are within a stone’s throw of them – just four points. Will this give Garry Monk’s outfit any further motivation?

Swansea do look a bit brighter than those above them; Southampton, Tottenham, and Liverpool have each staggered and stumbled enough to inspire the Swans to dream. This weekend already, Southampton and Tottenham have lost in ignominious fashion, and this opens the door for Swansea to move to within a point of the Saints and two of Spurs. If those circumstances aren’t enough, it’s worth remembering that this squad did kick us when we were down early in the season, winning 2-1 in November.

While they might lack the fight or verve they showed, we shouldn’t underestimate them. Their 4-2-3-1, with old friend Lukasz Fabianski between the sticks, has been strong enough to earn them some vital wins over bigger clubs. I, for one, am always a bit nervous when I see Ki Sung-Yueng; the Korean midfielder seems to have a knack for finding a stunning goal. The former Spur has been pulling strings for the Swans, notching 10 assists on the season.

PoliticsThumbs Up To Nigerians by Intrepidone(op): 10:57am On Apr 16, 2015
The Indonesia ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Harry Purwanto said on Wednesday that Nigerians were among the best people in the world.

The envoy said this during an interview News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said he had observed that a few Nigerians were creating a bad impression about the country abroad.

He called on the majority to do their best to ensure that the minority did not have their way in creating a bad image about the country.

“Nigerians are really good people it is only the minority few that are giving the country the bad image in other countries such as Indonesia.

”Nigerians are not as people perceive them abroad,” purwanto said.

Purwanto said Nigerians with legitimate business were always welcome in Indonesia.

“Nigerians travelling abroad should prove that they are really good.

“They should not violate the laws of the land and drown the voice of the minority that is giving the country a bad name”, the envoy said.

Speaking on Nigerians on death row in Indonesia, the envoy said they were convicted after all due legal processes had been exhausted.

He said their trial went through three stages, culminating at the Supreme Court, adding that they had access to judicial experts throughout their trail.

He told NAN that Indonesia and Nigeria had a lot to benefit from each other, adding that as developing countries they could partner in tourism, education, media among areas.

Purwanto congratulated Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on his victory at the presidential election and called on him to implement his campaign promises.

He said it was interesting that Nigeria, given its population and population was showing a good example in consolidating democracy in Africa.

PoliticsRe: A Former Dictator Is A Better Choice Than A Failed President - THE ECONOMIST by Intrepidone(m): 9:55pm On Feb 05, 2015
tbaba1234:
The least awful
A former dictator is a better choice than a failed president

SOMETIMES there are no good options. Nigeria goes to the polls on February 14th to elect the next president, who will face problems so large—from rampant corruption to a jihadist insurgency—that they could break the country apart, with dire consequences for Nigerians and the world.

And yet, as Africa’s biggest economy stages its most important election since the restoration of civilian rule in 1999, and perhaps since the civil war four decades ago, Nigerians must pick between the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, who has proved an utter failure, and the opposition leader, Muhammadu Buhari, a former military dictator with blood on his hands (see article). The candidates stand as symbols of a broken political system that makes all Nigeria’s problems even more intractable.

Start with Mr Jonathan, whose People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has run the country since 1999 and who stumbled into the presidency on the death of his predecessor in 2010. The PDP’s reign has been a sorry one. Mr Jonathan has shown little willingness to tackle endemic corruption. When the governor of the central bank reported that $20 billion had been stolen, his reward was to be sacked.

Worse, on Mr Jonathan’s watch much of the north of the country has been in flames. About 18,000 people have died in political violence in recent years, thousands of them in January in several brutal attacks by Boko Haram, a jihadist group that claims to have established its “caliphate” in territory as large as Belgium. Another 1.5m people have fled their homes. The insurgency is far from Mr Jonathan’s southern political heartland and afflicts people more likely to vote for the opposition. He has shown little enthusiasm for tackling it, and even less competence. Quick to offer condolences to France after the attack on Charlie Hedbo, Mr Jonathan waited almost two weeks before speaking up about a Boko Haram attack that killed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of his compatriots.

The single bright spot of his rule has been Nigeria’s economy, one of the world’s fastest-growing. Yet that is largely despite the government rather than because of it, and falling oil prices will temper the boom. The prosperity has not been broadly shared: under Mr Jonathan poverty has increased. Nigerians typically die eight years younger than their poorer neighbours in nearby Ghana.

Goodbye Jonathan
Voters have ample cause to send Mr Jonathan packing. In a country where power has often changed through the barrel of a gun, the opposition All Progressives Congress has a real chance of winning through the ballot box. Yet its candidate, Mr Buhari, is an ex-general who, three decades ago, came to power in a coup. His rule was nasty, brutish and mercifully short. Declaring a “war against indiscipline”, he ordered whip-wielding soldiers to ensure that Nigerians formed orderly queues. His economics, known as Buharism, was destructive. Instead of letting the currency depreciate in the face of a trade deficit, he tried to fix prices and ban “unnecessary” imports. He expelled 700,000 migrants in the delusion that this would create jobs for Nigerians. He banned political meetings and free speech. He detained thousands, used secret tribunals and executed people for crimes that were not capital offences.

Should a former dictator with such a record be offered another chance? Surprisingly, many Nigerians think he should. One reason is that, in a country where ministers routinely wear wristwatches worth many times their annual salary, Mr Buhari is a sandal-wearing ascetic with a record of fighting corruption. Few nowadays question his commitment to democracy or expect him to turn autocratic: he has repeatedly stood for election and accepted the outcome when he lost. He would probably do a better job of running the country, and in particular of tackling Boko Haram. As a northerner and Muslim, he will have greater legitimacy among villagers whose help he will need to isolate the insurgents. As a military man, he is more likely to win the respect of a demoralised army.

We are relieved not to have a vote in this election. But were we offered one we would—with a heavy heart—choose Mr Buhari. Mr Jonathan risks presiding over Nigeria’s bloody fragmentation. If Mr Buhari can save Nigeria, history might even be kind to him.
