Politics / News Analysis: 2015 And The Fight For The Soul Of PDP by ionigeria: 11:21pm On Sep 01, 2013 |
The Special Convention of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which took place in Abuja on Saturday was prior to the event aptly tagged by some newspapers “a make or mar convention”. What was at stake on the surface was election of members to fill National Working Committee (NWC) positions which became vacant as a result of the fact that the Independent Electoral Committee (INEC) was dissatisfied with how the previous occupants of the positions were elected. All positions, apart from that of the National Chairman were vacant before the Convention. But deep down, what was at stake was who becomes the Presidential candidate of the Party in 2015. It was therefore vitally important for the different presidentially aspirants to take control of the Party by ensuring that their loyalists occupy most of the NWC positions. The struggle for the presidential ticket of PDP is so fierce because since 1999 when the military handed over political power to civilians, the Party has been producing the presidents of the country. So, whoever gets the Party’s ticket is most likely going to emerge as the president in 2015 Click for more: http://www.ionigeria.com/index.php/en/news/3669-the-soul-of-pdp
