I have with the Nigerian Army and I have to be really honest with you, being an army isn't easy here in Nigeria especially if you do not have a strong godfather. I would have joined the army but I thought of some things.
Nigerian soldiers are underpaid.
You sign with your life once you join. I'll tell you a story, I was very fortunate to have served directly under a commanding office of the battalion, I was highly loved by all and didn't experience stress so I had the opportunity to earn extra moneya part from the one I got paid by the CO, the soldiers and all. I decided to teach and so a lady who was the wife of a very intelligent major hired me to help tutor her son who didn't know how to read and all. Some months into teaching, it was her wedding anniversary, her husband couldn't come home as he was in Maiduguri fighting against boko haram. Thursday or Friday of that same week, I went to tutor her child, my lodge was just 2 minutes walk to her house in the officer's quarters, on getting there, I saw people outside and a book on a table that was open. I didn't quite understand what was happening, I got in, usual me would beckon on the boy, play with him and the younger sister and then ask him to come over to be taught, hmph, when I entered, I saw people in the parlour, she was seated on the ground and had had her hair shaved. I knew something was wrong but I didn't want to believe that there had been a demise of a loved one, she saw me and said 'my husband is dead, Raina(not my real name), daddy David is dead, my husband is dead". I was taken aback and suddenly I felt pangs of sorrow for the her and the kids, I've lost loved ones, the most painful one being the death of my dad (God bless his soul) so I knew what was ahead. I went to her to comfort her (he died some weeks to Christmas) and till I left (about 8 months later) I'd go there to keep her company, play with her etc. Her husband had stepped on an IED, once you die in the Nigerian army, that's the end.
There are great people in the Nigerian army but if you aren't careful, you'll lose your sanity.
You'll be disliked by some.officers and get sent to the the mess a lot.
Some will plot to Send you to red zones so be prepared.
There's more to the Nigerian army that meet the eyes so I'll advise you to pray to whatever you believe in to first know if you should join or not before you decide.
I cannot tell you all the things you'll face and this isn't me trying to dissuade you but are you strong enough?
