Nigerian superstar, Naeto C and South African airwaves hotshot, AKA, have been announced as the co-hosts of the upcoming 10th Annual Channel O Africa Music Video Awards. The two will bring a two star punch to the star-studded live show, taking place on Saturday, 30 November at Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown Soweto, South Africa, which is expected to be attended by the who’s who of the African entertainment scene. Naeto C and AKA’s star wattage will also be on full display to music fans throughout Africa as the two keep the action rolling during the broadcast, which goes out Live on Channel O at 20:00 Central African Time. Speaking Naeto C said, “I’m really excited to host this year’s Channel O Africa Music Video Awards, especially on its 10th anniversary. To be a part of this experience is totally awesome and I look forward to sharing this magical moment with the rest of Africa on November 30th.” The Nigerian artist’s sentiments are echoed by AKA who said, “I am very honoured to co-host this celebration of Africa’s finest talent with Naeto C. I won my first Channel O Music Video award in 2011 and two years later, being in this position is testament to my loyal following. Thank You to Channel O and the fans, it’s going to be a classic night.” Naeto C has enjoyed a lengthy association with the Channel O Africa Music Video Awards. In 2009 he won the highly coveted Video of the Year award for his blowout hit, “Ki Ni Big Deal”, in 2010 the track “Ako Mi Ti Poju” saw him take home the Most Gifted Hip Hop Video award and a year later, Most Gifted African West Video was awarded to “10 Over 10”. AKA, meanwhile, is a multiple nominee in 2013, with no less than three nods in the Video of the Year category – for his own song “Jealousy” and two collaborations, Xtatic/AKA & Priddy Ugly’s “Hit ‘Em Up” and Zeus ft AKA & Tumi’s “#DatsWasup”. “Jealousy” is also in the running for Most Gifted Hip Hop – a category AKA won in 2011 for another of his growing list of chart- bangers, “Victory Lap”. The 10th Annual Channel O Africa Music Video Awards have all the makings of a thrilling affair when the live event takes place on Saturday, 30 November in Soweto. |
Sports generally and football in particular has become big business that governments at all levels and corporate citizens globally constantly sponsor sporting events on account of the benefits that come out of the games. This is hinged on its huge ability as a public relations vehicle, employment and financial generator. The provision of proper infrastructure to create the right environment to tap into the potentials therein is therefore of importance to corporate citizens who use sports as a means of branding and advertising their goods and services as well as governments vested with the mandate to manage the people’s commonwealth. The Governor of Akwa Ibom State Dr. Godswill Akpabio CON, as a responsible chief executive, committed to the overall growth and development of his people has, with the approval of the state legislature, invested huge resources into building a magnificent stadium in the state. Work on the gigantic project has reached advanced stage. On assumption of office in 2007 told the people that their lives would never remain the same hereafter. And so, when Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan GCFR, on 27th October, 2012, came to the State on a working visit laid the foundation for this edifice. “The promise keeper!” as Governor Akpabio is fondly called says that building a sports edifice such as the Akwa Ibom International stadium with multi-faceted facilities like tennis courts, swimming pools, basketball courts, tartan tracks for track events and others is laying the right foundation where our youths can nurture their talents and become big stars like Vincent Enyeama, Serena Williams and David Beckham with winning mentality and enormous earning power. He added that the country must consolidate on the gains of the Super Eagles that recently won AFCON 2013 top prize, as well as other sports ambassadors who have equally brought honour to Nigeria. The governor says sports must not be taken lightly as it means ‘unity’ in Niger |
Nigeria are through to the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup after getting the better of Uruguay in a fine 2-0 victory in the last eight. Among their outstanding performers was goalkeeper Dele Alampasu, who has endeavoured to learn from past mistakes as he continues to make himself at home on the world stage. There was no mistaking the Golden Eaglets' dressing room in the bowels of Sharjah Stadium on Saturday, the African hopefuls united in expressing their euphoria following another impressive demonstration of force. Laughter and cries of joy escaped from inside as their imposing No1, standing nearly two metres tall, exited to share his thoughts with FIFA.com . "They're the toughest team we've faced so far," said Alampasu, fresh from playing his part in eliminating La Celeste . "They're good tactically and very disciplined. They switch well between long balls and short passes, and we had to be very focused." The South American side certainly tried everything to find a weakness in their rivals' rearguard, only to come up short, and several Uruguay players shed tears of anguish when they conceded the second goal ten minutes from time. Leader at the back Nigeria's leader at the back was all smiles, in contrast, having silenced the likes of Leandro Otormin, Francis D'Albenas and Franco Pizzichillo. "I had my eye on those three in particular," he said. "I forbade my team-mates from letting them shoot. I kept telling them to stay on top of them and block their efforts. I shouted at my defenders a lot to adjust their positioning and marking." The custodian had to do more than simply use his voice, however, notably producing an excellent double save in the first half before killing off any suspense with a solid showing at the end. "It's my job to save my team, to save my country," he said. "We're all fighting to be the best we possibly can and do something big in this tournament." Having helped themselves to 20 goals thus far, Nigeria are the most prolific team in the competition, but that has by no means made life easy for Alampasu. While his outfield colleagues have proved adept at limiting danger, the 16-year-old has had to remain switched on at all moments. "That means you have to be focused all the time," he explained. "You need to make the right choices at the right moments, and you never know when something might happen. You have to always be ready if you don't want to make a mistake." |

sweden scored us 2 goals in the first have because of the goal keeper wrong decision and another defensive error.. if they were a better team, am sure we wouldnt have gotten the draw. Nigeria has improved in its defense and i dont see sweden beating us again. remember we were 2 goals down but was able to get a draw. what if they did not score the two goals? up naija |
The Newcastle manager will go head-to-head with the Portuguese when Chelsea visit on Saturday and admits his already struggling side face a tough test Alan Pardew believes Jose Mourinho is "arguably the best manager in the world", with his Newcastle side set to host Chelsea on Saturday. The Magpies will be desperate to make amends for their defeat in the Tyne-Wear derby, but face a Blues side enjoying a six-game winning streak. Victory for Chelsea would see them leapfrog table-topping Arsenal, with the Gunners facing Liverpool later in the day, and Pardew admits he faces a tough test to better this Portuguese counterpart. "They have a manager who is arguably the best in the world,” he told The Evening Chronicle. "You can see he is at the top of his game. "Chelsea are difficult to break down and difficult to score against. It gives them a great platform to win games." Newcastle took Manchester City into extra-time during Wednesday’s Capital One Cup fourth- round defeat, and their manager expects the resolute display to stand them in good stead for the game against Chelsea. "That performance will trigger results," he insisted. "We look at the last four or five games and we've been pretty good. "We have our fans backing with us at home and that is important. It is very important that they are behind us. It is important to have that to unsettle a big team." Mourinho offended Manuel Pellegrini with an over-the-top celebration following Fernando Torres’ last-minute winner against Manchester City last weekend, but Pardew believes such antics should not be taken too seriously. "He's not jumping in my crowd," he joked. "He's a great personality for the league. "I don't need to give him any more credit. I just hope to turn them over and make them miserable." |
Anyone who's followed Côte d’Ivoire’s progress at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE will know that the side is always up for a fight. The key to success with such a battling approach is a sturdy defence, and the Ivorian side are certainly not lacking in that department. While Italy, Uruguay and New Zealand enjoyed varying degrees of success when pitted against the Baby Elephants’ compact and disciplined defensive unit in the group stage of the competition, they all found it extremely tough. In the Round of 16, Morocco found themselves heading home having failed to find sufficient space to exploit their speed and considerable attacking talents against a massed west-African defensive shield. Now, the next battle awaiting Ibrahima Kamara’s men is their quarter-final clash against Argentina. |
Holders Mexico edged three-time champions Brazil on a marathon session of penalties after the quarter-final from Dubai’s Rashid Stadium ended tangled 1-1 after regular time. The two goals didn’t come until the last ten minutes of this cautious affair that sees the Mexicans through to the semi-finals, where they will meet either Argentina or Côte d'Ivoire. The fourth meeting between the two nations in the U-17 world finals started slowly and cautiously. The South Americans, who have scored 18 goals in four games during their time in UAE, tried and tried in the first half against the defending champions, but they were unable to get control of the contest as Mexico defended manfully. It wasn’t until the 37th minute that the game – which promised to be a showpiece for two attack- minded sides – saw its first genuine chance on goal. Ivan Ochoa collected the ball inside his own half and ran half the length of the pitch before being denied by the knee of Marcos. One minute before the whistle went for half-time, Brazil’s Indio tried his luck with a free-kick from way out. He hit it well, but the ball could only crash against the crossbar. Seconds later, Caio had a nice effort from the edge of the box that soared regrettably over the frame of goal. The game continued in the same fashion at the start of the second half, with neither side able to carve out many scoring chances of note. But in the 80th minute, the Mexicans turned the game on its ear. A free-kick from the right side was flicked on near the penalty spot and Ivan Ochoa was alert on the back post to hit home with his first touch. The three-time champions were stung into immediate response. Nathan, Brazil’s outstanding playmaker, got on the end of a ping-ponging series of deflections in the Mexican penalty area to fire home his own rebound from 12 yards out and level the scores with five minutes to go. Brazil pressed hard in the dying moments, but the sides couldn’t be separated and the game went to a penalty shootout - the first of these finals. Mexico goalkeeper Raul Gudino got his hands to both of Brazil’s first shots, but he failed to keep them out. All the kicks went in after that, until captain Ulises Rivas saw his effort saved by Marcos. Gudino came to Mexico’s rescue, though, by saving from Gabriel to keep El Tri alive. The kick count rose. Brazil’s keeper Marcos scored and Auro injured himself scoring his penalty. Finally the deadlock was broken when Mosquito’s second kick was saved by Gudino and Alejandro Diaz scored to make it 11-10 in favour of Mexico. www.fifa.com |
