The Egyptian football powerhouse showed their class and quality in the second-half after the Soweto giants were reduced to 10 men. Al Ahly successfully defended their Caf Champions League crown after securing a 3-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the final, which took place at the Stade Mohammed V in Morocco on Saturday.

Goals from Mohamed Sherif, Mohamed Magdi Afsha and Amr El Solia inspired the Egyptian giants to a well-deserved win over their South African opponents, who were reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Happy Mashiane in the 45th minute.

The Amakhosi were making their maiden appearance in the final and had a decent start to the match - pressing high with their attackers Samir Nurkovic, Mashiane and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo showing good movement in Al Ahly's half.

The first shot on target of the match went to Amakhosi, but Nurkovic's curling effort was easily saved by goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, who was well-positioned.

Al Ahly took control of the encounter after the half-hour mark with El Solia seeing a lot of the ball in midfield. The 32-year-old midfielder played a smart through pass for Ali Maaloul in the left flank, but the Tunisia international's low cross-come-shot was well-saved by Daniel Akpeyi.

Coach Stuart Baxter took charge of Chiefs for the first time after receiving his South African work permit and the experienced British coach opted for Akpeyi between the sticks. The Nigeria goalkeeper, who got the nod ahead of Itumeleng Khune and Bruce Bvuma, had played six matches without conceding a single goal in this season's tournament before the final.

Chiefs ended the first half on a bad note as they were reduced to 10 players, with Mashiane being shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle on marauding right-back Akram Tawfik following a VAR check.

The score was 0-0 at the interval and Baxter made a change prior to the start of the second half - pulling out Ngcobo and he introduced Khama Billiat, 2016 Caf Champions League title winner with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Tawfik, who was making dangerous overlapping runs, played a defence-splitting pass for Sherif and the tournament's top scorer scored his sixth goal in the competition to make it 1-0 to Al Ahly in the 53rd minute. Sherif was involved when Al Ahly went 2-0 up in the 64th minute as he set up Afsha, who then curled the ball into the top left corner - beating Akpeyi hands down.

Chiefs were looking disjointed at the back with Sherif tormenting the defence and he grabbed his second assist when his backheel pass was turned home by El Solia to extend Al Ahly's lead to 3-0 with 17 minutes left.

El Solia's well-taken goal sealed Al Ahly's emphatic 3-0 victory on the night with the Cairo giants having taken advantage of their numerical superiority over Chiefs.

The win saw the Red Devils clinch a record-extending 10th Caf Champions League title and they qualify for this year's Fifa Club World Cup.

The Santiago Bernabeu chief has attempted to clarify the comments he made in a leaked audio file that was originally recorded 15 years ago. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has responded to claims that he was secretly recorded calling Iker Casillas and Raul 'frauds'.

Perez became Real president for the first time back in July 2000, and oversaw a stellar six-year spell that saw the team win two La Liga titles and the Champions League before announcing his resignation.

A leaked audio file has now been published during which the 74-year-old, who returned to Santiago Bernabeu for a second term in 2009, can allegedly be heard placing some of the blame for his original exit at the feet of two legendary Blancos players.

What was Perez reported to have said?
Raul left the Spanish giants in 2010 but is now serving as the head coach of their Castilla side, while Casillas departed the Bernabeu in 2015 before taking up a role in the Real Madrid foundation after hanging up his gloves.

Both men worked under Perez again upon his return to the club, but the president was scathing in his assessment of the pair in the 2006 recording that originally surfaced in El Confidencial on Tuesday.

"He is not good enough to be the goalkeeper for Real Madrid, what do you want me to say?" Perez reportedly says of Casillas in the audio. "He is not. And he never has been.

"It is the big mistake we made. They defend him so much. But, well, he is one of the big frauds of Madrid. The second is Raul. The two biggest frauds at Madrid are first Raul and then Casillas.

"[Zinedine] Zidane's a great guy. And [David] Beckham and Ronaldo. ... But then there are the others that think that ... let's see. Raul is a bad person.

"He thinks Madrid is his and he uses everything there is in Madrid, developing everything for his own benefit. Him and his agent. They are to blame for Madrid not doing well.

"Look, I left, among other reasons, because of him. He is a negative guy, he is destroying Madrid."

Perez's response
Perez has now issued a statement via Real's official website in response to the leak, claiming that his comments have been taken out of context and have only been reported now due to his involvement in the controversial Super League plans that sent shockwaves across the football world in April.

"Following the article published by El Confidencial that features comments that I have been credited as having made, I believe that it is important to clarify that the published quotes were part of conversations secretly recorded by Mr Jose Antonio Abellan, who has been trying to sell the recordings for many years without any success," the Spaniard has said.

"I find it surprising that they have been published today by El Confidencial, despite the time that has elapsed. They are isolated quotes that were part of conversations and have been taken out of the wider context in which they were made.

"I understand that the fact that they have been published now, so many years on from the time the conversations took place, owes to my involvement as one of the driving forces behind the Super League.

"I have placed the matter in the hands of my lawyers, who are examining the course of action to be taken."

The Gunners have reached an agreement with the Belgian club over a transfer for the 21-year-old midfielder
Arsenal have agreed a deal in principle worth up to £18 million ($25m) with Anderlecht for the transfer of Albert Lokonga.

The Gunners have been locked in talks with the Belgium club for weeks over the 21-year-old and have seen previous bids rejected. But an agreement has now been reached, with the midfielder set to be given the green light to undergo his medical.

How much will Arsenal pay?
Arsenal have agreed an initial fee believed to be around £15m ($21m) for Lokonga. That is a fee that will increase, however, due to several add-ons that will be included in the final deal.

In all, Arsenal are expected to pay close to £18m for the young midfielder, should those add-ons and bonuses be met.

What happens now?
Lokonga will soon undergo his medical ahead of his move to Arsenal. It is understood that the medical will take place in Belgium to help get the transfer finalised in as quick a time as possible. He will then travel to London, where he will have to go through a period of isolation due to Covid regulations.

Reports in Belgium have suggested that Lokonga could fly direct to Scotland to play a part in Arsenal’s five-day training camp which gets under way on Monday, but Goal has been told that is not the case. Arsenal are hopeful, however, that the deal could be finalised ahead of the club’s week-long stay in America for the Florida Cup.

What’s happening with Tavares?
Portuguese left-back Nuno Tavares has been in London since Friday ahead of his £8m transfer from Benfica. He had his medical in Portugal before travelling to England and Arsenal are hopeful of being able to confirm his move soon.

Tavares has been in isolation since arriving last week, but Arsenal are hoping he will be able to play a part in next week’s training camp in Scotland.

The Super Eagles midfielder is set for a new adventure in the Premier League with the Hornets. Watford have completed the signing of Oghenekaro Etebo on a season-long loan from Stoke City.

The 25-year-old is the latest Nigerian to join Xisco Munoz's side ahead of the 2021-22 season after Emmanuel Dennis switched from Club Brugge on a permanent deal. Etebo's move to Vicarage Road is his third loan move away from Stoke City having spent the last one and a half seasons in La Liga with Getafe and Turkish Super Lig side Galatasaray.

The Nigeria international has been at Stoke since 2018 and he played 45 matches in the Championship with two goals to his name.

"Watford FC is pleased to confirm the signing of Peter Etebo on a season-long loan from Stoke City, with an option to buy," read a statement on the club's website.

"The box-to-box midfielder, 25, is capped 38 times by Nigeria's senior team, having previously turned out 19 times for the Super Eagles' Under-23s.

"Since joining the Potters in June 2018, Etebo has also spent time on loan at Getafe and Galatasaray, appearing in the Europa League for the latter."

The 2015 Africa U23 Cup of Nations winner started his professional football career in the Nigerian top-flight with Warri Wolves where he spent two years before moving to Portuguese club Feirense in 2016. The 25-year-old is a key figure in Gernot Rohr's Super Eagles and he was part of the team that won bronze at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Watford secured an immediate return to the Premier League last season after they finish second in the second division, behind Norwich City. Also on Friday, the Hornets signed 19-year-old Nigerian descent Dapo Mebude on a two-year deal with the option for a two-year extension.

Mebude was born in London to Nigerian parents but he is a Scotland youth international having played for their U16, U17, U18 and U19 teams. The two new signings join Nigeria centre-back William Troost-Ekong, Isaac Success, Senegal's Ismaila Sarr and Morocco's Adam Masina as the latest African stars at Watford.

The Hornets will begin their 2021-22 Premier League campaign with a home match against Aston Villa on August 14.

Saturday's Copa America final between Brazil and Argentina brings together two of the biggest footballing nations on the planet.

The hosts hope to defend the title they also won on home soil two years ago, while the underdog Albiceleste are desperate to end a run of six lost finals and take major silverware for the first time since 1993.

The clash, held on the eve of Euro 2020's own decider, is also notable for two players in particular. Neymar and Lionel Messi have both enjoyed stunning Copa campaigns to date, but only one can prevail at the Estadio Maracana.

It is perhaps no exaggeration to say that their final meeting is the most significant in terms of pure star power since Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo locked horns at the 1998 World Cup with both men at the apex of their scintillating careers. The two No.10s enjoy the tightest of personal bonds. They clicked instantly on and off the field when the Brazilian moved to Barcelona from Santos and, particularly when Luis Suarez joined to complete the trio 12 months later, formed one of the most potent forward partnerships in football history.

Messi now sits on four goals and five assists for the tournament, contributing directly to nine of his team's 11 goals, while Neymar, so often the man who brings dazzle and surprise to this Brazil team which prides efficiency over flowing football, sits only slightly further back with two and three respectively, albeit having played one game fewer than his former team-mate.

Saturday, then, brings together the Copa's two best players, a six-time Ballon d'Or winner and the man often labelled as his successor as the best in the world, and, as befits any big South American clash, there will be no place for faint hearts on the Maracana pitch.

“I want a final against Argentina. I have a lot of friends there. And Brazil are going to win,” Neymar told reporters following Monday's victory over Chile to raise the temperature going into the final.

For his part, Messi was rather more cautious. “Brazil with Neymar are going to be extremely tough,” he signalled on Tuesday. “We know their potential, what Ney can do individually.”

The Argentina idol did show that old club ties can fall by the wayside when national pride is at stake. Incensed by the rough treatment he received at the hands of Colombia throughout the match, he jeered ex-Barca colleague Yerry Mina mercilessly when the defender erred from the spot.

“Dance now, go on, dance now!” he yelled in reference to Mina's trademark celebration shimmy – a move that also seemed to be motivated by his solidarity with Suarez, whose Uruguay side lost out to Colombia in the previous round and were not impressed with his penalty-spot jig.

No such fireworks can be expected from Leo and Neymar, but neither will either player or any of their team-mates cede an inch in a game likely to involve intricate tricks and hard knocks in equal measure.

As Neymar told reporters ahead of the showdown, "Messi is, as I've always said, the best player I've ever seen play and he's a great friend, but now we're in a final, we're rivals. I want to win and I really want to win this title, which would be my first Copa America.

"Messi has been looking for his first title with the national team for many years, and every time we [Brazil] are not present at the tournament, I cheered for him. That's what I've been cheering for in the 2014 World Cup final, when he faced Germany.

"Now Brazil is in the dispute, so our friendship is on the line. The respect between us is still great but only one can win."

The stakes really could not be higher for either man. For Messi, that much-desired first Argentina title which will cement his place alongside Diego Maradona in the Albiceleste pantheon of idols.

For Neymar, who missed out in 2019 due to injury, the chance to prove once and for all that those comparisons with his great friend and mentor were justified all along. For both men, a huge boost in their quest for the Ballon d'Or – what would be the Brazilian's first – is additionally on offer.

And for South American football, not to mention neutrals across the world, the opportunity to finish with a flourish this Copa America, beset as it has been by Covid, organisational chaos, the lack of atmosphere in empty stadiums and refereeing controversy, with two genuine superstars putting on an unforgettable show.

Antoine Griezmann says he has "always been committed against any form of discrimination" following the release of videos that seem to show the Barcelona forward and team-mate Ousmane Dembele mocking Asian people.

The clips, which have surfaced on social media, are said to have been shot during the Blaugrana's pre-season in 2019. Dembele also features in the videos, with both men now addressing the furore.

What is said in the videos?
The first of two videos to have been circulated in recent days show France international colleagues Griezmann and Dembele in a hotel room. They appear to require the assistance of hotel staff with a television, with the pair seemingly struggling to get a games console to work that would allow them to play Pro Evolution Soccer.

Dembele is alleged to say of the three men providing technical support: "All these ugly faces, just so you can play PES, aren't you ashamed?" He then goes on to say: "What kind of backward language is that?" and "Are you technologically advanced in your country or not?"

Another video from the same tour sees Griezmann relaxing in a pool, with fellow countrymen Dembele and Samuel Umtiti in attendance. The 30-year-old is allegedly captured saying: "Ching chong."

How has Griezmann responded?
The World Cup winner has reacted to the accusations of racism by posting on Twitter: "I have always been committed against any form of discrimination.

"For the past few days, some people have wanted to pass me off as the man I am not. I firmly refute the accusations made against me and I am sorry if I offended my Japanese friends."

What did Dembele have to say?
The 24-year-old winger has also refuted any suggestion that his actions can be considered discriminatory.

He posted on Instagram: "The scene happens to be in Japan. It could have taken place anywhere on the planet, I would have used the same expressions.

"I sometimes use these kinds of expressions in private, with friends, regardless of their origin, but I can imagine that the video could have offended the people present in these images. Therefore, I offer them my most sincere apologies."

Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Pinnick has asked football agents to stop taking players from the country to unknown leagues in Europe. Instead, Pinnick, who also serves as a Fifa official, has promised to help players from the West African nation to join top clubs in major leagues in Europe giving examples of Villarreal, Valencia, and Lille.

The FA President was speaking while addressing home-based Super Eagles players in Los Angeles on Saturday night ahead of their friendly against Mexico.

The team suffered a 4-0 defeat during the friendly staged at the Los Angeles Coliseum, a double from Atletico Madrid star Hector Herrera and lone goals from Rogelio Funes Mori and Jonathan dos Santos steered El Tri to a comfortable victory as they wrapped up preparations for their 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup campaign which will begin on July 11.

“If you’re living in Nigeria, you’re going to a top club. Villarreal, Valencia, Lille, and all those proud footballing clubs and not to one mushroom club that you’re better off,” he said as quoted by Brila.net. With players eager to move to Europe, most NPFL players are known for making moves abroad in the name of seeking greener pastures but according to Pinnick, his administration will do everything possible to help them get top clubs.

“I want to expose you, people, to the highest levels so when you’re going to a foreign club, and we won’t allow any agent take you to countries like Cyprus, Belarus, etc., no, never we won’t allow it and I will make sure no transfer is issued on situations like that."

Sunday's result extended Mexico's dominance over Nigeria, and after six games, El Tri have now won three games and the West Africans remain winless after three outings ended in draws.

In the absence of Heartland goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Enyimba forward Anayo Iwuala was handed the armband and he led Gernot Rohr’s side for the entire 90 minutes while Lobi Stars’ Nwabili got the nod to stay in between the sticks ahead of Enyimba’s John Noble.

Unfortunately, the Super Eagles are winless in their last eight friendly matches and their last victory dates back to March 2019 when they edged Egypt 1-0 in Asaba. A humbling defeat at the hands of El Tri did little to make the case for the home-based contingent breaking into Gernot Rohr's main squad. There is no more polarizing discussion in Nigerian football than that surrounding the aptitude (or otherwise) of locally based players for the senior national team.

Like for most differences of opinion in this present day and age, the battleground is digital, and with this comes the unspeakable principle that seems to govern disagreement on the internet: no one learns anything, and no one shifts ground. No matter what. To yield ground is to lose face.

So it is that, whenever unfortunate events like Sunday morning’s 4-0 humbling of an NPFL selection by Mexico take place, it is rather predictably used as fodder for those who believe that little of note can come out of the Nigeria Professional Football League. To observe proceedings in Los Angeles was to bear witness to a brutal lesson, so total was the superiority the Mexican side enjoyed.

For this paddling though, the Nigerian side on the night were also kind enough to pull down their own slacks and expose their rear ends: missed passes, poor controls and laughable decision-making were the order of the day. With such willing cooperation, El Tri must have wondered at the utility of the exercise—while they are comfortably the top-ranked side in Concacaf, the opposition at the upcoming Gold Cup will not be quite so supine.

So, was this proof positive then that players of an NPFL extraction are not fit for purpose under any circumstance? Not quite.

Make no mistake, some of the errors bordered on puerile, and it was disturbing that the very best players the league can produce were made to look hapless under the hot lights. It should not be too much to expect at least a decent grasp of the basics. Even granting that though, any fair assessment must take into account the manner in which this team was assembled and prepared for their day out stateside.

This is a team ostensibly being put together for the purpose of prosecuting the African Nations Championship in early 2023. However, the training camp for Sunday’s engagement was the first time this group had convened, and their preparation was fraught from the start: frequent and often impromptu changes of training venue, as well as confusion over who precisely was supposed to be in charge of the entire rodeo.

The custodianship of the CHAN is usually the preserve of the Super Eagles assistant coach, but during the entire process Joseph Yobo was curiously absent. He would later surface on TV doing punditry for the ongoing European Championships, and there have been no explanations put forward as to what exactly is going on. (It is worth noting that Yobo does not, at this time, having the required coaching certifications to coach the side, which then brings us right back to the question that was raised at the time of his appointment: on what basis was he handed the role to begin with? But that’s a different matter entirely)

Instead, Paul Aigbogun and Austin Eguavoen, both officials of the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) held sway during the period of training in Abuja, culminating in the cringe-worthy intervention by the Minister of Sport Sunday Dare, who effectively ordered Gernot Rohr to take charge of the team on the eve of their travel. Against this backdrop of disarray, is it any surprise that the team mirrored the dysfunction of their administrators on the night?

This is not, of course, a treatise for the NPFL players to be imported wholesale into the main Super Eagles squad. That would be naïve in the extreme, and unrealistic to boot. If there is one thing both sides seem capable of agreeing on, it is that the talent within the local league (where it can be found) is essentially in a raw state, and needs a mix of exposure, competitive matches, work in training and patience in order to be ready for use at the top level.

As such, however one feels about essentially setting these lads up for a fall in the City of Angels, it is imperative that the NFF make scheduling these matches a point of duty. Perhaps be a little more careful with the matchmaking, and try not to treat the exercise as an afterthought. Rohr has been clear that, in order for any of the locally based players to stake a serious claim with the main Super Eagles, he must first of all be a standout performer at the CHAN. The logic may be a little less than watertight, but it is his requirement; rather than take him to task for not selecting players from the NPFL, it would make more sense to give those players the best avenue by which to catch his eye, and then hold him to his own criteria.
