Career / Work-life Balance by IRWNigeria: 9:59am On May 21, 2019
Work-life balance is not so difficult a concept to define and this is largely due to some unique reasons. Think about it, you would agree we need a sane mind to be able to function well and be productive at work. At the same time, we need to work hard and also work smart to be responsible to ourselves and others by earning a living and ultimately making an impact and not leaving the world the way we met it. Moving forward, we are honest enough to also admit that creating and maintaining a work-life balance is unique to every individual and does not come with a manual that is generally acceptable to every single person on the planet. However, we know we all have a goal in mind which is to keep the mind and the spirit together in one piece within a body. Or how else do we intend to continue to be a member of Planet Earth if we do not take into cognisance the effect a healthy and consistent work-life balance in its entirety will have on us? We are not forgetful to add that one of the essential truths of striking a work-life balance in this 21st century is by breaking normal conventions of doing what everybody is doing to combat stress. This is what we mean.

What works for Mr Cole Philips, an Estate manager in a consulting firm who resides in the South Western part of the Nation and travels to Dubai as part of his stress management plan may not work for Miss Ada Nwogbe, a Paediatrician residing in the North Eastern part of the country who engages the art of Yoga in dealing with stress. If you can be sincere with yourself, you can identify what works best for you and this leads us to stress management. Identify your stressor and deliberately develop ways to reduce them to the level where they would not lead to health problems. Stress has always been and will forever be an everyday encounter. Granted that there are various factors that instigate different levels of stress, we would still reiterate our opinion on the importance of stress management in maintaining a work-life balance. We are not careful to add that there is no ideal work life balance that will fit the scope of the needs of the whole world neither is there some kind of hard and fast rule.
How long do you intend to live if the total number of years is entirely up to you to decide(In a way, it is up to you actually)?
Here comes a moment of literary significance, Prioritizing is key in striking a balance between work and life. We believe it will not be tacky of us to advise that you deliberately prioritize to start a work -life balance plan and also make it a top priority to allow other areas of your life be lit meaning engaging in work-life balance plans would help you identify other areas of your life that probably were dormant or have always been in obscurity relative to other areas.Walk the talk, reduce the intake of potential substances, enrol in stress management classes, start a foundation or a charity program. As a matter of fact, this post is a shift from the usual concept of focusing on having just more fun which gives us a hint about the stress load at work which we know can be overwhelming. After having fun and expending energy, what’s left?

Let's break with conventions, shall we? A meaningful self journey at its best is the beginning of a work-life balance and by that we mean a deliberate purposeful individual who is enthusiastic about causing changes and setting embers on fire.

Business / Entrepreneurs!! Beat That Dark Side by IRWNigeria: 12:08pm On Apr 30, 2019
Dear Entrepreneur,

Last week, Dotun was at the verge of depression, because his business was not doing so good but then he got a job offer running into Millions of Naira (This was going to be his biggest sales so far). He bargained with the client but they reached a stalemate on pricing. If he agrees to all their terms and price, he will barely make 1% margin on the job. Despite the fact that he really needs it, he had to turn them down, that was the easy part. The hard part was living with that decision. He beat himself up to the verge of depression. Mercifully, Ope came to visit and they started to discuss about the struggles and challenges they face as entrepreneurs. Dotun shared his predicament, Ope laughed and told Dotun he had made the right decision citing many examples from his own experiences and those of others he knows.

Dotun started to feel the sun shine on his face again and then he received a call from the client saying they had changed their terms, “we found out that what we proposed won't work after working with another vendor.” He got the job though a smaller portion of it and it was still his biggest sales. There will be many dark times in your entrepreneurial journey, where it seems like the sun won’t come out, you must not give up but above all you must have a network of people who are in the same space, who have walked that path to help you through the journey before the morning comes. We humans are social beings, it is easier for us to go through things knowing that it is common to all.

Being part of a community is of the essence. A community of entrepreneurs where you can compare prices, share experiences, grow together, maximise each other's networks, and learn together and so on. It will save one both time and effort because you are employing the power of synergy. You will get things done faster within the community. You have to be deliberate in choosing this community, look for entrepreneurs who believe in the same thing you do, whose core values align with yours, who are in it for the long haul (There is no need starting if you are just there to see how it goes). You can build this support system by attending networking meeting, reaching out to them directly via any social media platform, attending events centered on entrepreneurship. You have to give value to the community, be an active part and the community will take care of you. There is no free lunch in Freetown, you must also be a person that gives value.

Dotun was saved from depression at that time because he confided in Ope, largely due to the fact that entrepreneurs do not bottle things up, rather they share it with a trusted member of the community, because it is in talking about it that will open your eyes to the solutions that abound.

Career / Generation Z!! Who Are They And What Do They Want? by IRWNigeria: 2:16pm On Apr 24, 2019
According to 'Pew Research Centre', the Generation Z are classified as those born between the year 1997-2020, so the oldest of them is at best 22 years old. The millennials are those born between the year 1981 to 1996 while generation X are those born between the year 1965-1980.
The generation X and the millennials make up a sizeable amount of today's workforce. The baby boomers and generation Z are also part of the workforce, but their numbers are not a sizeable quantity compared to the aforementioned.

Why then is there so much fuss about the Z generation? Probably because they are a non-conformist, they seem to defy some business processes that those who have been in the business world have not followed to achieve success yet they have achieved. We see thriving business owners at tender ages of 16. We see ideas that command resources that the generation X never dreamt of nor imagined materialising and becoming defining points for new business models. We see the rise of a new generation of people who are not afraid of change and who dare to be different. We see a group of young boys and girls rising to challenge status- quo, we see a group of young adults with some form of expertise and yet little or no experience. We see a team of people from different nations, continents, races in different colours who take no cognisance of their differences or boundaries but speak only one language drive ‘success.’ Daring to achieve the Imaginations of their heart.
We see a group of people who are fast and have a thought that time is running out on them and yet they are so young the oldest of them is only 22. The world is at their feet, this they know and they have what it takes to rise up to every challenge. Their minds operate in a way that dictates no limitation, that is, the world they were born into. Little wonder they seem to be achieving so much. If you would ask me, I think they are operating in a form that shows the creativity of God inside man. They seem to be:

Creating…………. Creative

Doing ……………. Can do spirit

Fearless……… Never afraid of change

Entrepreneurial…….. Nothing is impossible

Whilst the older generations (the generation X, baby boomers, silent generation) find it a bit difficult to understand them and more often than not in this part of the world we see them as being lazy. The millennials seem to be better off in understanding and appreciating them. The millennials were privileged to have witnessed the increasing change in technology and thus the difference is very clear to them.
As an organisation that is proactive, intuitive, visionary, has foresight, it is important, if narratives must be changed, growth achieved and relevance maintained and sustained, one cannot but pay some form of attention to this generation Z.
If products and services are not being considered or designed for them, then one may want to consider them as part of the input team. Whichever way we want to look at it, they are a part of the defining force of the market place and in an unspecified year to come, they will be the major force that defines the market place.

Generation Z is a fascinating group. They have quite a great number of many positive qualities and attributes that could potentially help create a better world for everyone. The game is changing and this is so evident. The same approach, design and marketing strategies just won’t work anymore. In order for your designs to succeed, it is imperative to learn who they are, what they want, and, most importantly, how to communicate it to them quickly and with impact. We can safely conclude that Generation Z is a huge group of highly diverse, multiracial people filled with a desire for altruism and driven by a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
The earlier we accept this group of emerging leaders and harness their best potentials to the benefit of all, the better our world will become.
Does this description fit the generation Z in this part of the world called Nigeria, Africa? Or do we just defy all known definitions? Time will tell.

Career / Creating An Enabling Environment by IRWNigeria: 3:15pm On Apr 16, 2019
”Employees are a company's greatest asset - they're your competitive advantage. You want to attract and retain the best; provide them with encouragement, stimulus, and make them feel that they are an integral part of the company's mission.” - Anne M. Mulcahy

In recent times, it has become a cliché amongst Organizations to say “Our employees are our most valuable assets”. However a lot of organizations only seem to be paying lip service to this because they want to be recognized as one of the organizations who have embraced this line of thought since it is world’s best practice but in real terms they are far away from recognizing their employees as their most valuable assets.

Whilst some organizations don’t intend to just pay lip service to this they are clueless as to how they can achieve it. It can be achieved by being deliberate in creating an enabling environment that shows clearly that Employees are their most valuable asset. An environment that allows employees to express their thoughts and concerns without fear of expression or victimization of any sort.

An employee who worked for over 13 years in a company was asked why he thinks he was laid off, he said “I guess because I made poor quality shoes but in the thirteen years not once was I allowed to express my thought on how I can get the job done better. Not once.” This is a great loss for both the employee and the organization.

What is an enabling environment?

An Enabling environment is one which encourages constant communication across board, which allows for employees to air their thoughts and opinions about how they can increase productivity. It is one which allow a degree of failure, knowing it is a step to success. Where everybody is treated with respect and dignity, it allows people take ownership of Organizational processes.

How to create an enabling environment
• Treat employees with respect.
• Put up proper reporting lines in place were needs and concerns can be shared and addressed.
• Processes are easy and free of any known or perceived bottle necks
• Value the opinion of employees
• Be value driven
• Give them a sense of meaning

Employees will experience more job satisfaction and engagement in an enabling environment which will ultimately increase profitability for the Organization. Organizations stay productive and relevant by created an enabling and supportive environment that fuel innovation and increases productivity.
