I actually checked to see what's the estimated number from the 75 nations, and it's like 46% of US visa applications(around 300k applications). Let's assume the average applications cost $340, you're looking at a revenue stream of around 100mil usd. For a nation that has close to 5 trillion yearly budget, trust me they've done their calculations and feasibility studies.

The war in Venezuela and the current easy flow of oil was both a security and economic move by Trump.

The US doesn't mind filling that gap with Asians who we both know are taken in a higher caste than us.

I wish as citizens, we can read the world this way and start getting competitive industrial wise so we command respect in such negotiations.
I just came across this

The rate at which pro-APC threads keep making Nairaland frontpage is becoming comical. I don't think threads created by opposition make frontpage at equal level. Nairaland needs to protect its perceived neutrality and not make it so obvious.

In History/Government . France used the policy of assimilation (total intake of colonised countries) while the UK used policy of association (temporary). That is why you see lots of blacks (from ivory coast, cotonou, Togo etc ) doing well in France and getting France visa for those colonies after independence is too easy.

United States being trying to do a new thing against the UK policy also adopted the policy of assimilation but it is now counterproductive because U.S is too big. In the history of United States after the abolition of slave trade they have wanted to welcome every citizens of the world.

To cut the story short, United States is confused because they have assimilated the wrong nations or people. In order word they are not fighting any nation other that how to eliminate the terrorists in totality and any nation that has Islam majority or strong influence will be affected.

Terrorists are hiding under islam while muslim or muslim dominated countries like Nigeria , Saudi Arabia , etc are helpless in fishing out these evil doers. Mind you Islam as a religion is a religion of peace and love.

Sorry, but this is a bit out of context. Mexicans trying to enter illegally via the borders are not Islam. Saudi Arabia has a strong relationship with the USA government - https://www.ibanet.org/article/4175aa70-90ed-4145-b1d7-3cc9a28ac013.

I'll guess moves like this are just to appease staunch supporters who are against immigration - legal/illegal they've always been saying the foreigners are stealing their jobs, now they want it.
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by isArray: 12:43pm On May 24
I think it's way more than 100mil, if you consider multiple applications from one applicant, Nigeria alone generates around ₦21 billon naira annually - that's appx 15mil USD, there is an indirect effect on flight operations too if the embassy is not issuing visas then there are less people flying the direct route, they might have calculated the feasibility as you've said, they might not really feel it.

Even first world countries are no longer finding it appealing, they would lose revenue from non-refundable visa fees tho, maybe not so significant but I am sure that also contributes to the VO's pay check, embassy operations, security e.t.c.
Colony7:
The whole western world is becoming selective. Truth be told, they stand nothing to lose if all the 75 countries currently blocked are denied entry into the US.

Trump made a statement earlier this year "Why can't we have people from Norway, Sweden, Denmark". The "far right " as the media tend to refer to conservatives all over the west these days are leaning towards selective migration. That's what made them have their kind of society today.

So yeah, many third world citizens will however not find the US appealing anytime soon

No. I disagree. You should have written that : The USA will be out of reach for a lot of people that is trying to move in illegally .

One of my childhood friends was shot dead in Chicago last week friday. He entered the U.S around 2018 or so. Imagine ? Go and watch the crime scene investigation on dstv or pawn shops and you will realised that a lot of subnormal people have entered into america either legally or illegally.

President Trump's current immigration policy is what even Barrack Obama will vote for because every americans does not know how to stop the illegal and legal influx of aliens into the USA.

No incoming or future president of the United States will reverse this policy. It is going to stay in order to accept only the absolutely vetted people into america.

United States ex leaders were too accessible and kind in the assimilation of strangers into their lands and culture but their kindness is now counterproductive.

President Trump is now laying the foundation to correct the anomaly .
Well, most of his ridiculous policies were reversed by Biden. I don't understand what you mean by being too accessible, you have to apply for a visa AFAIK and you could be approved or rejected, this is a student thread by the way, I am not sure anyone here is trying to move illegally, the latest policies directly affects legal migrants.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Will Grant ‘Adjustment of Status’ Only in Extraordinary Circumstances

Release Date
05/22/2026
WASHINGTON—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services today announced a new policy memo reiterating the fact that, consistent with long-standing immigration law and immigration court decisions, aliens seeking adjustment of status must do so through consular processing via the Department of State outside of the country. Officers are directed to consider all relevant factors and information on a case-by-case basis when determining whether an alien warrants this extraordinary form of relief.

“We’re returning to the original intent of the law to ensure aliens navigate our nation’s immigration system properly. From now on, an alien who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply, except in extraordinary circumstances. This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes. When aliens apply from their home country, it reduces the need to find and remove those who decide to slip into the shadows and remain in the U.S. illegally after being denied residency,” said USCIS Spokesman Zach Kahler.

“Nonimmigrants, like students, temporary workers, or people on tourist visas, come to the U.S. for a short time and for a specific purpose. Our system is designed for them to leave when their visit is over. Their visit should not function as the first step in the Green Card process. Following the law allows the majority of these cases to be handled by the State Department at U.S. consular offices abroad and frees up limited USCIS resources to focus on processing other cases that fall under its purview, including visas for victims of violent crime and human trafficking, naturalization applications, and other priorities. The law was written this way for a reason, and despite the fact that it has been ignored for years, following it will help make our system fairer and more efficient.”

Well, power has been in private hands since 2013, so what government needs to do is to let the power sector set their prices.

They haven't done that, so the power sector has been in a mess.
Yeah, the people needs to also put them on their toes
PoliticsRe: Power Outage Bites Harder by isArray: 11:30am On Mar 27
nairalanda1:
The reason why electricity is bad is because since the 1970's we haven't been paying a cost reflective tarrif for power, maybe since earlier. The result is massive losses in the power sector which prevents them from improving things.

Government subsides are also awful, and irregular, which makes things worse.

The Ivory coast used to have the same issues as we did around the time Fela was singing his song. Today they don't because their government implemented cost reflective tarrifs over the board in 1993. (And the leader was Henri Bedie, who was very corrupt and also a tribalist, even worse than your average Nigerian tribalist in power). Result power improved. Same thing for Ghana.

Ironically, all the money we pay for generators and fuelling them, and even solar, could have, if they were paid to the power sector, imprved things.

Yeah, government wanted to make things easier for the poor...but as you can see, the road to bad power supply is paved with good intentions.
People would find alternatives if the government refuse to do their job, that's where generators and solar come in, what are the good intentions if Aso rock is already planning solar installations? The people will feel it if the government is trying to make things easier, I can still remember struggling to get petrol at #65/L years ago 😅, I don't live in Nigeria anymore but I can't stomach dropping almost about #1400/L now

GEJ under whose government grid collapses were even far more than APC own self.

GEJ under whose regime, I had bad light in a whole FCT for months

GEJ who privatised power and then passed a law that stopped them from making profits (a law that tinubu and buhari have kept).

GEJ who did not even invest in transmisison (Buhari, as bad as he is, and he was bad, did at least get a deal with Siemens to improve the thing).

GEJ who ran a regime that was as corrupt as buhari, tinubu and all of those before them

GEJ Under whose regime that bombing and insecurity was a way of life.

I'm sure you go tell us all those problems were caused by the Fulanis to sabotage his regime.

LOL...and before you start, APC and tinubu were voted to change things, and as you can see they have made it worse. BUT LET US NOT LIE ABOUT WHY PEOPLE VOTED FOR APC IN 2015...bad government of PDP.
This is not even a PDP vs APC thing, if you listen to Fela track - "Just like that" he mentioned how the leaders built kainji dam and electricity became bad. Regardless of whichever party is in power, the impact of good governance will be felt by everyone same as the impact of bad governance. It's the political class vs common people at the of the day

Only God knows how much my business has lost this year due to epileptic power. I'm neither his friend nor his foe; but as far as electricity is concerned, Tinubu is a monumental failure.

Prior to his inauguration in 2023, I listed out some 3 core areas which I expect his government to perform - - Economy, Restructuring and Electricity. Unfortunately today, his scorecard in all these 3 areas is very low.

If you ask me if he deserves to be reelected again next year, my answer is NO!
Lack of electricity has been an issue in Nigeria for a very long time. If only the government will prioritise just that alone, but Nigerians are already used to that way of life and the government doesn't care
