Why is he still a pastor when his home is unstable

Don't the church members see his wife battered face for them to report to the church authority's for investigation and possibly reprimand the pastor

His first service should be at home and if the home isn't stable, how can he then Shepard the congregation

CrimeGunmen Kill Bricklayer Working To Pay For Father’s Treatment by Islie(op): 7:57am On Oct 01, 2015
Gun-wielding hoodlums on Tuesday unleashed terror on Daodu, Olokodana and Iya Agan streets on the Old Apapa Road in Lagos, during which they shot dead a 28-year-old bricklayer and injured other residents.

Our correspondent learnt that the bricklayer, identified simply as Wahab, who hailed from Ilorin, Kwara State, had come to the area to work and save money to pay for his ailing father’s treatment.

It was gathered that the gunmen, who struck at about 8pm in the area, shot Wahab in the neck and also robbed residents and passersby of their valuables.

It was also learnt that Wahab died instantly, while policemen from the Iponri division, who received a distress call, mobilised to apprehend the gunmen.

Our correspondent learnt that none of the fleeing gunmen was arrested, but the police recovered Wahab’s corpse, which had been deposited in a morgue.

When PUNCH Metro visited the streets on Wednesday, there was palpable tension as most houses and shops were locked. The few people sighted were not willing to talk about the attack.

A member of the vigilance group in the area, identified only as Ishola, however, told our correspondent that the gunmen were hoodlums from Fagbayimu, led by one John Ibafo. He added that the Fagbayimu gunmen came to attack Railway Line boys, led by Dagbe Ahmed.

He noted that Wahab was a victim of sporadic gunshots as he was not a member of either faction.

He said, “Wahab was not married. He lived in the Ibafo area of Ogun State, and sometimes came to Oyingbo to work. It was two days ago that he came again for some bricklaying work, and stayed with friends on Daodu Lane.

“The gunmen invaded the streets yesterday (Tuesday) at about 8pm in search of rival gang members. They also used the opportunity to rob passersby and residents. They were shooting sporadically to scare people. It was in the process that Wahab was shot in the neck. He had just finished eating dinner when he was shot.

“The friends he was staying with quickly called the vigilance group and the police that one of them had been killed by the rampaging gunmen. But by the time the police arrived, the gunmen had escaped.”

One of Wahab’s friends, identified only as Wale, who spoke on the telephone, said Wahab’s father was down with sickness in Ilorin, adding that the news of his son’s death would be a bigger blow.

He said, “He was working to get money to take to his ailing father for his treatment. His mother is late. The old man has been sick for several years, and it was Wahab who worked to finance his treatment. He would have travelled to his hometown today (Wednesday) had he not been killed.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the cult gangs also went on the rampage on Sallah day, and looted houses along the Railway Line, during which a policeman shot himself in the leg.

It was learnt that the officer, identified only as Ugor, who was attached to the Iponri Police Division, had been hospitalised since last Thursday.

Our correspondent gathered that about 10 persons sustained gunshot injuries and were being treated at some local health centres in the area. A source, who visited some of the injured persons, said none of them was willing to talk for fear of being traced.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, said the police removed Wahab’s corpse, noting that the injured officer was recuperating in the hospital.

He said, “The dead body was found when the police arrived at the scene. There was no exchange of fire as the hoodlums immediately fled the area.

“On the Sallah day incident, we were able to recover some ammunition abandoned by the fleeing cultists. Unfortunately, one of our men mistakenly shot himself in the leg during the operation. He is still recovering in a hospital I cannot disclose.”

CrimeRobbers Drown Inside Canal While Escaping With N13,000 (Graphic Pic) by Islie(op): 7:31am On Sep 30, 2015
Two robbery suspects have drowned inside a canal in the Ojota area of Lagos while they were escaping with a mobile phone and N13,000, snatched from their victim.

Our correspondent gathered that the deceased were part of a five-man gang, which had unleashed terror on the Olusosun, Ojota, area, before attacking the male victim, whose name had yet to be given, at about 8pm around the Olusosun dump.

It was learnt that a local vigilance group, however, apprehended two members of the gang, and handed them over to the Alausa Police Division, while three of the robbers escaped.

Our correspondent learnt that on Saturday, two corpses, suspected to be the fleeing robbers, were, however, found trapped inside the Olusosun canal around the dump.

When our correspondent visited the area, a construction worker, who gave his name as Saliu Ahmed, said officers of the Neighbourhood Watch gave the robbers a chase before two of them slipped into the canal.

He said, “It was a about 8pm on Thursday. I knew when officers of the Neighbourhood Watch at the Olusosun dump, gave the robbers a chase. They later got two of them and took them to the police at Alausa.

“The robbers had stolen one Nokia mobile phone and the sum of N13,000 from their victim around the dump. Three of the gang members escaped that evening. It was then surprising that on Saturday, at about 12pm, the alarm was raised that two bodies were trapped in the canal.

“When the officers came to examine them, it was discovered that the victims were two of the fleeing robbers who slipped and died in the canal. It was the police who later came to remove the corpses.”

Our correspondent learnt that the bodies had been deposited at a public morgue for autopsy.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, had yet to reply to a text message sent to his phone on the incident.

CrimeFather Kills Own Daughter In Bauchi With Rat Poison (Photo) by Islie(op): 4:24pm On Sep 29, 2015
“Jarelu killed Hajara with rat poison. I learnt that he met his uncle, who serves as a father to him,

The fate of 27 -year -old widow, Maryam Musa and mother of 13 -year –old Hajara Jarelu ,whose life was brutally cut short by her father, is worse than death, as life for her is in total jeopardy when she lost a breadwinner and a daughter.

When LEADERSHIP FRIDAY visited her residence, located at Wayan Makarfi in Bauchi Metropolis, Bauchi State, the sadness and bitterness on her face was so hard that one could hang a wet blanket on- she has lost faith in humanity. Left with four children to cater for, her only source of livelihood is an old grinding machine that she uses to make ends meet.

Narrating her ordeal, Maryam confirmed that her first encounter with love was with Jarelu Ahmed, who she met 14 years ago. Ahmed was a Muslim and she was a Christian. Because of her love for him, Maryam was willing and resolved to convert to Islam so they can marry without hitches.

While preparing to marry, they crave to know each other carnally overpowered both of them and before you know it Maryam had conceived.

The new development eventually led the two promising lovers to fall apart and before the pregnancy developed, they were not on speaking terms. It was in this condition that Maryam was delivered of a healthy baby girl over 13 years ago.

When Maryam realised Jarelu was not willing to settle with her, as he had abandoned her and the baby, she decided to marry another man and this marriage sucessfully prooduced four children.

However, sometimes last month, Maryam decided upon her guardian’s advice. to take her daughter, Hajara to her father’s family as according her; “a girl’s honour lies with her paternal family.” But something unusual and terrible occurred. Jarelu decided to kill his daughter, Hajara at his family home. Jarelu was said to have used rat poisoning to perform the dastardly act.

After killing her, he dug a grave and buried her in his room.Maryam said she had no idea why Jerelu killed his daughter in cold blood.

“I have no idea why he killed my daughter. You see, when Hajara died, she was aged 13 years. since I gave birth to her, he never bought anything for the baby and myself. Before the birth, we agreed that he will take care of everything but up till the time he was arrested, he never took responsibility of anything that had to do with her.”

“Before I conceived Hajara, I was a Christian. when we fell in love, Jarelu said he wants to convert me and I agreed. We dated for over a year and I got pregnant out of wedlock. Since I got pregnant with Hajara, he abandoned me. He was aware of the pregnancy and when I was delivered of the child, I told him and he came and he blessed her. He was even the one that named her Hajara. After that, he left and since then, he deserted us. We did not get marry to each other but 40 days after the birth of Hajara, I converted to Islam.

The bereaved mother told LEADERSHIP FRIDAY that her ex-lover killed her daughter in cold blood.

“Jarelu killed Hajara with rat poison. I learnt that he met his uncle, who serves as a father to him, Chief Imam of Bauchi Bala Baban Inna that he wants to take Hajara to the Emir’s palace to meet their relatives because they are related. His father consented and he came and told the Imam’s wife to get Hajara ready. She was together with other children in their section when her father called her and instead of taking her out of the house, he took her to his quarters.”

Maryam added that when they entered his room; “ he had already bought the rat poison. He lured her to his room and gave her tea laced with the rat poison. At first, she refused as she told him she had taken her breakfast. He told her he is her father and will not harm her. She accepted the tea and after 2 sips, she started writhing in pain and complaining of stomach pain. He locked the door and left. One of the children, who observed that Jarelu came out of his room without Hajara, went and told her mother what happened.”

She continued that; “ when the family interrogated him on her whereabouts, he refused to say anything and he was taken to the palace where the Emir ordered for his arrest until he disclose where he took her. It was when he as tortured that he revealed what he did. Already, he had dug a grave at the back of his room to bury her.

Since her demise, no one from his family has come to commiserate with us. This happened over a month ago and she stayed for only 2 days with them and now she is gone.”

Hajara’s death left a very big vacuum in her mother’s heart because she was her pillar and her strength.

“Anytime I remember Hajara’s death I am reduced to tears. Since her death, life has not been easy for me. We had been struggling together through thick and thin in my poverty, we try to make ends meet, we never begged from anybody. She just completed her primary school. I suffered since she was a baby and when she has started helping me, she was brutally taken away from me.”

“Hajara assisted me very well. everybody knows this. You have seen our house and you can see the abject poverty we are living in. Hajara was really helping me. She was working to earn some income for her secondary education. She was washing dishes and sweeping for people. I don’t have to swear to you, but she was to be paid N3,000 for the two months that she had worked. She told me she will do the work so that I can pay for her registration, her books and her uniform. The N3,000 was paid few days after her death.”

Maryam lamented that as a widow, she has no one to help her; “ I am a widow. My husband died 15 months ago and I have 4 children who are now orphans. I don’t know what drove him to commit this heinous crime against my daughter. I have not been myself since her death. Till date, I have not opened her bag, it is still as she left it I don’t even have the heart to open it, I know my God will fight for me. God will surely vindicate me. I loved my daughter so much, she was very vibrant, taller than myself and was already bustling with life and he just wasted her life.”

“This death is very painful and I will never forgive him for what he did to my daughter. I will not forgive him because he has cheated me but he has cheated only himself” she stated.

Maryam’s guardian, Mallam Garba Noma attributed the killing to Jarelu’s sense of shame considering that Hajara was born out of wedlock.

“I think he probably killed her because she was born out of wedlock, but even if she was illegitimate, why will he kill her when the girl is not in his custody? What was his business with her? He never provided for her needs. Jarelu as far as I am concerned, is an illiterate and doesn’t know the law because if he does, he wont have acted the way he did. if he says he will hide his deeds from the world, the world is already aware of his shameful act.”

“The Chief Imam is an upright man, he knows the law and I know he will stand on the side of justice? Since the sad incidence, the Imam has been very busy and when I met him, he said he will come but he has been busy. He knows we are bereaved but he is more disturbed. Since I know the Imam, even if a chicken enters that house, it will not be killed

not to talk of a human being.”

“This case is beyond us. We are poor people and whatever the law stipulates on this case, we will abide by it. I am calling on the relevant authorities to be fair and just in this case. They should be impartial so that this case can be a deterrent to others,”he said.

When contacted, the Chief Imam, who is the head of the family, said he will not comment on the case until investigations have been completed by the police.

The PPRO confirmed that the case is still under investigation.

CrimeLAWMA Official Arrested For Stealing Cables (Pictured) by Islie(op): 7:51am On Sep 28, 2015
The police in Lagos have arrested an official of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Ibrahim Alli, for allegedly vandalising and stealing the cables that supplied power to streetlights in the Opebi, Ikeja area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that 29-year-old Alli, said to be a member of a two-man syndicate, was arrested on Friday, September 25, in the area.

The police said the suspect works with LAWMA in the Onipanu area, while his accomplice, identified only as Yunusa, evaded arrest. They said a manhunt had been launched for him.

Our correspondent learnt that the police recovered items, including electrical cables, a shovel, a LAWMA identity card, and one wristwatch from the suspect.

Alli, from Adamawa State, in his statement to the police, confessed to the crime, adding that it was Yunusa who introduced the idea to him.

He added that he was usually given only N1,500 from the sale of the cables.

He said, “Yunusa and I went to Opebi in Lagos at about 12.30am to steal the cables. Yunusa is the one who sold the cables. I do not know the receiver. I only assisted him in taking the cables from the place. He gave me N1,500 after the sales.

“I work with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority at Onipanu. I am not contented with the money being paid to us. Yunusa was the one who led me to the crime.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, confirmed the arrest. He added that efforts were on to apprehend the fleeing member.

He said, “Policemen, who were on routine patrol in the area, sighted the two men vandalising the streetlight cables, which had left the entire community in darkness. One of the suspects was apprehended, while the second suspect escaped.”

PoliticsSENATE PRESIDENCY PDP Positions Mark, Ekweremadu, Akpabio by Islie(op): 6:56am On Sep 27, 2015
As speculations mount over the future of embattled Senate President Bukola Saraki, plots by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to supplant the majority All Progressives Congress (APC) and take over leadership of the senate are intensifying.

The Nation had reported a few days ago the PDP was plotting a sensational take-over of the upper chamber of the National Assembly in the event that Saraki is consumed by his ongoing trial by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

The party is mobilising its members in the Senate to ensure one of its own replaces Saraki if the presidency of the senate becomes vacant. With that as a goal, it is said to be seriously considering one of the trio of former Senate President David Mark, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, as possible candidates for the position. The Nation also learnt that the three senators are being supported by various groups within the party and the senate.

The opposition party’s calculation is that some APC senators, especially those in the pro-Saraki’s Likeminds group, may either defect to the PDP or work with the party to once again produce the president of the senate if Saraki is convicted by the CCT.

“The party hopes to win to its side some APC senators to vote for our candidate along with the PDP senators. This is based on our belief that many senators across party lines are unhappy with the ongoing trial of the Senate President and we all know where this is coming from,” a PDP senator told The Nation.

Reliable sources said a meeting of PDP senators and members of Saraki’s Likeminds has been schedule for tomorrow in Abuja to discuss recent developments within the upper chamber and decide how the pro-Saraki lawmakers will react.

“While I know we will be discussing how to stall any plan to remove Saraki from office, I am also aware that we will be talking about how to ensure that APC doesn’t take over the leadership of the senate even if Saraki has to go. Already we are positioning our men in readiness for another political battle on the floor of the senate. If Saraki is forced out, we will replace him with one of our own,” another source said.

The Nation learnt that those pushing the candidacy of Ekweremadu are of the opinion that being the current Deputy Senate President, it is only normal that he be supported by PDP senators and Saraki’s loyalists to emerge as the Senate President should the latter lose the battle to remain in office.

“Ekweremadu is the current Deputy Senate President. He has shown loyalty to his boss and he is a loyal party man too. Many of us are of the opinion that it is natural that he be supported by PDP senators and Saraki’s loyalists to emerge as the Senate President should the latter lose his position as a result of his ongoing trial.

“We have made this clear to the caucus and the party leadership and he is seriously being considered by all stakeholders as a good candidate for the job. Ekweremadu’s experience as a Deputy Senate President of many years is also a great advantage. He is well suited for the job and he is well loved by many of his colleagues,” our source said.

Another factor working in favour of Ekweremadu, The Nation learnt is the quest by the South East geo-political zone to be represented among the top political office holders in the land. “The fact that he is from the South East is another factor working for him. Many senators will reason with the need to give the zone some sense of representation in the current arrangement,” our source added.

For Akpabio, the possibility of replacing Saraki as the next Senate President is being pushed largely by those opposed to Ekweremadu’s emergence. He is also said to be enjoying the backing of former governors now in PDP and Likeminds senators.

“Akpabio is the choice of those opposed to Ekweremadu for one reason or the other. He is also the candidate of his fellow ex-governors who are in Saraki’s camp or in PDP senate caucus. Their desire to ensure Ekweremadu is stopped from becoming Senate President may split the camp of pro-Saraki lawmakers,” our source added.

Meanwhile, a third group is said to be rooting for the return of David Mark as the Senate President to forestall further friction between the pro-Ekweremadu and pro-Akpabio camps. According to reports, the former Senate President’s status as the unofficial leader of the party in the National Assembly largely informed the decision to draft him into the race.

“Senator Mark is the real leader of the PDP caucus in the National Assembly. So, many of us feel he is the best man to be returned to the position after Saraki. His choice will also end the dangerous rivalry between the other groups and ensure that we do not lose the contest should the need arise,” our source added.

PoliticsChinedu Nebo Backs Buhari’s Anti-graft War by Islie(op): 4:16pm On Sep 26, 2015
Awka – A former Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war, describing the menace as a “killer” that must be fought by all Nigerians.

Nebo expressed his support for the anti-graft war in the address he delivered at the 2015 International Conference of the Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Management Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Friday.

He lauded the economic reforms and developmental agenda being introduced by the Buhari-led administration.
Nebo, however, urged the president to focus his attention on the public sector financial management and the Treasury Single Account policy.
According to him, corruption is not the only socio-economic reform and development challenge in Nigeria, incompetence is another problem.
“When you put incompetent persons in positions, that is also corruption, because they cannot perform and they end up stealing the national wealth and resources”.

Nebo also charged professional accountants to help in salvaging the nation by ensuring probity, accountability and keeping of books in a way to abhor corruptions for economic sustainability and development.

However, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, charged accountants to teach the public how to create wealth and manage finances.

Ahaneku, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, described Nigeria as a country blessed with rich human and natural resources; a nation having all it takes to be the He, however, blamed the nation’s woos on corruption.

He further urged professional accountants to rise to the challenge of imparting the people with right knowledge.

Earlier, Dr Ngozi Ijeoma, the Head, Department of Accountancy of the university, said that the 2015 conference was designed to produce discoveries aimed at providing enduring solutions to numerous economic challenges.

She expressed optimism that the conference would come up with strategies and options for professional accountants to ensure sustainable socio-economic growth of the country.

According to her, the early economic reforms in Nigeria failed because of inconsistency and lack of implementation.
The conference is entitled: “The Challenges of Socio-Economic Reforms and Development in Nigeria: The Role of Professional Accountants”.

A 13-year-old primary school pupil has been confirmed dead, while 20 others are battling for life in different hospitals in Enugu-Ezike in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, after eating at a traditional marriage ceremony last weekend.

Trouble started after the traditional marriage of Obiageli (surname witheld) when her in-laws departed to their hometown, Nrobo in Nsukka Council area. About 30 people, who ate the soup prepared for the entertainment of guests, were said to have started complaining of serious stomach upset.
Things got worse around 3 am, when many guests began stooling and vomiting blood, causing pandemonium among the villagers.

The girl, who was at the wedding, reportedly gave up the ghost before medical assistance could be sought, while others were rushed to different hospitals in Aji and Ogrute communities.
One of the in-laws to the family of the newly married woman, Emmanuel Odo nwa Urama a.k.a Ite ego, who narrated what happened to Daily Sun, stated that contrary to the earlier report that six people died after taking pork served in the home of the celebrant, only one person has been confirmed dead. He stated that he also ate the pork without any sign of trouble.

Odo, however, stated that three of his children who ate the soup were affected, adding that there was strong suspicion that the soup was poisoned.
He confirmed that the bride, Obiageli, returned from her husband’s home the next morning with swollen legs and other complications, but her situation was being handled with traditional and orthodox medicines.

According to him, the bride’s family has vowed to get to the root of the matter by any possible means so as to ascertain what actually happened.
Other victims who were said to be recovering in the hospital included uncle of the newly married girl, Anthony, his wife, Ijeoma and children.

Family2 Children Burn To Death At Osun Fuel Station (Picture) by Islie(op): 7:24am On Sep 24, 2015
There was pandemonium in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday, as two kids of the same mother were burnt to death when Bovas Filling Station in front of Osogbo Grammar School, went up in flames.

It was gathered that the victims were children of the owner of the filling station.

The mother of the kids was also said to have suffered burns in the process of trying to rescue them.

Although she was said to have succeeded in rescuing one, she lost the two kids to the mysterious fire.

The remains of the kids were said to have been deposited at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Mortuary, while their mum was taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the woman and her three children were inside the mini market attached to the filling station when the fire started. The woman was said to have escaped with one of the kids, but the other two kids were burnt alive.

One of the eyewitnesses said the two kids dodged beside a refrigerator inside the supermarket, but they were killed when the fire gutted the fridge and the compressor exploded.

The witness, Williams Ojo, said firefighters arrived at the scene late, saying that was why the fire was able to cause so much damage.

Ojo said the fire could have been caused by a spark from the refrigerator. He added that the damage had already been done before the arrival of the firefighters.

The Director of the Osun State Fire Service, Mr. Michael Ogundipe, confirmed the deaths.

He said, “Two lives were lost in the fire. We have not detected the cause of the fire. We responded immediately we were called. We sent two vehicles. We have equipment, but there was congestion on the road, which slowed down their movement.

“We met the fire burning, but I observed that the construction of the building did not follow the guideline. There was no exit route. No fire extinguisher was there. They would have been able to battle the fire if they had extinguishers.”

Firefighters were struggling to put off the fire which also destroyed a Toyota Corolla as of the time of filing this report.

Some sympathisers who spoke to our correspondent at the scene said the owner of the station was one of the honest petroleum marketers in the state, saying he never sold beyond the government approved price of N87 per litre even at the height of the fuel crisis.

Some motorists, who corroborated this, called on security agencies to carry out proper investigation to know the cause of the inferno.

CrimeHow Evil Lady Kidnapped Sister’s 3 Kids, Sold 2 (pictured) by Islie(op): 7:27am On Sep 23, 2015
By MOLLY KILETE

The Police Headquarters in Abuja recently paraded one Faith Nuhu and five others who specialised in child kidnapping and sale of children.

The suspects, among them, a medical doctor, were arrested after Faith Nuhu, kidnapped three of her sister’s children but ended up selling two of them at N600,000 to one Evelyn Ojiaku, who operates an illegal maternity home at Owerri, Imo State.

The kidnapped children, Grace Musa Idris, aged 13, Philip Musa Idris, 3, and Paul Musa Idris, were allegedly kidnapped by Faith from their home in Kafachan, Kaduna State on the pretext of going to buy them biscuits.

Faith who is an aunt to the children was said to have immediately taken the children to the motor park, where she boarded a vehicle to Owerri.

But on the way, she dumped the eldest of the children, Grace, who they felt was too old and intelligent to understand when things go wrong along the Abuja-Jos highway and continued with the two other children Philip and Paul.

However, help came the way of the young girl after some motorists, who saw her wandering stopped asked her what she was doing alone on the busy road.

After narrating her story, they gave her lift and reported the matter to the nearest police station, where policemen on duty made contacted with her parents who in turn showed up to pick her up.

The suspect was later arrested through police analytical tracking system. After her arrest, the suspect confessed to the police that she was not alone in the kidnap business and led the police to other members of her gang in Edo and Imo state.

Other members of the gang include Chigozie Goodwill, Mrs. Evelyn Ojiaku, John Ojiaku, Elizabeth Onyemaobi, and Dr. Amadi Godwin Uzoma.
When the suspects were paraded before newsmen at the Force headquarters Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer said one of the suspects, Evelyn Ojiaku operates a private hospital, Royal Maternity/Clinic and child service around the Umuyi Akaba Ikeduru, off Kilometer 6, Owerri-Okigwe, road and also engages in sale of children.

The police also revealed that the woman had earlier bought a day old baby belonging to Faith Nuhu, for N100,000 and that she operates her illegal maternity home with the connivance with one of her sons, John Ojiaku.

EducationPupils Still Sit On Bare Floor To Learn At Schools In Delta (photo) by Islie(op): 5:27pm On Sep 22, 2015
*Delta lawmaker, Izeze laments shocking findings in constituency
*No healthcare, electricity, access roads to 17 riverside villages
*Abandoned projects everywhere in 27 upland communities; Coastal erosion submerges settlement
*Pupils sit on bare floor to learn at schools in riverine communities

By Emma Amaize
UGHELLI — MEMBER of the Delta State House of Assembly representing Ughelli South Constituency, Hon Reuben Izeze, is bewildered that Primary School pupils at Omosuomo and Ekameta, two riverside communities in his area, still sit on bare floor to study without desks.

Hon Izeze, who undertook a tour of the communities to appraise their needs, said what he observed during the visit staggered him.
My devastating experience
He said, “From what I saw in the course of my tour of the 69 communities that make up my constituency, I can confirm to you that Ughelli South is indeed one of the most backward local government areas in Delta state in terms of infrastructural development.”

His words, “My most traumatizing experience was when I saw kids learning in classrooms with no desks and sitting on bare floor at Omosuomo and Ekameta communities, I wept.” “About 17 communities (Ewu) are riverine with no access roads, electricity or healthcare facilities. 27 other communities in the upland area (Ughievwen) are littered with abandoned/uncompleted road projects and poor education facilities,” he asserted.

Hon Izeze added, “Also at Otitiri/Iwhre-Ogun, a part of the community had been completely submerged by coastal erosion and clearly, it has gone extinct.” He bemoaned: “To get to some of the riverside Ewu communities in my constituency, which is Ughelli South, you have to pass other local government areas, Burutu and Bomadi, this is irritating as it is burdensome to my people.”

“I also found that there are major communities in the Jeremi area that are not accessible during the rains because of lack of roads and bridges. This is besides the decay in infrastructure and dearth of personnel in the basic education sector,” he further lamented.

Laughable facilities
The lawmaker said there was lack of primary health providers in most of the communities he visited and inadequacy of equipment and staff in the few existing Primary Health Centres, PHCS, pointing out that only one inadequately equipped and staffed General Hospital cannot serve the entire constituency.

He said that practically all the existing water schemes in the local government were not functional, while government have not connected the riverside communities, also threatened by coastal erosion, to the national grid.

Compendium of findings
The worried Hon Izeze, however, said, “We have been able to prepare a compendium of all our findings and gotten experts to cost the challenges we identified. It is our intention to present this to the present government of the state with a view to getting these issues addressed as the finances of the state improve.”

“Also we intend to reach out to other states and federal intervention agencies with some of these challenges in our bid to use a multi-dimensional approach to solving the developmental needs of our people. “Non-governmental Organizations, NGOS and private sector operators will also not be left out as we seek to address these litanies of challenges as we believe that government alone cannot do it all,” he asserted.

Premeditated goals
He said that part of our strategic objectives is to effectively connect all communities in the local government to the national grid by 2019, provide 16 transformers for 13 communities, complete ongoing electricity projects in Gbaregolor and extension to five other communities, as well as provide approximately 350 solar streetlights in 23 communities.

Izeze is advocating provision of equipment for the 30 existing primary health care centres in the local government, upgrade of general hospital, Otu-Jeremi; back-up of Ewu cottage hospital to a general hospital; rehabilitation of Oginibo PHC; completion/equipping of four PHCS; new cottage hospitals at Ovwor and Ofrukama; and floating hospitals to serve the riverine communities.
He also said the existing water schemes in 29 communities across the local government should be rehabilitated, new water schemes provided in three communities, as well as rehabilitation and equipping of 17 existing primary schools in the constituency.

His list of requests also include establishment of four new secondary schools, Technical College at Agbon, construction and equipping of DESOMATEC campus at Gbaregolor, tertiary institution in the area, construction of foreshore walls and embankment in five communities, dredging of two major rivers, construction of culverts in four communities among others.
