Education › DELSU Finds ‘exam Expo’ In Student’s Private Part by Islie(op): 8:19am On Aug 31, 2015 |
NO fewer than six female students, one of them a final year student of the Department of Library and Information Science, Delta State University, Abraka, were last Friday caught with “expo materials” during examination.
An examiner identified as Sylvester Okiemute caught a final year female student of the Department of Library and Information Science with incriminating materials during an examination.
Sources said the student was caught while sitting for an exam on ‘Entrepreneurship and Information Services’ who had been observing her suspicious moves.
It was gathered that the examiner, convinced that the student was making reference to a paper he smuggled in, asked her to hand over the paper. The girl denied and that led to a shouting match between the examiner and the student. It was gathered that the examiner dipped his hands into her private part recovered the incriminating materials.
Our source, who narrated the incident on condition of anonymity, said the
student was earlier caught by another examiner and she pleaded with the examiner, who later pardoned her.
She was reportedly given another booklet to start over again, but was caught again, 45 minutes later.
Confirming the incident, the university Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Victor Peretomode, said the university had declared total war on illegality and examination malpractices.
Peretomode warned that any student, no matter how highly placed, found to be involved in examination malpractices would be shown the way out. http://www.punchng.com/city-news-feature/delsu-finds-exam-expo-in-students-private-part/lalasticlala

He said he told Buhari that his image and members of his cabinet were being dragged in the mud. He said even in law, an accused person is deemed innocent until proven guilty. “Jonathan also said he asked Buhari to leave the Election Petition Tribunals in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states to do their work instead of the hounding of some INEC officials and politicians by DSS.” Am sure because he left them to do their work as you did adviced that's why the came about the forensic manipulation of the result of the governorship election where none human did cast almost 90% of the vote that was investigated Thanks for that advice on that |

Politics › Politicians, Electoral Staff Overrun INEC Strong Room In Delta by Islie(op): 5:17pm On Aug 30, 2015 |
* Steal 117 Governorship, 20 House of Assembly elections’ result sheets *How police arrested suspects in Asaba hotelBy Emma Amaize ASABA- Police in Delta State have burst a syndicate of politicians and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, who broke into the Commission’s strong room in Asaba and stole original copies of 137 result sheets used for the last Governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.
The police recovered 47 completed copies of original result sheets, otherwise known as Form EC8A for the governorship election held in parts of Warri South and 16 completed copies of original result sheets, otherwise known as form EC8A (1) for House of Assembly held in parts of Warri South from the suspects. Detectives also recovered were seven completed copies of original result sheets, otherwise known as Form EC8 for governorship election held in parts of Ugheli North; five completed copies of original result sheet , otherwise known as Form EC8A(1) for House of Assembly election held in Ugheli North. Other items recovered were one copy of original form EC8B(1) for summary of results from polling units in Warri South, 149 original copies of polling unit material receipt forms, otherwise known as form EC25B and 139 copies of forged forms EC25B among others. A reliable source hinted, weekend, that the police would soon arraign the suspects, including the chairman and top official of one of the political parties in the state in court for conspiracy to steal, forgery and receiving of stolen INEC property. Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Hafix M. Inuwa, in a report, reference number, CR3000/DTS/SD3/VOL/3/230, dated June 25, said acting on a tip- off, detectives swooped on a popular hotel in Asaba , where they arrested the politicians.
According to the report, addressed to the Commissioner of Police, “The recovered and identified result sheets are sensitive materials that should not be found outside the custody of INEC or officials of INEC…” The report suggested that whoever stole the result sheet “is the person that stands to gain advantage at the Electoral Petition Tribunal if INEC could not produce the result sheets when the tribunal demands for it.” The report indicated that two staff of INEC allegedly connived with the agents of the Labour Party were interrogated.
“Following the discovery of these exhibits, INEC did a stock taking of its strong room and discovered that a total of 117 results sheets for governorship election and 20 House of Assembly elections are missing from their strong room,” the report added. Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu, told Vanguard when contacted, yesterday, that INEC wrote a petition to the police over the matter and police and two INEC staff and an official of the Labour Party would be charge to court over the theft. She said some of the suspects had been at large, refusing to honour police invitations, but the police would continue manhunt for them, adding that it was wrong for officials of a political party and INEC officials to collude and remove INEC materials from its strong room http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/politicians-electoral-staffs-overrun-inec-strong-room-in-delta/ |
Family › 28 Year Old Mother Dumps New Born Baby In A Nylon Bag On The Street (photo) by Islie(op): 1:13pm On Aug 30, 2015 |
According to Mr and Mrs Osarhiakhi Ebohon, on June 13, 2015, a baby was dumped at Obazuaye Street in Evbuareke Quarters, Uselu, Benin City, at about 11am. Residents saw a newborn baby wrapped in a black nylon bag. The Ebohons, among other residents, placed curses on whoever might have thrown the child away.
The police was invited to take away the baby who was later sent to the Ministry of Women Affairs in Edo State.
That night, Mrs. Ebohon observed that their oldest daughter, Joy, was acting different, so she tried to find out what her daughter’s problem was, to no avail.
So she told the husband to probe Joy to know what the problem was.
At about 5am the following day, Mr Ebohon woke Joy up and forcibly asked her to tell him the cause of her unease. Joy then opened up to her parents that she was the one who dumped the child on the street. Her angry father went to the police to report the matter.
Mr Ebohon then handed over the daughter to the police for prosecution.
She was arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Benin by the police on June 17 and was remanded in Oko prisons pending advice from the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) on the matter.
Now, Mr and Mrs Ebohon are appealing for the release of the daughter whose first son is barely two years old. Narrating the incident, Ebohon, a farmer, said: “I decided to go to the village to farm because of the difficulty to get money to train my children. My daughter, Osarhiakhi Joy, in jail now, left secondary school some years back. She is my eldest daughter and she is 28 years old. About five years ago, she wrote her SSCE and passed all her papers and got admission into the College of Education, Ekiadolor, but I couldn’t pay the fees. I begged her to be patient till some other time. Before I knew it, she became pregnant. I called the boy responsible and told him that I didn’t want any stupid act and asked if he was going to marry her and he said yes. Then I told him the condition that my daughter wanted to further her education by studying pharmacy and he said okay. So she gave birth to the first child, a boy, who is about two years now. After that, she told me she couldn’t be staying at home, that she wanted to learn a trade before gaining admission and pending when the husband, or myself would be financially okay to send her back to school. I said it was okay. That is how she started learning fashion designing. She told her husband to come and beg me so that, at times, she could be staying with me because her place of work is closer to us and they don’t have their personal house. That is how she stated living with us again. I never knew she was pregnant this second time because I don’t stay in Benin; even the mother that stays in Benin never knew about it. I didn’t know she will be this clever to cover-up without our notice. “On June13, I came to Benin from the village to relax. I discovered people were shouting that they discovered a baby very close to my compound. I never had the belief that it was my daughter who gave birth to the baby. I was taking my siesta that afternoon when I woke up and ran to the place and I had been hearing the cry of a little baby thinking it was the next compound. I and my wife were among the first person to place curse on the culprit. I was the same person who organized to go call the police that what the person did was bad.
“The next day when I was ready to go back to the village, my wife called me to say I should ask our daughter that the way she was looking at her, there were changes in her. Then I called my daughter at about 5 am and told her to tell me the truth so that I could help her. That was when she told me that she was the one, I was about to collapse but as a man I controlled myself and asked her who was responsible for the pregnancy. She said it was the husband though they are not married. When I asked her why she behaved that way, she said when she told her husband about the pregnancy, he told her to go and abort it. She said she wanted to tell me but didn’t know what confused her. I was annoyed and took her hand to the chief security officer in my street to arrest her and let her suffer for what she has done so that others will learn from her. Then I took my bag and left for the village because I was having an appointment that morning with some people that are going to work in my farm. “The same day, they called the police and handed her over to them. She was detained at Textile Mill Police Station with her mother. When I heard about it, I didn’t care because what she did, I was not happy with it. Since then she has been in custody. It was later I heard that she was remanded in Oko prisons after the Evboriaria Magistrate Court said it was not in the position to handle the case as it is within the jurisdiction of the High Court. So they sent the file to the DPP. I said I wouldn’t be part of the case but it was later that people were begging me to realize that my daughter is not a wayward child; that something must have happened. Maybe the way the husband threatened her must have made her do it and she knows I don’t tolerate nonsense because I told her to be very careful as marriage is for better for worse. Then I called the husband and asked if he was responsible for the baby, and he said no. I called the two sisters of the man and told them to ask their brother if he is the one. They started saying that their brother was not the father of the child, that he was ready to go anywhere for a test, that even the first child, he was not sure if he is the father, that he had to do a test before he could accept him. In fact the boy said we should go to Ayelala (native doctor) to find out that he was not the father of the child. Now I have so much pity for my daughter who already has a two-year-old son with us. I want her released. I had to act the way I did because what she did was bad. But I have realized that my daughter has learnt from her mistakes. We are going to take care of the child. People should realize that I am not a bad person; if I am, I would not have informed the police to arrest her. The child is at the orphanage home now. We will accept the baby if my daughter is released. I am begging the authorities”. Asked if she was not aware that her daughter was pregnant, Mrs Ebohon said, “ I was not aware of the pregnancy and I don’t know how she kept the pregnancy that I was not aware. The first one, I was the one that detected it but this one she hid it from me. She told me that the husband is the cause of everything because she wanted to go to school when she got admission into the college of education. Because we didn’t have money, she couldn’t go to school, that is how the boy hooked her. After the father informed the police, they came to arrest us and took statement from me and her; fromTextile Mill Police Station, she was taken to Esigie Police Station. She was there for some weeks and I have been going to see her and people were saying it was not her fault; she even said it was the husband who frustrated her that she had to hid it from us. Though we were annoyed of what she did, people were begging us to pardon her that it is not her fault since she she was not able to take care of the first one. In fact she had that baby on June 13 but the child was discovered on June 16. When we even went to the Ministry of Women Affairs to see the child, they said they will not allow us to see her. My daughter is in prison now crying and begging God to forgive her, and release her to unite with her baby. She insists on going back to school if the opportunity comes”. It was a pitiable sight when Sunday Vanguard, in the company of her parents, visited Joy at Oko prisons; she wept uncontrollably when she saw her son. Asked why she decided to throw away the child, she narrated: “I was frustrated because my husband threatened that if I didn’t remove the pregnancy, he will not accept it. And I was afraid of telling my parents because my father will not take it lightly with me. What happened was that I went to the toilet to have my bath. As I was bathing, I entered into labour, the child came out smoothly. I was confused on what to do. I got a nylon bag around, quickly poured water on my body to clean up the blood. I rushed out of the bedroom, walked down the street and quietly dropped the child on the ground and came back home”. Asked how she felt when people were placing curses on her, she said: “I was feeling very bitter inside me. I wept without people knowing why I was crying. It was because of my condition that my mother started suspecting me. I was scared on what to do because my father will not be happy with me that my husband rejected the baby, while my husband warned me he will not accept the child if I kept it. And I didn’t really want to abort the baby. I have prayed God to forgive me, people should forgive and allow me go and take care of my baby. Poverty caused this problem for me, if not I would not have met this man. But God will judge him for rejecting this child that is his blood”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/our-daughter-dumped-day-old-baby-on-the-street-couple/

Politics › Hope Uzodinma's Second Marriage Plan Crumbles, Wife Asks Church To Stop Wedding by Islie(op): 3:43pm On Aug 29, 2015 |
Mrs Augusta Uzodinma, wife of Senator Hope Uzodinma from Imo State, has raised an alarm over her husband’s plan to get married to another woman in the Catholic Church and asked the Church and all concerned in the new marriage arrangement to indefinitely call off the plans , stressing that she is still legally married to the Senator.
She made this known to LEADERSHIP Weekend during her visit to the corporate Headquarters of LEADERSHIP Group in Abuja yesterday, alleging that the ban of the marriage has been sent to the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja.
According to her, she was legitimately married to Uzodimma (now a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) and has consummated their union both in court and in the Catholic Church.
She said they “got married when Uzodinma had nothing, let alone people hearing about him as is the case today”, and have had five children together, until 1996 when he asked her to go back to her parents that he was going to travel down to have some issues cleared with them.
She said, “At a certain point in time I discovered that my husband, began to behave strangely towards me, and I asked him severally in private why he became changed all of a sudden, he said he was still the person I used to know, that there was no problem. Then I learnt to keep my peace, only for my husband to accuse me of changing, saying the thought of seeing me around him was a threat to his life”.
“I was confused because I Knew I loved him with all my heart and could not have become a different person to him after several years of marriage that produced five kids. But he insisted that I left and, out of fear for my own life, I had to leave. I have been waiting all this while for him to come to my family so we can settle our differences for me to go back to my marital home but he never did, and we have not divorced. He has kept our five children and prevented them from seeing me all this while and told them I am late while I am alive. He is my only husband. I still love him till tomorrow in spite of my detention at one time by the police and all that I suffered at his instance over time. How can the same Catholic Church, which I know abhors polygamy to the latter, wed him and another woman when our marriage is still valid?”
According to the documents presented to LEADERSHIP Weekend by Mrs Uzodinma, the church marriage between her and her husband was performed by Rev. Fr N. C. Onwujiariri at the Maria Assumpta Cathedral Parish, Owerri and signed by the administrator, on 12th April, 1993, while the court’s own was signed at Marriage Registry in Lagos on the 5th day of June, 1996.
Mrs Uzodinma said all she wants is to reunite with her family and appeals to the Church and all who care to empathise with her to ensure that the planned second wedding of her husband does not hold.
When the marriage counsellor of Holy Trinity, Maitama was contacted he acknowledged receipt of the marriage ban letter from the parish in Sen. Uzodinma’s home town in Imo State and the objection raised by his wife. He said they will play by the rule of the Church by sending back the same letter with a note that an objection has been raised for proper investigation to be carried out.
All efforts made to get Sen. Uzodinma’s account via text messages and calls, some of which went through severally, yielded no positive result at the time of going to press. http://www.leadership.ng/news/457023/senators-second-marriage-plan-crumbles-as-wife-asks-church-to-stop-wedding |

Celebrities › I Will Get Married Soon – RUKKY SANDA by Islie(op): 3:47am On Aug 29, 2015 |
By Tofarati Ige With 17 films produced by her in 10 years, it is obvious that Nollywood’s Rukky Sanda is not a rookie as far as movie production is concerned. Though there’s no data to prove this, she also says she’s the first Nollywood actress to produce her own movies, which she started in 2005.
The fair-skinned beauty has however decided to go dark in her latest movie, ‘Dark’ which was premiered on Friday, August 28, 2015 at the Silverbird Cinemas, Victoria Island, Lagos. With her fingers in a lot of pies, Rukky says she has multiple personalities that take care of all her businesses.
Hear her, ‘I’m an interior designer, scriptwriter, actress, director and producer, and I’ve been doing this for about 10 years now. I think I’m just different at different times. It’s a blessing actually. I love writing and listening to stories. I also love being involved in every aspect of my movies; I can edit and do a couple of other things. I don’t like being ignorant about any part of movie production.’ She veered into movie production after appearing in only three movies, and we wanted to know why. She answers, ‘For me, it was more of a business decision, because at that time, it wasn’t like actresses were being paid well. I’ve always been a business person, and I wanted to invest in the business aspect of Nollywood. I acted in my first movie in 2004, and I produced my first film in 2005.’
But did she actually make money from that movie? She smiles wryly in response, ‘As a matter of fact, I still have people owing me till date. Some of the people I worked with even went behind my back to mass dub and sell the movies.’ On the lessons she has learnt, she talks like someone who has walked through the valley of the shadow of death and survived. With a bold face she says, ‘In the beginning, it was more of a business decision to just make money, but now, I’ve grown into it, and I actually have a passion for the art of movie production; I just want to make a difference with my movies. Then, I had very little knowledge about production, but now, I’m more of a professional.’
Many would believe that she had a rich family member somewhere who ‘dashed’ her the money she used in producing her first movie, considering her inexperience at the time. She doesn’t agree with that assertion, and she wastes no time in countering it. In her words, ‘Before I got into Nollywood, I was already doing business.
I used to sell stuff, so I had my money to put into it, and my mum supported me with a loan. She collected her money back though, so there was no sentiment attached. I won’t say it was easy starting out because I spent about N3m in making my first movie, and that was quite a lot in 2005. I don’t actually get Executive Producers for my movies; I do that myself. Not like I don’t believe in going all out to source for funds, but it’s just not my thing. I had someone once who wanted to sponsor my movie, and we did that. But before the movie came out, they were already on my neck asking for their money. I had to return it to them after we finished filming; we had not even finished editing then. I told them I’ll give them their money back, but that they wouldn’t get any credit on the movie. Ever since, I only produce movies if it’s convenient for me.’
So we wouldn’t think she’s just guess-working her way to the top, she informs us that she has taken a directing course in Houston, USA, as well as a Visual Effects course, but she’s also quick to add that she’s still learning every day. The tattoo-loving actress is known to be blunt and she speaks about that side of herself: ‘I believe in expressing myself; always stating my point, and sticking to what I believe in. People may read different meanings to it, but at the end of the day, I can only be myself; I can’t try to be someone else, or back-up what I don’t believe in. I wasn’t brought up like that. It has brought me here so far, and I love me.’
But has being blunt ever got her into trouble? She enthuses, ‘I don’t get into trouble. If I say anything anywhere, I will stand by it. I’m not the kind of girl who believes in gossip, or idle chatter. If I have anything to say, I say it and move on. If you have any problem with it, come and tell me.’
On reports that she once claimed to be half-Ghanaian, Rukky sets the records straight. ‘I think that was when I went to Ghana for the first time, and I was with some colleagues. We were just messing around and I think Yvonne Nelson told me something in Ghana that could be translated to what I tweeted at the time. It wasn’t anything serious; I don’t know why people take little things serious.’
On her new movie, Dark, she talks about it like a mother whose child is going to school for the first time; the excitement is palpable. ‘It’s extremely different from the regular movies we see out there. It’s about a woman who lost her baby during childbirth, and she actually believed it was the fault of the doctor, so she planned to kill the doctor’s child in return. Usually, I always call everybody I want to feature in my movies before I start writing, so I try to think about how they fit into the roles. When I had the idea for this movie, I thought about Van Vicker, and I told him that I wanted to write a movie for him, and I also asked if he would be free to shoot at a certain time. He was like it’s different, and that he was ready to do it. I love to write romantic movies.
That is empowering to women, and generally makes women happy, but Dark is a very serious movie; a lot was involved. It’s about family, pain, and a mother’s bond to her child. It sounds the same, but it’s different because it has a twist to it.’
She speaks more on the cast and their shared experience while on set, ‘Monalisa Chinda played the Doctor, while Van Vicker was her husband. I acted as the obsessed woman which is something I’ve never done before. I also had two buff cops in the persons of Bolanle Ninolowo and IK Ogbonna. There was also this amazing new child actor called Demarion Young who played Van’s son. It really took us a long time to get the perfect child for the movie, because we don’t have a lot of child actors in Nigeria. We held several auditions before we could get the perfect person.
The boy is so good, and he delivered his lines perfectly. He also looks so much like Van that I had to ask Van if he doesn’t have any child in Nigeria. My set is always fun and lively, and we needed it to be that way on this particular movie because the film is so serious. I had the best cast obviously.’
Dwelling on her sense of fashion, Rukky says she can never be caught wearing anything that doesn’t look good on her. She further defines fashion thus, ‘It means expressing yourself, and being comfortable in your own skin. I can never leave home without my sunglasses though, and the most
I’ve ever spent on them is about a thousand Dollars. But when it comes to what I can spend the most on in general, that’s bags and they’re ridiculously expensive.’ On how long it takes her to get dressed for events, she says, ‘It takes me just about 30 minutes to an hour if I’m not in a hurry, and if I’m pressed for time, I just wear whatever and go.’ All work and no love makes Rukky a robot, so we want to know what qualities her dream man should possess, and she sums it up with the following words: ‘He must be an amazing person with a good heart, and he should also have a sense of humour, as well as do everything I say. I like people that make me happy.’
On how she balances stardom with other aspects of her life, she quips, ‘I’m a very private person, and the only place you can ever get to see me is on Instagram and Snapchat because I don’t really go out. People don’t really know much about me, and most of what is written about me out there are false. I advise celebs to live a private life, and not to put too much information about themselves out there.’
For the legion of men out there who dream to make her their woman, she refused to state whether she’s in a relationship or not, but as regards marriage, she says, ‘By God’s grace, I’ll get married soon.’ http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/i-will-get-married-soon-rukky-sanda/

Crime › 65year-old Landlord Lured, Raped Our Daughter For Rituals – Victim’s Mother(pic) by Islie(op): 3:10am On Aug 29, 2015 |
In another case that has highlighted the increasing child sexual abuses in Nigeria, a 65-year-old landlord, in Akowonjo area of Lagos, Mr. Ganiyu Sani, has allegedly raped a seven-year-old girl, Blessing. But this time, the parents of the victim believe he did it for ritual purposes.
The civil servant mother of the victim told our correspondent that on Monday, August 17, 2015, when she got back from work and was having dinner with her children, Blessings started to touch her crotch and complain of pain.
“I felt the part she was touching and asked what was wrong with her. I thought she was referring to her lower abdomen and believed it must be stomach ache. But she insisted that it was her private part.
“I asked if she fell down and hurt herself but she simply shook her head. I asked if someone hit her there while she was playing with other children in the neighbourhood, she said no. I started suspecting there was something bigger than what she was telling me.
“I pleaded with her to tell me what happened. That was when she told me about what Baba did. I could not contain my anger. I was shocked, angry and sad at the same time that such an old man could do such a thing to my daughter. My daughter had no reason to lie.”
Blessing’s father, a trader from Ebonyi State, works in the Eastern part of the country while his wife and the children live in Lagos because of his wife’s work.
He was in the East when he received a call from his wife about what had happened to their daughter. He told his wife to take a neighbour along to go and confront Baba, who denied everything immediately.
Baba Sani, a landlord who lives on renting out Danfo buses to commercial bus drivers, lives just two houses away from Blessing’s parents.
Blessing, an exuberant, fair complexioned girl, was not shy when our correspondent spoke with her about what Baba Sani did to her.
She explained that the old man usually crossed from his house to fetch water from a tap beside their house.
She said, “On Friday, my mummy was not around and he came to fetch water (like he normally does). When he was passing in the front of our house, he asked me to follow him to come and collect biscuit.
“When I got to Baba’s house, he put off my shoes and carried me to his bed. He removed my pants and lay on my chest. When I was shouting, he said I should not shout, that he would give me biscuit and N20.
“When he finished, I saw blood coming out and Baba used a cloth to clean it. He said I should not tell anybody. He gave me biscuit and N20.”
Shockingly, without Blessing’s mother knowing, Baba Sani allegedly called the girl and raped her again the following day, a Saturday.
To dispel doubts about the girl’s allegation, she was asked to explain the location of Baba Sani’s bedroom inside the building and her description was found to be exact description when our correspondent eventually paid Baba Sani a visit.
Our correspondent spoke with Baba Sani in company of the director of Esther Child Rights Foundation, Esther Ogwu, who the case was initially reported to by the girl’s parents.
The man, who walked with the gait of someone approaching senility, started off by saying Blessing’s mother was an acquaintance, even though the girl’s mother said she had never had reason to speak to him before.
Baba Sani said, “The girl’s mother once approached me about a month ago to lend her N500. She sent her daughter to collect it and I gave it to them. Later, the girl with her younger sister came to my house that Friday to ask for money and I gave them N20.
“I did not do anything. I don’t know anything about what they have accused me of. God is my witness. I am just surprised about why I am the one the girl is accusing of such a thing.”
When asked how the girl could possibly know where his bedroom was in the house, the old man said he had no idea.
Blessing’s mother said she had many other co-tenants and neighbours and said she couldn’t have imagined asking Baba Sani to lend her any money.
A test conducted at the Mirabel Sexual Assault Referral Centre at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, confirmed that the girl was indeed raped as lacerations on her private part were consistent with sexual assault.
The case was reported at the Gowon Estate Police Division.
Ogwu explained to our correspondent that she was disappointed that initially the police did not handle the case as if they were interested in prosecuting the man. She said rather than charge him to court, they released him from custody despite the fact that they had got the report of the test conducted on the girl.
The child rights activist said, “According to the information I was given, the man was pretending that he was insane when he was arrested. Everybody in the neighbourhood could testify that nothing was wrong with him.
“It should not be too hard to enforce the law in this case. The Child Rights Act is there. It is unfortunate that the mother of the child did not monitor her daughter well. There are so many young children in that neighbourhood that could have been victims of the man.”

Crime › One Killed As Island Hoodlums Hijack Naming Ceremony by Islie(op): 8:51pm On Aug 28, 2015 |
ONE person has reportedly been killed in the Ita Faji area, Lagos State, after some hoodlums stormed a naming ceremony and unleashed mayhem.
It was learnt that the thugs were armed with cutlasses and had come on a reprisal from Idumota, a neighbouring community, for their rival group members who were present at the ceremony on Monday.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the rival group, said to be from John Street in the neighbourhood, had reportedly attacked Idumota boys last Saturday, inflicting injuries on their leader, identified only as Shamee.
Our correspondent learnt that one of the two victims in the Monday incident was attacked on Onikepo Street, where the event was held, while the other was attacked with cutlass on Elias Street, a few distance from the venue.
PUNCH Metro was told that the injured persons were rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where one of them later died.
The identities of the duo had yet to be ascertained as workers of the hospital that our correspondent approached on Thursday declined comments on the incident.
However, a nurse, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the casualties.
“Two youths were rushed here around 8.30pm on Monday from Ita Faji. I learnt that one of them has died. The other is in a critical condition but he has been responding to treatment. I don’t know their names,” she said.
The father of the baby, who was identified only as Taiye, was not around when PUNCH Metro visited the community.
A resident, Sulyman Tijani, said the chaos forced traders to shut their shops as people fled to safety.
He said, “The victims are John Street boys. They were seriously injured and I learnt one of them is dead. They had come to visit a friend at the naming ceremony when they were attacked.
“Last Saturday, there was a clash between the youths from John Street and Idumota. One Shamee, who led Idumota boys, was attacked with cutlasses and charm.
“Around 7.30pm on Monday, Idumota boys trailed their rival group members to the naming ceremony. The victims actually came to see a friend called Billy. Somebody alerted the Idumota youths and they came to disrupt the ceremony that they were not invited to.”
A trader, who identified herself only as Iya Ahmed, said the chaos forced her and others to close their shops. She said the community had been turned into a smoking arena, adding that the incident was reported at the Adeniji Adele Police Station.
She said, “Before the attack, I saw some boys smoking. They are not residents here. I called a youth who normally hosts them to caution his friends. About an hour later, they chased a boy into my shop and beat him up. They destroyed my drinks worth about N7,000 in the process. Some policemen from Adeniji division later came to restore peace.”
The Chairman of the community development association, Mr. Adamson Idowu, said letters had been sent to police authorities to assist in ridding the community of miscreants.
He said, “The rate at which hoodlums cause trouble in our community is disturbing. We have written a letter to the Area ‘A’ Police Command and another one to the Adeniji Adele Police Division and they have promised to come to our aid.”
The Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP Patricia Amadin, had yet to reply to a message sent to her line on the incident as of press time. http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/one-killed-as-island-hoodlums-hijack-naming-ceremony/lalasticlala

Family › Man Seeks Divorce Because Wife Ran Mad After Extra-marital Affair by Islie(op): 9:46am On Aug 28, 2015 |
A business man, Mr Chibuzo Ogaeze, on Thursday pleaded with an Ojo Customary Court in Lagos State to urgently dissolve his marriage to his wife, Chika, because she had gone mad.
Chibuzo told the court that his 26 -year-old wife ran mad following her alleged involvement in extra-marital relationship which was a taboo in his culture.
“The trouble is too much, my wife and her people know they have committed an atrocity. As I speak with you right now, my wife is wandering, stark naked, on the streets.
“You can send any court official to come with me and see it practically, the embarrassment is beyond me, I need an urgent divorce that will detach me from her,” he said.
The business man said that the four-month-old baby in the possession of Chika was in doubt.
‘’She left my house in August 2014 without pregnancy, so she cannot deceive me. I have returned her things she left in my house through this court. I don’t want her to come to my house for any reason.”
He further told the court that his wife always went mad after child delivery, adding that this development usually prompt him to take her to the psychiatric hospital while delivering.
“The problem is spiritual because of her atrocities; I have taken possession of the other three children. In fact, the baby with her should be taken away before she harms her,” he said.
He said that though the marriage had produced four children, he could no longer bear the union because it was getting embarrassing and unbearable.
“I am ready for the refund of the bride price of N10,000 I paid,” he said.
However, the wife, who currently lives with her parents at 7, Simeon Chinoye Street, Ojo, Lagos, earlier told the court that the allegation by the husband was false.
“My husband is only looking for excuse for his actions. Since we met in 2008, he has been maltreating me because he is older than me by far.
“The problem started when he brought his family members to stay with us. His family members have earlier objected to my getting married to their brother,” she said.
‘’He abandoned me during my last pregnancy, but since he says he is no longer interested, so be it. I don’t want to lose my life.
She, however, appealed to the court to impress on her husband to allow her access to her children, provide the agreed monthly allowance of N5,000 and desist from embarrassing her in public.
The Acting President of the court, Chief Joseph Ogunmola, directed the court clerk to go with the petitioner to investigate the claims of Chika before the next hearing.
He added that the dispute over who owned the last baby should be rectified.
He adjourned the case to Sept. 14 for further hearing http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/08/27/man-seeks-divorce-alleges-wife-runs-mad/lalasticlala |

Politics › Police IG, Arase, Moves To Remove Lamorde As EFCC Chairman - Premium Times by Islie(op): 1:45pm On Aug 27, 2015 |
The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission indicating his plan to recall all police officers who have so far served in the commission for five years, authoritative sources at the police headquarters in Abuja have told PREMIUM TIMES.In a letter, with reference number CB/33/80/IGP.SEC/Abj/Vol.52/60, and dated July 14, 2015, Mr. Arase directed the EFCC to compile a list of all officers in the category, and forward to his office without delay. Our sources said the directive, if implemented, would affect key leaders and investigators at the anti-graft agency – including the EFCC chairman – who has also spentmore than five years at the commission.Mr. Larmode has, cumulatively, spent12 years at the EFCC.He was appointed director of operations in 2003 under Nuhu Ribadu’s leadership of the agency. He was then made acting chairman in January 2008 after his boss’ controversial removal. He handed over to Farida Waziri in May 2008, but was again appointed director of operations of the commission in December 2010.On the removal of Mrs. Waziri in November 2011, he was named acting chairman and confirmed substantive head of the agency in February 2012.
PREMIUM TIMES’ sources noted thatmost of the officers being recalled are among the key investigators at the anti-graft agency, a number of them trained abroad. While Mr. Arase’s intentions for moving to redeploy the officers are unclear, the sources said the removalof these key officers will totally weaken the activities of the EFCC especially as it is revving up the war against corruption. However, police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said he is not aware of the said letter. But he confirmed that there is a “routine movement” of police officersattached to various agencies including the EFCC, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, the Security and Exchange Commission, among many others.“This routine movement of officers bythe IGP is in order to allow the officers gather other experiences,” Mr. Ojukwu said. When asked if the motive of the routine movement is to weaken the anti-graft agency, Mr. Ojukwu said, “That is nonsense talk. Any police officer is an investigator and every police officer can work anywhere.”He also said the reshuffling can occur at anytime as ordered by the police chief. The spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, also said he has not been briefed about the Police IG letter.
He promised to crosscheck and revert to PREMIUM TIMES. He is however yet to do so as at the time ofthis report. The EFCC is currently being probed by the senate over allegations by an individual named George Ubor, who is claiming the commission has diverted over N1 trillion assets it recovered from corrupt people. Mr. Ubor himself is being prosecuted by the commission. The probe came in the wake of the commission’s investigations of ToyinSaraki, the wife of the Senate President Bukola Saraki, over allegations of fraud committed when her husband was governor of Kwara State. The EFCC has questioned the motive and procedure of the Senate probe. But in a statement on Tuesday, the Senate president denied any ulterior motive behind the senate’s decision to invite the chairman of EFCC.Mr. Saraki said the anti-graft commission is not the only government agency facing a Senate probe.Anti-corruption activists say the onslaught on Mr. Lamorde and the EFCC followed a similar pattern of attack adopted in removing Mr. Ribadu in 2008, and in weakening thecommission afterwards.Mr. Ribadu’s removal as EFCC chairman in 2007 came a few days after operatives of the commission arrested and charged a former Delta State governor, James Ibori, over corruption allegations. In removing Mr. Ribadu at the time, the then Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, simply redeployed him and sent him off on course at the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, shortly after he charged Mr. Ibori to court. Many believe it was Messrs Ibori, andMr. Saraki, an influential governor and power broker during the Umaru Yar’Adua administration, who backedMrs. Waziri to succeed Mr. Ribadu. For the years that followed, the EFCC remained largely weak and ineffective. In November 2013, speaking in an interview with African Independent Television, AIT, Mr. Ribadu said his removal was in line with a well-crafted plan to destroy the commission. He said, “They did that for three years. They reversed everything that was good, the first thing they did wasto withdraw the prosecutorial powersof the EFCC.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/189078-exclusive-police-ig-solomon-arase-moves-to-remove-lamorde-as-efcc-chair.html |
Crime › Lagos Landlord Who Set Tenant Ablaze Dies by Islie(op): 4:34am On Aug 27, 2015 |
From this story that made FP where a landlord did set his tenant ablaze in Lagos https://www.nairaland.com/2553570/landlord-sets-tenant-ablaze-lagosAnother twist has just developed with the said landlord who did this devilish act also giving up to the ghost. For a better understanding of the incident you can click on the link up there and read the first story The Lagos landlord, Sola Solomon, who allegedly set his tenant ablaze in the Idumota area of the state, has died.
PUNCH Metro learnt from a police source on Wednesday that the suspect died from the burns injuries he sustained while setting fire to the tenant, Abeeb Daraloye.
Our correspondent had reported on Tuesday that Abeeb and his landlord had a disagreement over the use of the compound toilet.
Later in the day, 67-year-old Solomon reportedly poured petrol on Abeeb and ignited a fire with a lighter.
While on fire, the suspect was alleged to have pushed the victim from the top floor of the three-storey building, killing him in the process.
Solomon was reportedly rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital for his burns injuries, but was rejected before he was admitted at the Gbagada General Hospital.
A police source said on Wednesday that the suspect died at the hospital.
He said, “The landlord is also dead. He died at the hospital in the afternoon. So as it is, the case has been resolved.”
Residents on Iga Idunganran Street, Idumota, where the incident happened equally confirmed the death to PUNCH Metro.
“Yes, the man has finally died. He did not survive the injuries. His family members are around. Abeeb’s corpse is also at the Lagos Island General Hospital mortuary, and we don’t know why the police have yet to release it for burial,” a tenant, who asked not to be named, said.
She urged the government to come to the aid of Abeeb’s widow and her child.
Abeeb’s widow, Tope, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, appealed for help, saying her husband’s death was a big blow to the family.
She explained that her husband was planning to travel overseas, and had promised to take her along with their child when he was killed.
Recalling the Monday incident, she said, “My husband had washed the toilet in the morning, when Baba (landlord) went to soil the place. My husband told him that it was not right for him to soil the toilet.
“Baba became angry and slapped my husband before carrying a plank which he smashed on his head. He said my husband had no right to talk to him that way since he (landlord) was the owner of the house.
“In the night, my husband had finished taking his bath and was cuddling our baby in the room when Baba knocked on our door. I told my husband not to answer the call, but he said there was no problem. He thought the man had come to reconcile with him.
“That was how Baba poured fuel on his face and lighted him up. As my husband held him, Baba pushed him down the two-storey house. The whole passage was also on fire before it was put out.”
Her mother, Sidikatu Lawal, said the only justice the family desired was care for Tope and her child.
“They got married just one year ago and their baby is still very young. The only justice that can be done now is the care for both mother and child,” she said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, had yet to respond to an enquiry on the update http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/lagos-landlord-who-set-tenant-ablaze-dies/lalasticlala

Health › Watch Out, Prolonged Sitting Kills by Islie(op): 3:07am On Aug 27, 2015 |
Sitting comes naturally with living. Most daily tasks, from watching the television, eating, driving and performing official duties, are done in a comfortable sitting position. But there is overwhelming evidence associating prolonged sitting with mortality, with a few studies even insisting that a sedentary lifestyle is more lethal than obesity.
Experts say an inactive lifestyle is a certain recipe for a complete degeneration of several parts of the body. According to them, sitting for long periods of time does not only lead to a strained neck and sore shoulders. They posit that an individual with a sedentary lifestyle has a greater risk of developing heart disease, a decrease in insulin production as well as colon, breast and endometrial cancer.
A health practitioner, Dr. Ayo Falade, says it is important that people strike a balance when it comes to sitting for long periods. According to him, winning the war against a sedentary lifestyle comes with making conscious choices.
‘’There have been drastic interventions in foreign countries where manufacturers are pushing standing work stations or special desks into the market. They come in various designs and are configured to remind the user that it is time to stand. We may not have that yet in Nigeria but there is room to improvise. For instance, you can make it a habit to stand up each time you receive or make calls. We all use our mobile phones a lot and that can be the starting block, ’’he says.
Mounting evidence
A recent study done by researchers at the Toronto University, Canada, has revealed that regular exercise is not enough to mitigate the effect of a sedentary lifestyle. In an investigation which looked at 47 other studies on sedentary living, the researchers reveal that exercising regularly cannot reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality associated with prolonged sitting.
While prescribing that people should reduce the amount of time spent sitting by two or three hours over a 12-hour period, co-author of the study, Dr. David Atler, says it is crucial to have small but achievable goals. He also advises that among other personal measures, individuals who cannot but watch television can stand up and exercise during commercial breaks or set up an alarm to remind oneself to move for three minutes every half hour.
“Our study finds that despite the health-enhancing benefits of physical activity, this alone may not be enough to reduce the risk or disease. It is not good enough to exercise for 30 minutes a day and be sedentary for 23 and a half hour. Decreasing sitting is not a replacement or exercise and exercise is not a replacement or sitting more. They are both important to do, and do more of,’’ he says.
In another study, sitting one’s life away has also been linked to obesity, high blood pressure, belly fat and a host of cardiovascular diseases. The study, which was published in American Journal of Preventive Medicine, says a sedentary lifestyle is more deadly for women, and harps on reducing sitting time with a view to improving one’s health outcomes. The study investigated the sitting habits of some women for more than a decade,
Led by Andrea LaCroix, Director of the Women’s Health Centre of Excellence, University of California, United States, the research finds that ‘’older women who reported the most sitting time are more likely to die during a 12-year follow-up, while those sitting for more than 11 hours daily were at the highest risks. ’’
What can be done
As far as Falade is concerned, the most important thing is for individuals to know that their health goal supersedes every other goal. “I always say that being healthy should be the greatest priority for everybody. More and more people now know that a sedentary lifestyle is dangerous to one’s wellbeing. But, do we take action or just shrug the information off? People spend more time planning for the future, but they do not take time to plan how to get there. The human body was not designed to sit for long hours. It is crucial to identify aspects of our lives which demand sitting for a protracted period and deal with it with small but firm steps,” he says.
Another public health physician, Dr. Joyce Igbekele, agrees with him. ‘’ We have local and international studies which daily validates the danger of living a sedentary life. I think it is a major public health issue. Employers, parents and individuals have a role to play. Many of us spend more time at the work place huddled behind a desk. Employers can encourage their staff to move more while in the office, while parents can monitor the time their children spend watching television, ’’she says http://www.punchng.com/health/healthwise/watch-out-prolonged-sitting-kills/ |

Crime › Landlord Sets Tenant Ablaze In Lagos (Pictured) by Islie(op): 7:12am On Aug 26, 2015 |
A landlord in the Idumota, Lagos Island area of Lagos State, Sola Solomon, has allegedly poured petrol and set fire to one of his tenants, identified simply as Abeeb, aka Ogbon.
PUNCH Metro learnt that as the victim struggled to put out the flames, the 67-year-old landlord pushed him down from the top floor of the three-storey building.
The father of one was said to have landed with a thud, as the flames ate through his body.
Our correspondent was told that Abeeb had barely spent five months in the house located on Iga Idunganran Street, Idumota, when he was killed.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident was caused by a disagreement over the use of the compound toilet.
A tenant in the house, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that the quarrel had been settled in the evening and she had pleaded with both parties to maintain the peace.
She said, “Before the incident of yesterday (Monday), there has been a quarrel in the house over the use of the toilet.
“Everybody had complained that the landlord always messed up the toilet after use.
“But yesterday, he had another quarrel with the Abeeb over the use of the toilet. During the argument, he threatened to set the man ablaze; the man also dared him.
“I called Abeeb and calmed him down; I also called the landlord and appealed to him to let the matter go, and he said he had forgiven Abeeb.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that the landlord, however, was sighted by residents later that evening carrying a jerrycan, saying he was going to buy fuel.
The Ondo State indigene was alleged to have bought the fuel and waited patiently in his room till the victim returned from a football viewing centre where he had gone to watch an European league match between Arsenal and Liverpool football clubs.
It was learnt that around 12am, the landlord wet the passageway of the house and knocked on the door of the deceased.
Another tenant, who asked not to be named, said the victim’s wife pleaded with him not to go out.
The continuous rap on the door was said to have forced Abeeb out to confront the intruder, only to see the landlord with a container of fuel.
He said, “As he stepped out of the house, the landlord poured the petrol on him. Before Abeeb could snatch the jerrycan from him, the landlord had ignited fire with a lighter in his hand.
“Abeeb struggled to put out the fire, but the landlord pushed him down from the third floor. He fell to the ground and died.”
Our correspondent gathered that the quick intervention of security guards in the area stopped the fire from escalating.
The other tenants in the house were said to have abandoned the building and fled for fear of being killed.
PUNCH Metro learnt that policemen from the Adeniji Adele Police Division later arrived at the scene to remove Abeeb’s corpse. The police also took the landlord, who sustained burns injuries to the hospital.
A resident, John Ameh, said the landlord was initially rejected at the Lagos Island General Hospital and was taken to the Gbagada General Hospital.
The former occupant of Abeeb’s room, Ruka Rufai, regretted passing the room to the deceased, saying she left the room due to constant threat to her life from the landlord.
She said, “I left that the room about five months ago. The landlord threatened me, so I decided to vacate the room. Abeeb pleaded with me that he needed the accommodation. Now, he has been killed.”
One of Abeeb’s friends, who did not want to be identified, expressed doubt that the suspect would face justice.
The friend, who claimed to be in the same football academy with the victim, said he was shocked when he learnt about the incident on the Facebook wall of a mutual friend.
PUNCH Metro was told that grief-stricken friends of the victim had planned to set the house ablaze, but could not due to the heavy presence of security agents.
A resident, Habib Suleiman, urged the state government to pursue the case against the suspect to a logical end and seize the property.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Patricia Amadin, had yet to get back to our correspondent when contacted on the development as of the time of filing this report. http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/landlord-sets-tenant-ablaze-in-lagos/Picture of the tenant and the house lalasticlala

Health › Foods That Hurt Your Brain by Islie(op): 6:54am On Aug 26, 2015 |
Forget your waistline for a second; some of your food choices could actually affect your memory and cognitive abilities. Here are five foods to go easy on if you want to keep your wits.
Tofu: The soy controversy continues with a study that found an association between high tofu intake and an increased risk of cognitive impairment and memory loss, as researchers speculate that tofu’s phytoestrogens might affect brain function.
Sodium: While the debate about its effects on blood pressure and cardiovascular disease rages on, a study found that high levels of sodium intake paired with low levels of physical activity had a negative impact on cognitive abilities. People with lower sodium intake paired with lower physical activity levels showed slower cognitive decline than participants with high sodium levels and low physical activity. Happily, this is a reversible curse: regular exercise can counteract sodium’s negative effects on the brain, as well as the cardiovascular system.
Trans fats: The stuff could hurt your memory, as consuming more trans fat has been associated with difficulty remembering words!
Tuna: It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s packed with protein for a post-workout meal. But your favourite fish could be impairing your mind. According to a study from the journal Integrative Medicine, people who eat more than three servings of species of fish that are high on the food chain — like tuna, grouper, snapper, bass, swordfish, and shark — each week (or more than four servings per month) are at risk for cognitive dysfunction. The culprit? High levels of mercury!
Saturated fat: Researchers at the University of Montreal found that rat diets high in saturated fat (when 50 percent of all calories come from an unhealthy fat, like palm oil or butter) impaired the functioning of their brain’s mesolimbic dopamine system — the part that controls motivation and wellbeing, and is often implicated in mood disorders, drug addiction, and overeating. http://www.punchng.com/health/healthwise/foods-that-hurt-your-brain/lalasticlala

Family › Man Seeks Divorce Over Wife’s Sexual Escapades On Social Media by Islie(op): 9:31pm On Aug 25, 2015 |
By Rotimi Olaleye Ado-Ekiti – A businessman, Muyiwa Owolabi, has dragged his wife, Tinuola, to an Ado Ekiti Customary Court to seek dissolution of their ten-year-old marriage over “serial adultery with several men” she met on social media.
Both the petitioner and the defendant agreed on the dissolution the marriage over irreconcilable differences but the court is yet to resolve on the custody of their two children,
Muyiwa, the Petitioner, who told the court to dissolve the union claimed that he had caught his wife with several men including his junior at secondary school.
He said Tinuola uses the social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to connect with many men who are now her “man friends and concubines.”
Muyiwa told the court that he had the printouts of the adulterous communications and pictures, including private ones where they recorded pictures of their private parts and other amorous messages.
The printouts of the alleged ‘compromising’ pictures on WhatsApp, and conversation with one Toyin Igbalajobi, her Lagos-based friend who allegedly connected her with men in Lagos and the NOKIA C3 with which he carried out the act were admitted by the court president, Mr. Joseph Ogunsemi and marked as exhibits.
Muyiwa told the court that he caught Tinuola with one Benson Onyechere, his junior at Christ’s School, Ado Ekiti who usually speak with her on phone but when he caught her, she replaced Benson’s name with a supposedly female name, ‘Bola’ to hide her lover’s identity.
The petitioner told the court that another Facebook lover is one Taiwo Oyetunji whom she claimed she met on the social media platform on March 27,2012 while another Facebook lover, one Alaba Sunday Samson had the effrontery of coming to their matrimonial home to visit Tinuola. Muyiwa also identified other men his wife had amorous relationship with to include Aduloju Olu and Andy Harris who is based overseas, Yinka Daramola and, Kunle Lawal and Bashir. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/man-seeks-divorce-over-wifes-sexual-escapades-on-social-media/ |
