CrimeMan Nabbed For Stealing Bridge Rails (Picture of suspect & materials) by Islie(op): 5:34pm On Sep 21, 2015
The operatives of the Lagos State Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested a member of a three-man syndicate who allegedly specialised stealing bridges’ rails in the state. The Commander of the squad, ACP Olatunji Disu, made the disclosure in a statement on Monday in Lagos.

The statement said that his other gang members escaped as soon as they sighted the police. The statement which gave the suspect name as Musa Inuwa, 32, added that he was arrested on Sept. 14, at about 2.30 a.m. at Costain area. It said the suspect’s confessional statement revealed that he belonged to a three-man gang involved in the crime.

The statement quoted Disu as saying that his men intercepted the suspect and his gang members while carting away the stolen railings. “On the fateful night, Policemen from RRS while on routine patrol at Costain by National Theatre intercepted three men. “One was pushing a cart with ten-cut-to-size aluminium bridge rails and the other two were coming behind him.

“On sighting the police approaching, two of the suspects, Abdullahi and Ibrahim bolted away and Musa was arrested. “During preliminary investigation, it was discovered that the suspect and his gang members are in the habit of cutting the rails of highway bridges which are meant to save lives,’’ it said.

The statement said the thieves cut the railings into sizes before selling the aluminium to their ready-made buyers at Ijora and Oyingbo markets. It said that efforts were on to apprehend the other two men. NAN reports that the activities of the thieves have seen many bridges, including Third Mainland, Carter, Stadium, Ojuelegba and Fadeyi not having the protective rails.

NAN also reports that the federal and state governments have spent millions of Naira to replace the rails so as to save people from falling off the bridges.

CrimePick-pocket Gang Arrested When Fighting Over Loot Sharing (Photo) by Islie(op): 12:43pm On Sep 21, 2015
Three persons have been arrested by Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives for alleged phone theft.

They are Ebuka Ekujere, Monsuru Onanuga, and Segun Alao.

The suspects were caught about 1:20pm on Friday, around Eko Hotel on Victoria Island, after they allegedly snatched a phone belonging to a passenger in a tricycle.

It was learnt that Ekujere who boarded the same tricycle with the passenger, removed the phone from the owner’s pocket and hid it on the seat.

Onanuga and Alao were said to have seen him, but they kept mum and later collected N3,000 from Ekujere for not giving him out.

According to the police, Ekujere, who lives on Ezeagu Street in Ajegunle, said the other two suspects knew he was a thief. The police quoted him as saying that he usually settled them whenever they caught him in the act.

The suspects were caught, while arguing on how to share the loot.

In his statement, Ekujere said: “I boarded a tricycle at Eko Hotel roundabout to Obalende and in front of Eko Hotel gate, I removed a handset from a passenger’s pocket and dropped it on the seat.

“Not knowing that his phone has been stolen, the passenger alighted by the hotel.

“But Alao and Onanuga who saw me when I picked the handset, joined me in the tricycle.

“Both of them demanded for settlement and I gave them N3,000 but Onanuga further attempted to collect the phone and my money.

“Then, I engaged them in a verbal confrontation and this attracted the tricycle rider.

“Having explained what transpired to him, he held me and handed me over to RRS operatives stationed in front of Eko Hotel.”

Other suspects denied knowing Ekujere is a thief, but admitted that they collected N3,000 from him.

Onanuga, who claimed that he is a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Jakande Branch, said he was on assignment at Eko Hotel round about to regulate traffic.

He denied knowing Ekujere before the incident, adding that he was not his accomplice.

“I was at my duty post when I sighted a man later identified as Ekujere pick a handset on a seat inside a tricycle. I and Alao challenged him to know if he is the owner but he said he was not.

“He promised to give us N3,000 which he did. Having collected the money, we parted ways.

“Later he came back and asked us to give him N1,000 out of the money which we did. We later saw Ekujere and a tricycle rider dragging themselves.

“We went there to ascertain what was happening, in the process, Ekujere pointed at us to the Police that we are his accomplices. That was how the RRS team arrested us.”

Alao admitted that they demanded for settlement from the prime suspect after he stole the handset.

“I did not know it’s a crime to aid and abet criminal act. We promised never to do that again. We were only looking for daily bread,” he said.

Police spokesman, Joe Offor, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), warned residents against aiding and abetting crime.

Crime12-year-old Girl Commits Suicide In Lagos by Islie(op): 2:33pm On Sep 20, 2015
Suspicion has it that a man who is their neighbour might have raped the girl

BY AYO ALONGE ayhalliday@yahoo.com

Residents in a part of Mushin, Lagos, have been thrown into mourning following the horrific death of a 12-year-old girl, who allegedly committed suicide.

The young girl identified as Mulikat Hassan, Sunday Sun gathered, was found dead around 6pm, dangling from the ceiling of her parents’ one-room apartment located at 102, Mushin Road, Ikate, Lagos. Mr and Mrs Hassan came back from work on the fateful day to behold the heart-breaking sight. Both the parents and neighbours are still in shock and perplexed, wondering what drove the pre-teenage girl to take her life.

One of the neighbours told Sunday Sun on the condition of anonymity, that the act may have been instigated by remote spiritual invocation.

Her words: “I have never seen anything like it before. Yes, I have heard of adults committing suicide but never have I seen or heard of a 12-year old girl taking her own life. I think it is as a result of some sort of spiritual manipulation.”

Expressing pain over the death of Mulikat, another neighbour described the deceased as a very decent and responsible girl. “She was a very good, responsible and respectful girl. It remains a big surprise to me why she would choose to commit suicide. That morning, before her mother went to work, they both passed by my shop and I admired the fine hijab that she (Mulikat) wore, and I told her mother I liked it and she smiled.”

Claiming to have seen the remains of the deceased hanging from the ceiling, another said: “When her mother came back from work, she met her other children playing outside the compound and asked after Mulikat. They told her that she was in the house. On getting to the room, she met the door locked from inside and began to knock, thinking that she was asleep. After banging on the door for some time and calling her name, Mama Mulikat became so worried that she had to scream for help. When we got there, we knocked for a while, still there was no response from inside. So, we broke down the door. The sight was gory. Mulikat had tied a rope to the ceiling fan of the room and hung herself. Her body was dangling. I feel she had been hanging there for hours since the saliva from her mouth was almost dried up,”he narrated.

In a bid to ensure the success of her suicidal act, Sunday Sun learnt that the deceased had, around 4pm, asked her younger siblings to leave the room, claiming that she wanted to clean it. One of her siblings reportedly said she literally dragged him out of the room when he was reluctant to leave, and locked the door on herself. He said he tried going back inside after some time, knocked but his late sister refused to open the door.

Our correspondent tried to get the motive behind the incident. Some attributed it to poverty while another, speaking almost confidently, told our correspondent that it could be as a result of frustration.

Further checks revealed that the deceased may have been frustrated following sexual advances made towards her by an undisclosed neighbour. Suspicion has it that the man might have raped the girl who had always rejected his advances.

“There is a man in our compound who has been making advances to the young girl. She had complained several times and the issue had caused arguments between Mulikat’s parents and the man many times. I suspect that the man might have raped her and maybe due to the frustration, she committed suicide,” a source disclosed.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested about eight suspects in connection with the incident.

CrimeImmigration Officer Dupes Siblings Of N625,000, Escapes (Pictured) by Islie(op): 9:40am On Sep 19, 2015
He could easily pass for someone who was tired of everything around him, not even with the way he carried himself, but beyond his gloomy demeanour, he is truly hurting, angry and deeply frustrated, all at once, though he tried to hide it with some fake smiles.

Iduh Lucky, as he introduced himself to our correspondent when he came to share his story with Saturday PUNCH at the PUNCH headquarters recently, is not only sad about the unemployment crisis in the country, but more so because he has been duped of thousands of naira by a senior immigration officer who offered to help him secure a job and is now nowhere to be found.

The way Lucky strapped his brown envelope to his armpit as he entered the waiting room at PUNCH PLACE gave a clear impression that he had ground-shaking documents in the weather-beaten pack. He left no one in doubt about this as he held on to it tightly until it was time to unveil the content, which he later did, carefully.

Lucky said he met the officer, Ekon Godwin Obeye, a Superintendent of Immigration, through his childhood friend shortly before the ill-fated 2014 recruitment exercise and that he paid a total of N625,000 to the officer.

Pushed to the wall by the frustrations that could only accompany seven years of joblessness, Lucky was open to anything that could fetch him a job. Thus, when a childhood and trusted friend of his, identified simply as Godwin, who was also looking for job, told him he knew someone in Immigration that could help them get a job, he jumped at the offer and they both hoped for the best.

Based on the assurance from his friend, he said he was optimistic the man would help.

Lucky recalled that shortly after that, his friend got a job and he had to relate with Obeye directly.

“He invited me to his office, Immigration office, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, on September 23, 2013. I met with his colleagues and he later took me to his house at Lewis Street. I met his wife and children, and all those erased my doubts.”

Lucky said he met other guys in the house, most of whom gave money to him while he handed them mouth-watering promises of their “employment letter coming soon,” which he said gave him an indication that he was not alone.

He said, “His wife was also there. When those people left, he told me that the deal would cost me N250,000 but I told him I didn’t have that kind of money, so he said I should pay half and pay the remaining when I got my appointment letter. I agreed.

“Right there, I called my dad to send me N100,000, which he sent to my account that same day. Obeye wanted the money in cash but I insisted on paying it into his account so I could have the record. I paid the money into his account that day.”

Lucky, who graduated in 2008 and had remained unemployed since then, kept warming up for the job that was to come, but when it was taking forever, he started disturbing Obeye, who kept reassuring him and stressed the need for him to be patient.

He explained, “He kept promising, but in December, he said I should send him another money because he would need to settle the personal assistant to the minister. All these happened before the test. And there were times he would tell me to send him credit and transport fare to Abuja. On his request, I paid him another N25,000 on December 15, 2013, making it N125,000.”

Soon after the test, which was later cancelled owing to the tragedy that characterised it, Lucky said he started getting worried and had to tell Obeye to refund his money.

He explained, “I kept going to his house, but when he wasn’t forthcoming. When I went with my younger brother to his house in June 2014, he asked for two weeks, saying he had a Qatar visa programme he wanted to introduce to me. I declined, but my brother showed interest in it. It even caused fight between my brother and I.

“He said the programme would cost N500,000, covering ticket, visa and other things. He said someone would be there waiting to receive him and give him a job. While we were there, other persons came to his house for the visa and that convinced my brother.”

“His wife managed to convince my brother and father when they spoke on the phone, but I had my reservations. She assured my father that the visa would be ready in three weeks. On July 11, 2014, my father sent the money and we paid it.”

On the date Obeye gave Lucky that his brother would travel, he said they packed his brother’s bags and left for the airport but that they had to go back home in shame when they couldn’t reach Obeye again. He said they even met some of the people they had met in Obeye’s house before but they all had to go back home. After several calls to Obeye, which were not successful, it finally dawned on Lucky that he had been swindled twice by the same officer.

He said, “I visited his house many times but I didn’t meet him. I went to his office but I learnt he travelled to Abuja on an assignment. My father even came and he met the wife but she kept pleading for more time. When we couldn’t get him, we had to report the case at the Lion Building police station.”

Lucky explained that Obeye’s neighbour paid him N150,000 in October last year, part of which he said he had spent to “mobilise” the policemen on their request. He added, “I’ve not seen this man since then. I went to his house but there was nobody there. The last time I called him, he threatened to deal with me if I called him again. The police said I should call them anytime I lay my hands on him.”

According to the documents Lucky made available to Saturday PUNCH, Obeye had written several undertakings to pay back the money but he had yet to do so. The letter written by Lucky’s lawyer showed that the case had been properly documented with the Area ‘A’ Command Headquarters at Lion Building and the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department at Yaba.

At the moment, Lucky’s hope of being employed with the NIS has since taken a nosedive for the worst, but not without taking his well being along. “I’m sure there are other people whom he has duped, but my worry is that he might soon retire because he is an old man, and if he does, how do I get the remaining N475,000 back,” he said.

When our correspondent called Obeye’s three phone numbers, none was available, and a visit to his office at Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, did not produce any result as he was nowhere to be found. Some officers who confided in our correspondent said nobody knew where he was. They added that there had been series of cases against him but nobody could find him.

“I can tell you that nobody knows where he is and I don’t think he is still with us. He has some questions to answer with us too, but we can’t find him,” one of them said.

The Spokesperson for Lagos State Police Command, Joe Offor, had yet to respond to an enquiry by our correspondent while that of Immigration was not available as of press time.

The amazing news, however, is that Obeye is still in the service of the Nigeria Immigration Service but currently at large.

CrimeHijab-wearing Woman Steals Three Children (Pictured) by Islie(op): 7:36am On Sep 18, 2015
A supposedly mad woman, wearing a hijab, has been arrested by the police in Lagos for stealing three kids from a community at Itire area of the metropolis. The kids, between one and four years, were abducted as they were returning from an Arabic school in the community.

T he suspect, Naimilatu Raheem, was said to have first attempted to kidnap a set of twins, not far from the Arabic school when their grandmother sighted her. The people around challenged her and rescued the twins.

She immediately disappeared from the scene. Raheem, however, did not go far. She accosted Mrs Damilola Alimi on the road, who was returning from the Arabic school with her one-yearold baby, Fathia.

She snatched the girl from her mother. When Raheem’s bag was searched after her arrest, kiddies’ clothes, slippers, ‘amala and ewedu’ were discovered. Before the arrival of the police, the residents dragged her to Oba’s palace, where she allegedly confessed that one Alhaja, who sells herbs, sent her to abduct kids. A female resident said: “How can she now start claiming to be mad? She is not mad! When her phone rang, the caller ID was, ‘My love.’

But she refused to pick it.” Some of the residents said that ID card found on her, showed that her name is Nimot Lukman, who sells soft drinks and resides at Costain area of the metropolis. When journalists asked the suspect some questions, she couldn’t make any sense. She cried throughout. A police source, however, said that the woman had a two-year-old son in the Arabic school, called Mohammed.

Alimi, still shocked over the incident, said: “She approached me and demanded for my baby. Without thinking twice or even knowing what I was doing, I handed Fathia to her. Someone watching us asked me if I knew her. When I said I didn’t, the person asked why I gave my baby to her.
I immediately snatched my baby from her. She ran away.” When Raheem realised that the people in the neighbourhood had discovered her game plan, she ran into the mosque, which housed the Arabic school, whipped out a hijab from her handbag, covered her head and pretended to be praying.

CrimePastor Robbed Widow During Husband's Funeral In Akwa Ibom by Islie(op): 11:18am On Sep 17, 2015
A man of God has been nabbed fore robbing a
widow during her husband's funeral.

Apostle Nsikak Etim, the Founder and General
Overseer of City of Reality Christian Centre, located at Ediene Ikot Obio Imo in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has been arrested after he was fingered in robbing a woman whose husband had just been buried, of cash amounting to over N600,000, two cell phones, a cheque book and ATM card belonging to the deceased, and a briefcase containing the late deceased documents, which was handed over to the
woman’s son for safe keeping..

It was gathered that the pastor who hails from Enen Atai, Itu Local Government Area, had attended the burial held at Ituk Mbag in Uruan Local Government Area of the state uninvited, but as man of God, he was welcomed by the family of the late man, not knowing he had come with another mission; to steal and to rob.
While at the funeral, Apostle Etim, a father of one, carefully monitored the widow as she received sympathizers as they gave her one gift or the other and at the end of the day, he swooped in and stole the bag that contained the money and the other items.

It was learnt that after stealing the bag, the pastor immediately used the stolen cash to acquire a land in Uyo, emptied the account of the late man with the ATM card and handed over the dead man's phones to his wife while keeping the other belonging to the woman, for himself.

But nemesis was to soon catch up with the criminal pastor as he was tracked down by the Department of State Services (DSS), through the stolen phones and was arrested while conducting a church service at his church.

During interrogation, Apostle Etim admitted to his crime, blaming the devil for his actions.
“Please don’t send me to jail. The devil is trying to rubbish my ministry. Please do not involve my wife in this, she is innocent.
I did not tell her where I got the phone from. I don’t want our child to grow up without a father, please have mercy upon me,” he pleaded with the police.

He also promised to return the plot of land he bought with the stolen money to the widow as well as refund all the money he siphoned from his victim's bank account.

CrimeMan, 35, Hangs Self Over N25,000 Bank Loan In Abuja by Islie(op): 7:41am On Sep 17, 2015
Residents of Kubwa, a satellite town in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),on
Tuesday were thrown into panic following the death of a 35-year-old father of two, Mr. Badejo Adeyinka, who had allegedly hung himself at his residence in Byazhin across.

It was gathered that until he committed suicide, the deceased was a shop owner at the Kubwa Village Market that deals in Okirika, second-hand clothes.
City News learnt that Badejo borrowed the sum of
N150,000 from a microfinance bank in Kubwa, but
his younger brother, Emmanuel Adeyinka had assisted in paying part of the borrowed money, leaving him with just N25,000 to complete the payment.

Emmanuel said things were not going well for his
elder brother and was certain the debt was
responsible for the brother committing suicide.

“We were very close siblings. He once jokingly told me that he would hang himself because of the pressure he was getting from the bank to return the borrowed money.
“But I always told him everything would be okay.
I never knew he meant his words. Maybe if I had known, I would have tried to stop him. I pray his soul rests in peace,” he added.

The deceased wife, Mrs. Grace Adeyinka said she
noticed her husband’s body dangling inside their
sitting room when she went to use the toilet in the morning and quickly brought him down and quickly rushed him to the emergency unit of the Kubwa General Hospital where he was declared dead.

“I woke up around 5a.m. to use the toilet and found out that the cloth I used to cover our five-year-old child was missing, and my husband too was not by my side. When I went to the living room, I discovered that it was the cloth he used to hang himself,” she said amidst tears.

When contacted, the head of accident and emergency unit of the hospital, Paul Olise, confirmed the incident adding that his remains have since been taken to the morgue.
Similarly, a police officer at the Kubwa police station, who craved for anonymity because he was not permitted to speak to the press, confirmed the incident.

A mild drama occurred at the Akwa Ibom National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal on Wednesday in Abuja when one of the witnesses of former governor Godswill Akpabio, Mr. Stanley Annah from Ikot Ekpene dramatically pretended to be blind when given the card reader report to state the total number of accredited voters for Ikot Ekpene .

Mr Annah who told the tribunal that elections held in all the polling units of the council suddenly pretended to be blind and mute when told to read out the total number of accredited voters for Ikot Ekpene on exhibit P19.
“I can’t see anything, I can’t read,” he said. When asked if truly he is a graduate of agriculture as he claimed, he said yes but still can’t read the figures in the document. He also claimed he had no idea of the number of polling units in Ikot Ekpene.

After minutes of vain attempt to evade the question, he reluctantly read out 22,761 as the total number of accredited voters for Ikot Ekpene. He had also earlier declared he can’t see nor read the total number of votes cast in the Local Government.

Before exiting the witness box, counsel to the 1st Respondent, Offiong Offiong SAN, asked the court to protect witnesses from vigorous cross examination from the petitioners counsel, Chief Assam Assam SAN. Responding the tribunal chairman said while the court cannot force a witness to answer a question ,there are legally bound to answer questions posed to them at cross examination while the tribunal will take note of witnesses who claim in their statement on oath that they are graduates but pretend they can’t read when inside the witness box.

Also testifying, Hon Uyoata Essien from Etim Ekpo said elections held in his area in a free and fair manner. He was given the card reader report of his unit which stood at 485 for polling unit Nkwot Ikot Eboh but when given the result sheet he signed as PDP agent, he admitted that though his signature is the one on the document, he can’t confirm if actually the 772 declared as total number of accredited voters was true or not.
Another witness, Obonoh Friday Frank from Oruk Anam said elections were free and fair. He was then shown the card reader accreditation to state the number of accredited voters in his unit. The card reader showed that successful accreditation was 147 while failed accreditation was 53 but a final result of 400 was declared with PDP scoring 398.

The last witness for the day was Francis Idungafa , a former PDP chairman from Ika. He admitted that in his polling unit, Primary School Nto Udo Enwan had the result mutilated and inflated. He told the tribunal that total number of accredited voters was cancelled from 530 to 650 while total valid votes cast was also cancelled and inflated from 402 to 648 even though the card reader report showed that the unit had 155 successful accreditation and 137 failed accreditation ,totalling 292 accredited voters. The petition was adjourned to Thursday, September 17,2015 for continuation of hearing.
