NIGER- Soldiers claim to have overthrown Niger’s government following an apparent coup in the West African nation on Wednesday when members of the Presidential Guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum.

EDUCATION- The Federal Government in recent information remained committed to issues of girl-child education and gender empowerment and will promote the same in the policies and programs, Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima told a delegation from the United Nations on Wednesday.

BANK- An account holder with the Keystone Bank, Bala Ibrahim, has been finding it difficult to meet his financial needs after an erstwhile manager of a branch of the bank in the Agege area of Lagos State, Tijani Saleh, allegedly made an unauthorised withdrawal of N5.9m from his corporate account.

NIGERIA- The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, in a landmark judgment, has ordered the disclosure of the spending details of about USD$5 billion Abacha loot by the governments of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.”

The court ordered the government of President Bola Tinubu to “disclose the exact amount of money stolen by General Sani Abacha from Nigeria, and the total amount of Abacha loot recovered and all agreements signed on same by the governments of former presidents Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan and Buhari.”

ECOWAS- Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emerged as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“On peace and security, the threat has reached an alarming level and needs urgent actions in addressing the challenges. Indeed, without a peaceful environment, progress and development in the region will continue to remain elusive. In this regard, we must remain committed to the utilisation of all regional frameworks at our disposal to address the menace of insecurity,” Tinubu said, according to a statement by his spokesman, Dele Alake.

CRIME- A 45-year-old pastor in recent information has been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command on suspicion of defiling and impregnating a minor in the state.

The incident which took place in Ndele community of Emohua Local Government Area of the oil-rich state involves a new-generation church called Gracious Covenant Church.

The pastor simply identified as Piler Erekwa was the subject of a complaint by one Amesi ThankGod who is an in-law to the teenager.

I began to reflect on the application process, and how competitive it was. I recalled that the spot was for eight fact-checkers from Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Africa. My selection meant that I was one of the eight, and my excitement grew again.

The fellowship is my first, in many regards. It was the longest fellowship I ever won, it was the most financially rewarding fellowship in my over 8 years of journalism career, and it was the first fact-checking fellowship I ever had.

OPINION- I am an angry Nigerian and those who know me must know why I have to be! As the pioneer Administrative Secretary of the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), one of the major organizers of the famous ‘Occupy Nigeria’ in 2012, you sincerely can conveniently align his thoughts with a parody in Yoruba which explains the situation Nigeria has found herself in the last 60 years. It is called ‘subu-sere’. Translated literally, it means ‘instability’. Of course, that’s why Godwin Emefiele could imagine himself being a future president of Nigeria. It also defines the miraculous emergence and imposition of the so-called transport unions and their dreaded and untouchable leaders on a supposed Omoluabi society. But then, all these cataclysmic events and the possibility of different backlashes are what society must watch out for.

If we may ask, what’s really going on with the fuel subsidy regime? Well, this is a very big question but how the owners of Nigeria respond to it is the issue. Talking seriously, it requires sincerity, tact and straightforwardness, without which the country cannot move forward.

CBN- Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in a recent update has suspended Godwin Emefiele as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect,” the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Willie Bassey said in a Friday statement.

NIGERIA- President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Senator George Akume as the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation at the council chamber on Wednesday.

SGF Akume took his Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office in the presence of government officials.

NIGERIA- Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Monday night suspended their strike scheduled for Wednesday.

The decision followed a meeting by the representatives of the Federal Government and Organised Labour at the Presidential Villa on Monday night over fuel subsidy removal.
