bizibrain: Nigerians always asking d wrong question, even d deaf and dumb knows we are africa champion.

The question is can we defend our trophy?
please don't get me wrong, the question I posed is a broad one, not referring to what you are saying only.
Sports / Are We Truly The African Champions? by itsabdul(m): 9:55pm On Sep 10, 2014
From what the super eagles have played so far, it makes me wondering if we are truly the African champions.
* Our football lacked expertise
* 80% of our passes gets blocked by opponents, or don't even reach target.
* Our strikers lack mutual understanding.
* We don't have a particular style of play, a common sense is used by the opponents to intercept our ball.
* We lack good midfielders. Mikel to be precise is a player Nigeria needs to get rid of and find a better substitute. It's either he slows down what should be a counter attack for us, or completely losses possession.

Our problems are just too many, now I realized that our AFCON championship is a fluke, and if truly its by merit, then I Pity African Football.

Our chances are just extremely slim, we have already messed up.
Food / Re: 13 Health Benefit Of Walnut by itsabdul(m): 7:47pm On Sep 06, 2014
Indeed you have written extensively on walnut health benefits. It is also beneficial in cases of :

• Coronary heart disease – This is one of the primary therapeutic application of walnuts. The consumption of walnut is effective in preventing or treating coronary heart disease due to:
* its cholesterol reducing property, as it lowers the cholesterol level in the blood, thus, the lower the risk of arterioscelerosis, and heart attack at large.
* its high vitamin B content, which is necessary for the function of the heart.
* its richness in fatty acids, as they make part of the energy source for the cells of the heart. This is highly important, as the body cells use glucose as a fuel, the heart cells use fatty acids as part of their fuel.

• Diabetes – This is very simple to understand of you have read the properties above. It is highly recommended for the diabetics due to its very low carbohydrate content.

• Nervous system disorders – Due to the richness of walnut in essential fatty acids, which are directly involved in metabolism of neurons, and other important substances, they are highly recommended for those suffering from:
* depression
* stress
* irritability.
They can also be highly useful to knowledge workers, and even students.

Food / Potato: A Medicinal Food From Nature by itsabdul(m): 12:47am On Aug 21, 2014
Botanical name:Solanum Tuberosum L.
Other names: Irish potato, White potato
Spanish names: Patata, Papa, Criadilla de tierra
French names: Pomme de terre

Potato is the tuber of the potato plant, Solanum tuberosum L., a herbaceous plant of the botanical family Solanaceae. The potatoes are not formed from the roots of the plant, but rather from the thickening of the stalks underground. Today, potato is the most cultivated vegetable in the world with more than 1,200 varieties. Its cultivation reaches an average of 270 million metric tons per year.

Properties
As a great medicinal food, potato containsalmost all nutrients in significant amounts. It is only deficient in fats, vitamin E, vitamin B12, provitamin A and calcium. Its content are as follows:

Carbohydrates – The carbohydrate in potato is primarily made up of starch, which represents 16% of its total content. Fructose, sucrose and glucose are also present but in small amounts, representing only 0.4% of its total content.
NB: The starch in potato is easily digested, and does not cause flatulence.

Proteins – Potato contains significant amount of proteins, about 2% of its total content. The proteins in potato are of highbiological value, as they provide all the amino acids in adequate proportion needed by the body to foster growth. The richness of potato in an amino acid known as lysine, which is usually deficient in grains, makes its consumption togetherwith grains recommended.

Vegetable fiber – Potatoes are rich in soluble vegetable fiber, representing about 1.6% of its total content. Just about 300g of this great medicinal food, provides one-fifth of the daily fiber needed by the body.

Vitamins – Potatoes are quite rich in B complex vitamins, especially vitamin B1 and B6. It also contains significant amounts of vitamin C, which although may lost part of this vitamin in cooking process. The most amount of this vitamin is lost when they are fried, and the least when they are steamed.

Minerals – Potatoes are poor in calcium, but rich in manganese, copper, zinc, and other trace elements. They are also rich inpotassium, and low in sodium, thus, making them appropriate for those suffering from hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.

Health benefits / medicinal uses of Potato
From the above properties, we have seen potato as a rich medicinal food with outstanding amount of nutrients. This makes it indicated in the following cases:

Stomach disorders
Potato is said to be the stomach’s best friend. This is primarily due to two important factors:
* Its antacid effect – Since potatoes are a significant alkaline food, they become capable of neutralizing excess acid. This effect is produced in the stomach, blood and even urine.

* Sedating substances – From series of research conducted at laboratories in different parts of the world, potato has been shown to contain small amounts of various sedative substances which are widely used in pharmaceuticals. These natural sedative substances act locally in the stomach, and in-turn relaxes it. Additionally, the physical nature of potatois also considered as a factor, because thesoft texture of potato reduces the need for digestive effort in the stomach. From the above reasons, the consumption of potato mainly in puree form, becomes recommended and beneficial in cases of gastritis, stomach prolapse, nervous stomach, stomach ulcer, and stomach conditions in general.

Kidney disease

As we have seen above, potato possess an antacid effect, which gives it the ability to alkalize the blood and urine, aiding the elimination of toxic substances. Doing this, they relieve the kidney’s work and most importantly, purify the blood. Thus, the consumption of potato is beneficial in cases of arthritis, kidney stones, metabolic acidosis, and excess uric acid.

Obesity
The consumption of potato does not in anyway cause obesity, but can be very useful in fighting it for some reasons.

* Potatoes are rich in B group vitamins, which help metabolize carbohydrates andminerals that prevent fluid retention in the tissues, which in-turn contributes to obesity.

* The consumption of potato also produces a sense of satiety which reducesthe desire to continue eating. This paves way for a lesser consumption of food, and at the same time satisfaction is also achieved.

Cardiovascular disease
Since potatoes are lacking in fat, low in sodium and rich in potassium, they become ideal in cases of arteriosclerosis, hypertension, angina (heart attack), and heart failure.

Health / Pineapple As A Medicinal Fruit by itsabdul(m): 2:35pm On Jul 20, 2014
Botanical name: Ananas comosus
Merr.
Other names: Nana, Ananas,
Cayenne pineapple.
Pineapple which is a compound fruit
is a fruit of the pineapple plant,
Ananas comosus Merr., a herbaceous
plant of the botanical family
Bromeliaceae, which usually reaches
a height of 50 cm.
Pineapple was first cultivated
commercially in Hawaii in the
nineteenth (19th) century, and are
now the largest producer of this
popular and nutritious fruit.
Properties of Pineapple fruit
The components of pineapple are
divided into the nutritive and non-
nutritive components. Below are its
nutritive components:
● A pineapple fruit which is properly
matured contains a high amounts of
carbohydrates, which are mostly
sugars. Carbohydrates in a ripe
pineapple are set to be about 11% of
its total content.
● The pineapple fruit contains very
low amounts of fats and proteins.
● It contains minerals in significant
amounts. Some of the minerals
present are manganese, magnesium,
potassium, iron etc.
● Vitamins are present in pineapple
in reasonably high amounts. It is
noteworthy of vitamin C, vitamin B6,
vitamin B1, and folates.
Below are its non-nutritive
components:
● Bromelin – This substance found in
pineapple acts in the same way as
the pepsin present in the stomach. It
helps breakdown proteins and
facilitates digestion in the digestive
tract.
● Citric and malic acids – The
presence of these acids potentiate
the action of vitamin C. They also
gives pineapple its characteristic
acidic taste.

Health benefits / medicinal uses of
pineapple
The pineapple fruit is known for
various medicinal values. Its most
common indication is its ability to
function as a wonderful dessert, as it
facilitates the digestion of other
foods. Below are some of the
medicinal uses of pineapple:
● Gastric ptosis – This disorder which
is known as prolapsed stomach is
caused by the stomach’s inability to
empty itself. The regular consumption
of pineapple in the cases of this
disorder can help eliminate it. This
can be done by eating a ripe and
fresh pineapple before and after
meal.
● Sterility – For those suffering from
sterility caused due to insufficient
production of gamates ( sperm in
men and ova in women) should
consider the consumption of
pineapple as a great way of getting
rid of this disorder. Pineapple
contains a trace element known as
manganese, this tropical fruit can be
said to be one of the richest fruit in
this mineral. Manganese is a trace
element which is actively involved in
the formation of body’s reproductive
cells.
Thus, the concept behind this
indication shows that ‘the more you
eat pineapple the more your body’s
supply of manganese, and the more
your body’s supply of manganese the
more the formation of reproductive
cells in your body’.
● Hypochlorhydria – The regular
consumption of pineapple is highly
recommended in cases of scanty
gastric juice (hypochlorhydria). This
condition is manifested by a very
slow digestion and a sense of
heaviness in the stomach.
● Stomach cancer – Pineapple is
known to be a strong inhibitor of the
formation of nitrosamines,
carcinogenic substances (substances
that can cause cancer) formed in the
stomach as a result of chemical
reactions between nitrites and
specific proteins contained in certain
foods. Thus, a person willing to avoid
stomach cancer should adopt the
regular consumption of pineapple
fruit.
● Obesity – The pineapple fruit is a
very good complement to a weight
loss diet. It has a moderate satiating
effect which reduces appetite, and
moreover, it facilitates urine
production.
