Jamb are the most useless examination body on earth. i.knew what I wrote, what I was expecting was far beyond what I saw.
What I notice is that the subjects dat you have written excellently were d ones you scored less, and those that u have written woefully were the ones you scored more. So please what method do dey use in marking these jamb scripts?
And for those that are blaming nigerian students in general should please think again, not all students are dull! Most of the gurus I know scored less than 200.
And for me, after studying for months, they gave me just 210.

Health / Check Out The Health Benefits Of Onions by itsabdul(m): 11:59pm On Feb 21, 2013
Botanical family: Liliaceae.
Source- http://foodsanddiseases.com/onion-health-benefits-medicinal-uses-and-properties
Onion is a bulb of the onion plant, Allium cepa L., of the botanical family liliaceae. It is formed from an underground thickening of the stalk. Onion is one of the nature’s most endowed food when it comes to healing. This has been found since during the ancient times of the Israelites, about 3500 years ago. They found it to be very effective in the treatment and prevention of respiratory disorders.

PROPERTIES OF ONION
The following are some of its composition:

• Carbohydrates are present in about 6.85%.

• Proteins are also present in about 1.16%.

• Contains very little fat content of about 0.16%.

• Contains almost all vitamins, only with the exception of vitamin B12, although they are all in small amounts.

• Minerals are also present in significant quantities, among which potassium stands out. Trace elements like sulphur are also present.

• Flavonoids are an important non-nutritive component present in the onion. An example is quercetin. In general, flavonoids help improve blood circulation, stops the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, a type of fat in the blood that causes arteriosclerosis, and blood clot.

• Essential oil also forms part of the non-nutritive components. They are composed of several substances, amongst which thiosulfinate and allyl disulfide stands out. Essential oils are responsible for the onions typical odour and volatility.

• Vegetable fiber is also present in onion. They have been attributed to onion’s anti-diabetic action, and its diminishing effect on the absorption of cholesterol.

• Enzymes are present in onion in rich amounts. Some of these enzymes present includes diastase and oxidase, which both have an invigorating effect on the digestive process (i.e they help make digestion more easy and efficient).

• Glycoquine, a vegetable hormone is present in onion. It helps reduce the blood’s glucose level. Thus, explaining onion’s anti-diabetic action.
HEALTH BENEFITS / MEDICINAL USES OF ONION
After reading the above properties of onion, you will be able to grasp some of its medicinal applications. Its medicinal properties are mainly attributed to its non-nutritive components (the essential oil, vegetable fiber, glycoquine, enzymes and so on). These substances are said to be responsible for most the onion’s medicinal properties such as its anti-asthmatic, diuretic, antibiotic, and anticarcinogenic effects. Below, are some of the onion’s well known medicinal indications:

• Bronchial asthma – Studies have proven that thiosulfinate, one of the onion’s essential oil, is effective in stopping bronchial allergic reactions to asthma. This substance causes the dilation of the bronchial passage. The studies have also concluded that, the anti-allergenic effect and the dilating effect of the bronchial passage ways of the onion, makes the eating of raw onion effective in cases of bronchial asthma.

• Cancer – studies conducted by the National Cancer Institute of United States, found that those who eat more onions have a much lower risk of developing cancer. It shows that the onion has the capacity to neutralize carcinogens ( substances that can cause cancer http://foodsanddiseases.com/cancer ), and also prevent the development of tumor cells.

• Diabetes - The consumption of onion helps reduce the blood glucose level. This is due to the presence of glycoquine. As we already know, diabetes is caused due to an increased level of glucose in the blood, therefore, the consumption of onion is highly indicated for the diabetics.

• Coronary heart disease and arteriosclerosis - Onion help prevent arteriosclerosis and thrombosis, thus, improving blood circulation. Evidences have also shown those who eat onions have a lower risk of dying from a heart attack. We can therefore conclude that, ‘regular consumption of onions in any form, be it raw, boiled, or baked, helps: ◊ improve blood circulation ◊ prevents arteriosclerosis, and ◊ reduces the risk of suffering from heart attack.

• Kidney disorders - the alkalizing effect of onion explains this. It facilitates the elimination of waste products from the body. This elimination can be in the form of an increase in urine production. Thus, those suffering from kidney related disorder such as kidney stones and renal failure, should increase the consumption of onions in their diets.

• liver disorders- Onions are highly recommended in cases of liver disorders as they help stimulate the detoxifying effect of the liver. They are highly indicated in cases of hepatic failure.

• Respiratory disorders - The effect of onions on all respiratory disorders is well known all over the world, even during the ancient times. The consumption of onions is highly recommended in cases of pneumonia, asthma, cough, sinusitis, and other respiratory disorders.

Food / Know Everything About Tomato: Its Properties And Health Benefits by itsabdul(m): 8:09pm On Jan 26, 2013
DESCRIPTION: Tomato ('Solanum lycopersicum' L.), is the fruit of a herbaceous plant of the botanical family "Solalaceae". It varies in colour, from green to yellow, then red.

Even though tomato was not completely accepted until in the late 19th century, it is now the most widely spread plant of the botanical family "Solanaceae". When it was first introduced as a food, many people neglected it as they thought it was the red fruit of a well known toxic plant known as "belladona", so it was then believed to be a poisonous fruit.
Today, the popularity and health benefits of tomato makes it an essential part of a diet worldwide.

PROPERTIES: The components of tomato can be classified into,
• nutritive components
• non-nutritive components
NUTRITIVE COMPONENTS
These are the main nutrients present such as minerals, vitamins, and so on.
A fresh tomato contains a lot of water, representing about 94% of its total weight. It also contains small amounts of proteins and fat, about 0.9% and 0.33% respectively, carbohydrates in form of glucose and fructose also present, making up about 3.53%.
Vitamins are not left out as it contains vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, and provitamin A. Others such as niacin and folates are also present in significant amounts. Of all these vitamins present, vitamin C is the most abundant, about 19.1 mg/100 g, thus we see here that tomato can be a great substitute for orange in cases of vitamin C.
Minerals such as magnesium, potassium, iron and phosphorus are also present in significant amounts. Tomato is a very good source of iron as it contains about nine times as much as milk.

NON-NUTRITIVE COMPONENTS
These are substances in food which are not considered as nutrients but plays a vital role within the body. They include:

• Lycopene: This is the pigment that gives tomato its characteristic red colour. At first, lycopene was thought to be of no importances to the human body, but after a research was carried out on in at " Heinrich-Heine University Germany" its importance became clear. Among the conclusions made from the research is that:
* lycopene is a potent antioxidant, thus preventing the deterioration that free radicals produce in the DNA of the cells
* lycopene is present in the human blood, and one of the most abundant carotenoid in the human body
* lycopene also plays a role in the control of cellular growth.

• Vegetable fiber: tomatoes contain a considerable amount of vegetable fiber within them, which contributes a lot to its laxative and cholesterol reducing effect.

• Organic acids: Organic acids such as oxalic and malic acid helps in giving tomato its characteristic flavour. They also give rise to its alkalizing effect which makes it a good depurant.

HEALTH BENEFITS /MEDICINAL USES OF TOMATO
The nutritive and non-nutritive components of tomatoes makes it in indicated in the following cases:

• ARTERIOSCLEROSIS: This is the narrowing and hardening of arteries due to deposition of cholesterol in their inner lining, which causes less blood flow. The antioxidant effect of tomato helps prevent the deposition of this cholesterol.
Tomatoes are additionally useful for the elimination of all circulatory system disorders, which includes:
* heart attack
* angina pectoris
Remember, "LESS BLOOD FLOW, LESS LIFE"

• PROSTRATE CONDITIONS: The fact that tomato is the richest food source of lycopene, the carotenoid that protects the cells of the prostrate from abnormal growth, makes it highly indicated in cases of prostrate conditions.
A research conducted at " Harvard University USA" showed that men who regularly eat tomatoes in any form, are at much lower risk of prostrate cancer. Thus, the regular consumption of tomatoes helps prevent prostrate cancer (one of the most frequent cancers in males). In general, its consumption improves the general well-being of the prostrate.

• CANCEROUS DISORDERS: The protective effect of tomato on cancer is not limited to prostrate cancer only, it also has a protective effect from the following cancers:
* stomach cancer
* colon cancer
* mouth cancer
* rectum cancer and
* oesophagus cancer, in short all digestive tract cancers.

• DEPRESSED IMMUNE SYSTEM: The body's ability to fight infectious agents can be highly increased through the regular consumption of tomato. This is due to the presence of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant carotenoids in significant amounts.
It can thus be said that " regular consumption of tomato helps lowers the risk of contacting diseases ".

• OTHERS: The diuretic effect of tomato makes it highly recommended in cases of:
* excess uric acid (gout)
* kidney failure with a consequent increase in blood urea.
* high concentration of toxins in the body due to diets rich in proteins or meat.
Additionally, the alkalizing effect of tomato helps neutralize and eliminate the metabolic waste products in the body.
