Governnor Hope Uzodimma of Imo state is the candidate of all Progressive Congress (APC), who took fourth position in the 2019 April Gubernatorial election which was held in imo state. But something surprising happened some months after, on January 2020, the People's Democratic Party's (PDP) candidate, Governor Emeka Ihedioha who was declared winner by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was sacked from office by the Supreme Court sitting in Abuja. Few months ago, The Reform and Advancement party (RAP) and it's Gubernatorial candidate, called Kingdom Okereke filed an Application challenging the Supreme Court's Judgement that brought the incumbent Governor of Imo state, Governnor Hope Uzodimma into power, from fourth position to first position. According to The Reform and Advancement Party (RAP) and it's candidate, said APC never supported Hope Uzodimma as Uche Nwosu was the rightful candidate for All Progressive Congress, and not Hope Uzodimma who came from no where, they also alleged in the application filed that All Progressive Congress didn't do campaign for Hope Uzodimma Because they were not many of it's chieftains were not in support. It may interest you to know that Uche Nwosu was formerly the Flag bearer of All Progressive Congress (APC), which was initiated by his Father in-law, former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Anayo Okorocha, but because the former Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole, who the then Governnor of imo state gave all his support and helped to become their Party's Chairman, thought would help him trigger his Son in-law succeeding him. Meanwhile, many APC members opposed Rochas Okorocha's Son in-law, including Adams Oshiomole, the then National Chairman of the Party, so, Rochas Okorocha adviced his Son in-law, Uche Nwosu as he left All Progressive Congress and went to Action Alliance (AA), where he was also given a Governorship ticket. Now, remember he was still APC candidate, and again was given another ticket from Action Alliance (AA). Then he was latter disqualified for possessing double tickets by the Federal High Court. This is actually where The Reform and Advancement Party (RAP) capitalized on and filed their application to federal High Court. The case has been a Adjourned several times and the last time, it was adjourned till 29th September, 2020, and tension has risen again as many People's hope is high on the out come of the judgement come 29th of September between The Reform and Advancement Party (RAP) and Governor Hope Uzodimma of APC. (CNN) A Black Louisiana man will spend the rest of his life in prison for stealing hedge clippers, after the Louisiana Supreme Court denied his request to have his sentence overturned last week. Fair Wayne Bryant, 62, was convicted in 1997 on one count of attempted simple burglary. In his appeal to the Second Circuit Court of Louisiana in 2018, his attorney, Peggy Sullivan, wrote that Bryant "contends that his life sentence is unconstitutionally harsh and excessive." Last week, though, the state Supreme Court disagreed -- with five justices choosing to uphold the life sentence. The lone dissenter in the decision was Supreme Court Chief Justice Bernette Johnson, who wrote that "the sentence imposed is excessive and disproportionate to the offense the defendant committed." Johnson is the only female and Black person on the court. The rest of the justices are White men. The sentence is sanctioned under the habitual offender law, Johnson noted in her dissent, meaning that Bryant's previous criminal history supports the sentence. Bryant was convicted in 1979 for attempted armed robbery, in 1987 for possession of stolen things, attempted forgery of a check worth $150 in 1989 and for simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling in 1992, all before his 1997 arrest for the failed attempt at stealing the hedge clippers. But Johnson also mentioned the cost associated with Bryant's sentence, writing that in his 23 years in prison, he has cost Louisiana taxpayers over $500,000. "If he lives another 20 years, Louisiana taxpayers will have paid almost one million dollars to punish Mr. Bryant for his failed effort to steal a set of hedge clippers," she wrote. Bryant's sentence is a "modern manifestation" of "pig laws," which were created in the years after Reconstruction, Johnson also said. The laws "criminalized recently emancipated African American citizens by introducing extreme sentences for petty theft associated with poverty," she wrote. "This man's life sentence for a failed attempt to steal a set of 3 hedge clippers is grossly out of proportion to the crime and serves no legitimate penal purpose," Johnson wrote. While Johnson said she would grant the appeal, five justices denied it and one abstained. Sullivan, Bryant's appellate attorney, told CNN she agrees with Johnson's dissent. Obalatule:You are 100% correct. Those custom rascals plying Lagos-Benin highway once sized my new vehicle and drove me in it to their battered Akure office to pay for new custom duty. To be honest that was my first visit to Ondo suppose state capital city and I must say my hometown which is Uromi in Edo state is far more developed than that Akure. |
