Iran on Tuesday reported no new coronavirus deaths in nearly a third of its provinces for 24 hours but said there were more than another 2,100 cases of infection nationwide. The virus spread rapidly to all 31 of Iran’s provinces soon after the country’s first cases — two deaths in the holy city of Qom — were announced three months ago. “Ten provinces have reported zero deaths in the past 24 hours and six others only one,” said health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour. The southwestern province of Khuzestan was still classified as “red” — the highest level on the country’s colour-coded risk scale, he said. But the situation was “stable” in most other provinces, Jahanpour told a televised news conference. Khuzestan was currently the only province still classified as red, he added. The official had warned in previous days of a deteriorating situation in the provinces of Lorestan, North Khorasan, Kerman, Sistan and Baluchistan and Kermanshah. On Tuesday, he said 62 fatalities in the past 24 hours had taken the overall death toll in the country’s outbreak to 7,199. Another 2,111 new infections were confirmed over the same period, he said, raising the total caseload to 124,603. More than 97,170 of those hospitalised with the virus had recovered and been discharged, he added. Experts both at home and abroad have voiced scepticism about Iran’s official figures, saying the real toll could be much higher. |

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James said Monday he’s eager for the NBA season to resume, as long as the health of players and their families won’t be endangered amid the COVID-19 pandemic. James, speaking on the “WRTS: After Party” programme on the Uninterrupted multi-media platform, said he hoped the NBA season resumes sooner rather than later. “Definitely not giving up on the season,” said James, whose Lakers led the Western Conference when the NBA suspended play on March 11 after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus. The virus brought the global sport to a virtual standstill, but as lockdowns aimed at preventing its spread have begun to ease, the sport has begun to re-emerge. Germany’s Bundesliga became the first top European football league to resume after a two-month hiatus at the weekend. In North America, the popular NASCAR stock car series resumed without spectators on Sunday and golf stuck a toe in the water with a made-for-TV charity event featuring Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson. The NBA, along with Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and Major League Soccer are still formulating plans to return, while the NFL tries to stay on course for an on-schedule season opening in September. “Not only myself and my teammates, the Lakers organization, we want to play,” James said. “There’s a lot of players that I know personally that want to play. And obviously, we don’t ever want to jeopardize the health of any of our players or any of the players’ families and so on and so on. “This is a pandemic that we have no idea — we can’t control it,” James said. “We’re going to listen to the people that’s been following this pandemic, following the numbers, following the data.” The Lakers own the second-best record in the league behind Eastern Conference leaders the Milwaukee Bucks and were already assured of a spot in the playoffs — which were due to start in April. Among the uncertainties surrounding an NBA return is whether all of the remaining games of the regular season will be played and whether teams will play in their home arenas or at sites that will better allow the league to limit access for safety reasons. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told players last week that he expected the league to study outbreak and testing developments for another two to four weeks before making a decision about resuming competition. James has said he doesn’t relish the idea of playing without fans in attendance, but he said Monday he just wants to be back on court. “You know, I want to get back to playing,” James said. “I love to play the game of basketball. I know how inspiring the game of basketball is. I know how inspiring sport is, itself. “As soon as possible, when we can get back out there, we’d love to bring the game of basketball back to our fans.” |

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has begun moves to finalise Super Eagles Manager, Gernot Rohr’s new contract within one week, with a view to getting the German ready to continue working on getting the senior national team to the top of the world game. The NFF’s new deal proposal for the former Bordeaux defender has some clauses, which the coach must agree to if he desired to continue managing the Super Eagles. Among the conditions is that he must reside in Nigeria to monitor the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) players. This is aside accepting that his salary would be paid in naira. Yesterday, the NFF’s executive committee in a communique issued after its video conferencing mandated its Secretary General, Sanusi Mohammed, to “liaise with Rohr with a view to concluding all matters around his new contract within the next one week.” Aside issues on Rohr’s new contract, the NFF also acknowledged FIFA’s advice on how to utilise the $500,000 relief fund sent to the federation and directed its secretariat to set machinery in motion to ensure the fund was utilised to the letter as advised by FIFA. “The core areas approved for the utilisation in line with the FIFA Forward 2.0 Programme include but not limited to management and staff salaries, men’s league, women’s league, referees’ development training, National Teams (including boys and girls’ youth teams), office operations, renovations and furnishing of Bauchi NFF/FIFA technical centre,” it said. The federation, which yesterday distributed palliatives to the Lagos State government, just as it earlier did to Kano and the Federal Capital Teriitory, Abuja, praised its members, as well as management and secretariat staff involved in the distribution of the palliatives. According to the communiqué, the executive committee also “endorsed the re-jigging of the terms of reference and objectives of the NFF Foundation, which was set up in July 2019. “The Foundation, headed by Mr. Mohammed Edewor (who was also part of the meeting for more than 30 minutes), will now add to its original mandate of raising funds for empowerment initiatives for former internationals by way of training and skill development; football community and social change programmes; grassroots development programmes and; football-for the girl-child and women football empowerment programmes. Mr. Edewor availed the committee of ongoing efforts at raising funds to kickstart the work of the Foundation, some of which has already met with success.” With a view to being ready anytime the Federal Government announced the resumption of sporting activities across the country, the NFF mandated “its Football Committee to liaise with the heads of the various Leagues (Nigeria Professional Football League; Nigeria National League; Nigeria Women Football League and; Nigeria Nation-wide League One) and other important stakeholders on the return of the domestic football season.” |
