3 Beautiful Truths Every Divorced Christian Needs to Know
Dear Divorced Christian,

That term still stings, doesn’t it? It seems as if people everywhere want you to wear a large, scarlet letter “D” around your neck. Every form you complete asks if you are divorced or widowed, not just single or married. You are often scorned by the church because of your past. You feel as if you are a total and complete failure.

It’s miserable to not fit in, especially at church. You don’t really fit with the singles, an eclectic group that spans many decades. And you don’t fit with the married groups either, even though you once did. You don’t fit with the happy little families, all coming together to celebrate holidays and special events as a “complete” family.

Romance / Transcript Of The Teaching Delivered By The Black Bishop At The Royal Wedding by ivoryfile: 2:08pm On May 19, 2018
TRANSCRIPT OF THE TEACHING DELIVERED BY MOST REV. MICHAEL BRUCE CURRY AT PRINCE HARRY & MEGHAN MARKLE’S WEDDING.

THE POWER OF LOVE

The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, the 27th Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church, delivered the address titled “The Power of Love” at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding Saturday at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

The transcript is below:

SOURCE: http://www.ivoryfile.com/transcript-of-the-teaching-delivered-by-most-rev-michael-bruce-curry-at-prince-harry-meghan-markles-wedding/

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said:

“We must discover the power of love,

the redemptive power of love.

And when we discover that, we will be able to make of this old world

a new world.

Love is the only way.”

There’s power in love. Do not underestimate it.

Anyone who has ever fallen in love,

knows what I mean.

But think about love in any form or experience of it.

It actually feels good to be loved, and to express love.

There is something right about it. And there’s a reason.

An old medieval poem says it:

“Where true love is found, God himself is there.”

The Bible, 1 John 4 says it this way.

“Beloved, let us love one another,

because love is from God;

Everyone who loves is born of God

Whoever does not love does not know God

For God is love.” (1John 4:4-cool

There’s power in love.

Love can help and heal when nothing else can.

Love can lift up and liberate for living when nothing else will.

And the love that brings two people together

is the same love that can bind them together,

Whether on mountaintops of happiness

and through valleys of hardship.

Love is strong as death

It’s flashes are flashes of fire.

Many waters cannot quench love

Love can see you through! There’s power in love.

ii

But the love of which we speak is not only for couples getting married or just for interpersonal relationships.

Jesus of Nazareth taught us that the way of love is

the way to a real relationship with the God who created all of us,

and the way to true relationship with each other as children of that one God,

as brothers and sisters in God’s human family.

One scholar said it this way:

“Jesus had founded the most revolutionary movement in human history: a movement

built on the unconditional love of God for the world and the mandate to live that love.”

(Charles Marsh’s The Beloved Community)

TRANSCRIPT OF THE TEACHING DELIVERED BY MOST REV. MICHAEL BRUCE CURRY AT PRINCE HARRY & MEGHAN MARKLE'S WEDDING

And in so doing, to change lives and the world itself! There’s a reason.

An old spiritual may suggest why:

“If you cannot preach like Peter, There is a balm in Gilead

And you cannot pray like Paul, To make the wounded whole

You can tell the love of Jesus, There is a balm in Gilead

How he died to save us all To heal the sin sick soul”

“Just tell the love of Jesus, how he died to save us all.”

He didn’t sacrifice his life for himself

Or anything he could get out of it

He did it for others, for the other, for the good and wellbeing of others

That’s love

How does St. Paul say it?

Love is not jealous, rude, or boastful.

Love does not insist on its own way.

Love is unselfish, sacrificial, kind and just.

Love seeks the good and the well-being of the other.

Love makes room and space for the other to be. (See 1 Corinthians 13:4-7)

This love, this is the way of Jesus. And it’s game changer.

Imagine our homes and families when this way of love is the way.

Imagine our neighborhoods and communities when love is the way.

Imagine our governments and countries when love is the way.

Imagine business and commerce when this love is the way.

Imagine our world when love is the way.

No child would go to bed hungry in such a world as that.

Poverty would become history in such a world as that. T

he earth would be as a sanctuary in such a world as that.

We would treat one another as children of God, regardless of differences.

We would learn how to lay our swords and shields down by the riverside

to study war no more.

There would be a new heaven, a new earth, a new world.

A new and beautiful human family

The very dream of God

Love is strong as death

It’s flashes are flashes of fire.

Many waters cannot quench love

iii

The late French Jesuit, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, was at once a scientist, a Roman Catholic priest, a theologian, a true mystic. His was one of the great minds and spirits of the 20th century.

He suggested that the discovery and harnessing of fire

was one of the great technological discoveries of human history.

Nairaland / General / God Delivered Winners’ Chapel Pastor From Visible Death During Offa Robbery by ivoryfile: 6:29pm On Apr 15, 2018
This is strictly beyond human comprehension. The visible protective power of God was seen vividly over one Winners’ Chapel pastor at Offa Kwara State, Nigeria during the deadly armed robbery attack that claimed over 30 lives, eight police officers at Owode Division, Offa were also killed in the attack, and the robbers made away with police arms and ammunition.

Here is the testimony.

The Pastor who was on his way for an evening service alongside his family members, on the fateful day stopped to use the ATM (automated teller machine ) at GTBank (One of the robbed banks.
On seeing the neatly suited pastor, the robbers mistook him for the bank manager.
They held him and ordered him to lead them safely to the bank vault.
The innocent castor cried out, he explained he is a pastor going for an evening program & had only stopped to make withdrawal from the ATM.

The robbers would not believe his claim, shot rapidly and killed people (number not confirmed ) in the bank to scare the pastor (to them, the bank manager).
They ordered everyone carrying ATM card to make instant transfer from the machine to their (Robbers ) account, which they all did.

The pastor was ordered to slot in his own atm and make transfer just like every other person, he obeyed the order, but something strange happened!
while he was trying to insert his card, the machine went completely bank!.
Wow!
Angrily, the robbers questioned his (the pastor) identity and at this time became totally upset and ready to shoot dead, the pastor.
One of the robbers questioned him, “Who are you?” the pastor replied he is a pastor at the living Faith Church in the town and that he only came to make withdrawal at the atm.
To further clear himself, he pointed at his car and that his children are in the car waiting for him.

At the point, one of the robbers pointed his gun at the pastor, attempt to shoot him

At some point in our life, we ask questions pondering why not better or smarter. This adapted article could help find answers to those questions.

Romance / True Love Is Hard: Ash Wednesday + Valentine’s Day 2018 by ivoryfile: 10:29pm On Feb 14, 2018
Christians are in for a strange beginning to Lent this year as we celebrate both Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday, concurrently, for the first time since the end of World War II. In response, many Catholic dioceses around the globe are effectively canceling Christians’ ability to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14 by maintaining the Ash Wednesday norms of fasting from alcohol, meat and — let’s face it — fun.

The church understandably wants to sustain a healthy and holy sobriety on this ancient Christian day that marks Jesus’ journey toward the cross. But Christians should think twice about separating a celebration of romance from the solemnity of Ash Wednesday, an occasion focused on mortality. This “Ash Wednesday Valentine’s Day” gives us an opportunity to reconsider what love is and what love is not.

Religion / 4 Ways To Get Wisdom by ivoryfile: 10:54am On Feb 06, 2018
4 ways to get wisdom
What Wisdom is.

Wisdom is a capacity of the mind that allows us to understand life from God’s perspective. Throughout the book of Proverbs, Solomon encourages us to “get wisdom” (Proverbs 4:5). He says those who get wisdom love life (see 19:cool; that it’s better to get wisdom than gold (see 16:16); and that those who get wisdom find life and receive favor from the Lord (see 8:32 – 35).

Yet in Ecclesiastes 7:23–24 Solomon also makes clear that getting wisdom is a challenging process: “‘I am determined to be wise’ — but this was beyond me. Whatever exists is far off and most profound — who can discover it?”

Fortunately, Scripture provides us instruction in this area. Here are four Biblical instructions for how to get wisdom:
1. Fear God

Solomon says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (see Proverbs 9:10). But how should we fear God? Philipp Melanchthon, a collaborator of Martin Luther, discussed what it means to fear God by contrasting filial fear with servile fear. Filial fear is the type of respect and love a child has for a parent, a fear of offending the one they most adore and trust. In contrast, servile fear is the kind of fear that a prisoner has for his jailer or executioner.

As a christian, we don’t need a pastor to tell us the show is a symbol of evil and reproduces such.

So, before you tune in to watch the show or join the trend on social media, answer the questions:

What are my priorities for today?
What major thing has been accomplished?
How much have I really earned (money, yeah it all about money)?
How much have I invested in my life or care to invest in other(s) today?
How boldly can I share “my BBNAIJA” show with a decent friend or mentor (Think deep, you have one somewhere)?
What will I gain from BBNAIJA?

5 Lies Christians Tell About Money

I’ve been a financial coach in my church for several years, and I’ve seen many financial situations. I’ve learned that some people pay too little attention to their financial affairs; others too much. Some routinely budget and plan and save; others don’t. Some give generously; others withhold.

Most can offer reasons (or excuses) for their decisions. Yet often they’re acting based on misconceptions about what Scripture teaches. We need to have an accurate, comprehensive view of biblical personal finance.

To that end, here are five common misconceptions I’ve come across.
1. God cares more about my heart than what I do with my money.

Romance / Why Wives Must Read The Context Of Ephesians 5:22 by ivoryfile: 12:47pm On Jan 26, 2018
Why Wives Must Read the Context of Ephesians 5:22

“Wives, submit to your own husbands as you do to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:22).

For many, it’s a troubling or ludicrous command. Cynics quote this verse to prove that the Bible is archaic and irrelevant. A biblically illiterate Neanderthal quotes this verse to keep his wife in a subservient role, insisting her opinion has no value and her contribution to the household is limited to cooking, cleaning, and keeping herself available to his sexual whims. Christian women with husbands who are not church attenders struggle with how to respond to the idea of submission.

Instead of skipping over it, let’s put Ephesians 5:22 in context. Upon further examination, I believe you’ll discover this verse and its surrounding passages are all about empowerment for every member of the family.

Let’s begin with the nine words immediately preceding that verse. Ephesians 5:21 says quite plainly, “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” That’s pretty clear. The apostle Paul was writing to believers in the church at Ephesus and all believers everywhere. He expected all of us to have the heart of a servant and put first the needs of others.

Then after introducing the concept of submitting to one another, Paul turns his attention to the family, which is the building block of a healthy society. He gives three examples of how submission works in real life for wives, husbands, and kids. Read them for yourself:

Wives, submit to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior (Ephesians 5:22-23).

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself (Ephesians 5:25,28).

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right (Ephesians 6:1).

Men, women, and children have different needs, so Paul explains how to honor and affirm each of them differently. Children need instruction. Women need to feel cherished. Men need to lead.

Submission is all about putting the needs of other members of your family ahead of your own. But today’s culture doesn’t place a very high value on others. Selfishness, misplaced priorities, and exhaustion keep us from nurturing our own submissive hearts and we have nothing left to give to the people we love most.

Busy parents sometimes don’t have the time or energy to instruct and discipline their kids, but that’s what they need. Our kids are counting on us to teach them right from wrong.

Distracted husbands sometimes forget to do the little things (and the big things) to express love to our wives. But a husband’s sacrificial love for his bride is critical for a healthy marriage.

Exhausted wives sometimes make family decisions without any input from their husbands. She’s trying to manage a household and can’t even get his attention. He feels out of the loop and the family loses his leadership. And he loses their respect.

Can you see the immediate benefits of Ephesians chapter 5 to both a wife and husband? Some theologians call it “mutual submission.” Others don’t like that term, but it’s a pretty accurate paraphrase of how the Bible describes a successful marriage. He feels respected. She feels loved. Both are looking for the best in each other and looking out for each other.

So next time you hear someone misquote Ephesians 5:22, you are now equipped to get in his or her face and say, “You know, I think you’re taking that verse out of context. Have you even read that complete passage of the Bible?”

Takeaway

Any discussion about mutual submission must include the mandate of Genesis 2:24, “And they become one flesh.” When you’re looking out for your spouse, you’re really looking out for yourself. And vice versa.

“There is nothing more admirable than two people who see eye-to-eye keeping house as man and wife, confounding their enemies, and delighting their friends.”

—Homer (9th Century BC)

Religion / 3 Biblical Examples Of Resolving Conflict In Your Life by ivoryfile: 1:49pm On Jan 24, 2018
There are biblical ways to resolve conflict so here are 4 great examples of how conflict can be achieved.
Abraham and Lot

“Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen” (Gen 13:cool.

Abraham was one of the most humble men on earth, but Lot, not so much. Both Abram (later, changed to Abraham) and Lot’s herds grew very large and it wasn’t long before conflict erupted between Abraham and Lot’s men. It begins where we read that “Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold” (Gen 13:2), but “Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together; for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together, and there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were dwelling in the land” (Gen 13:5-7).

Romance / The Biggest (and Most Surprising) Threat To Your Marriage by ivoryfile: 10:34am On Jan 21, 2018
When we begin our life together, we sometimes imagine that the right choices will be obvious. Enemies of our relationship will loom large and ugly in the distance, and opportunities to express our affection will announce themselves with neon lights in our faces.

But if you’ve been married for more than five minutes, you’ve probably discovered that this isn’t true. The true enemies of marriage don’t always come with clear warnings and easy names, like infidelity or mother-in-law. They’re often more subtle. Things like canceling dates, losing our creative bent, leaving hard things unsaid, or pretending that we can let our relationship stagnate without drifting away from each other – these are the real traps.

We have a tendency to overinflate the importance of big things. In some ways, we’re trained to expect love to manifest itself in sweeping promises and grandiose gestures – and the enemies of love to emerge with scales. We ingest cartoonish love at a young age and equate falling in love with a rescue from a tower or a daring lunge into the path of danger. At the altar we swear that we’ll accomplish a whole host of noble-sounding things. We employ big-concept words like honor and cherish with no chance of knowing what they’ll mean next week, unless it involves scaling a tower over a fire-breathing dragon, in which case we’ll be ready.

We see this in our faith, too, sometimes. We debate the ranks of callings, like motherhood or missions, and ignore the people in our pews who fill their days with understated faithfulness. We kowtow to public leaders and super-Christians instead of honoring those who quietly bring life to their corners of the world. “Greater love has no one than this,” said the Lord, “that one lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). But since he didn’t add, “And pick up your socks,” we forget that love means little things, too.

Sacrifice and bravery still serve as important expressions of love, but instead of relegating them to fairy tales and Braveheart, we need to recognize that we face opportunities every day to exhibit those very qualities. Some of us can point to specific days when we turned our marriages around, laid ourselves on the line, or accomplished something worthy of being passed on through legend. Instead, marriages are made of a million defining moments, many of which slip past without our notice.
