In the early middle ages, various arguments arose out of skepticism within Christendom.

The development of science in intellectual areas such as medicine, psychology, sociology, anthropology and so on awakened many to become conscious of many unchallenged notions that religion has made them believe. Scientific discoveries proved to be more verifiable based on the empirical evidences attached to its claims. Certain claims in the Bible such as the movement of the sun around the earth was proved to be incorrect.
Does God truly exist? If he does, how can we prove his existence? What is evil? Is there such a thing as miracle?

These type of questions were the questions that the church faced that lead to what later became known as theistic hypothesis.

The need for the church to give answers to this questions became not only necessary but also pertinent. Church men such as St. Thomas Aquinas, Arch Deacon William Parley, St Anselm rose up to the occasion and gave answers to the critics with different philosophical arguments.



Today, in Nigeria, the church has come under serious scrutiny once again. But this time, it’s not about the existence of God or the reason why there is evil in the world, it is about the role of the church in the development of the society and the impacts it should have on its members.
An ongoing debate on social media is about tithing. Why should Christians pay tithe? Is the tithe being paid used for the right purposes as stated in the scripture? This and many more questions have been asked and are equally begging for answers.
This post is an attempt to draw the attention of Christians who understand the scripture to give answers to these questions.

This weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to speak at the ReTHINK Student Apologetics Conference (there are more of these conferences coming—be sure to check out the link and learn about them!). I always enjoy talking to parents after speaking and this weekend was no exception. One thing I realized this time was that at every event where I’ve spoken in the last couple of years, there have been parents who share with me afterward that their child has recently said they no longer believe in God. Sometimes the kids are very young, other times they’re well into their adult years. But the question parents bring to me is always the same: “What should I say to them?”

After having a couple of long conversations with parents about this over the weekend, I wanted to write this post for others who may be struggling with the same thing. While this is, of course, a complex topic, these are 10 of the most important things I think you can say to a child of any age when they say they don’t believe in God anymore. For what it’s worth, this isn’t some kind of theoretical exercise for me. One of my own young kids periodically struggles with this because God can’t be physically seen. We have several of these conversations regularly.

1. “Thank you for sharing this with me.”

There’s no doubt it sends panic into a Christian parent’s heart to hear the words, “I don’t believe in God anymore” or “I’m not sure if I believe in God anymore.” But how we respond to our child at a time of spiritual crisis (whether they consider it a crisis or not) is critical. If our reaction is fearful, angry, panicked or condemning, we quickly let our kids know that expressing their doubts is not OK. As parents, we need to be the safest place in our children’s lives to have conversations about God or they’ll find another place to go—likely a place where you wouldn’t want to find them.

Simply saying, “Thank you for sharing this with me” lets them know you are happy they came to you, that you want to talk with them about their feelings, and that expressing doubt in your home is welcome. To be clear, that doesn’t imply you’re happy about the doubt itself, but that you’re happy to be a safe place for these conversations.

1. IT’S GOING TO BE AWKWARD AT THE ALTAR.

Many people seem terrified of kissing their partner on a stage in front of their friends and family. Perhaps they have visions of those YouTube first-kiss couples who only make YouTube because they’re just that bad. That’s not normal. If you’ve watched Gone With the Wind once, you can pull off a decent kiss on a stage.

There will always be nerves at a wedding, but if you really know and love the people you invited, there’s nothing to be afraid of. You aren’t up there to impress people. You’re up there to be a testimony to God’s love, Jesus’ grace, and the unending covenant of marriage – which, by the way, is based on sacrifice. Saving your kiss is a sacrifice. Like I mentioned in my own story, we don’t save kisses because a church told us to do so. Only choose to do it out of a desire to maintain holiness in your relationship.

If that was your motive, there is no such thing as ‘awkward’. And if you are still terrified, talk about it with your fiance.


2. IT’S GOING TO BE AWKWARD IN THE BEDROOM.

I have met couples who made kissing a regular part of their relationship, but their wedding night was as awkward as all get out. Kissing makes no difference in how your wedding night goes: If you’re an awkward person, you’re going to be awkward no matter what.

What happens the next moment after you die? It depends upon whether you are a believer or an unbeliever, and the differences are great.
An Appointment with Death

Every one of us has an appointment we must keep, even after birth, we’re on our way to death, but the problem is, we don’t always know when that appointment is. I am speaking about Hebrews 9:27 which says that “just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” We know that we have a day appointed to us for the day of our death, and we also know that judgment comes after death, but in a sense, if we have repented and trusted in Christ, our judgment has already occurred, and that’s in Christ Jesus Who took the wrath of God that we deserved. When we trust in Christ, we instantly receive eternal life. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this” (John 11:25-26)? Solomon understood how things work, writing, there is “a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted” (Eccl 3:2), so the fact that there is a time for us to be born but also a time for us to die is Scriptural. What we don’t know is when that day will be, but we know it is coming, or if Christ returns before we pass from this earth, we won’t have to worry about death anymore (Rev 21:4), however, “we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil” (2nd Cor 5:10).
After Death

One group of scientists have actually addressed the question of what happens after death, but their answer is so fluid that it’s like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall…
