PENGASSAN enforces Dangote Refinery shutdown

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, implemented the shutdown of the Dangote Refinery plant on Sunday.

This was contained in an update on the striking union’s action against Dangote Refinery over mass sacking.

The union said its members have shut all oil installations nationwide.

It noted that the refinery plant is 100 per cent shut down; fertiliser plant train two is also 100 per cent shut, with train one running at 60 per cent capacity.

The union added that the diesel plant is still running at the moment. However, the development has not been confirmed by Dangote Refinery.

The implication is that crude and gas supply to the refinery have been disrupted.

Recall that in a statement on Saturday, Dangote Refinery described the PENGASSAN directive as economic sabotage.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission on Sunday urged Dangote Refinery and PENGASSAN to engage in dialogue to resolve the rift.

The dispute between Dangote Refinery and PENGASSAN started after the former sacked over 800 workers for belonging to the union.

Residents said the assailants stormed the agrarian town in large numbers in the early hours of Sunday, engaging the vigilantes in a fierce confrontation.

At least 10 members of local vigilante groups, including forest guards, have been killed, and five others abducted after terrorists suspected to be armed bandits launched an attack on Oke-Ode community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Residents said the assailants stormed the agrarian town in large numbers in the early hours of Sunday, engaging the vigilantes in a fierce confrontation.

SaharaReporters learnt that the vigilantes, who have long served as the first line of defence for rural communities in the absence of a consistent military presence, were reportedly overpowered by the attackers.

A video obtained by SaharaReporters shows several lifeless bodies lying in pools of blood as grieving family members and sympathisers gathered around them in anguish.

A source in the area described the situation as “terrible,” lamenting the sudden withdrawal of Nigerian soldiers who had previously been stationed nearby.

“We don’t know why they withdrew the soldiers. Now our people are exposed. We learnt that 10 people were killed and five were kidnapped. The situation is now terrible,” the source said.

The incident has heightened fear among villagers who rely heavily on vigilante groups for security in the face of recurring bandit attacks in Kwara South and North of the state.

Confirming the attack, the press secretary to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Rafiu Ajakaye, described the killings as devastating. Writing in a WhatsApp group, he said the situation is devastating beyond words.

"This is sad. Devastating beyond words. Pls be patient. It could have been worse without the effort of the forest guards. Three guards died, one got injured. Many of the attackers also died," he said.

Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that bandits had abducted a local businessman, Suleiman Ndana, during a midnight raid on the Tsaragi community in the Edu Local Government Area of the state.

The attack occurred around midnight when the gunmen stormed the area, targeting Ndana, who recently built a new fuel station in Yana Kokonna, Tsaragi.

Residents said the attackers operated for several minutes before whisking him away to an unknown destination. His abduction has since thrown the community into fear and uncertainty.

Bandits have abducted a local businessman, Suleiman Ndana, during a midnight raid on Tsaragi community in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The latest attack adds to growing concerns over insecurity in Edu Local Government and other parts of Kwara State, where residents have repeatedly called on security agencies to strengthen surveillance and protection in vulnerable rural communities.

Also, last Friday morning, bandits attacked two brothers working on their farmland in Lema community, in the Edu Local Government Area of the state.

One of the victims was killed on the spot, while the other sustained severe, life-threatening injuries.

According to reports by Nupeko TV, the assailants stormed the farmland, located just a short distance from the main settlement.

The injured survivor was taken to the hospital for emergency medical care.

Also, last Friday, SaharaReporters reported that troops of the Nigerian Army had killed a suspected arms courier who was transporting assault rifles into a Kwara State community and recovered a large cache of weapons hidden inside a sack of charcoal.

According to a military statement obtained by SaharaReporters, the operation was carried out by troops of 22 Armoured Brigade under Operation Park Strike V during a snap checkpoint along the Share–Gbugbu Road in Edu Local Government Area on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

Acting on what was described as “credible intelligence,” soldiers intercepted a Volkswagen Golf 3 with registration number Bayelsa SAG-133 XA. The driver, who attempted to escape, was immediately neutralised by troops.

A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered five AK-47 rifles and three magazines stuffed inside a charcoal sack to evade detection.

Military sources revealed that the suspected courier had been tracked from Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State, a notorious hub for banditry and arms trafficking, before being intercepted in Kwara at about 8:30 a.m.

The attack, which happened on Friday morning, sent a shock wave across the community.

Witnesses said the assailants stormed the mosque and opened fire indiscriminately, killing five people on the spot and leaving many others with gunshot wounds.

A resident, who spoke under condition of anonymity for security reasons, said the attackers also abducted an unspecified number of worshippers before fleeing into nearby forest.

CrimePolice To Arraign Lagos NURTW Leader, Shameleon, For Murder On Friday by iwaeda(op): 8:21am On Sep 24, 2025
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that it will on Friday arraign a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Shamsideen Adio, known as Shameleon, on Friday over the alleged killing of a dispatch rider in Lagos Island.

SaharaReporters had reported that Adio, 55, was arrested after he allegedly descended on the victim during a scuffle on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, on September 17, 2025.

According to eyewitnesses, the assault began when the rider allegedly blocked Adio’s vehicle.

The situation quickly escalated, with Adio joined by friends and colleagues, who reportedly battered the rider mercilessly, sparking widespread outrage.

In a video seen by SaharaReporters, Adio was seen punching the poor rider repeatedly alongside his friend, while a crowd of onlookers watched without intervening.

According to eyewitnesses, the rider was struck repeatedly with a helmet and fists until he collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from injuries sustained in the attack.

Confirming the development, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Bababseyi Oluseyi, said the suspect is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti-Yaba and would be arraigned on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly has also waded into the matter, insisting that the suspect and his accomplices must be prosecuted.

SaharaReporters reported that the Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Adewale Adedeji, condemned the incident, describing it as “an act that must be condemned by every well-meaning Nigerian.”

“As the Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation at the Lagos State House of Assembly, I stand to say that the action by Shamsideen is not only barbaric, shameful, inhuman, and heartbreaking; he must be prosecuted to a logical end by the police,” Adedeji stated.

He also charged the leadership of the NURTW in Lagos State, led by Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo, to suspend Adio and distance the union from the “lawless behavior” while investigations continue.

“The NURTW to which Shamsideen belongs should be a professional union and does not deserve members who are lawless, do not see their fellow beings as humans enough, or who think that their actions should be overlooked,” he said.
