Health / Why Do More Men Than Women Die Of Skin Cancer? by Iwhy(m): 8:40am On Nov 17, 2017
About twice as many men as women will die from melanoma this year. The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that 6,380 men and 3,350 women will die from melanoma in 2017.
Men don’t use sunscreen regularly

Exposure to the sun’s UV rays – both long wave ultraviolet A (UVA) and short wave ultraviolet B (UVB) — are known to cause skin cancer. About 86 percent of all melanomas are attributed to sun exposure, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Protecting your skin from the sun’s rays means wearing sunscreen everyday and reapplying it every few hours, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding spending long periods of time in the sun between the hours of 10:00 a.m.and 4:00 p.m.

But only 14.3 percent of men say they regularly use sunscreen on their face and other exposed skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. This might be due, in part, to advertisements and educational information about the importance of sunscreen typically being aimed toward women more than men.

Men also often spend more time outdoors. The U.S. Labor Department shows that men, on an average, spend one hour a day more than women on sports and leisure activities. If these activities are outdoors, such as fishing, hiking, or playing golf, they are spending seven more hours per week out in the sun. The cumulative effects of sun exposure increase their risk of developing skin cancer.
Men don’t go to the doctor unless absolutely necessary

Too often, men ignore signs of skin cancer. They don’t see visiting a doctor or dermatologist as a priority in their life. Three times more men than women indicated they hadn’t seen a doctor over the last year, according to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. Many men wait as long as possible, even if they have a lesion or other suspicious signs of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is treatable when detected and treated early. But that means doing skin self-checks on a regular basis, seeing a dermatologist on an annual basis, and more often, if there are suspicious moles or ones that change shape or color. You should contact your doctor immediately if you have sores or lesions that don’t heal. Without treatment, skin cancer can spread to the lymph nodes and beyond, making it deadly or more difficult to treat.
There might be biological differences

A report published in Journal of Clinical Oncology in 2012 points to possible biological differences between men and women when it comes to skin cancer. Women have a greater chance of survival. Not only did researchers note that the cancer was less likely to spread to lymph nodes in women, when it did, it took longer. But even when the cancer was found in lymph nodes, women still had a higher survival and cure rate.

It’s impossible to do anything about the biological differences; however, regular check-ups not only allow doctors to look for suspicious skin lesions, they also raise awareness. Men who regularly visit the doctor may be more aware of warning signs and be vigilant about completing self-skin checks.
Politics / Re: Yul Edochie Reacts To Being Left Out Of Anambra 2017 Gubernatorial Debate by Iwhy(m): 5:57pm On Nov 13, 2017
thou am not a fan of Nigerian way of politics but one thing i am damn sure of is the fact that every one has a right to vote and be voted for. the Nigerian law (the one that only works for those with no money in their pockets) state that all men are equal.

if a so called leading media house is calling for a gubernatorial debate, then they is no reason to sideline ANY of the governorship aspirant no matter the political affiliation. if you feel you cant accommodate them all in your studio or what have you then you better don't call any.

i hear people say those called were the big wigs..... and i laff (because this is only in Nigerian politics). in the last concluded US presidential election, Hillary Clinton was the BIG wig but she lost at the end.

in my own opinion, channels Tv just proved to the nigerian people owe an unreserved apology to the people of Anambra state and all the uninvited governorship candidates that were not invited. my reason is simple, they gave the ones invited an undue advantage (to face the world and declare their fake manifesto) over the others (even thou we know most of them are just wasting money they should have used to develop their immediate communities).
Education / Shocks As El-rufai Releases Teachers’ Test Papers [PHOTOS] by Iwhy(m): 8:41am On Nov 10, 2017
Governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai oF Kaduna State, Thursday, released some of the test papers of teachers in the state.

The governor took to tweeter @GovKaduna, the official account of governor of Kaduna State, to roll out some of the test papers written by teachers in the state.

The teachers had embarked on protest on Wednesday, destroying vehicles and vandalising offices of government, over the move by the governor to sack some of them that performed badly in the examinations conducted for them by the state government.

But on Thursday, Governor el-Rufai released in batches on his twitter handle, some of the papers used by the teachers in the test.

The teachers were tested in English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Current Affairs, among others.

While displaying some of the examination sheets, he said: “Here are some of the primary 4 competency test scripts conducted for primary school teachers in Kaduna State. The future of our children must never be politicised.”

In another post on his twitter handle, Governor el-Rufai said: “Here are some of the primary 4 competency test scripts conducted for primary school teachers in Kaduna State. Would you allow someone like this teach your child?”

He lamented that the affected teachers were meant to teach pupils Mathematics and English Language.

“We are putting these out in the court of public opinion for Nigerians to make their verdict. Here are some of the primary 4 competency test scripts conducted for primary school teachers in Kaduna State,” he said in another tweet.

“As at close of work yesterday, the State Universal Basic Education Board received in total, 18,550 applications from prospective teachers. Recruitment is still on.

“Issuance of temporary appointment letters to successful applicants to commence on 25/01/2018,” he tweeted.

A close look at one of the results released by the governor, showed that the teacher with candidate number 2839 was asked to explain two qualities of teaching aids, his answer: ‘stick is a teaching , book is a teaching aids.’

The teacher was in another question asked to explain two importance of a Lesson Plan to teacher: his reply; ‘You geden time teacher in the pupils in the class very will’ (sic).

Politics / Fashola Responds To Dino Melaye’s Corruption Allegations by Iwhy(m): 8:28am On Nov 10, 2017
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has condemned what he described as ‘unverified allegations’ raised by a senator against his ministry.

Dino Melaye, Kogi-APC, had first as a petition, and later as a motion, accused the ministry of mismanaging funds to the tune of $35 million and another attempt to break away with $350 million Eurobond.

Reacting to these allegations, the minister in a statement he personally signed said he will cooperate with the Senate as he and his staff has done nothing wrong in management of the said fund.

“With all emphasis, I state that there is no factual basis for the allegations,” he said. “The ministry, my staff and I have done nothing wrong and we will collaborate fully with the investigating committee when called upon.”

Mr. Fashola noted that he was not a minister in 2013, the period for which the senator claimed the funds were received. He also said the responsibility of managing government debt like Eurobond is that of the Debt Management Office and not his ministry.

He alleged an ulterior motive in the presentation of the allegations as the senator made different allegations while raising it as a petition and later during its presentation as a motion.

“The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) had on Monday, 6th November 2017 issued a statement on the front page of The Nation Newspaper explaining that the money was not missing, stating also that the $350 million had been invested and that interest had even accrued on the money.

“If there was no ulterior motive for the allegation, this was enough reason for a reconsideration of the presentation of the motion on the floor of the Senate on the 8th of November 2017.

“But the story seemed to have changed from “missing money” last week, to a “desperate attempt to retrieve the money “, this week.”

For the Afam Fast Power project which the senator accused his ministry of spending $35 milion without appropriation and feasibility study, Mr. Fashola explained that it was kickstarted as an investment by a U.S. firm, General Electric, to boost power supply in the country.

“They offered to do this by providing Nigeria with mobile turbines of 600MW if we could find a location with Gas and Transmission evacuation infrastructure. The Afam Power Station fitted because it had transmission and evacuation facilities but all its turbines had been virtually run down.

“The investment was contingent on paying $27,990,000 million which was 15% of 8 (eight) units of 30MW turbines each totalling 240MW valued at about $186,600,000:00.

“This payment of $27.9m was made without breaching any law.

“At this moment, the turbines have arrived Nigeria and currently at the Onne Port. This is verifiable just as works are on going on the site – civil and engineering – preparing to receive the turbines , and install other equipment already at site.”

Describing it as the fastest power project when delivered, the minister said the project will add 240MW to the grid when commissioned.

He added that investors do not require parliamentary approval to invest in the country while cautioning the Senate against pushing out unverified information as it poses “an imminent threat to our investment climate.”

HOW IT STARTED

News of the alleged fraud first emanated from the floor of the Senate on November 2 when Mr. Melaye alleged that the ministry squandered $385 million on projects not appropriated in the budget between 2013 and 2016.
Dino Melaye, Senator representing Kogi West.

He said that $300 million of the fund was given to the Nigerian Electricity Bulk Trading Company, NBET, while another $35 million was paid to General Electric and some others.

“In July 2013, the federal government raised $1 billion from Eurobond issue. From the proceeds, $350 million was given to NBET in 2014.

“Mr. President, this money was stolen in installments. As I speak to you, sometimes last year again, the Ministry of Power came up with a term they call fast power. This indigested project is supposed to build new generating plants to add power to our grid. The Ministry has spent so far $35 million on the Afam fast power project that has no appropriation or feasibility studies,” he said.

However, presenting it as a motion on Wednesday, November 8, the senator said the ministry had been making frantic efforts to secure the release of $350 million domiciled in the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority to finance electricity projects.

He alleged that the ministry is mounting pressure on NBET to retrieve this fund ($350 million) and divert same to fund the Fast Power Projects.

The Senate mandated its committees on power and public accounts to invite Mr. Fashola, to render an account of funds spent on the project.

Responding, the Chairman of the market union, Chief Chukwunonso Nnetu, thanked the Governor for coming to their rescue and prayed God to repay him, just as he promised that his members would reciprocate the gesture with their votes on November 18.

Politics / 2019: Buhari Deserves Second Term – Rev. Abidoye by Iwhy(m): 5:38pm On Nov 09, 2017
The Spiritual father and Chairman, Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, Ayo Ni O, Most Rev. Samuel Abidoye has opined that President Muhammadu Buhari deserves second term.

Abidoye stated that Buhari’s administration has shown great commitment to the recovery of looted funds and fight against graft.

The cleric spoke on Thursday during the 77th annual convention/ conference of the church along Ilorin-Ibadan Expressway.

He said though Buhari was sick, he has recovered and would perform better if given the second term.

“As far as I’m concerned, President Buhari is doing very good, what he has been doing since he assumed office with particular reference to the recovery of the nation’s stolen money had never been done by any government in this country before.

“In view of this, he needs more time to do this work very well in order to make Nigeria great again, so Nigerians should consider him for second term in office, let’s give him time to do more,” said the spiritual father.

Abidoye, however, urged the Federal government to use the recovered loots for youth empowerment programme.

According to him, this would reduce the high rate of unemployment in the country and secure the nation’s future.

He advised Nigerians to support Buhari’s administration in its effort at implementing people oriented programmes.
