The National Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Emmanuel Okeh, has said that the corp has refunded a total of N90m to jobseekers who were defrauded by recruitment scammers. Okeh also said that the leadership of the NSCDC have also arrested not less 600 persons involved in defrauding unsuspecting jobseekers with fake recruitment exercises purported for the various services in the country from 2008. He urged Nigerians to note that recruitment into the NSCDC would not involve payment of money, purchase of forms by applicants or direction of applications to any website to make payments. He stressed that the Corp would advertise in some media houses at the appropriate time whenever the time came for recruitment. The Civil Defence Spokesman who is also the Secretary of the Spokespersons of Security and Response Agencies, made the comment while speaking on the activities of the corp in a media interactive forum organised by the Coordinator of I- Nigerian, Mr. Ada Apiafi in Abuja on Wednesday. He said, “The issue of employment racketeering has been a thing of worry to the Corp because everyday we keep hearing about people calling; myself at least, before coming here this morning at least I have received about 15 calls from people: ‘I learnt they say they are recruiting, I learnt your form is on line, Sir when can I bring my cv?’ “Even some of our colleagues come to find out that they call them that they should bring their candidates and they should come and pay money into a specific account. “Now from 2008, when the issue of racketeering started, not just in the service alone, the ones in the name of immigration, Customs, Police and other agencies, including private organisation that we investigated, we have had not less than 6,000 persons that we have arrested and so far we have refunded money from those who are involved to the tune of N90 million which we have given to Nigerians that were defrauded. “Now our cry all the time and what we keep telling and informing Nigerians is that recruitment into services in Nigeria is not by payment of money by anybody. Each service has its own mode of recruitment. “The NSCDC has never been involved in any online recruitment, and we have no intention of asking anybody to pay money. We don’t sell forms and we don’t open website for people to go and pay online. When it is the appropriate time for recruitment, the various media houses that are to be used to inform them would carry out the recruitment process,” he said. He recalled the arrest of one Michael in Abuja who ran a syndicate that specialises in defrauding unsuspecting job seekers and traced the sum of N495m and another $950,000 to his account. He said that the suspect was being investigated for other offences especially money laundering in view of the funds traced into his Dollar account. Okeh said that the fraudster who was said to have opened 50 accounts in different names had been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further investigation and prosecution. The NSCDC Spokesman also said that the organisation arrested a total of 380 oil pipeline and critical infrastructure vandals from January to July 2014. http://www.punchng.com/news/nscdc-refunds-n90m-to-defrauded-jobseekers/ |
