Most people living with HIV (PLHIV) are even stronger than some of those living without it because of the Anti retroviral drugs they take. I guess your mum is down with Advanced HIV Disease (AHD). Her CD4 is probably less than 200 cells/mm^3. The underlying cause of AHD is either Creptococcal Meningitis and/or TB. The hospital will take care of that. Your mum will be fine. I work in a PEPFAR supported HIV program in Nigeria. HIV care, support and treatment is free. Just visit any supported health facility. Ones your parents achieve virological suppression, they are good to go, and can leave till their old age. This is only if they continue to be virally suppressed. Please reach me on 08061506031

Good day nairalanders, thank God this site is a faceless forum... Few weeks ago my dad told me he is HIV positive, when he told me I was disappointed but I made sure I didn't show it and I encouraged him... Him and my mother has been sick for a while and I certainly know he has transferred it to my mum.... My dad was very promiscuous when he was younger even after he married my mom he was still promiscuous. I am the only child and I have been footing the bills for their medical cares I am just 26 years old and I have spent so much and there is more spending still to come.... My father only told me, my mother is not aware of her health status all she thinks it's just a normal sickness happening to her. I have no one to talk to, I don't trust any friends because I believe when I tell them, they will certainly spread the news and you know the stigmatization against HIV patients, it's not good... I am frustrated, depressed and financially drained, sometimes I stay in my room and cry.... To avoid thinking, sometimes I just drink some alcohol... This issue has been in my heart for several weeks I just had to put it on Nairaland to ease my pain. My father just called me today that my mom has been admitted to the hospital, she was too weak to even walk.... Another spending and I am running out of cash, don't know what to do anymore. It wouldn't be this severe if they found out earlier, it's almost late. May God help me and my parents.

The Akwa Ibom government has blamed the high rate of HIV/AIDS recorded in the state, on the influx of visitors.This came after the Nigerian HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS), revealed that the state has the highest prevalence rate of HIV in the country. The report which was released on March 14, in Abuja revealed that 5.5 per cent of the people living with HIV in Nigeria are in Akwa Ibom State, followed by Benue State, which has about 5.3 per cent prevalence rate.

However the Akwa Ibom government who reacted to the report, blamed the high rate of HIV/AIDS on influx of visitors coming for various reasons. The state's health commissioner Dominic Ukpong, who briefed reporters in Uyo on the state government reaction to the survey findings, said;

“The location of the state with a large coastal front of 129 Km stretching from Ikot Abasi to Oron, an airport, good road network, peaceful atmosphere, friendly disposition of our people, good cuisines and fast developing economy have made our state the destination of choice for both national and international visitors. All these are not without attendant public health consequences, like transmission of communicable diseases which HIV/AIDS cannot be excluded.
