Among the different ethnic groups in Nigeria, the Igbo are
without a doubt, one of the most remarkable. So remarkable,
indeed, that some have even traced their ancestry to biblical
Israel, as the far-flung descendants of Jacob, the Jewish
patriarch. Gad, Jacob’s seventh son, is said to have had
three sons who settled in South-eastern Nigeria.
These sons; Eri, Arodi and Areli, are believed to have
fathered clans in Igbo-land and to have founded such Igbo
towns as Aguleri, Arochukwu, Owerri and Umuleri.
Igbo Genius.
Even the bitterest adversaries of the Igbo cannot but admit
that, as a people, they are very resourceful and ingenious.
Indeed, this has often been the cause of their envy and
dislike by others. However, more enlightened non-Igbo
Nigerians see this as a cause for celebration. While today,
the centre-point of Nigeria’s manufacturing is situated in
the Lagos/Ogun axis, there is no doubt that the real
locomotive of Nigeria’s indigenous industrialization lies
farther afield in Aba and in the mushrooming cottage-
industries of the Igbo heartland.
Igbo-menIn one of the paradoxes of Nigerian history, the
terrible civil war provoked homespun industrialization in the
South-East. Military blockade left the Igbo with little
alternative than to be inventive in a hurry. While Nigeria as a
nation failed woefully to harness this profitably after the
war, it has nevertheless ensured that the Igbo are at the
forefront of Nigeria’s economic development today.
Indeed, the way we disregard “made in Aba” today is the
same way we disregarded “made in Japan” yesterday. For
those of us who believe against the odds that Nigeria is the
China of tomorrow, we equally recognize that the ingenuity
of the Igbo is an indelible part of the actualization of that
manifest destiny.
Hall of Fame.
The Igbo have been a great credit to Nigeria. They have
given us a great number of our favourite sons, including
international statesman Nnamdi Azikiwe; military leader
Odumegwu Ojukwu; regional leader Michael Okpara; vice-
president Alex Ekwueme; mathematical genius Chike Obi;
literary icon Chinua Achebe; world-class economist Pius
Okigbo; world boxing champion Dick Tiger; international
statesman Emeka Anyaoku; and world-class artist Ben
Enwonwu. Permit me to include in this illustrious list even
some of my very good Igbo friends: Pat Utomi, Ojo Madueke,
Olisa Agbakoba, Joy Ogwu, and Stanley Macebuh.
Let us get one thing straight: Nigeria would be a much
poorer country without the Igbo.
Indeed, Nigeria would not be Nigeria without them. Can you
imagine the Super Eagles without the Igbo? Not likely! Who
can forget Nwankwo Kanu, Jay Kay Okocha and our very own
Emmanuel Amuneke? Can you imagine Nollywood without the
Igbo? Impossible! Just think of Stella Damascus-Aboderin;
Rita Dominic and Mike Ezuruonye.
And then there are the diaspora Igbo who many are unaware
are of Igbo descent, including concert singer and actor Paul
Robeson; Oscar award-winner Forest Whitaker; mega-pastor
T.D. Jakes; Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu; and BAFTA
actor award-winner Chiwetel Ejiofor.
You may well wonder why I have found it necessary to
present this small litany of Igbo who-is-who. I think it is
important to emphasise how the Igbo have been very vital to
the Nigerian project. They have more than represented
Nigeria creditably in virtually all walks of life. This makes it
all the more absurd that this same people have been
consistently denied the position of executive president of the
country in all but six months of Nigeria’s 54 year history.
Civil-war legacy
Of course, a major reason for this was the 1967-1970 civil-
war which had the Igbo on the losing side. But that was over
40 years ago. If there is really to be “no victor, no
vanquished” in anything more than mere rhetoric, then the
rehabilitation of the Igbo back into post civil-war Nigeria will
not be complete until an Igbo man finally becomes president
of the country.
That imperative should be of interest to every Nigerian
nationalist, committed to the creation of one Nigeria where
everyone has a deep sense of belonging. The problem,
however, is that the Igbo themselves seem to be their own
worst enemies in this regard. They appear to be doing their
very best to ensure that this inevitable eventuality continues
to be denied and delayed.
The Igbo need to forgive Nigerians. No one who lived through
the horrors that precipitated the secession of Biafra and led
to the civil-war cannot but admit that the Igbo were abused
and maltreated in one of the worst pogroms ever. It was not
just that they were senselessly massacred in their own
country; it was that they were butchered.
I remember vividly gory pictures of scores and scores of the
Igbo with hands chopped up and with legs amputated. And
then there were the ravages of the three-year civil-war
itself, resulting in the death of millions of Igbo; many
through starvation and attrition.
The end of the war brought no respite, as the Igbo were
pauperized by fiscal decrees that wiped out their savings and
their properties were blatantly sequestered by opportunists.
All this is more than enough to destroy the spirit of any
group of people. But God has been on the side of the Igbo.
It is a testament to their resilience that, in spite of this
terrible affliction, they have survived, bounced back and
have even triumphed in Nigeria. Forty years have now gone
by. The Igbo may never forget what happened to them and,
indeed, should never forget. But it is past time for them to
forgive.
We Are Sorry.
This is one voice in the Nigerian wilderness saying to the Igbo
from the depth of his heart: we are sorry. We are sorry for
the way we mistreated you. We are sorry for the way we
abused you. We are sorry for starving your children to death.
We are sorry for killing your loved ones. We are sorry for
stealing your properties.
We are sorry for making you feel unwanted in your own
country. Please forgive us. It is time to forgive us. It is way
past time for the Igbo to forgive Nigerians. We beg you in
the name of God.
There was a civil war in the United States, but the defeated
South rose from the ashes. Five of the last nine presidents
of the United States have been from the South, including
Jimmy Carter from Georgia, George Bush from Texas and Bill
Clinton from Arkansas. The time is overdue for an Igbo
president of Nigeria, but it is not going to happen as long as
the Igbo continue to hold a grudge against Nigeria and
Nigerians.
There is no question about it: the Igbos cannot elect a
president of Nigeria on their own. To do so, they have to join
forces with others. They have to form alliances with people
from other parts of Nigeria. That is not going to happen as
long as the Igbo continue to bear a grudge against practically
everybody else.
The Igbo have a gripe against virtually all the people they
need. They have this tendency to antagonise their possible
alliance partners. They keep dredging up the past, refusing
to let sleeping dogs lie. Until they drop these gripes, they are
not likely to realise their dreams.
Demonising Yorubas
For example, the Igbo have this tendency to demonise the
Yorubas. It is alarming when reading the Vanguard blogs
today to see the animosity often expressed between Igbo and
Yoruba contributors. The hatred is most unhealthy. Insults
are traded with abandon. What is the point of this? For how
long will the Igbo demand emotional retribution from every
Yoruba for the betrayal of Awolowo? Most of the
contributors were not even born when the civil-war took place
more than a generation ago.
There is now even transferred aggression against Babatunde
Fashola, who made the blunder of repatriating some
destitute Igbo from Lagos back to their home-states. The
man has apologised for the infraction. He should be forgiven.
Blunders are not the exclusive preserve of the non-Igbo. The
Igbo have made more than a few themselves and will yet
make others.
Paradoxically, the redemption of the Igbos to prominent
national office moved apace under President Obasanjo; a
Yoruba man. Recognising that Igbos are some of the most
seasoned, competent and experienced public-servants,
Obasanjo relied heavily on their expertise.
Thanks to him, we got Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala at Finance,
Charles Soludo at Central Bank, Obiageli Ezekwesili at
Education, Ndidi Okereke at the Stock Exchange, and Dora
Akunyili at NAFDAC. Indeed, Igbo statesmen came into more
prominence under Obasanjo than did Yoruba statesmen. But
for some strange reason, this does not seem to have
succeeded in assuaging the ill-feeling of the Igbos toward
the Yorubas.
Bad Politicians
Within the framework of Nigerian politics, the Igbo also have
a fundamental problem. Out of the three major ethnic groups
in Nigeria, the Igbo have by far the worst politicians. They
have no recognizable leaders, and have no discernible
strategy as to how to negotiate power at the centre. As a
result, the Igbo have tended to be short-changed at the
federal level. Traditionally, the inconsequential ministries,
such as the Ministry of Information, have been zoned to
them.
The Igbo need to work out a plan that will take them to Aso
Rock. First, they need to choose and groom a de-tribalised
leader of the Azikiwe mould who can be sold to non-Igbos.
Then, they need to give him undiluted support. At the
moment the internal politics of the Igbo militates against
this. The Igbo seem to hate themselves as much as they hate
others. They seem to fight themselves with as much venom as
they fight others. Every potential Igbo leader seems to have
more enemies within than without. This must not be allowed to
continue.
The Igbo need to help themselves in order that their friends
can help them. In this centenary of Nigeria’s amalgamation,
as we embark on the arduous process of crafting our future
through a National Conference, we salute the Igbo for their
fortitude and implore them to stake their claim in Nigeria.
Nigeria cannot survive without the Igbo. |
The Nigerian Army yesterday alerted the nation that some elders and leaders of Borno state and other States of the North East are working against the resolve by the military and other security agencies to ensure they bring the terrorists activities of Boko Haram group to an end by December this year in accordance with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive. These persons including top politicians are said to have gone to the extent of employing the services of Marabouts and other unethical means to reverse the gains made so far in the war against insurgency. Consequently, the Army warned that such elders, whose sinister machinations security agencies were aware of, risk arrest and will be dealt with in accordance with the law if caught. A statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman said, “the Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public and send a very strong and serious final warning to some prominent individuals and political groups who hail from Borno State in particular and North East generally, that there is information of plans by some highly placed individuals and political groups to undermine and scuttle the fight against terrorism and insurgency in this country. “The unscrupulous individuals and their cohorts are determined to reverse the gains made and scuttle our efforts of achieving the Presidential directive to defeat Boko Haram terrorists within 3 months. “They are enlisting the services of some Non-Governmental Organizations in this grand design. “It has come to our knowledge that they are employing all means to see that our operation does not succeed in order for them to continue to enjoy certain benefits. “It has been revealed that they are employing the services of marabouts and other unethical means in order to frustrate our efforts and the operations in addition to campaigns of calumny. “We are aware of their clandestine meetings and other diabolical efforts to achieve their nefarious aims and this will not be tolerated. “Therefore, such individuals and groups should be warned in unmistakable terms that anyone found will be dealt with accordingly. “People should place the interest of the nation above any personal gain or ambition.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/insurgency-borno-elders-sabotaging-our-efforts-army/ |
Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has warned Nigerian politicians against playing politics with the death of the late matriarch of Awolowo dynasty, Chief (Mrs) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo. Fayose, who spoke in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State when he paid a condolence visit to the Awolowo family, was accompanied by the Senator representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District, Ben Murray-Bruce. He said the deceased should not be celebrated for political reasons, advising that politicians should rather sustain her legacy and that of her late husband, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The Ekiti governor noted that visiting the Awolowos should not just be a one-off thing aimed at scoring cheap political points and making publicity stunts. Others who also paid condolence visits yesterday included former Head of Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan; prominent industrialist, Dr Oba Otudeko, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana, who was represented by the Osi Olubadan, Senator Lekan Balogun, and Ekerin Olubadan, High Chief Abimbola Ajibola. Fayose said “One thing I like to remind all politicians; it is in our way to make politics out of people’s lives, to celebrate them for political reasons. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/stop-playing-politics-with-hids-death-fayose-warns/ |
Buhari to plead with Nigerians for patience Buhari, who recalled what the regime of late General Sani Abacha did to establish the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF, however said he would plead with Nigerians for their understanding and patience even as he reiterated his commitment to restoring security. He said: “The expectation is too high and I have started nervously to explain to people that Rome was not built in a day. For this to be corrected, please, give the incoming government a chance. “Here, I will like to recall what happened during the Abacha regime which led to the emergence of PTF. The Abacha regime was a military regime and it thought that the only way was to increase the prices of petroleum products. But they were not taking Nigerians for a ride. They would have said that if Nigerians decide to riot, they have the guns and so they can have their way. “They decided to tell Nigerians that they were going to increase prices of petroleum products and the money we get, we will put aside for development. That was how PTF came. “So, this time around, under this system, to bounce back with the issue especially with the backlog of salaries which are of immediate concern to individuals and states, I think we should look for a better way to address the issue and think of how to persuade people to give us a chance to organise the economy immediately and get something to pay salaries. The people will give us a chance to stabilise the economy.” Decayed infrastructure Buhari who also lamented what he likened to destruction of social infrastructure especially in education, however, assured that his government would ensure that the country is improved in all ramifications. Buhari also thanked the governors-elect, re-echoing that the formation of APC as an offspring of the merger of the legacy parties earned them victory at the polls. He said: “The decision to merge was a good one because this helped us. At every step, there were many road blocks. During the merger, APGA and DPP wanted to come in, but we felt that if they are allowed to come in at that time, it will be used to frustrate the merger and so we asked them to stay action until after the merger. So we advised them to just be observers. “We decided that the nine major people that were leading the Legacy parties should lead us to the first major convention where the new party will then elect its new leadership. These nine people were the national chairmen, the national secretaries and the treasurers. “The next step was what earned us respect. I had thought that all INEC Commissioners were our enemies and they said, ‘no, take the documents for the registration back because you need presence in all the geopolitical zones of the country.’ There were lots of efforts by the PDP to frustrate our emergence as a party.” |

Zambia’s President Edgar Lungu collapsed on the podium while presiding over a Women’s Day celebration in Lusaka Sunday — less than two months after taking over from a leader who died in office. Lungu was rushed to a military hospital, but the presidency later issued a statement saying he had been treated for malaria and there was no need for concern. “I am feeling much better and have been told I have high levels of fatigue and should take some rest,” Lungu said in a statement presented by his press office. “There is nothing to worry about.” Lungu came to power in January after the death in office of president Michael Sata in October. Rumours that Sata was ill had circulated widely before his death, but were always denied by the government. Sata was Zambia’s second leader to die in office in six years, sparking calls for presidential aspirants to undergo medical checks to guarantee they are fit. Lungu, who fell after standing for some 20 minutes during the ceremony, is rumoured to have diabetes. Presidential spokesman Amos Chanda said doctors at the military hospital had conducted comprehensive medical checks and said Lungu’s results were good. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/zambian-president-collapses-at-ceremony/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook |
The Chibok Community in Borno on Sunday lauded President Goodluck Jonathan for sending Alhaji Mohammed Wakil, the Minister of State for Power, to reassure them of safe return of the abducted students of the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok. Wakil had last week held meeting with members of the community in Maiduguri on the orders of President Jonathan. Hajiya Hauwa Chibok, a spokesperson of the community, made the commendation in a statement in Maiduguri. “I, on behalf of Chibok women, write to thank President Goodluck Jonathan for sending one of his ministers, Mohammed Wakil, to sympathise with us and reassure us over our missing daughters. “Wakil briefed us on the security efforts being made to rescue the girls and we appreciate it. “We are from Chibok, not Damboa, and the minister met us at about 10 p.m. on Thursday morning in Maiduguri. “He was with us for two hours. We prayed together for our daughters and we prayed for the military. “On behalf of our people , we convey our appreciation for the visit. “Weprayed God to bless the efforts of our military,” she said. |

PEOPLES Democratic Party, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, PDPPCO alleged Sunday that the All Progressives Congress, APC spent N5 billion for the appearance of its Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, rtd at the Chatham House in London last Thursday, just as it described it as a jamboree and monumental failure and that the Federal Government has concluded arrangements and may soon drag General Buhari before the International Criminal Court. Addressing Journalists in Abuja Sunday, Director, Media and Publicity of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani- Kayode disclosed that the Federal Government has concluded arrangements and may soon drag General Buhari before the International Criminal Court, ICC over the 2011 Electoral violence in the country to face alleged charges of human rights abuses and criminality, just as he urged Buhari to get prepared for the trial after the elections. According to him, the government would first demystify Buhari by defeating him at the polls before dragging him to the ICC against the backdrop that it will be risky to arrest him now over the 2011 violence as it would raise dust, adding, “And after its and General Buhari’s rejection at the poll, General Buhari may have to prepare to face charges of human rights abuses and criminality filed against him before the International Criminal Court on account of the 2011 electoral violence in Nigeria. “According to the African Herald Express report on the issue published on February 20, 2015, Dutch lawyers– Prakken d’Oliveira, a Human Rights Law Firm based in Amsterdam, said it had filed a criminal complaint against General Muhammadu Buhari at the ICC. Prakken d’ Oliveira, led by Prof. Sluiter, Lawyer and Partner, is said to be acting on behalf of the Nigerian Northern Coalition for Democracy and Justice and two individual victims. “Indeed, international focus is on General Buhari for the 2011 post-election violence and we hope that he is brought to justice for the blood that was shed by his supporters in the violence of 2011; and, we hope he will not precipitate another round of violence in 2015 when he loses.” PDP noted that the Chatham House event was an arrangee designed by the APC like the purported London interview to hoodwink Nigerians and prevent the APC Presidential candidate from debating in Nigeria, just as it insisted that General Buhari must debate in Nigeria, adding that he was not originally scheduled to appear at the Chatham as it was a last minute arrangement, aimed at diverting the attention of Nigerians and the world from the fact that the trip to London was mainly to seek medical attention and care. |
Many writers have described Queeneth Hilbert as the most beautiful actress in Nigeria. Right or wrong, the model turned screen goddess is unquestionably beautiful with a touch of class about her. When I first interviewed her I felt an air of derision about her towards men but she was quick to tell me she has nothing against them although she has had her share of bad experiences with men. “ When I was trying to establish myself as a model, every man I met wanted something from me. In this country, most men you meet don’t want to do anything for you unless you are ready to offer sex. Only very few men are nice. I don’t know if it happens like that to other women but for me, it has and that doesn’t mean I have anything against men. I don’t” she says And her feelings haven’t affected her desirability to have sex with the opposite sex. “Well, you see someone and you feel this guy will be good in bed, fine, go ahead and have it. Sex is something you can have if you feel good about it. I don’t believe all those Bible stuffs about sex” she quips. |

OTTOM POT. Why am taking a swift from supporting General Buhari . Just few hours ago,Obasanjo endorsed General Buhari as the man to deliver this nation. I was personally shocked, when I heard the news. This is because,I was expecting Baba to stay at the touch line, and leave Nigerians to study his body language. But the masquerade could not control his dance in the public market. Hence he mistakenly flogged his own mother who is also a trader in the market. Nigerians,I am left with no option than to tell us that, these ex-generals and their boys are up to something. The issue at hand is not all about the presidential seat. But rather, the national cake (oil blocks). Less I forget,is it not the same Obasanjo who woke up and hand picked his puppet 2011, who eventually grew like Joseph the messiah of Egypt? Is it not the same Obj that told us 2011,that General Buhari is too old to rule this country? Is it not the same Obj that told us Buhari is a dictator? Somebody should have a rethink like me. We must understand the preacher's language before decoding his message. If Obj can take a swift and prefer General Buhari to Jonathan,a puppet he dedicated his energy and resources to win 2011 election, then as an average Nigerian,we should have a rethink and ask our leaders what is so special in Aso Rock. LETTER TO BUHARI Sir, let us examine your service records. I consider your generation a very privileged one, indeed. In 1975 at the age of 33, you were appointed the Military Governor of the North-Eastern State, present day Borno & Yobe states. In 1976 at the age of 34 you became the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources. In 1978 at the age of 36 you became the Chairman of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Today the reverse is the case. Most Nigerians at age of 35 are still unemployed and still living with parents. Many are still not married. During your time you were already Governor at this age. One major reason for this unfortunate turn of events is that many elders like you have refused to voluntarily handover the baton to the next generation. Life should be a relay race where one runs his race and hands over to the next. In Nigeria many elders like you have run their races and are still holding on tenaciously to the baton. But Sir, I have an important question here for you. The question is simple, MUST YOU SERVE NIGERIA AS A PRESIDENT ONLY? IS THERE NO OTHER CAPACITY YOU CAN SERVE US EXCEPT THE PRESIDENCY? It is very erroneous to imagine that you can only serve Nigeria only in one capacity. During the regime of late General Sani Abacha, you accepted the appointment to serve as the Chairman of the then Petroleum Trust Fund PTF. The general opinion was that you served faithfully in this capacity. Well done Sir! But you never asked Abacha to vacate office for you as your former subordinate in the army. Never! In fact that would have been a dangerous move, if not suicidal. Rather you served faithfully under your former junior in the army. Sir, imagine if you take on another job like the Chairman of EFCC or ICPC or NDLEA. Nigerians actually need you to serve in one of these capacities much more than they need you in the Presidency. Mere mentioning your name as Chairman of EFCC would drive many corrupt men underground. But you wouldn’t . Either the Presidency or nothing. When are you going to handover to the next person? It is either you do it voluntarily or risk disgrace at the polls. In 1983 at the age of 41, you became the Head of State. Most Nigerians in my age have not had the opportunity to serve, but we still remain committed to the Nigerian project. You should rather be graceful to God and to Nigerians for the numerous opportunities that have come your way to serve Nigerians. Others are begging for just one opportunity to serve. Sir, you have to accept the stark reality on ground that you have served your time already. That is life for you. You run the race, you handover the baton for others to run, you cannot hold on to the baton more than is necessary. As a former head of State you are already a member of the Council of State Meeting. You have every avenue to channel your views across. You don’t necessarily have to be in a front-line role, you can serve in an advisory capacity. That is still service. In conclusion, In fairness to you Sir, any of your Children would pose a serious challenge to Jonathan more than yourself. I do not see Nigerians electing a 72 year old former Head of state to lead us in this Digital era. With due respect to you Sir, you belong to the Analogue age and therefore, will not fit in as president in this digital era. This is the blunt truth. Please do not enter the Guinness book of world records on a negative note. Losing four consecutive Presidential election would not augur well for your reputation. It is in your best interest to assume your position as an elder statesman and allow others to serve. Nigeria does not belong to you alone. It belongs to us all. Post By PGEJS-GSF 2015. |

* I have never seen any school built in his name. * I have never seen any borehole constructed by him. * There is no record of any scholarship awarded by him or for him nor through him. * I have never seen him use his popularity to canvass for any charitable work nor any humanitarian effort, not even at the height of the polio scourge where other purposeful and prominent leaders lead the campaign for immunization. * No single text book has been donated to any school either by him, for him or through him. * Asides from doing nothing, he has not improved himself since his exit from office. * No book written, no memoirs, no lectures, nothing. * The only thing of note he can point to are his numerous interviews on the BBC Hausa station. * He never champion for a university in his state nor has he ever been involved in any kind of programme to better the lives of the Almajiris in Daura. * His entire existence has not lead to any meaningful development in Daura, yet they say he can change Nigeria. Doesn't charity begin at home again? * No wonder he was referred to as being ''perpetually unelectable''. * He is not a patron to any organization, group or association. * No professional body in Nigeria has ever invited him for their lecture, convention or gala night. * The only time any known form, body or human assemblage ever chose him to do anything for them was when the Boko Haram terrorist sect nominated him as their spoke person in the proposed talks with the Fed.
