5 (MUST DO) DAILY MANAGEMENT ROUTINE CHECK IN YOUR POULTRY FARM FOR TOP PERFORMANCE.* You have successfully set up your Poultry pen/chicken coop, and your chicks are already having a good time in their new home. As every other poultry farmer, you are super excited about your latest adventure, but at the same time you feel apprehensive about the whole thing, despite your preparation. During this time, you might have the feeling or fear your chickens may get infested by disease and die, or they might not grow well. There is this fear I normally have when ever I have a new batch of chicks to brood. I call it *Brooderphobia* - the fear of finding death chick in your pen. And as a Poultry farmer you may have passed through similar experience. No successful Poultry farmer that have never had a terrible experience. But what can we do to at least minimize this fear and prevent it from materializing, especially as a beginner. I present to you the best Management practices acronym Known as FLAWSS. Where, F = Feed L = light W= water S = Space S= Security (biosecurity) These are the five areas you should check on your daily routine in your farmer. *Feed* : Make sure your feed is of high quality containing the right feed ingredients in the right proportion. ️ Buy your feed batch by batch. Don't buy a large number to stock for the next six months( buy the quatity that will finish within 2 to 3 months at maximum). The quality of feed decreases as they stay longer, and they will be prone to rodents, weevil, and molds infestation, which further reduces the quality of the feed and exposes your birds to diseases. ️ Avoid feed wastage. If you over fill the feeders, your birds will not only waste the feed, but could also so get sick from mold infestation. ️ Store your feed in a cool dry place. If you are making use of silos, clean the silos very well and scrape any heat patch areas that could heat up your feed and cause it to spoil. ️ Any time you visit your farm during the day, turn up the feed by passing your hands through the feed. This is helps to refresh the feed, and also ensure they get the whole nutrients they needed. ️ Supplement your feed Using a recommended schedule. Add your supplements like calcium or medications at the right age, be it layers or Broilers. ️ Adjust your feeder as your birds grows. The feeder should be at the same level with your chickens back, not above their neck or head. Remove feeders if the weather is too hot, especially with Broilers. It can't indirectly lead to sudden death as a result of heat stroke. Give plenty of fresh cool water during this time. You can put the feeders back when the weather is cool. BROODING OF DAY OLD CHICKS *Brooding: means an application of heat to the birds at early part of their life and care of young chicks by provision of optimum environment. *REASON FOR BROODING - Brooding provides extra heat from external sources - chicks will not take sufficient feeds and water if they are provided with high or low temperature - Proper brooding help in constant growth of birds, poor brooding leads to retardation in growth - poor brooding will no allow Chicks to digest the yolk leading to omphalitis - Proper booding eradicate early mortality in chicks. *ESSENTIAL KEYS IN BROODING -Pre-Placement Preparation (PPP) - Feed and water Management -Light Management - Temperature Management -Air management (cross ventilation) *A. PRE-PLACEMENT PREPARATION (PPP) -Brooding house MUST be cleaned thoroughly - The floor should be soaked preferable with a strong disinfectant -Curtains used should be soaked in disinfectant and hanged in the sun to dry - Feeders and drinkers should be washed and disinfected, then sun-dry for 2 days - Arrange all equipment in the house -Prepare the brooder ring or brooder space and Spread the litter, -Fix the curtains on the open sides - Disinfect the brooder using a good quality disinfectant - Provide foot baths at the entrance with a disinfectant e.g. Kerol, vinkol, lysol, morigard -Brooder should be ready prior to fumigation - Litter material filled up to 4 inches thick from the floor - You may Spread newspapers on the floor to cover the litter and you may not. - Place the heat source at the centre of the brooder ring. *B. FEED AND WATER MANAGEMENT -Use supplemental feeder trays at placement to help chicks get off to the best start possible - Feeding trays should be provided at the rate of 1 tray per 40 chicks Or thereabout -Place feeder trays between the drinkers -Extra feeders should be provided for the from day 1 to 14 - provide clean water for the chick - crops of chicks should be checked in the morning after placement to ensure they have found feed and water. - A minimum of 95% of the crops should feel soft and pliable indicating chicks have successfully located feed and water. -Hard crops indicate chicks have not found adequate water and water availability should be checked immediately. -Swollen and distended crops indicate chicks have located water but insufficient feed and in this case the availability and consistency of the feed should be immediately evaluated. *C. LIGHT MANAGEMENT - Continuous lighting should be provided for the first 48-72 hours post placement. - It is highly recommended that all rearing houses use -light duration ( day 1-3 =23hrs, day 4 - 7= 22hrs, day 8-14 = 20hrs, day 15 - 21= 19hrs, day 22-28=18hrs *D.TEMPERATURE MANAGEMENT -Evening is the best time to observe the chicks and make temperature adjustment -Thermometers may not always be available, hence we use the behaviour of chicks as a guide. *E. AIR AND VENTILATION MANAGEMENT -Cross Ventilation should be provided for optimum comfort of the chicks -Free moving spaces should be provided all around the feeders and drinkers, so that the chicks can feed and drink. The difference between Noiler and Broiler. Noiler is raided for both meat and egg production while broiler is raised for meat alone. Noilers comes in different colours unlike broilers that come mostly in whites. Noiler can be feed on kitchen waste and can be left on a free range to fend for themselves while broiler would be raised in closed indoor.

Did you know that Guinea fowl farming is more profitable than broiler chickens??Below are the reasons: 1)The mortality rate in Guinea fowls is 0.43% compared to broiler chickens. 2) Guinea fowls are disease resistant because their immune system is thrice stronger than village chickens hence cutting vaccination and medical expenses. 3) Guinea fowls in their nature lay eggs 100-150 eggs but under good nutrition and management they can reach upto 200 eggs per laying season.Hence if you have an incubator it’s a plus. 4) They multiply quickly than chickens. 5) Guinea fowls partake local and indigenous foods like insects, ground grains, small green grasses, pests and other foods invisible to the human eye. 6) They don’t require huge capital to start. 7) Guinea fowl meat is tastier and delicious than chicken meat.It has a gamey taste.Thats why in restaurants Guinea fowl meat is so expensive than chicken meat. They act as watchdogs from thieves.Guinea fowls can detect thieves at any time weather night or day even if they are sleeping thereby alerting you by producing loud sounds.Thieves avoid compounds with Guinea fowls.9) They kill snakes due to their strong beaks and talons. The only trick about Guinea fowls is to understand their behaviour because they are semi-wild in nature unlike chickens.

Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD). CRD is one of the most common causes of disease in backyard fowls mostly now that we are in the harmattan and everywhere seems dusty with dry air all over. Chronic respiratory disease (CRD) occurs when chickens and turkeys that are infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum are stressed. The bacteria then causes major damage to the bird's respiratory system. Mycoplasma gallisepticum spreads via eggs, airborne transmission and indirect or mechanical routes such as introducing infected birds to an existing flock, or via bird transport containers. M. Gallisepticum can reside in a flock with few indications of its presence until the flock or individuals in it are stressed sufficiently to show signs of respiratory disease. SIGNS OF CRD. The signs of CRD are sniffling, sneezing, coughing and other signs of respiratory distress. When suspected, observe the birds from a distance to get a good idea of the symptoms as birds often do not display signs of disease once caught. Sometimes CRD slowly spreads through the flock causing poor production, retarded growth and wet noses. In these cases there are usually few mortalities unless the underlying stressors increase. Similar Diseases Other diseases that have similar clinical signs like CRD are Coryza, Infectious bronchitis, Infectious laryngotracheitis and Fowl cholera. TREATMENT. There are antibiotics that can help to control the disease but reducing stress is an essential component to managing the disease once it is in the flock. Some include Anti-CRD, Tylosin, Enrofloxacin, Terramycin, Tylodox, BIO-TILMICONSIN. Just do well to read dosage on drug pack before administration to birds. PREVENTION. BIRDS that are vaccinated against CRD are available from suppliers - make sure you ask about the vaccination status of the birds you acquire them. Management issues must be addressed before the birds arrive. Ensure birds are free of M. Gallisepticum on introduction. An all-in, all-out system with thorough cleaning down between batches and acquiring vaccinated birds helps. Ensure the nutrition and flock dynamics (size, age distribution, presence of roosters etc) are also optimal. Housing that is difficult to clean and thus accumulates manure, dust and vermin leads to many common ailments in poultry. HAPPY BIRD!!!HAPPY FARMER |

MORTALITY PATTERN ASSOCIATED WITH COMMERCIAL BROILER PRODUCTION. Flock mortality has a major influence on the size of the settlement check after harvest and so is one of the greatest worries of any broiler grower. While differences in breeder flock status, genetic strain, hatchery conditions and management practices mean that two consecutive flocks on a particular farm will seldom have similar mortality patterns, the examination of data from numerous flocks can help to identify specific mortality patterns. MORTALITY PATTERNS Broiler mortality usually peaks at approximately 3 to 4 days after placement, declines until approximately day 9 or 10 then stabilize until approximately day 30. After day 30 a gradual increase will be observed until approximately day 40 to 45. After day 45, mortality rates increased until harvest. EARLY MORTALITY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF CULLING The peak in mortality at day 3 to 4 may coincide with the disappearance of the yolk sac in the intestine of chicks. Chicks that for whatever reason do not begin to eat and drink may survive the first few days with the yolk sac alone, but once this food source is depleted the chick will soon perish. At 3 to 4 days of age experienced growers can usually distinguish chicks that are destined to succumb from those that are off to a good start by their size and vocalization patterns. While chicks that are off to a good start are active, avidly eating feed and move away quickly when approached, cull birds will often stand by themselves, chirp and refuse to move away as the grower comes near. When cull birds are found they should be immediately removed and humanely destroyed. The longer these birds remain in the flock the more detrimental they become to the feed conversion ratio. In addition, removing cull birds at this early stage will improve flock uniformity, making the management of feeder and drinker height much easier as the flock ages. It is extremely difficult to properly manage feeder and drinker height with numerous bird sizes in a house. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EARLY MORTALITY AND LATE MORTALITY Flocks that lost the most birds early, tended to lose the most birds late. In addition, when first-week mortality was high, uniformity was often a problem, and feed conversions were frequently less than desirable. These flocks required additional time, effort and management skill to achieve an acceptable level of performance. LATE MORTALITY Mortality after about day 45 was most likely due to heart attacks, ascites and leg problems since these diseases generally increase dramatically late in the life of the flock. Clearly, death losses late in the flock can have serious negative consequences on both feed conversion and kilograms of sellable meat. To some degree, these problems can be reduced with proper feeding and lighting programs. SUMMARY Mortality in broiler flocks represents lost income to growers and integrators alike. Even though mortality is an everyday part of broiler production, growers should tailor management programs to reduce its overall effect on flock performance. An aggressive culling program early in each flock that humanely removes substandard birds as they appear can improve overall flock uniformity and performance with a minimal negative effect on feed conversion ratio. Allowing cull birds to remain in a flock increases the difficulty in feeder and drinker management throughout the flock. Also, if these birds succumb or are culled late in the flock, they have a much greater negative impact on feed conversion because they have eaten more feed (which is now lost) than they would have if removed at 1 or 2 weeks of age. Management programs later in the flock are often designed to slow growth slightly to reduce late mortality due to ascites, heart attacks, and leg problems. CONCLUSION Recording mortality in the first few days of birds arrival shouldn't be regarded as an abnormality as the death of the young bird can be traced to some factors like; post-transit stress(always welcome them with glucose and vitamin), non-conducive environment, huddling/smothering, common brooding errors( high/low temperature, smoke from the brooder, inadequate ventilation e.t.c). As a matter of fact, 3-5% mortality is still acceptable in every broiler flock within 42 days of production( i.e. Maximum of 5 dead birds in a flock of 100 broilers within 42 days of raising) However, an unnatural spike in the mortality rate(especially during the first week) should call for the prompt attention of an experienced personnel(e.g Vet) to troubleshoot the causes and provide remedies to the situation.
