*STOP ARGUING ABOUT LASOTA OR GUMBORO. FIRST; UNDERSTAND WHY YOU ARE USING THEM!*

10 FARMERS CAN GIVE YOU 10 DIFFERENT VACCINATION SCHEDULES AND STILL GET HEALTHY BIRDS. HERE’S WHY.

One of the biggest mistakes I see among new poultry farmers is copying another farmer’s vaccination schedule without understanding why they are using it.

Someone says, “Use Lasota first.”

Another says, “No, start with Gumboro.”

Then beginners become confused.

Let me tell you something.

If you ask 10 experienced poultry farmers about their vaccination schedule, you may get 10 different answers. The surprising part is that many of them still achieve excellent results.

That is one of the most interesting things about poultry farming.

Different management practices can still produce healthy birds when they are done correctly.

So instead of asking, “Which one should I copy?”, ask yourself, “Why is this vaccine being given?”

Understanding the purpose of every vaccine is more important than blindly following someone’s schedule.

*WHAT IS LASOTA?*

Lasota is a vaccine used to protect birds against Newcastle Disease (ND).

Newcastle Disease is one of the most dangerous viral diseases in poultry. It spreads very fast and can wipe out an entire flock if birds are not protected.

That is why many farmers prefer to administer Lasota early, especially in areas where Newcastle Disease is common or has been reported recently.

*WHAT IS GUMBORO?*

Gumboro vaccine protects birds against Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD).

This disease attacks the immune system of young birds. Once their immune system is damaged, they become weaker and more vulnerable to many other diseases.

That is why some farmers choose to give Gumboro first, depending on the disease pressure in their area and the vaccination program recommended for their birds.

So who is right?

The truth is that both can be right.

Your vaccination program should be based on your environment, disease history, hatchery recommendations, and veterinary advice. It should not be based on what is trending on Facebook or WhatsApp.

*BEFORE YOU GIVE ANY VACCINE*

Never rush.

Always inspect the vaccine before using it.

Check the expiry date.

Make sure the cold chain has been maintained.

When you look inside the bottle, the vaccine should normally appear as a small freeze dried pellet or cake attached to the inside of the vial. It should not already be loose powder, broken up, wet, or melted. If it looks damaged, don’t buy or use it because poor storage can make the vaccine ineffective.

*PREPARE THE BIRDS*

Before vaccination, remove drinking water for a short period so the birds will be thirsty and drink the vaccine quickly when it is offered.

Many farmers withdraw water for about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the birds’ age and the weather. Avoid excessive water withdrawal, especially during hot weather, because it can stress the birds.

Feed them before introducing the vaccine so they are calm and ready.

*HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD YOU USE?*

The correct amount of water depends on:

• The number of birds.

• Their age.

• The weather.

The goal is simple.

Prepare only the amount of clean water the birds can finish within 1 to 2 hours so every bird receives enough vaccine.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of doses in the vial and the recommended dilution.

*HOW DO YOU MIX THE VACCINE?*

There are different methods.

Some farmers draw clean water with a syringe and gently inject it into the vaccine vial before mixing.

Others place the vaccine vial into the water and allow it to dissolve carefully.

Whichever method you use, work quickly, keep everything clean, and protect the vaccine from direct sunlight.

*SHOULD YOU USE MILK?*

This is another topic that causes arguments.

Some farmers use ordinary clean, chlorine free water only.

Others add skimmed milk powder or liquid skim milk.

Both methods can work.

So why do some farmers use milk?

Milk helps protect the live vaccine virus from chlorine, minerals, and other substances that may be present in drinking water. This helps the vaccine remain active until the birds drink it.

If you use milk, plain skimmed milk or skimmed milk powder is generally recommended because it contains less fat and is commonly used for vaccine stabilization.

Does that mean vaccination will fail without milk?

No.

Many farmers achieve excellent results using clean, chlorine free water alone.

The most important things are using a quality vaccine, maintaining the cold chain, mixing it correctly, and ensuring every bird drinks enough.

At the end of the day, poultry farming is not about following the crowd.

It is about understanding what you are doing and why you are doing it.

Knowledge will always give you better results than copying people blindly.

Learn first.

Understand first.

Then vaccinate with confidence.

Treat coccidiosis naturally by immediately administering anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory botanicals. Add crushed garlic (for allicin) and turmeric (for curcumin) to their feed, or mix apple cider vinegar and oregano oil into their water. For severe, bloody cases, offer pureed papaya or bitter leaves to disrupt the parasite's life cycle.

Yes, chickens can recover from mild cases of coccidiosis on their own by developing a natural immunity. However, severe infections cause significant intestinal damage and can be fatal without treatment. Survivors may suffer permanent gut scarring that stunts growth and permanently reduces egg production.

Can chickens recover from coccidiosis without treatment?

The best and most widely recommended treatment for coccidiosis in chickens is amprolium (e.g., Corid), which is a thiamine inhibitor that starves the parasite. Other effective medications include toltrazuril and sulfa-based drugs. You must treat the entire flock through their drinking water for 5 to 7 days, and follow up with a vitamin B

Anti-cocci in poultry refers to medications or treatments—commonly known as anticoccidials or coccidiostats—used to prevent and treat coccidiosis, a severe and common intestinal disease caused by single-celled Eimeria protozoan parasites.
