*Understanding leg paralysis for better management and treatment*

Leg paralysis or lameness is a common challenge among chickens, especially with broilers. And this leg problems are not leaving soon.

Understanding and knowing the actual cause of paralysis in your Chicken is a key to effective management and treatment.

Most people have this misconception that leg paralysis is always associated with lack of calcium, that is not always true. In many cases, these paralysed birds are given calcium supplements or oyster shell thinking that this will actually works, but not knowing that they are adding salt to injury.

In fact, excess calcium can worsen the case like tying up phosphorous, making it unavailable. It can also cause rickets the same as if they were getting too little calcium.

Excess calcium can lead to low egg production, and lack of appetite.

If you must give your chicken calcium you can put it in a separate feeder or dish. Chickens instinctively know what they need, they will feed on it when the need arises. You must not add it to their feed except in an extraordinary cases.

Other causes of paralysis include

1. Hatchery problems- wrong temperature and humidity adjustments.

2. Lack of Vitamins and minerals like Vitamins B12, Vit D, and Phosphorus

3. Mechanical injuries like during transportation or vaccination.

4 diseases like Newcastle and Marek can also cause paralysis

5. Cage fatigue is common in layers.it causes sudden bone loses due to drop in Calcium level. This is observed mostly when birds start laying. Lack of balance between Calcium, Vit D and phosphorus, low feed in take, stress can also cause Cage fatigue.

6. Weight problem is the major causes of paralysis in broilers.

However, birds don't die from paralysis directly but from persecution due to lack of food and water.

Therefore, understanding the cause of paralysis in your Chicken is the key to better management and treatment.
