BASIC PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS BURSAL DISEASE IN POULTRY PRODUCTION (GUMBORO)*

Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) also known as Gumboro is an acute and highly contagious disease of young chickens, usually 3-6-week-old chickens. It is caused by a virus known as the Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV). This virus belongs to the avibirnavirus family and can survive for months in contaminated farms thereby constituting a big threat to the farms. Once the virus gain entry into the system of a bird, it affects the tissues of the immune system, especially the Bursa of Fabricius (BF) organ, resulting in immunosuppression and susceptibility to other infections, such as E. coli, Salmonella, Mycoplasma, coccidia, Marek’s disease and others. Till date, the chicken is considered the only species in which natural infection occurs.

*TRANSMISSION*

The mode of transmission is primarily through the fecal-oral route (occurs when bacteria or viruses found in the stool of one chick are swallowed by another). Feed, water and litter from an infected house remain infective for a long time. Also, the virus is resistant to some disinfectants. However, there is no evidence for egg (vertical) transmission of IBDV.

KUROILER CHICKEN VS NOILER CHICKEN:
DIFFERENCES AND ECONOMIC BENEFITS

Kuroiler chicken and Noiler chicken breed are hybrid breeds of chicken developed to meet consumers demands and also increase in productivity with relatively low input, hence, making the enterprise more lucrative. These two breeds of chicken are good converter of feed; they are dual purpose breed with relatively good yield compare to other breeds of chicken, they are hardy and more resistant to poultry diseases.

These virtues have made Kuroiler chicken and Noiler chicken desirable.

Kuroiler chicken and Noiler chicken are different breeds, some farmers still think they are the same, probably as a result of their plumage or appearance. They are different breeds; the differences between the two breeds shall be discuss in this article with their economic benefits.

Characteristics of Noiler chicken

The Noiler chicken is a dual-purpose breed of chicken developed in Nigeria by Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery. Noiler is a hybrid of broiler and cockerel, thus, share desired traits of both broiler and cockerel.

1. Appearance

Unlike broiler chickens, Noiler chickens come in varying colors: black, white, yellowish, brown and grey patches.

2. Growth rate

Noiler chicken is a fast-growing chicken; they consume more than other breeds but are good converter. they mature at 4 months with weight varying from 3-4kg. They are good converter of feed.

Noiler chickens can be harvested at four months and the farmer can get over 3kg of meat compared to cockerel which takes about six months to attain 2kg. Aside from their fast-growth rate, they are good foragers and can thrive well on forage and kitchen waste.

3. Noiler meat:

Noilers meat possesses white meat and more nutritious. It is tough in nature with a distinct indigenous taste which makes the meat sweeter compare to other breeds. Another interesting thing to note about Noiler is that they are even more disease resistant than other breeds.

Their meat production remains high as long as you take good care of them and feed them properly. In about 12 weeks, the chickens will be matured enough for slaughtering- weighs 3.5kg or more at maturity. Cocks have proven to weigh more than this.

Noiler chickens are perfect alternatives. Also, meat is evenly distributed over the chicken’s body parts.

4. Eggs production

Noiler chicken should start laying eggs at 22 weeks old. As soon as they begin their egg laying session, it goes on for two years. They lay up to 200 eggs per year; the size of their eggs is relatively bigger with good quality, both internal and external. Their eggs are extremely bigger and with dark-yellow yolk when compared with our local chicken.

Noiler chicken breeds are undoubtedly a reliever for farmers in terms of feeding habit and output ratio when compared to other breeds. If kept in a disease-free environment, the breed is always strong and healthy throughout the four months.

Characteristics of Kuroiler chicken

The Kuroiler chicken is a dual-purpose hybrid breed developed in India. The Kuroiler chicken is the result of the cross between either White Leghorn roosters with Rhode Island Red hens (laying hen) or colored broiler roosters crossed with Rhode Island Red hens (laying hens)

Kuroilers are highly adaptive breed of chicken; they are well adapted to any climatic condition. They are good for saving cost as they can thrive on forage and kitchen waste. Kuroiler chickens, being a native of India, are very popular among the farmers in India. Thanks to Grinphield Hatchery produce kuroilers chicken in Nigeria. The only hatchery producing it until now.

1. Appearance

Like Noiler chicken, Kuroiler chicken come in varying colors: black, white, yellowish, brown and grey patches.

2. Growth rate

Kuroiler chickens grow faster than Noiler. However, care must be taken when rearing Kuroiler chickens; they are best reared in a free-range system or semi-intensive system, where they scavenge what they eat themselves.

Feeding Kuroiler chickens formulated feed is inefficient because they do not convert formulated feeds better than they do for forages. This is as a result of their genetic make-up.

3. Kuroiler meat

The meat of Kuroiler chicken white and very nutritious. When allowed to forage, a farmer can get up to 5 kg at 4 months.

4. Eggs production

Kuroiler hens come to lay at approximately 4 months, they come to lay faster than Noiler chicken. Kuroilers lay up to 200 eggs per year.

5. Resistance to diseases

Noilers are truly hardy but kuroiler are hardiest. Kuroiler are well adapted compare to Noiler. Noiler chickens are more susceptible to coccidiosis compare to Kuroiler; also, deformities in Kuroiler are reduce compare to other breeds.

Conclusion:
With any of these breeds of chicken, a farmer can successfully earn more with less effort or input. Kuroiler chicken and Noiler chicken are both easy to raise; cost-wise, they are more effective and better converter of feed.

4. BROODER BOX: A temperature-controlled, heated box used for raising newly hatched poultry.

5. BROODY HEN: A hen that is intent on sitting on and hatching a clutch of eggs on a nest. Broody hens are often used to hatch eggs of other fowl.

6. BROODING PERIOD: The period in a young fowl’s life between hatching until they become fully feathered.

7. BUTTERCUP COMB: A comb that has a single leader near the bear that leads into a comb with evenly spaced points that looks like a crown on the bird’s head.

8. CANDLING: Procedure of shining light through an egg to determine if it is fertilized or not.

9. CAPON: Are male chickens that have been castrated at 4-8 months old, weighing 5-9 pounds that produce more white meat and have higher fat content than other chickens.

10. CHICK: A newly hatched or very young chicken.

11. CHICK TOOTH: A hard tooth-like structure at the end of a chick's beak. Also known as an egg tooth, it is used to assist hatching chicks in breaking through the eggshell.

12. CLOACA: The opening in the rear of chickens through which the intestinal, urinary and reproductive tracts empty.

13. CLUTCH: A group of eggs that are laid together in one nest.

14. COCCIDIOSIS: An animal disease caused by infestation of the parasite Coccidia within the intestinal tract. Coccidiosis spreads from one chicken to another by contact with feces or ingestion of infected tissue.

15. COCK: A male chicken over one year of age.

16. COCKEREL: A male chicken less than 1 year old.

17. COMB: The fleshy growth or crest on the top of a chicken's head. Combs are usually larger on males than on females and are typically red.

18. COOP: An enclosure or housing structure built for chickens.

19. CRD: Chronic Respiratory Disease, a common disease of chickens that is characterized by sneezing and difficulty breathing. Commonly controlled with antibiotics usually administered in feed or drinking water.

20. CROP: Part of a chicken’s digestive located at the base of the neck that serves to store ingested food.

21. CUSHION COMB: A small flat and solid comb with no spikes or depressions.

22. DOWN: Soft, fine and fluffy feathers on fowl.

23. DUSTING OR DUST BATH: Common chicken behavior of bathing with dust in a shallow depression to help rid themselves of mites and parasites.

41. NON-SETTER: Hens that have little or no desire to incubate eggs.

42. ORNAMENTAL BREED: A breed of chicken used for ornamental purposes and are primarily appreciated for their stunning appearance as opposed to egg or meat production.

43. PEA COMB: Medium-size comb that features three ridges running lengthwise from the top of the beak to the top of the head and resembles an opened pea pod with peas running up the middle.

44. PHOTOPERIOD: The interval in a 24-hour period in which a plant or animal is exposed to light. PIPPING: The process by which baby chicks break open a hole in the eggshell and hatch.

45. PRIMARIES: The big, stiff feathers on the chicken’s wings that aid in flying.

46. PRODUCTION BREED: Are commercial strains of fowl that are used for high production of eggs or meat. PULLET: A chicken less than 1 year old.

47. ROOSTER: A male chicken that is at least 1 year old.

48. ROOST: A perch typically inside a coop upon which fowl rest off of the ground.

49. ROSE COMB: A flat broad comb that is similar in shape to a rose petal.

50. RUN: An enclosed area outdoors that is connected to a coop and allows chickens to roam freely.

51. SCRATCH: A type of feed that can consist of cracked corn and different types of whole grains. It is often fed as a treat for backyard chickens and not used as a main food source. SEXING: When baby chicks are separated by gender.

52. SHANKS: Part of the chicken’s legs just above the foot.

53. SINGLE COMB: A moderately thin and well attached comb that stands up above the skull and has 5-6 distinctive points.

54. SPUR: The Hot projection located on toward the rear of a chicken’s shank and is prominent in males. Spurs are used for defense and will grow throughout the birds’ life.

55. STARTER FEED: Pre-mixed commercial food for chicks, commonly available at feed or farm stores. These feeds should be fed to chicks for the first six to eight weeks of life. Typically available in medicated and non-medicated formulas.

56. STRAIGHT RUN: A term used to describe chicks for sale that have not been sexed. Groups of straight run chicks contain 50% of each gender on average, however odds of receiving 50/50 decrease with the fewer chicks you buy.

57. STRAWBERRY COMB: Is a very low and compact comb extending no farther than the middle of the skull is named for it’s appearance similar to that of a strawberry.

58. TURN: The act of turning incubated eggs to prevent the embryos from sticking to the shell membranes. UNTHRIFTY: Term often used when raising chickens to describe unhealthy birds that are failing to thrive or won't put on weight.

59. V-SHAPED COMB: A comb consisting of two horn-like pieces that are joined at the comb base.

60. VENT: The opening in the backside of a chicken where both waste is eliminated and eggs are laid. It is also known as the cloaca.

61. WATTLE: Thin growths of flesh that are located on each side of the throat or beak. They are typically red in color and are larger in most males.

LAYERS OR BROILERS?
WHICH ONE IS MORE PROFITABLE?
WHICH ONE WILL GIVE YOU MORE MONEY?
WHICH ONE IS EASIER TO HANDLE?
WHICH ONE WILL SUIT YOU WELL?

These are the things I'm going to talk about because many things are involve.

1. How much money do you have?
2. How much time do you have?
3. Are you good at risk taking?

If you weigh all these things, you should know which one to go for.

WHAT ARE BROILERS?
Broilers are birds that are breed for meat consumption. The birds have extra ordinary genes. In 7/8 weeks, you will be able to sell them if you feed them well and other things involve like a good poultry Management.

WHAT ARE LAYERS?
Layers are birds that are breed for laying of eggs. They have extra ordinary gene for laying. They lay almost every 26/28 hours . They weight less but they lay more eggs. They can lay 280/300 eggs in a business year.
Now that we know what layers and broilers are, Which one should you keep? There are few facts to be consider.

1. START OF CAPITAL
The Start of capital is very cheap for broilers compare to layers. When starting a broiler farm, you will need things like water, feeds, Pen, drinkers, feeders, Vaccines, lighting, heater to mention a few.
Layers start up capital is very much. All things needed in broiler farm in terms for feed will weigh more for the layers because you will rear them for 22 weeks before you can start earning money. So therefore they will need more feeds, more vaccine, perches and debeaking the birds too will cost you money. The start up capital for layers is more higher than broilers.
If you have more money, it is easier to do layers and if you have less money, it is good to do broilers.

2. AVAILABILITY
Broiler takes like 7 or 8 weeks to mature, so probably if you are on leave from office, or on holiday, you can be around and rear broiler while for layers, you will need to be available. You will need to be on the farm as often as possible because layers risks are higher. If you have less time to be available, broiler is okay for you but if you know you can be available and do everything, then go for layers.

3. SKILLS AND EXPERTISE NEEDED
If you want to go for broiler, you need less Skill when starting because after 7/8 weeks, you have sold off your birds and by then you would have gained more experience like when and what type of feed to give, when to vaccinate, you will have more time to understand your market situation, you will have less thing to deal with to mention a few but in layers, you need more skills and expertise because you will vaccinate more, deal with potential disease, get people who are more skillful than you because the risks are more higher or DM me for consultation. Any mistake made in layers farming, you will be punished very heavily which is not so in broiler farming.

4. DISEASES AND TREATMENT
When rearing broilers, you keep for 7/8 weeks and during those weeks, the chances of your bird getting Sick is Lower due to the limited time and when you have a good bio security measures on ground, you vaccinate them less time and you spend very little money on those things while for layers, you keep the birds for a very long time so the chances of the birds getting sick is very high

5. RISK INVOLVE
In terms of broiler, 30-40% of the birds might die, you will suffer a loss and sell others at maturity and probably after two months, you bring in another set of birds and within 7/8 weeks you can recover from the loss. In layers, let assume there is a Newcastle disease on the farm which is a very horrible disease. It can wipe away 80-90% of birds in a short time on a farm so if that happens, that will be horrible because 10-20% of the birds will be left and you will need to care for them. You can't recover from that loss for almost 2 years if assume the birds involve are 5000 layers, so the risk of loss is more higher in layers than broilers. If you are not a risk taker, broiler is good for you but if you are a risk taker, then layers is better for you. The more the risk, the more the profit and No risk, no gain.

6. MARKETING
In 7/8 weeks, broilers is ready for sell and by then, if you don't have the market, you will suffer a loss because after 7/8weeks they will keep eating and you will keep feeding them, where as the customer coming to buy it won't give you extra money for extra days used for feeding them when considering the hike of feeds nowadays. You have to be certain by the time you bring them in and your market must have been sorted out to avoid losses at the end of the day. In layers, they are very easy to market. Why? Because they lay eggs and the eggs can be preserve while you look for a better offer in terms of price .

7. REVENUE GENERATION FROM THE BUSINESS
Layers will give you more money compare to broiler at the end of the business year because you sells your egg and birds at the end of the business year. Also you need larger number of layers in order to get better profit because in broiler, you can start with 50/70 birds and you get your profit back in a short time but for layers you will need at least 200/ 500 birds for you to get any sensible money when it starts paying off.
For broiler, for you to have enough profit, you must keep large number of birds and a constant demands for the birds. Remember if you go for large numbers of broilers, you will need a refrigerator to preserve them in case there is no available market and in order not to suffer loss. In short time, broiler give you money but for layers, it takes months probably a year or more before you can start making your money back. So if you need quick profit, broilers is a way to go but if you need to persist and get money over a long period, layers is good for you.

To me, Layers is more profitable.
Why did i choose layers? If you weigh all the information i have given you and you understood it very well, layers will give you more money!!!
So for me, i really need to make money because i am a risk taker...What about you?

HOW TO KNOW GOOD LAYING HENS WITH PICTURES

Before choosing any bird, it is imperative you study the bird decisively to ensure it suits and meets the production requirements. At times, an unproductive laying bird is very difficult to identify but with further scientific research, some features have been noticed and recommended for farmers. Such features should be traced and present in the birds.

Characteristics of a good laying chicken

1. A bright red comb and wattle( check picture below)

The comb and wattle are the superficial parts of the laying chickens. These two parts indicate the health status of poultry birds. Before any disease condition manifests, the clinical signs are first noticed on the comb and wattle.

A good laying chicken has a bright red comb and wattle; this shows that the bird is in good condition and can produce optimally. A laying chicken with a pale or dark comb and wattle is not in good condition; such birds have poor production potential. When buying your point of lay chickens, opt for chickens with bright red comb and wattle.

2. Alert eyes

One of the important parts of a laying chicken is the eye. The eyes of a good laying bird are always alert and not depressed. Laying chickens with the weepy and dull eye are not good for egg production; they are sick birds that require medical attention. Rearing such birds will greatly increase the cost of production as the cost of medication and unutilized feeds accrue. Go for laying birds with bright and alerted eyes.

3. The Cloaca must be moist( check picture below)

The cloaca is the posterior orifice or outlet that allows the removal of digestive wastes and egg after it is completely formed. This part must always be moist and not dry; if it’s dry, it means the bird is not in good condition. Take the pain to examine this part to ensure it is moist before purchasing the birds.

4. The width between the pelvic bone should measure about 3-4 fingers

The pelvic bone is the bone around the cloaca, place your fingers around this area to measure it. If it accommodates more than two fingers; the bird is a good laying bird, but if it accommodates just two fingers, the bird is not. Try to check this out before purchasing the birds.

5. The beak and claws should be bleached

This is another feature you should look out for in your laying birds. The beaks and claws should be bleached; they are pale and lightened. This should as well be considered and observed in any earmarked laying birds.

These are the characteristics that determine the productivity of your laying bird. If these features are matched, the birds will produce up to their genetic potential. These are naturally modified characteristics of a good laying chicken to achieve high productivity. Try to observe all these before stocking your point of lay birds.
