₦airaland Forum

A farmer ask me how can someone brood a Guinea fowl.

Guinea fowl often referred to as guineas, are gamebirds that are increasingly popular among keepers of small and backyard flocks. Guineas are vigorous, hardy, and largely disease-free birds.

There are many reasons people raise guinea fowl. The birds sound an alarm whenever anything unusual occurs on the farm. While some people find this noise to be a nuisance, others find it to be an effective tool for protecting the farm and make guinea fowl the farmyard “watchdogs.” The loud noise of the guineas has also been shown to discourage rodents from invading the area.

Keeping guinea fowl is also an effective means of pest control. Flocks of guineas kill and eat mice and small rats. In addition, guinea fowl can be used to control insects. Wild guineas eat mainly insects, and domestic guineas can consume large amounts of insects without affecting garden vegetables or flowers. Guineas have been used to control wood ticks and insects such as grasshoppers, flies, and crickets. Guineas can reduce keepers’ risk of Lyme disease by consuming deer ticks, which carry the disease. Guinea fowl also eat slugs, and flocks have been known to attack snakes.

Guinea fowl can also be raised for meat and egg production. The meat of young guineas is tender and tastes like that of wild game. The meat is lean and rich in essential amino acids. Guinea eggs can be eaten just like chicken eggs (and should be collected daily if not used for hatching purposes). During the laying season, it is common for a guinea hen—an adult female at least one-year-old—to produce an egg a day.

Happy Birds, Happy Farmer* ‍

YOU INITIATE* * WE PROCESS* *WE DELIVER

A. Broiler Starter: This is high in protein, about 22-24% Digestible Crude Protein (DCP), and energy. It is given from day old until 4-6 weeks old. At this stage, a chick needs at least 2.65kg of feed.
B. Broiler Finisher: This is expected to contain about 18-20% DCP depending on the marketing target of the farmer. It has a lower protein and energy content than starter. It is given from about 4-6 weeks until targeted table weight is attained.
Since broilers are meant for meat production, they require feed with a higher content of DCP. A bird will need within 2.5kg to 4kg at this stage of their life. Therefore, you will need the followings to make 70 kg of broiler starter.
* Whole maize = 40 kg
* Fish meal (Omena) = 12 kg
* Soya beans = 14 kg
* Lime = 4 kg

2. Feed for Laying Birds
A. Starter: This class of feed should have about 18-20 DCP. Layers can be given broiler starter in their chick stage. This is given for the first 8 weeks. They can also be given chick mash. A chick will need about 1.2kg at this stage.
B. Grower Feed: This feed should have 16-18% DCP. Given from 8 to 20 weeks or when 5-10% of the birds start laying. About 5.2 kg of feed is required at this growing level.
C. Layers Feed: This feed should at least contain 18% DCP. It is introduced when 5-10% of the birds start laying and it is given until the birds are sold. A chick needs at least 5.2kg of feed and then 150g per day at laying period.
To make 70 kg of layers feed which contains at least 18% DCP to meet nutritional requirement, you will need to mix:
* 34 kg of whole maize
* 12 kg of Soya
* 8 kg of omena
* 10 kg of maize bran and
* 6 kg of Lime (as a calcium source)

3. Feed for Cockerels
Unlike the other two poultry birds, cockerel do not really need high DCP. Broiler Starter can be given for the first 6 weeks. Then, low quality or cheap feed can be served after 6 weeks. The farmer may formulate a cheap feed from soyabean meal, groundnut cake, maize, palm kernel cake and vitamin mineral premix. Other way round, the cockerel can be allowed to free-range feeding and supplement that with small quantity of high quality commercially packaged feed.
Cockerels are less productive in terms of meat increase. Farmers can constitute feeds with a DCP of between 15 –16 %. A bird needs 5.2kg starter, 250g per day grower and 265g per day finisher. The following recipes are needed to make 70 kg of the feed.
* Whole maize = 34 kg
* Soya bean = 12 kg
* Omena = 8 kg
* Maize bran = 10 kg
* Lime = 6 kg

Happy Birds, Happy Farmer* ‍

Protein: Dietary requirements for protein are actually requirements for the amino acids that constitute the protein. There are 22 amino acids in body proteins, and all are physiologically essential. Poultry cannot synthesize some of these, or cannot synthesize them rapidly enough to meet the metabolic requirement. Therefore, these amino acids must be supplied in the diet. Amino acid requirements vary considerably according to the productive state (i.e., growing, laying eggs, etc.), age, type, breed, and strain. Methionine is the amino acid most often deficient in laying rations.
When pullets begin laying, there is an increase in protein, vitamin and mineral requirements per day due to deposition in the egg. If dietary protein is too low or the amino acid requirements are not met, poor egg production and hatchability will occur.

When pullets begin laying, there is an increase in protein, vitamin and mineral requirements per day due to deposition in the egg. If dietary protein is too low or the amino acid requirements are not met, poor egg production and hatchability will occur.

Fat: Dietary fat is a source of energy and of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid. A deficiency of linoleic acid will adversely affect egg production. Dietary fats also serve as “carriers” of fat-soluble vitamins, and some fat is necessary for absorption of vitamins. In fact, impairment of the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) is the most serious consequence of a dietary deficiency of fat.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D is required for normal calcium absorption and utilization. If inadequate levels of vitamin D are fed, induced calcium deficiency quickly results and egg production decreases. Feed grade vitamin D comes in two forms, D2 and D3. In most animals, both are equally potent. In birds, however, D3 is substantially more active than D2. In poultry diets, therefore, vitamin D must be supplied in the form of D3.
