Simple Management Solutions to Heat Stress Problem
Here are some tips on how to manage heat stress in chickens in the hot season:

1. Digestion generates body heat, so feeding poultry during the best times of the day.
2. Reduce the dietary energy level in feed.
3. Add shade and adequate ventilation.
4. Vitamin C or Ascorbic Acid is one of the most important vitamins in heat stress. The serum CV is high when hot, its function can inhibit the increase in the body temperature of poultry, increase food intake, and promote the recovery of damaged tissue cells. The high temperature inhibits the synthesis of vitamin C in layers and requires additional compensation.
5. Birds do not have sweat glands, so they cool off by panting. Panting can be a sign of heat stress and the act of panting can upset the electrolyte balance of birds. If you suspect heat stress, add electrolytes to the birds’ water.
6. One of the best ways to prevent heat stress is to avoid overpopulation. To instantly reduce heat, reduce the number of birds in the house.
7. Avoid unnecessary activity. The summer heat puts enough stress on the birds. Be careful not to disturb them during the hottest time of the day.

What is Heat Stress?
Heat stress is a condition in chickens (and other birds) caused by high temperatures, especially when combined with high relative humidity and low airspeed. Some predisposing factors include genetics, feather coverage, heat acclimatization, drinking water temperature, and availability. Older birds, heavy breeds, and broilers are often more susceptible to heat stress.

Causes of Heat Stress
The main factors that cause heat stress in birds are commonly:

Environmental effects, such as solar radiation, high temperatures per season, and the absence of winds
Technical failures, which are caused by poorly designed facilities, errors in water supply, lack of ventilation, failure of cooling equipment, among others.
Effects of Heat Stress on Poultry
Severe heat stress can cause declines in production efficiency
Higher mortality rates in the flock.
Reduced growth rates
Low egg production and hatching rates.
Heat stress can also cause a change in the quality of the egg. You may notice smaller eggs, thinner layers, and generally poor internal egg quality.
When presenting heat stress, the performance of the chickens is affected, the production losses are very variable depending on the technical function, in the case of broiler chicken, feed consumption is reduced, weight gain is less It delays in its size, in part, because in the last weeks of the cycle, excessive heat is generated inside the house, because its body mass is very large in proportion to its organs, and physiologically the thermoregulation process is not suitable. In the laying hen, the problem is similar, overcrowding in the cage, the large number of chickens found in the house generates a large amount of heat, and their production cycle is so long that they become more susceptible to changes in temperature.... Causes Of SDS

The cause of SDS is not clear, but it is believed to be a metabolic disease related to high carbohydrate intake. There are others which can be classified into managemental, nutritional and dietary factors that can contribute to SDS but the major ones are discussed as follow:
* Fat deposition around the liver and heart regions may lead to fatty liver and sudden death.
* Sudden noise and high intensity lighting appear to increase incidence of SDS.
* The level and type of the fat in the diet may contribute.
* Stress, especially Heat Stress, can also induce SDS in broilers.
* Feed poisoning by mycotoxins and other animal pests like rats can influence SDS.


Prevention Of SDS
There is no definite treatment for SDS but certain preventive measures could be taken based on the causes. Some of the measures are:
* The incidence of sudden death syndrome can be minimized by slowing the growth rate of broilers. This could be done by controlling nutrient intake or by reducing hours of light per day.
* One should take cognizance of the ventilation within the pen. If one is able to reduce the pen temperature by any means that would help the birds to manage the stress.
* Since fat deposition around the liver and heart regions may lead to sudden death, reducing the energy and protein level in the diet or limiting the amount of feed provided could be necessary.
* Sudden noise and high light intensity should be controlled to reduce incidence of SDS.
* When you notice heat stress in your birds, add Electrolytes to their drinking water.
* Carbohydrates intake of the birds should be monitored not to be excessive.
* Finally, optimum biosecurity must be exercised to prevent spread of diseases that can influence SDS.

Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS)

Sudden death syndrome is a form of metabolic disorder that has to do with a condition in which a physically healthy fast growing broiler chicks suddenly die from no apparent causes. It is usually accompanied with a short wing beating convulsion prior to the death so that many affected birds are found lying on their back. It is therefore called 'flip over disease' but that does not mean that dead birds cannot lie on the chest, due to flaccid paralysis. SDS has been one of the major problem in broiler industry in many parts of the country as it can affect the bird of all ages started from day 2 till the market age. Peak mortality normally occur between 3 to 4 weeks of age. Also, it affects male birds than female counterpart. In most cases, it majorly attacks fast growing broilers due to heart failure or fat build up around liver and lungs......

Spur Trimming
Cocks use their spurs as weapons for fighting each other and for fighting off predators. Most hens have little rudimentary knobs instead of spurs, although some have real spurs that can grow quite long. And some hens get pretty feisty, although you’d be hard pressed to find a hen with spurs as lethal as those of an attack rooster.

The spur is an outgrowth of the leg bone, covered with the same tough keratinous material that makes up claws and beaks. The spur starts out as a little bony bump. As the rooster matures, the spur gets longer, curves, hardens, and develops a sharp pointed tip.
Chicken's spur can also be trimmed using nail clippers, dog nail clippers or any sort of nail clippers because overly long spurs may affect a cock’s ability to walk and to breed. Spurs are dangerous to other chickens and humans. Spurs may be trimmed to prevent injury to the bird’s handlers, to prevent the wounding of hens during breeding, to minimize injury in peck-order fights, and to spruce up an older cock for exhibition. A spur that curls back into the bird’s leg must be trimmed to prevent lameness. Just ensure that you don't cut the quick when trimming your chicken's spur.

Claw Trimming
A chicken uses its claws to scratch the ground for food and also to scratch an itch. When a chicken doesn’t have hard surfaces to scratch against, the nails continue to grow until they curl, and then the chicken cannot walk properly.

How To Trim Your Chicken’s Claws
It is unlikely that you will have to clip your chickens nails as they naturally keep them short by scratching around in your garden. If the claws are curling round then they will need trimming.
* Wrap your chicken in a towel to calm it and stop it flapping. If you have two people one person should flip the chicken over on to its back and place it in their lap. You should hold the legs firmly. You may need to wait for your chicken to relax into this position.
* Once your chicken is calm and not moving, you can wipe away any dirt or mud to make for easier trimming.
* The person doing the clipping of the nails should hold the toe between their finger and thumb and with the other hand clip about an either to a quarter of an inch off.

Tips: It is better to take off a smaller amount rather than a large amount to avoid cutting the quick which will cause pain to your chickens and will make the claw bleeding.

How to Trim Chicken Beaks, Claws, and Spurs.

A chicken’s spurs, claws, and beak are made of keratin; the same substance as your finger and toenails. This make them grow continually. Chickens in extensive system have their claws and beaks naturally wear down as they grow. But for intensive or backyard system, sometimes chicken beaks and claws grow too long and need to be trimmed. A rooster’s spurs, too, can grow too long for the bird’s comfort or safety.

Beak Trimming
Beak is used by chickens to gather food, explore and manipulating objects in the environment. Beak is also used for preening, nesting and engaging in social interactions. A chicken beak that grows improperly interferes with the chicken’s ability to eat and enjoy other activities necessary for its well-being. Chicken beak trimming is not the same as debeaking which refers to cutting so much from a beak that it remains permanently short to prevent cannibalism.

How To Trim Your Chicken’s Beak
* Wrap your chicken in a towel. This should keep them calm and stop them flapping.
* Take hold of your chicken's head. Be quite firm as you don’t want them to suddenly move.
* Use nail clippers, dog nail clippers are the best but any sort of nail clippers will work
* Trim the top of the beak back till it just slightly overhangs the bottom part of the beak.
* Use a file to file any sharp or jagged edges.

Note: Make sure you do not clip the ‘quick’. The quick is the darker portion of the beak. The ‘quick’ has blood nerves and cutting it will hurt your chicken. Having one person hold the chicken and one person clip the beak makes it a much easier and quicker process.......

The most common diseases for Turkey are Fowl pox, Fowl cholera, Fowl typhoid, Mycoplasmosis, Blue comb and round worm infections.


Note:
Turkeys can be dewormed every 5 or 6 week depending on the worm load.
LaSota vaccine could be repeated at interval of one months (4 weeks)
Drugs; antibiotics, anticoccidiosis and antiviral could be alternated within the weeks to prevent and treat infections.

Vaccine's are recommended or required for Turkey. The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Turkey: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, anthrax, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.
